Thank you for sharing your story! Your story really resonated as my background is so similar to yours, (majored in marketing/advertising for undergrad, worked for media/advertising agencies, and after 3 painstaking years was finally able to break into a role in the tech industry by becoming a sales account executive/account manager. Plus... I'm also Taiwanese!) I've been feeling so discouraged as I have 0 technical skills whatsoever, but I'm great at understanding what customers need and know how to talk to them. Thank you for sharing your advice and tips. This has convinced me to continue trying to give it a shot! You're awesome💪🏼
So excited to see our student had such a great success in your new career, congrats, Tina! Thank you for your tips shared in side of the PM Acceelerator alumni community

amazing video and content. thank you for your inspiration and sharing all of your knowledge and experience! The high frequency of the very small space between micro-edits in this video was a bit intense/distracting for me. It's a popular editing style and it works well, but when there's like 10 edits in one sentence, and sometimes several very short edits between several connected words, it can be a little overwhelming. Anyhow, love the content! Looking forward to more
Hi Sophia! No you don’t need to know how to code to be a PM in tech. However, having the technical knowledge will help you communicate with engineers better. :)
Hi Tina, Great video! I am customer service manager for over 5 years and and I am trying to get in product management I have tried to get jobs im account management no luck! I wanted to know should I just go to the boothcamp
Thank you for watching the video so glad that you found it helpful. To be honest, boot camp is quite expensive. If you know PM is what you want to do in your career for sure and u have the budget, then yes boot camp will be helpful for sure. Otherwise, i think working on mini project and understand what PM really is and then use those mini projects to gain real-life experience will be even more helpful in landing u a role. A lot of times, what PM boot camp does is teach you PM fundamentals, but in interviews, you need to have some transferrable experience to talk about it and showcase yourself! :) 😃
Hi Claudia, I used the side project for my past role and turned them into a portfolio! I also included how I developed my e-commerce store and drive sales by AB testing landing page! And yes, will definitely make one!
I want to ask please did you have to build a project , or a portfolio before you entered the job market . Please I am in a dilemma I have the skills but I am asked to build a product or so

In a way, it's not that far of a leap from advertising/marketing to product manager. both involve understanding the user's pain points and what they want. listening to your story it sounds like you had lots of career experience leading up to PM and it was a natural career progression. even starting out in customer service, all of your prior roles were definitely stepping stones. good for you taking initiative.. but the title is not really accurate.
I agree having the customer empathy is a very important aspect of PM career. However, a lot of times, during my job hunting experience, recruiters directly asked me “were u a PM before?” And when I said I had those experience listed above, they said that means u don’t have the PM experience. I’m grateful that my current company took a chance on me! 😭 I hope ppl who were in my shoes can be inspired and take the leap as well

Thank you Tina! I have been on a journey to land a full time tech job since last year and have been fortunate to land a part time Jon dealing with PCs at a local community College. I recently got Pinterest Intern notification to apply and wide up missing the deadline. Nevertheless none of the apprenticeship were customer success but read through all they had and found the confidence to look closer into Product Manager. Realized my experience in over 15yrs in customer service (remote and call center) in product knowledge, being a coordinator for a non profit start up and then 9 months part PC tech makes me more than qualified to apply into a product manager role with no degree or exact experience in the role. But my skills from experience says otherwise. I hope you can respond with so motivation that thi is true and I can do this ?? Thank you Tina! @Tina Lousie Chen
