so relatable... a new grad looking to pivot in an entry-level PM role with no full-time work experience is insanely difficult in 2024 :) but I am trying to be more flexible by considering to be a data / business analyst first
thank you for posting this bc I just got into med school after pivoting into tech and I like product so much but I also love medicine so I’m in a career crisis and this helped clear some of it up for me. THANK YOU!
Do both there are several flexible product management courses I’m doing both I want to be a Occupational therapist and PM too
If you can learn to manage well you will have as much work as you want to do during your entire working life as a project, product, or any other kind of manager. Methodologies change and get new names but the value stays the same. Stay curious 🤙🏽
Thanks for talking through this!
My perspective is that the gradient of skills that are necessary to build a good product was previously boxed into 3 simplified boxes of Product, Engineering, and Design. Even if one of those "titles" disappear, the responsibilities would still be necessary to build a product. (just because you erase the box line doesn't mean the skills are no longer necessary)
Find the core responsibilities/skills that you are good at and enjoy doing and find whatever title aligns with those skills.
Cheers
Could not agree more!
Thank you for this. I agree with you. I am new to the field and you have given me hope.
Such great insights, I’ve been a developer for nearly 10 years and I can tell you a good product manager is worth their weight in gold… a bad one can leave you in a world of pain 😂
From a developer point of view, what makes a good and bad product manager?
Does becoming a product manager as a fresher require some development skills like frontend or full stack, or a fresher can also become one? I have completed my education in Bachelors of Engineering in Information Technology and know a little coding but don't like it. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me.
Thanks for this, Anika! This was super useful
Very insightful and revealing.
Thanks for your good works.
Congratulations on this brilliant video 🙌 It not only covers what it is to be a PM, but also how to become one through acquiring hands-on experience😀 And then to round things up, you give your opinion of how the product manager job market is developing and how to approach it if you want to become an experienced PM -> impressive stuff🤩
Have you ever considered lecturing? I'm using your video to train technical students about what PM's actually do and getting them to assess it as a career, so this video has been very helpful...
Great video! I am actually getting into a Product Management carry this year so this is super helpful, thank you so much ! ❤
I'm so glad to hear! Good luck!
Hi, I’m a graduate of Business Administration, NON TECH background, thinking to join a bootcamp for Project Management. But did you say it’s hard to get hired if someone has a non-tech background?
For someone who has a Bachelor's degree in CS (that isn't internationally recognized) and wants to study a Master’s degree abroad, which is a good master's degree and way to become a Product Manager
MBA
Anika, first of all thank you so much for your channel. I’ve been eating nonstop this content over the last weeks.
I’m currently a salesperson for a famous culinary school. I’m in charge of selling but also analysing the data regarding the sales, clients and campaigns. However, my manager is responsible for launching a new product for international clients, like a touristic package, and I’m his advisor. That way, I started working directly into Product, but it has nothing to do with tech and we don’t really have an agile culture in the company, which is a very hierarchical one. Do you think I could invest in a transition within the company to product? Is it possible to be a P.O. in a traditional company?
Thank you for posting. I'm new here and hope to gain more knowledge from your vast experience.
Welcome and thanks for following! I hope
You continue to get value from my videos :)
amazing video as usual
This video could have been 10-15 minutes :)
Thank you very good and interesting
12 years of experience with a masters degree, half of my experience is in cybersecurity
cant get a PM job at literally any company, even when I try to drop down from director into Sr PM
dozens of interviews, 6 final rounds, no or ambiguous feedback and they dont actually end up hiring someone for the role... no one is actually hiring, they promote some poor Sr Pm with 4 years of experience into a director and tell them they have 3 products instead of one now, pat them on the back and tell them good luck
thats the only real explanation i can think of as to why i have NEVER been to a final round interview and didnt get an offer.... and now i have have 6 in the last 4 months and not a single offer
While I haven’t actively looked or applied anywhere myself in a long time, I am hearing this everywhere. It is certainly an extremely tough time right now so if you can built alternative skill sets while you keep looking, hopefully it may help in the long term.
Exactly why I wanted to make this video because the reliance we have on companies and employers is too great - and in 2024, we are really seeing that power play for those who don’t have an alternative income stream or skill set.
Wishing you all the best
I am a 33-year-old teacher. Is it worth it to become a product manager? I'm a bit worried. If not, what would you advise?
Thanks for the video! I'm currently a structural engineer (very different..) and am curious about applying my skills elsewhere in tech. Like you mentioned, I have to do numerous tasks that involve juggling local jurisdictions, clients, architects, carbon quantities, etc. before our "product" can be stamped and approved. This seems like a fascinating field that would allow me to push products that are more concrete in day to day lives (no pun intended). Alas, after dedicating many years of rigorous schooling to my field, I'm nervous about jumping ship to something more lucrative. Do you think it would be a good fit?
Hey Rani, can I have a meeting with you please? Thanks
You can book a time with me on my Superpeer - it’s linked in the description of all my vid :)
Hello,
My name is Oluwatimileyin, I'm a computer science student who has a passion for Tech and Business Administration and I would like to pursue something related to the intersection of Tech and Business. I'm looking at trying out with Product management and I see that you are a pro in this field. What advice do you have for me ?
I'm looking forward to your reply.
finish your cs degree. Non-technical PMs are not valued as highly and you will struggle to get hired. Also good to have those skills to fall back on in a market downturn when plenty of senior PMs are being let go.
@@nunya_123 thank you
Can you recommend a good certification course for product management please?
Best course is practical experience...
1. Pick a problem
2. Research it
3. Design a solution
4. Validate it with people
5. Use Figma / AI to design it
6. Use AI/ No-code tools to build an MVP
7. Try to sell it
There is your Product Management certification :)
@@iamanikarani amazing answer, thank you so much! really like the video.

Have you done this exercise by yourself? or probably you can share your experience in one of the videos to give walkthrough on how its done to help aspiring PMs. Once again really appreciate the cool videos that you are making to share your knowledge on Product Management. Thank You!
I have done this twice before with my own startups - I have an upcoming video on this :)
