I wrestle with the world of salary negotiations. I once interviewed at Unity and their salary was posted on the JD which was like $125k and I'm thinking "ha! I can negotiate this to $175k or more" but the recruiter told me there was no space for salary negotiation and the reason was because they wanted to focus discussions around candidate experience and qualifications and create parity on the team so people are not paid unequally because one person was really good at negotiating during their interview but someone else on the team wasn't. Everyone gets paid fairly for doing their job. He also said that people of color, women, or other groups like veterans, queer people, people where English is a second language, or even older candidates don't feel like they have leverage and are more timid to negotiate. So they post their salary transparently, saves everyone time, and doesn't create friction in the futre. And I really appreciated and respected that. Also- didn't get the job and stayed at Salesforce where I had to keep negotiating lol.
As a woman in IT, I agree some negotiations help with the pay. However, it would depend on each individual worth. Not all programmers skill are the same. Negotiations basically tell the company that your skill worth more money. But no one would pay for overpriced employee. In my experience, once I pay over $120k, my money happiness doesn’t move that much. The higher you pay, the more you are in target when economy is bad. But if you are so skilled that company justified in keeping, you would stay longer in high pay category
That's crazy you felt confident enough to negotiate to $175k!! I had such a hard time negotiating for $2k more for my salary and they ended up not even meeting me there 😭
@@SPDcru aww I'm sorry! And I think that is the exact reason why I respected Unity for being super transparent about their salaries. So someone like you who is competent at their job gets paid the same as someone else who is equally competent but maybe that person knew the right thing to say to get a higher salary or used a buzzword or made a special bond with the recruiting manager- whatever it is. That is not fair and has no merit on someone's performance. Unless you were interviewing to be a hostage negotiator 😄
lol you never negotiate up to 50k. I understand 15-20k but 50 on base is close to delusional. Maybe it could happen between 2015 and 2021 but not anymore.
I’m 36 and just starting to build my career because I spent my 20s taking care of my parents who got cancer back to back and both passed away from it. I’m finally just starting to build my life and I feel so behind. I’m so tired of being underpaid and taken advantage of while everyone at my company tells me how valuable I am and that if I just “stick it out” I’ll end up in an executive role. No thanks. I’ve always loved tech and I’ve considered going back to school for it, but I’m not going to lie, all the layoffs and being in my 30s already scares me. I feel so far from earning my true potential and salaries like you discuss seem unfathomable. I hope I get there soon, but until then, I’ll keep watching and taking notes!
So one thing you gotta keep in mind with this is these are all mostly Bay Area salaries. Well there’s some of them in Seattle and NYC but that’s about it. The funny thing is while it’s a comfortable salary, you ain’t buying a home in these places unless you crack $400k or so. Typically requires both husband and wife to be making money. Like the home prices are in millions for a regular home. The mortgage rates alone would be $10-15k a month. So most people just leave the area after a while or hope they grow within the company. As for you, It’s not impossible really. What matters most is the company. Tech industry positions including non engineering roles get decent comp along with company stock. That’s the major difference. So if you want to make it into this field. I’d suggest to start finding roles in the Bay Area.
I just wanted to say I’m so sorry for your losses and I can relate somewhat. I was caregiving for my mom almost all my 20s and she passed at the end of 2022. I was 31… I’m grateful I’m living with my dad and he’s been teaching me things, and I’m also feeling like I’m starting from scratch with a career and life for sure. Good luck with figuring out your next steps in life! Maybe watch Mel Robbins? I’ve been watching her podcasts on here for clarity on direction. But if you know you want to get into tech, maybe play around with it! I understand with hearing about all the layoffs…
So sorry for your loss ❤. You are EXTREMELY strong and powerful just know that. One thing I can tell you is that you HAVE to do something you somewhat enjoy. Doing a career purely for the $ or because it’s prestigious will lead to burnout and you will not be the best in it. It constantly leads you to question your worth and abilities. Meanwhile there might be something that actually interests you but you’re just not doing yet. This might be something you crush because you like it and because of that you can do really well. In fact, you will probably do better than other people in this area. And this leads to way less questioning in your abilities. You totally got this. ❤🎉 not going to just say best of luck because we all believe in your abilities! KEEP GOING. You matter ! ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss Emily. I know where you're at but don't be discouraged. Be targeted in what you do to build your career. Get your certifications, this will help you catch up and open up more opportunities. Then stay no more than 2 years in one company. Move around until you feel you're being compensated enough to live the lifestyle you need. I've doubled my salary in just over 3 years doing this. I'm 37yrs now, I played small and was intimidated by management positions so I broke through once I let go of the fear and realized fear doesn't pay the bills. You got this...stay strong girl.❤
So inspired by your journey Chloe, and 7:40 really resonated - financial security is so important to give us the mental space to flourish and learn into hobbies / our creative sides, rather than be on flight or fight all the time worrying about making ends meet
I was just watching your older Shorts and it’s amazing the type of content you make is so high quality, relatable and genuine. I’m so glad I found your channel, although I’m not from tech background nor have PM background. Just can’t wait to watch more of your videos and be inspired for my own content creation journey! ❤
yeah that was honestly some crazy numbers. i've never seen anything like it, but it really goes to show that you should always negotiate. it could really make a huge difference!!
@@chloeshih Could you create a video detailing the strategies and negotiation tips you used to increase your friend’s salary from $150,000 to $250,000? That would be really helpful.
Non-salary related but I've been watching you for a long time as a product newbie and can definitely notice the level-up in editing and storytelling with this latest video. Congrats on 100K and your new content creation journey, Rooting for you!
Chlo so proud of you!! My friends and I started talking more openly about salaries 3 years ago when I got my first big girl tech job at Coinbase and since then, each of us has moved up in salary exponentially. I love your transparency and work ethic. Can you do an updated salary negotiations video? :)
HELL YEAH!! I loveeee hearing stuff like this. Love how yall have been making more and more each year. I’ll have to figure out how to structure an updated negotiations video. I remember the first one took me like 17 hours to script it haha.
Wooooo congrats Chloe on 100k subs 🎉 but just a side note on salary negotiations, being a recruiter myself, sometimes conversations like this get tricky! I had a candidate that we had offered her the role at the desired base salary she asked for on top of having bonuses and she negotiated for a 15% increase after. spoke to management, fought like crazy just to have the increment approved, dropped her a phone call personally after that and she STILL wanted to negotiate for a 25% increment! i had to say no to that because internally, we had to make sure we paid her fairly to the job level that is equitable to the rest of the team. plus the constant pushing of increment felt like to me, she wasn’t interested in actually working for the company or the job lol. i’ve also had candidates that sold themselves really well and asked for a high salary only to fail delivering what they needed to do on the job because they sold themselves way too high during the interview 😅 I think the value of salary negotiation is making sure you aren’t low-balled, getting lower than market rates and paid what you deserve from the role. but please don’t push it too far! these conversations count as a first impression even before you step into the company so always remember the higher you’re paid, the higher the expectation there is for you so make sure you walk the talk! :-)
Definitely agree on that failing to deliver part. You can ask for a ridiculously high number after the initial offer, but if you don't work up to it, you will be first to get canned. Especially in today's job market where cost cutting is still on the top of mind for leadership and board. 150k -> 250k in her video for her friend is nuts.
Chloe, what a reality check video! PMs in London are just dreaming about these figures! Crazy! But also very motivational to keep on pushing and being vocal about the value you can bring to the team as well as confidence in our skills! Great Video! Thank you and Congrats on all the milestones! You are killing it! ❤😻
Happy 100k Chloee!! This sponsor is ICONIC and I love the style of this video. The angles are ANGLINGGGG. 🥰🥰 Your video about pay negotiation got me to where I am today with my current job (first big girl job!) so thank you. You've changed my life, literally!
What an amazing video, Chloe! I loved the format of this video too… seeing you do “daily life stuff” like grocery shopping, casually hanging out in front of a Daiso but speaking about a touchy subject such as salary/money makes me feel like you’re my big sis talking to me 😊
haha oh boy that was not as casual as it felt IRL. got a lot of stares, but wanted to make this a cooler video than sitting in front of the camera in my living room. glad this was helpful from your internet big sis ~~ 💕
Discovered you today. I don't think these salary videos are "ick", cheap, or hate-watching; certainly not for me! I'm serving military and looking to prep myself for transitioning to civilian employment... I have NO IDEA how to value my skills in the private sector. Videos like this really help me to calibrate my own expectations. Thanks so much :)
Chloe, Congrats! I’m literally crying rn! You are such a motivator! I’m so relatable to everything you have mentioned. Working late hours under 120k in SF as a PM. It’s time to change something!
I love this! Taking that time to celebrate wins and growth, so happy to witness this journey and as always thanks for sharing and being vulnerable with your audience 🫶🏻💕
as a gal in software, THANK YOU for posting this video & sharing your story 🖤 especially the very last part about pushing your friend to negotiate out of her comfort zone and nailing it. this is so empowering to hear and comes at such a great time :)
I really admire you as a PM and content creator. I'm in the project management path, trying to start my content creation career myself and you're such an inspiration to me. It's impressive how you manage to entertain, educate and be innovative in every video. For this one, did you have to make multiple takes for each clip? do you have any tips on how to speak more naturally in camera while filming in public? Thank you!!
AW OMG 16K?! you were here so early!! i gotta think on how to share the negotiations video, but for now, i really think the first negotiations video i did back then was great! hope that's helpful for now!!
Very interesting and eye opening all around. I’m a registered nurse. And it’s like the exact opposite with salary in healthcare for people like me. There’s basically no negotiating, the rate is what it is. Lucky if you get $1 raise a year. Crazy.
Hi chloe, I was wondering, can you share a realistic life cost/income view? I mean, you can earn a huge amount, but if costs are insanely high as well. Is it than still worth it?
hi ru! are you looking for a general cost:income breakdown? i did do a video on "what i spend in a week" a few videos back. perhaps that might be interesting to check out? and my take on the high costs + high income is that it's not worth it. i had to move out of SF because i felt i kept trying to chase money and cost of living just kept getting more and more expensive. LA isn't exactly the cheapest place either, but there are far more options for different income brackets here.
I’ve only been following you since around 80k (about a year) but It’s been so cool watching all of the changes you’ve gone through!! And I’m about to be 30 so I feel like I’m learning something 6 months behind. 😅✨
The effort and creativity you put into your videos, especially recently since going full time, have been amazing! It does not go unnoticed. Congrats on 200k now!!
I keep having to remind myself that this is California salaries because my eyes were legit popping out of head hearing those numbers! Texas could never! But also, I've never negotiated a salary before. I just got my first salary position as a Cloud Analyst. I really want to learn how to negotiate salary for my next job.
Okay, now you are just showing off your amazing editing skills. From the TV, inside and outside the car while in motion and the good food. Now I'm hungry. Thanks LOL! Congratulations!
Congrats Chloe 🎉and thank you so much for this ! You way of sharing information is very impressive - it’s like talking to ur friend while doing chores☺️
ahh thank you chloe, i loved the introspection at the start where u shared about how money unlocked so many of your dreams :"""" its giving me hope now
this is amazing and love the transparency !! been watching your videos since 60k! as i’m reaching the end of my third year of college i love looking through the perspective of my peers around me and seeing what i could do differently from there experience. I’m really scared of what is going to become my future soon going into the real world but im also so excited too! I’m already on my 2nd IT internship with a 3d printing company and coming from a low income background prior it’s amazing to see how much i am making as a college student. still slightly below living wage in massachusetts but it’s insane. I want to get better at negotiating when the time comes. as a second gen filipino american and first generation to go to college it’s daunting to what’s to come in the next 5 years and it’s super scary. I would love to connect if possible maybe sometime in the future as i have projects soon to come to promote south east asians in tech as it’s been an huge goal for myself to create. I know you dont identify with that background but your knowledge within the tech space as a woman in tech is something i would love to pick at your brain for input as well! Anywho thank you for such an insightful video and for you being you!
Congrats! I'm in the Pharmaceutical industry but I like seeing how people in other industries negotiate in their respective fields. I usually negotiate with external companies as well as my current company and see what is the best compensation package and work life style they have to offer. I do that on a yearly basis just for in case of any layoffs or maybe the raise just wasn't good enough. But looks like we all are alike in that negotiation is the best practice one can do for moving up in career.
aww thank you!! hope you enjoy the videos! i'm taking a lil break from vlogs, but i do have a podcast called the Joy of Missing Out. might be worth checking out if you like more stuff like this!
Congratulations Chloe! You are a very driven individual. You think not only about yourself but your family.🧡Just recently discovered you on RUclips and love your energy.♥️
Thank you for sharing Chloe! If you could create a new episode focusing on the salary negotiations (How you helped your friend without multiple offers), that would be fantastic! Cheers!
thanks for sharing these vids!! they're so helpful. it reminds me of my experience with working with Nadia de Ala. She's a negotiation coach for women of color in tech. working with her helped me learn so many valuable skills. i think you'd really kill it in offering services like that! especially since you already have a large audience for it too
Just started following you like last week but it feels like i know you already, congratulations on how far you’ve come ! First 100k is the hardest, 1mln by eoy les gooo!
Such an inspiring journey… you actually inspired me to start my youtube as well (also working in tech, here). Cant wait to see where you’ll be in another 4 years, so happy for all of your success so far! This is only the beginning:)
GIRL what an inspiration! thank you for sharing your journey & numbers, that takes a lot of courage. also that negotiation is crazyyyy. congrats on 200k subs & more and enjoy taiwan!
Hi Chloe! Can you also make a video on how to get mentors and what the relationship you have with yours look like?? I have no idea how to start, but I'm getting to a point in my career where I could really use guidance.
Really helpful video. I wish you had down a sit down version. It's a little hard to hear you at points or not be distracted by so much going on in the background. But regardless, thanks so much for your transparency!
Hey! I don’t know if you will see this but I am a 26 year old who is graduating with my bachelors in the fall and my masters in December. I am super nervous about this exact topic. Love the video.
I appreciate the great content here and the change of pace!! I've been debating making the move from product operations to product manager/owner and your take provides helpful insight 😊
Thanks for sharing. I’m shocked for Senior PM comp was so low. The leveling must be off compared to other tech companies. Senior PM should be minimum 500k TC
i think it's mostly an equity thing! so tiktok was actually really high on cash with their annual bonus. that bumped me a lot. i can't really share the discord equity information. it's also honestly fluctuating, but the initial offer was sizeable. I'd say senior PM is actually between 400k-500k TC at the top of market.
omg yayyy congrats on 200k Chloe!! been watching you for sooo long (around the time you were in Taiwan:D) and your channel really helped + encouraged me into my own journey in tech :) (not a PM, but a CI researcher). ur a legend!!
It's nice to see you can do this in States. I think a lot of European countries operate a little bit differently - in Germany there are laws regarding salaries based off the union system.
I came across your channel from your short showing ur dad ur tattoo. I dont work anywhere near the industry your from (i work bagging rolls) but ibe subscribed as i love your vibe and your really making me consider going back to college to finally pursue a career in nails
OOOOO!!! hope you've enjoyed the evolution of this channel ~ sometimes i look at my old videos and i cringe at all that i do 😅i used to use an omega fish eye lens and my face was sooo blown out. oh boy. the filming has come very far!!

hi ru! are you looking for a general cost:income breakdown? i did do a video on "what i spend in a week" a few videos back. perhaps that might be interesting to check out?
and my take on the high costs + high income is that it's not worth it. i had to move out of SF because i felt i kept trying to chase money and cost of living just kept getting more and more expensive.
I AM CRYING so happy for you!
THANKS JESLYN!!!!! APPRECIATE UUUU
We need a new negotiation video ! This would be amazing
Congrats Chloe! You deserve it! Thanks for inspiring us! 🎉❤
I keep having to remind myself that this is California salaries because my eyes were legit popping out of head hearing those numbers! Texas could never! But also, I've never negotiated a salary before. I just got my first salary position as a Cloud Analyst. I really want to learn how to negotiate salary for my next job.
Would love to hear how you budget, save, invest and manage your finances❤
oh my previous video is on what i spend in a week!! i also made a budgeting sheet that's free!!
Congratulations on your milestone, Chloe! I keep watching your videos because you are soooo relatable!!!
Okay, now you are just showing off your amazing editing skills. From the TV, inside and outside the car while in motion and the good food. Now I'm hungry. Thanks LOL! Congratulations!
😂 that intro took quite some time to put together, but i loved it!! also the car filming was TERRIFYING! oh my god idk if i can do it again.
Congratulations Chloe on reaching 100k subscribers on RUclips! Your hard work and dedication have truly paid off. One of the channels i always watch 🎉
thank you!! :D :D what a crazy milestone!!!
Congrats Chloe 🎉and thank you so much for this ! You way of sharing information is very impressive - it’s like talking to ur friend while doing chores☺️
ahh thank you chloe, i loved the introspection at the start where u shared about how money unlocked so many of your dreams :"""" its giving me hope now
Your editing game is too notch!! Whew! Makes your videos so satisfying to watch Chloe 🤗
Just enough time to watch this before I head out for the day! I find your videos very calming and I can't explain why. Thank you for posting!
aww thank youu!! so glad you enjoy the videos!! im keeping calm and carrying on haha ~
this is amazing and love the transparency !! been watching your videos since 60k! as i’m reaching the end of my third year of college i love looking through the perspective of my peers around me and seeing what i could do differently from there experience.
Wow, you've got the fairy tale life. Congrats, hoping you continued, future success and happiness!
You didn't mention about location. Other PM might get lower offers if they don't live in big cities like SF or NY ( I'm not a PM)
Exactly. that experience of getting a multi-six figure salary to just feel “comfortable” is uniquely exclusive to where she built her career (SF)
I absolutely love your outfit and your makeup, it's always on point! ❤
SO FRICKIN PROUD OF YOU CHLOE THO WHO AM I TO SAY THAT 🥲 BUT TO THE MOOOON WE GOOOO
OH MY THANK UUUUU AND NO I MEAN YOUR COMMENT MEANS A LOT TO ME!! TO THE MOON WE GOOOOOO 🚀
Congratulations Chloe! Love watching this journey you're on.
Wow just discovered you and love your energy and self worth. Totally inspiring, thank you for sharing!
aww thank you!! hope you enjoy the videos! i'm taking a lil break from vlogs, but i do have a podcast called the Joy of Missing Out. might be worth checking out if you like more stuff like this!
Congrats! Love the informal vibe.
Yes, Bytedance's efficiency is very respectable
Congrats Chloe! Can't believe that it has been that many years since I first found your channel on Twitch! So excited for you!
omg CJ! it's been a minute!!! i know! i've been meaning to go back to twitch, but it's been lowkey real hard to manage the new schedule x_x
@@chloeshih Totally understandable! Just focus on what's most important now! :) Even I have been away from Twitch myself too with my new life phase :D
Cheers!
I do have an older video on negotiating my salary! I still reference a ton of those insights. Might be good to start with that!
Ok this is so my sign to get into Product Management
Congratulations on not 1 but 200k Chloe !!!!! ❤🎉
thanks for sharing these vids!! they're so helpful. it reminds me of my experience with working with Nadia de Ala. She's a negotiation coach for women of color in tech. working with her helped me learn so many valuable skills. i think you'd really kill it in offering services like that! especially since you already have a large audience for it too
You deserve everything good Chloe!
Just started following you like last week but it feels like i know you already, congratulations on how far you’ve come ! First 100k is the hardest, 1mln by eoy les gooo!
When you said "I did loose friendships with money" I can relate so bad! Love your videos
It’s true :/ definitely a harsh reality of adulthood. 😔
You worked so hard and deserve your success
So proud of you, Chloe! You are my inspiration
Hi Chloe! Can you also make a video on how to get mentors and what the relationship you have with yours look like?? I have no idea how to start, but I'm getting to a point in my career where I could really use guidance.
Pay starts at 6:09
Congratulations on 234k now Chloe😊🥳.
I’m a new subscriber
Really helpful video. I wish you had down a sit down version. It's a little hard to hear you at points or not be distracted by so much going on in the background. But regardless, thanks so much for your transparency!
This is really good. Your reveal will help other product managers in negotiation.
Lol pop off with the editing sissss 👏
💕💕💕 hehe thank uuuuu
Hey! I don’t know if you will see this but I am a 26 year old who is graduating with my bachelors in the fall and my masters in December. I am super nervous about this exact topic. Love the video.
Congratulations Chloe!!!🔥🎉🎉
I love you and your journey Chloe!
congrats on 100k (now 200k+!)
thank you!!! wooo 200k!! i'm super proud and grateful 🥹🥹 hope i continue to make baller videos that you like!!
Congratulations Chloe!! More power to you 🎉
Need to get my eyes on that negotiation video, share a link please?
I appreciate the great content here and the change of pace!! I've been debating making the move from product operations to product manager/owner and your take provides helpful insight 😊
The production of this video is just ❤🔥
💕💕💕 thank you ~~ idk if i wanna film in the public again 😅 it was lowkey uncomfortable haha but i'm glad i tried it!!
Congrats on 100k Chloe ❤❤
Bigggg holy shit! Congratulations Chloe!
this was so helpful to see!! always love your advice :’) going to rewatch your negotiations vid before I apply to jobs!
I'd say senior PM is actually between 400k-500k TC at the top of market.
omg yayyy congrats on 200k Chloe!! been watching you for sooo long (around the time you were in Taiwan:D) and your channel really helped + encouraged me into my own journey in tech :) (not a PM, but a CI researcher). ur a legend!!
hillsidesssss!! :D :D yes i know you've been around! i always see your comments 💕💕💕 thank you for sticking around!
hope you're doing well these days
Thank you for making such home-y content! Literally so comforting n_n
Chloeeee!! Your editing and content skills are 🔥 really enjoying your content off late ❤
thank youuuuu!! :D :D these youtube videos take me so long to work on x_x so your comment makes me so happy
Woah The TC actually blew my mind 🤯
This was super helpful, thanks Chloe!
I love you videos, SUPER useful!
It's nice to see you can do this in States. I think a lot of European countries operate a little bit differently - in Germany there are laws regarding salaries based off the union system.
Unions in the modern day is a scam. They were required when companies would scam the people but now the government is doing that.
Great video. I really like how dynamic it is. What is that microphone you are using? Thank you
Congrats Chloe!! What tools did or would you use to get started? Like iPhone good enough or get a cam, what video editing tool? Thanks
This is so inspiring! Chloe, you have given me hope.
I came across your channel from your short showing ur dad ur tattoo. I dont work anywhere near the industry your from (i work bagging rolls) but ibe subscribed as i love your vibe and your really making me consider going back to college to finally pursue a career in nails
Amazing video and great sharing. You are truly an inspiration
Yessss congratulations chloeee 🤗🥳🙌🏽 glad to be part of that 200k 🫶🏽
welcome welcome!! 💕💕💕💕
Hey Chloe 😘 loved this video as always!!! Please Can you make how to negotiate your salary as a product manager?
Hi anushka!! i already have a video already! just search up "negotiations chloe shih" and you should find it!
Here since day 1! 😊 congratulations Chloe🎊💐👏
OOOOO!!! hope you've enjoyed the evolution of this channel ~ sometimes i look at my old videos and i cringe at all that i do 😅i used to use an omega fish eye lens and my face was sooo blown out. oh boy. the filming has come very far!!
Hi Chloe, just saw the news about the earthquake in Taiwan and I know you're there on a business trip, hope you're okay? Praying for those affected🙏🏽
I’m okay!! It was super wild tho. The MRT subway shut down and a few buildings fell :( but my family and I are safe!
Happy you and your family are okay, stay safe! @@chloeshih
Congrats!! I'm still laid off my job since November, and hoping to find something soon in my Motion Graphics field. Great vid!
Update?
Thank you!
Hi Chloe! Please make a new negotiation video with as many details as possible! Thanks a ton!
I keep replaying the "low income in san francisco", took me by surprise and had me wondering how that was filmed, haha
