  • Senior Labour figures have acknowledged that the party’s stance on Gaza cost it seats in Thursday’s election, with four MPs unexpectedly losing to pro-Palestinian independents.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting admitted the party had been affected by its position on the Middle East crisis, narrowly retaining his Ilford North seat by just 528 votes. Streeting noted that Gaza had been a significant issue for Labour across the country.
John McTernan, a former adviser to Tony Blair, cautioned the party against ignoring the message sent by parts of its core vote.

It's not a Muslim thing. Gaza exposed the cruelty and viciousness of the ruling classes. It shattered the belief that our leaders sincerely care about human rights .

The fact that both main parties totally ignored the Gaza issue for which thousands of people have used their precious weekends to show solidarity with the Palestinian people in their hours of need, tell the British people something is fundamentally wrong with our ruling class. Neither Tories or Labour can get away with that.

I think it's understandable to give the benefit of the doubt if it had been just that one doubling down on the notion of Israel's absolute right to do anything in retaliation. I don't hold Frei in any high regard so I'm not surprised at his reaction.
I do think it is important to factor in other occasions. He also had the same reaction during an interview on channel 5 that took place 8 months ago. Asked twice again and explicitly with regards to deprivation of food, water, and electricity. Keir's response again being to tout Israel's absolute right. So that's a notch against him just dazed in his reaction.
That is not Keir's biggest sin in regards to his actions surrounding the situation in Gaza. The biggest sin for me is his abuse of power to have the "speaker of the commons", Lindsay Hoyle, to force a motion from Labour on ceasefire through, despite it being the day for the SNP to do so.
I'm all for casting aside traditions and rules when they're archaic and useless, but to hold the veneer of decency and to abuse power in that manner, it shows that Starmer just wants power. He doesn't hold any convictions for his position on the matter but just goes where he feels the money outweighs public perception.
Labour didn't win this election, the Tories lost it. Labour secured less votes than they did under Corbyn. There was a depressed overall turnout because Starmer wasn't giving people something to vote for, he was just the historically acceptable candidate to vote for so the Tories don't get into power again

The fact is that he's a very effective campaigner for by-elections, and making himself an immediate protest vote. But when it comes time for a general election and the turnout increases, he's typically left wanting. As this is the fifth straight general election he's lost at since 2010.

However all 3 of Bradfords Labour MP's went against the Party 3 line whip to vote for the SNP motion for a Ceasefire, that's cutting off your nose to spite your face and risking a Reform Plc candidate being elected.

Starver needs to decide. He’s pledged allegiance to Isrel and there’s are also many others, especially, the front bench.
While we hear Starver condemning what’s happening in Ukraine, he has to show the same pain and condemnation. Starver can’t do too much re standing up for Gaza because he pledged allegiance to nutyoo. Starver and Sunak intervening and interfering in ICC law to help nutyoo.

It just shows how important the decades old Palestinian situation is and has always been especially to those on the left. The Palestinians have been subjugated, dispossessed, tortured, and killed by the IDF long before Oct 7. Notwithstanding the attack by Hamas on that day, it doesn't surprise me that many votes were lost because of Keir Starmer's initial stance on Gaza which one would normally associate with the Tories. I suspect that Starmer began to change his position once he got wind of where Biden was going on this. I can't help but feel that when it comes down to it Starmer lacks a kind of moral courage, unable to speak what he really thinks but is guided by the US policy, which makes me fear he may be easily bought.
