- James O'Brien discusses the assassination attempt on Donald Trump and praises his reaction to the incident.
Saturday evening saw a shooter take aim at the former president during a rally in Pennsylvania, with Trump shot in the ear by a sniper before being rushed off stage by close security.
He's now said he's "lucky to be alive" in his first interview since he was shot at.
James argues that the former president's response was 'very impressive' and 'objectively remarkable'.
However, he stresses that this still hasn't taken away his 'disgust for what he has done to democracy.'

He could not have made it clearer he still despises all that Trump believes and stands for. He said that several times. This is what he was talking about. Objectively if it were a more sane former president who had done the exact same thing, we would all (including me) be satisfied with his reaction. However there is the dichotomy because it's Trump, a man who has exclusively stood for hate and bigotry, so we are rightly skeptical of his response. James said exactly that, nothing else. Everyone knows what Trump has done and stands for, the question James is thinking about is how thay affects our view of the event and the aftermath

I do think that O’Brien is an idiot also, but some entities/ ideas can be intrinsically remarkable.
For example, I think that reproduction is intrinsically remarkable, it is impressive in virtue of itself, that being the action of creating a new life.

Acting is a different skill, and he couldn’t carry it off. Though it was as brief as they could make it. As for the “shot” itself - which actually connected , so we are told, ask any firearms expert. I think he put his security detail at huge risk. They clearly tried to get him off the stage and he pushed back and pushed his way through to fist pump. He did the same getting into his vehicle standing on the door stop rather than staying low.

Back in 2015, trump said he could pretend to be "presidential". He went on to show us that he was anything but that. Nothing he has done over the past few days can erase our memories of the past decade.
If he only focussed on him, the larger picture is irrelevant to him. He was fine. He will continue to be protected. He has an ego the size of a planet. It would be remarkable if he did anything other than what he did. This is a dreadful case study in how to be a person and, arguably, much of the commentary and reaction is like a rabbit caught in the headlights. We are being gaslighted. He is as bad as he was before this. He will continue to be appalling if he gets elected.
