  • Rishi Sunak has officially stepped down as Prime Minister after a catastrophic election that saw the Tories slump to their lowest ever number of MPs.
The ex-PM flew back to London from Yorkshire where he conceded, telling the nation today in his resignation speech: “I am sorry.
“I have given this job my all but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change.
“I have heard your anger. Following this result I will step down as party leader, not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.”
He said Sir Keir Starmer is a "decent, public spirited man, who I respect."
James O'Brien reflects on the 'fall of the Tory Party' and who could be their next leader as they become the Official Opposition.

I imagine the hysterical scaremongering of the last week (supermajority!!, high taxes!!, unaccountability!!, no right-wing!!, Putin's preferred option!!) played a role in convincing some undecided Tory voters to come out and vote. But yes. It makes me exacerbated to think what might have happened if Reform weren't there. I'm sorry. I'm sorry that my town listened to her. The residents of Fareham have let you down.... You, the Great British people, voted for the Tories over the last fourteen years, and they kept their hateful promises. They believe they're entitled to your vote, regardless of what they did, or didn't do. And they need to learn their lesson." But they, and most of all SHE, their leader in waiting, won't learn anything, because the residents of my "True Blue" town, and another 120 like it, saw fit to continue to vote for them. 😢

The thing with Rees-Mogg is he's a kind of Hannibal Lector type, minus the eating people bit. He's perfectly happy to be an awful person in pretty much every way, but somehow manners are something that have to be impeccable. That kind of slipped in later years of his tenure, but if one thing can be said for him, it's that he'd happily mug a dying old woman, but he would be ever so polite while he did it.

However, he had the opportunity to work in the Cabinet under Boris, and could've twice run for leadership with a compelling freedom pitch in 2022, but didn't. Yet Farage single-handedly went from zero to four seats by campaigning and giving the voters what they wanted to hear. Ultimately, Baker's loss is Baker's fault.

How many times did Cruella say "we're delivering what the people want"?
The only time they did that was on Thursday 4th July.

Another self serving speech from Braverman. If she thinks she will ever see herself hold any position of power in future, she is severely deluded

Parliament should have an equal number of representatives from every party. None of them should not have over £500.000 in the bank or money anywhere. Their children must go to state schools. Their bank account spending should be made public. Is this too much to ask.

'Possibly the thickest man in a suit I've ever met, there is nothing going on behind the eyes. It's like trying to get through to a mollusc in a coma'

@@IMBlakeley I always thought that, he is actually vying for the opposite of the mastermind competition called the zero mind, he probably won’t win because some serious contenders for that title.
