Here's how my dad cleaned gas tanks in the 60's.... Remove sending unit with float from tank, put gas cap back on, put a generous amount of gravel and small rocks in the tank, plug sending unit hole as best you can, bungee or wire to cement mixer and let it tumble about 4 hours, remove and empty rocks and rinse. I have done it a few times over the years and it gets tank very clean. A very noisy process while tumbling.

Putting marbles in a tank works very well also. Very cheap for a huge bag at most stores, buy a few very large bags & after ur done just save them for next time. Also less aggressive & the marbles r already very clean so no cleaning mud off gravel plus when they break apart gravel/rocks tend to leave more mud & debris inside so I find marbles r the best thing to use.

I've bead blasted inside a tank. It looked sparkling new for a little while. The problem was, it removes the zinc coating, and the inside of the tank flashed over to rust very quickly! I ended up replacing it anyway.

I cleaned (nuts and bolts) and sealed the tank on my 1953 chevy 3100 pickup. I used a kit from POR-15. It was a bit of work but has worked well for 4 years; no leaks, no clogged fuel lines/filters. But on a vette, new tanks are cheap! Smart to just replace it. In the future you can use carb or brake cleaner if you want to remove fuel lacquer quickly.

I used a length of chain in my motorcycle gas tank. It works as well as gravel or bolts, but you only have to fish out one piece.

Next time use a combination of a small amount of white vinegar abs some chain. Swirl, toss and shake the tank repeatedly. Flush and repeat once, maybe twice and that tank will be just fine 😉

I've done motorcycle tanks with apple cyder vinegar. I always do a rinse with baking soda to neutralize it and a final rinse with distilled water to keep it from flash rusting.

IDK, I find for all the time to remove it, then to clean it, that just installing a new tank, lines and filters makes life easier so that when fixing the engine, insures delivery of fresh clean petro. I tried fixing different components of my cooling system on my E46. Well, when you do one component, the other component goes and so on. I ended up doing my entire cooling system twice. If I had I just put in a new cooling system first, I wouldn’t have had kept getting headaches and the added expense. Shortcuts to save money usually ends up costing the same or more in the long run.

Ben, a few years ago I had endless troubles with foreign made in tank pumps for my two Volvo rear drivers, a 240 and a 740. Both cars got replacement pumps about every year or two, that was how long the pumps would last before failing. At one point a garage I had replace one said they thought they observed a loose "slosh" baffle in the 740's plastic tank. So I picked up a replacement tank at a local foreign salvage. Inside was a lot of solidified varnish. I was able to clean as far in as I could reach by spraying Gumout Carb Cleaner. It did a nice job of dissolving the varnish since Gumout ahs always been pretty strong stuff for cleaning old fuel deposits out of carbs. Just FYI my experience. BTW, the original tank is still being used. When I opened it up to replace another pump, it was clean and solid so I still have the replacement tank as a spare. Don't know what they were looking at!

MURIATIC ACID Everyone wants to fuck around with alternative ways.. don't be scared of it, it fucking works KILLS all rust. you keep it. throw your hardware in there, takes the rust off, no fucking around, the shit is cheap as hell, cheaper than a new tank, you can re use it, and it is readily available at Lowes $8.00 a gallon, and that tank is saved. That simple. Neutralize it with baking soda, spray it out, and throw in some fuel to prevent flash rusting. I use it for EVERYTHING. No tumbling rocks for hours, no bullshit involved, have a clean usable tank in a couple hours. While it's out, throw your rusty tools in there, your screw drivers, ratchet's, screws and bolts, hell throw your old seized vice in there. That's right. Bring it back. MURIATIC ACID HATES RUST. Wear gloves, EYE ROTECTION and make sure you have baking soda near by. I also suggest you do this out side. Forget rocks vinegar and these GIRLY WAYS. THAT TANK WILL LOOK BRAND NEW.

$100 for a tank isn't worth the effort to do anything else. OTOH, if you have something where the new tank might cost a fortune (or you just want OEM) you can get a kit from Eastwood that will clean, neutralize, etch, and coat the inside of a tank with a substance that's tougher than epoxy paint. The stuff is just about bullet proof and there's no known chemical that will remove it once dry. (takes about a week to dry)

I wish I could remember the name of the product I used to "refurb" a motorcycle gas tank. Some sort of liquid Palomar stuff. It was 16 bucks. You don't even have to knock the boogers out of the tank first. You just pour it in and roll it around making sure ever cc of the tank is covered. Pour out the remaining product. Let it sit in the sun for about six hours and Boom, Brand new looking inside of tank. It leaves a super smooth cotton white finish. hard as a rock too.
    Cheers from Louisiana.

For $100 a new tank only makes sense. For my motorcycles with unobtainium tanks vinegar has saved many. I use degreaser to get out the varnish first then flush with water as you did. The vinegar does a great job on the rust.

I'm sure I'll get some flak on this one but I cleaned one up like NEW?, no not new but good enough by using some dilute muriatic acid and monitoring the time emptying and refilling again. Took about an hour to dissolve all that crap then put in the plastic coating.

Not always an option. My 750iL uses an irregularly shaped gas tank. A conventional rectangular tank literally doesn't fit. A replacement one costs between $500 to over $1,000 depending on retailer - not always an option to "just go buy a new one." Putting an existing tank into service if possible is always a better option. Have a little consideration for those of us who can't just dump money into a new tank.

I told my daughter when I'm gone to sell my C7 Z51 don't let it sit and rot I know she doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission.
