Forgotten 1972 Corvette Rescued From Field: Owner Left It For Dead Tried To Buy This Car For 5 Years

- I have been trying to buy this 1972 Corvette since the day that I saw it, FIVE YEARS AGO. As long as I have known about the car it has been sitting in a field with the hood off of it. The day finally came that the owner was willing to sell, so I decided that it would be worth a video documenting the moment I thought would never come!

Persistence pays off.
One of the great mysteries I'll never solve is how people are attached enough to a car to refuse to sell for whatever reason, but not willing to take 2 minutes to move the hood back over the engine. Weird.
That's what's so infuriating about American Pickers. The owners are really nothing but hoarders that are fine with watching the car rot away and won't accept a reasonable offer from someone willing to restore it.
No sh*t ,lol. I thought the same thing.
Hoarding is a devastating mental illness. Dealing with someone letting a million dollars worth of automotive Americana errode into the ground is far more often the rule than the exception. It can creep into an otherwise stable persons life with such ease. But by the grace of a loving God go I....
Life happens and sometimes the car represents better times to the owner. He may not seem to care for it but has a deep connection with it. I have a 67 Firebird that was my first car. It sat neglected for 20 years during some dark times in our lives. Eventually my sons took an interest and we’re enjoying the car once more.
@@junkorbust9498 Fair point. But, I see a difference between motivation to put something on the road again and a simple, single effort to cover the engine. Almost as easy as rolling up the windows.
Whenever I see stuff like this, I always think to myself, “ man this was once someones pride and joy, all for it to be left to rot in a field” :(
The wife and I just piled a 79 that was sitting for 20 years and 109 thousand miles. Igor that thing fired up but the carb was crap put a new one and had just the left front brake and was doing burn outs in the driveway. 😎
Thanks
That’s going to be a great project to watch, can’t wait Thanks for keeping Corvettes on the road and out of the fields....
The poor cow came over to say goodbye. I'd like to know how many loose marbles have to be rattling around in a persons head to let any Corvette sit in a field and rot like this one. Luckily you spotted it and never gave up on trying to buy it. These are beautiful cars and I know you'll do a great job reviving it. I hope you got it for a good price. I hope you'll share future videos as you bring it back to life. I'm a Corvette nut myself and hate to see people let them get to this point.
It's painful to see the neglect this car has suffered.
I used to have a 72 back in the day.
It saddens me when I see vehicles abandoned to the elements like this. I wish you luck with your two Vettes.
Great find. Good to see a younger person rescuing these classics. Best of luck with this project
Well done bringing it home! It looks pretty much original, no rot etc. Would be a great rebuild project for your channel, even with an engine rebuild, it looks like a fighter to driven again!
We have a '72 LT-1 with A/C, one of 240 made. My Dad bought it in 1986. Needless to say, I'd love to see more videos of this 'Vette.
Thank you for rescuing this beauty. Leaving it in the field like that is a travesty. Please keep us updated with your progress.
I’m glad you got your new toy!
Would love to see more of this car!
This one is tuggin at my heart!!!
Bud,,,,, PLEASE do more vids on this project. I have a 72 just like it. EXCELLENT FIND!!! Keep up the good work!
Love to know what he paid for this car.... Made me sad to see just left to rot... good luck bring back to life..
Since you’ve been eyeballing it so long you should make more videos of it.
Found my 81 under a tree at a chicken farm. Been there for a few years to a decade. Working on it now for awhile, but soon.. I'll have it on the road again. Keep doing what you do, hope to see the finished project.
I don’t care which one you do next, just do one. Your “getting them back on the road” videos are so enjoyable to watch.
love this style of the early 70's....love vettes..ty
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Ben.
Well done.
Hi Ben, it's just me n I've been following you a long time now. I like this car I think you should do with it what you did with your 56 caddie. If the motor cannot be rebuilt then buy a crate motor , this is a classic you should save it , if you can.
Texas cars parked in a field do rust, I bought a 77 Chevelle sedan for parts a few years ago out of Mineral Wells, and it had sat in a field for 10 years with the windows down, nothing survived that was inside and the floors were completely gone, but the exterior sheet metal was great!
Yep, I like to call that Texas rust. Unless it’s from the gulf coast then it can have some real nasty structural rust
Hi
I hope you have a lot of free time on your hands to bring the car back to looking brand new again.
It is so disgusting that so many great classic cars get treated that way when there's always somebody that would love to own and restore them.
I would think a rust free chrome bumper car would be a keeper to put back on the road someday
Seeing it move is like it's ready to come back to life. Nice that the dog checked it out to be sure it wasn't going to start any trouble.
Man, you must be really excited to get her home. Good for you. I just hope the rest of the car doesn't fight you the way the breather did. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍
Better you than me! Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Your skills are awesome!
Glad you were able to save another one. Would be nice to tear that engine down and see just how bad it is. It probably can be rebuilt.
I don't know the story on the 70, but it seems to me that this car has been waiting for you for 5 years. I know 1 at a time, and if I were in your shoes (and I kinda am, several projects) this one would get my attention. Either way, we will watch. Pulls at my heartstrings to see these cars like this.
I would need therapy after seeing cars like that
Maybe if we went in together we could get a group rate Steve.
Omg..how could someone forget about that car??
Save it Ben save it.
Here in Virginia its humid even in the winter months
Sure is
My younger brother rescued a '68 in just about the same situation. The convertible hardtop was being used as a chicken coop. Anyway, it took him a few years but he reassembled/rebuilt it and drives it on nice days around Portland. Therefore, not very often.
That one has some real potential, I would like to see either of those featured.
I see a hidden beauty waiting to come out!
wow frame looks great!
I'd love to see a restoration series on this car!
Just to help you out. When the car drags on the trailer. Put the jack under the ramp and jack the ramp up. Then you can just keep winching the car and don't have to worry about the jack slipping off and hurting the car.
Great video glad you posted keep them coming
Man, what a beautiful car, I hope you bring it back to its deserved glory. It is going to be a hell of a job, one I couldn’t even attempt, but I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted!
_Only in Texas, Ben! Thanks for trying to save yet another C3. Great 1972 parts car for certain._
Parts car....are you kidding, all it needs is a ls swap
@@trentdawg2832 _okay it may be a darn good candidate for a resto-mod as well. One thing for certain, if this was a drop top it may not have sitting so long, alone in the cow pasture?_
Hope to see more of this car in the future, nice deal finally making it happen, I’ve had a few deals that took some persistence to get get the owner to finally let go.
Super cool car!! Good luck with your build
Ben, do the 72. Get it back on the road. I’ll buy it.
Thank yoy
Keep saving them.
Some people, especially farmers, like to hang on to everything and never let go until they die or the family puts them away. In my younger days I would work part time helping setup estate auctions and farms would have everything the owner ever bought squirreled away or if they no longer thought it was any good left in junk piles somewhere on the property. I remember on farmer had every car or truck he ever bought tucked somewhere on the farm. The story was if the vehicle broke down he would go buy another and let the old one sit and use it to store stuff in. Opened the trunk on a 1955 Oldsmobile and found blasting cord and blasting caps. After that we went a little more slowly digging the stuff out of the old cars.
Channel locks or Vice grips n blaster always save the day! ;8)
that's sad someone would leave it like that
Why did the guy take the hood off of it and let it sat outside for 5 years. And then he actually said it should run that's too funny
I hope you video the restoration for that car would love to see the end result
awesome 72, love the chrome on these cars. hope you can find a good motor for it, cuase that one is shot. body work is rough but repairable. what blows me away is it was close to home. hope all goes well for this one , when do you think you will work on this one as a project knowing customer cars come first.
Glad that you saved her. Of course it would be great to bring this C3 back to original, but without the original block, which way will you go?
Why would anyone especially with a barn leave this outside to rot. The body and chrome are great.
Good video. Watching from Seguin Texas
I am hoping you will restore the 72 Ben.
Thanks Ben! 🤗 🚖
Since its a chrome bumper its dosnt matter its condition its still worth the rebuild
Hey Doc you drove by it (5) years so you knew it was what it was.You knew what you were getting and did you realy think the engine would be good. also you brobably got a good deal on it. So it is what it is now get to work and bring it back or resell it or what ever.I am a fellow Texas Boy Born and Raised Y'All. God Bless
Give me a thumbs up if you think Ben watched the movie Corvette Summer
Love the 72 last year two chrome bumpers I have a 66
Wow that vett is in tough shape
This car is well worth doing so please do.
Looks like someone forgot to grab the hood unless I didn't see it. LOL
Its in the back of the truck at the 5:52 area, parts stacked on it... Just a quick blink of it.. :)
What a shame it was neglected for so long. My brother had a 72 big block convertible. It was this 17 year old's dream. His wife blew the motor and he swapped the short block and sold/traded it for $6,500 & a Dodge Dart. I wish I could find it now.
Do the 72!!!
1970 corvette is best
It looks like it has a nice intake. Take it apart. Salvage the best of it. A 72 Vette is a breathtakingly car back in my younger days with the hooker sidepipes added. Hopefully not too much rot. Also a plus - doesn't look like it has been drilled on back deck li for the luggage rack.
Water displaces oil therefore, the oil could be raised up and the crank is sitting in oil..
You may be surprised. The rings etc will still have moisture rust, but might be fun to tear down and video.
It was be nice to see what becomes of that car.
Cows rub them self's on everything I'm surprised it doesn't have a huge hole in in it somewhere. Nice find.
It does, pass rear fender
another great score thanks for saving the C3's.
I hope that you do decide to work on this 72 Corvette. It will be very interesting to see how it goes, how long it goes, in the process of getting a car back on the road, it hasn’t had a hood on it for five years. Looking forward to watching the process of you getting it back on the road.
I would love to build this car . Great score.
Man the body seams looks like they are splitting,,,hard life
never will I understand why anyone would do that to any car sell it or put it inside
Congrats on finally getting that 72👍🙂 She looks like she's got a good foundation to start with minus the motor if only they hadn't removed the hood. ☹️☹️
Second video RUclips sent me. Yes I subscribed… this is awesome!
Dude, nice cars. Both got T tops and back pop out windows. Either one is good.
“I know it’s going to a better home” “one day when you get it all fixed up we go for a ride?” Ben in his head This will will donate so many good part s to other cars gonna start stripping it as soon as I get home!!! Lol some people are delusional to the value and condition of their car
One’s nostalgia is priceless, but worthless to anyone else.
72 for sure last year of chrome bumper front and rear your so lucky to save that one this from a guy who owned a 70 350 horse 350 4 speed
Great video keep up the great work 👍
This makes me so sad. Can't afford one even if I found one, and I definitely couldn't repair one.
This is definitely a car that leaves you wanting to know more. It was obviously blue/ painted over in white. Blue interior. Wonder what the vin and serial #s can tell you.
I've started worce .
Thanks for the video. I know it will bring you some cash as you sell it's parts.
Put a big bad big block in it, a 4 speed, make it drivable, and have fun with it
Interesting that it has angle plug heads. Great video BTW!
Nice 1980's el camino in the background!
Good to see some 68-72 chrome bumper C3s on your channel. Would be cool to see you do something with both of them, but if I had to choose one I would say do the 72 as the body looks untouched - looks like someone flared the wheel arches on the 70.
Wondering if this is my old 72. The guy I sold it to came all the way from Texas to SC to get it. At least 20 years ago
If you still have the vin we can compare
How much did the guy charge for the rats ?
You going to rescue it or part it out?
Ughhh,,, dealt with the same type scenario. 69 F100 Custom Cab parked next to a shed in a yard. In solid decent shape when I first saw it. I offered the owner $$$. Nope, owner not interested, wouldn't sell for anything. Truck slowly rotted away and sank into the ground as the years went by.
One day owner knocks on my door asking if I'm still willing to buy it for what I offered. Are you kidding me? Nope,, not interested, wouldn't buy it for nickel. By then that truck was rotted out.
Nice 👍
