    Pro tip: Find these sounds in your environment (grocery store shelves, billboards, restaurant signs, etc.) Any time you can connect the abstract (letter sounds) to concrete things in their world, it lays big foundations for literacy. Teachable moments are everywhere just waiting for fun and meaningful discovery!

    7:30 - Japan STILL teaches to memorize. My wife (Japanese) asked me to help our nephew with tenses in English. I told her I would. She also went on to say that he needs to memorize the tenses. I told her that I DO NOT teach memorization. He is going to learn to use them; not to memorize them. She said that's (memorization) is how they teach in Japan. I told her that I don't and will never teach to memorize. I teach to produce and use. She said, okay and I went to teach him. Later that day, our nephew looked very happy and confident that he could learn and use the tenses. He told his dad that he was very happy with my lesson and could follow it. He said, "I wish Uncle Manny (My name) was my English teacher. His classes are fun. My English teacher's classes are boring." His dad paid me, but I told him that I was happy to help and you don't have to pay me. We're family. He gave me the money anyway and I gave it to my wife for her beer money.

    • @TheVivaciousNerd
      @TheVivaciousNerd 2 месяца назад +3

      @@annelewis7435 By teaching the concept instead of memorisation. Children naturally enjoy learning, we kill that joy in school by making them learn in unnatural ways… when it’s harder and makes no sense, it’s not fun. But understanding a new concept is usually fun for kids

    58:18. When to do this (kids see it as just more school)
    Tip: bath time is excellent for this. Foam letters that stick to the walls, squirt guns to shoot the sounds. Bath/body paints to write on the walls or the child then splash/scrub off the sounds. Then incorporate bath toys with those first-letter sounds. So fun!! Definitely not school.

    Your wisdom and love ( which makes one intelligent for their student ) would have changed my life and my kid's.We got thru ADHD and Dyslexia with A PRODUCT CALLED SING SPELL READ AND WRITE. The kids loved putting the "rule breaking" words into a jail !! So little frustration - the words were breaking rules , the kids off the hook The set up "Go Fish" game and review and matching the cards with words and like an OWL picture made it stick . Your games I love. I would have had so much fun with my daughter , and so much less failure as perceived . My Tutees were at the library and didnt need this tutor in 6 months - some reading on grade level three. This is a program even a tutor might use. but your method is better and even easier with tiny steps. but the other is next best and could direct a tutor if needed.If I knew about you , I would have gone with you much earlier . Thank you for loving kids - your genius.

    How about multi-lingual families? I aim to speak Russian to my kid while my husband speaks English (and he is also French...). The main language for our family is English (we live in France) but he is used to speaking to me in Russian more often. Should I teach him Russian alphabet or would it be ok for me to teach him English alphabet first? Could we teach him 2 in parallel? I'm a lot more likely to do this work with him than my husband. Anyway, I'm quite confused about it and imagine that you get the point.

      Autistic special education teacher here. Your question is more of a speech pathologist question regarding the child’s ability to produce or express sounds. I only watched the first half, but from what I’ve seen, the video covers primarily the comprehension of sounds which is not the same topic.

    • @sashadavis4446

      Exactly!! it's pronounced "Luh", not ul, or ool. That will confuse the child moving forward. The L sound says "LUH."

    • @kitchfacepalm
      @kitchfacepalm 5 месяцев назад

      Nothing to do with UK or US. They are simply doing it wrong. There is a lot of ignorance surrounding this, even where professionals are concerned. It isn’t pronounced ool, lu, luh. Position the tongue where it naturally sits to begin saying an L word eg lettuce. Don’t move it from there, and say the letter quickly. No continuing to voice it as the tongue is moved, hence no uh sound either before it or after it. One doesn’t say ulettuce, or luhettuce or oolettuce

    • @sashadavis4446
      @sashadavis4446 5 месяцев назад +3

      The way I taught my daughters when they were growing up was to use the "Luh" sound for the letter "L" and other consonants, I had no problems. They very quickly got the point, but that doesn't work for many children as Spenser says.
      I watched one of his video where the child was strugling to blend sounds do to that extra "UH" sound at the end of the consonants. He kept adding it as another syllable. Spenser's way is better for sounding out those letters, to me, although I was successful in the way I taught my girls.
      He's spent much time and effort in learning and teaching children how learn letters, sounds, blending and reading. He a genius, he's patient, and he's knowledgeable.
      As I move forward in teaching my grand children, I will follow his lead. It's so rare to find a "Teaching Gem" like Spenser. He should be cherished. When I made my first comment, I made it without watching the whole video and just based on what worked for my girls.😊
