I wouldn't say the best but definitely one of the most influential. Just listen to Tony Joe White and Mark Knopfler, there's a lot of JJ in their playing
I love how Eric Clapton, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, steps back and plays back up to his mentor and friend, the incredible J.J. Cale. He was showing the love and respect he had for this man. Amazing.
Guys, I think it's truly a blessing for us 50 and older, to have experienced what REAL TALENTwas... Nothing else is to be said since our era was the freedom and ❤ years.
I miss the joy for life and long haired men. They were good looking had they kept their locks they would be drop dead gorgious still instead of looking aged. Don't take me wrong I still love them.
Oh, I am so tired of hearing this nonsense. How did you forget to say the musicians in your time did not need Autotune? That usually comes into the geezer rant at some point. As a teen in a small rural town, when I discovered the Beatles, my parents and all their generation dismissed them as not fit to stand in the shadow of the musical icons of their time. (Later, when we were driving in the car and Paul sang "Yesterday" on the radio, my Dad admitted he was wrong. That's one of the reasons that though he is long gone I'll always respect my Dad -- not many people have the character required to admit being wrong.) Every generation by necessity chooses the sound that resonates best. By definition, other generations will not feel the same. How could they? What we experienced in our formative years will always be with us. And later, we will not be able to identify with other generations' favorites, because we heard them at a different stage of life. Me, I'm a rocker and could never figure out rap. But I know better than to put it down. Rap comes from a place beyond my wildest imaginings as a teen. Just because I do not understand it doesn't mean it is sub-par. Only a self-entitled idiot would feel that way.
Two thing I like about this besides the obvioius. Michael J Foxx on drums and how much Christine is enjoying this set. She has probably played this song a thousand times with JJ and it still gives her absolute joy to be playing with him and Eric. It so good that we live in a time when these moments are preserved.
@@jankotznicht6029 Agreed. Eric doesn't try to blow up the song or take over the stage. He just seems to find his place among the other players and slide right in.
JJ just oozes simply pure fluid smooth cool without even trying. One of a kind with a back porch, easy, funky style unlike no other. Back from a time when music and talent stood on its own. Stratospheric props to Eric to reverently taking a supportive role in backing up one of his preeminent heroes. The smiles say it all.
Well considering that Eric was on Heroin for much of his career and JJ was a close friend... Maybe its not just "coolness". Great musicians, music and people either way!
@@NormenHansen That part of his life was mostly in the early 70’s. He finally kicked heroin then alcohol became his major vice into the 80’s. That almost killed him. Eric took a lead, but I think he was a bit intimidated by J.J., who was the master of this style. And Eric was not intimidated by many other guitar players, having had to come to terms with his limitations after watching a guitar genius who turned out to be a close friend, Jimi Hendrix.
Just before this song, they performed After Midnight, at the beginning of the session, JJ motioned for Eric to the mic. Eric smiled and shook his head. He allowed JJ to take the full lead. This was respect for the great JJ. Notice the smile at the end? Eric was having fun

Agreed, and I am under the impression Eric showed up at this gig to help J.J. draw a bigger audience. J.J.'s health was not good and it shows. But he had this wonderful gift of saying so much with so few notes. B.B. King did the same. After a certain point I outgrew the shredders. Or maybe I just outgrew myself.
