Another excellent video to compliment my Sunday morning breakfast! 😊
I’m a big fan of Dublo, it’s quite incredible that these old trains are well over 60 years old and are a tribute to the good folk at a Binns Road, Liverpool who will have long passed on.
The lithographed wagons and coaches have a charm all of their own and although they may have some scratches and ‘dings’ they just add to their character.
The locomotives are beautiful pieces of miniature engineering in their own right and nothing beats the sight, sound and smell of a long rake of Dublo wagons rattling around on three rail track.
    😊

Reminds of those old Jouef mechanisms. Took me some time, and 3/type of locos, to crate a both bogie drive version of the old SNCF B'B' 14000 class, and C'C' 40100 models (+ directional lights since I upgradeing old stuff). I also made a 2 motored old Hornby Class 31 and a Piko BR 130. But the BRexit killed all my other plans to get more British models, or to do similar "improvements" to more old Brit stuff. + the luxury tax what we have here on models...

Hello Oscar, great fun again this morning. I must try the drinking straw fix to the Mk II coupler problem. I really like the Co-Bo loco, it was an oddity in it's time but it appealed to me. Your 3D printer is proving its worth with the components you are able to make, that washer was perfect. The layout is filling out with track now, there soon won't be space for anymore. Like others, I am eagerly awaiting the completion of the overhead section, I can't imagine where it will come back down. We were snow free and +10c yesterday (18th) but today we are under 3" of snow again.
    Regards, David.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Год назад

Good afternoon David the sound of all that snow and the temperatures you mention make me shiver, bright sunny and crisp here today with just a little ice not frost on the cars this morning, I was quite pleased with the replacement washer/bearing/bush I made, still haven got around to replacing the print head/hot end on my 3-D printer, had fought with it quite a bit around the time you were here in the uk with cooling fans at the print head, had them both of them out and cleaned up with switch cleaner and they have been behaving very well right through the Christmas period and into mid January at which point I have come to a halt with printing for the moment, so I haven't used for just over a month now but hopefully it will spring back into life when needed. I had got to the point on the railway where I needed to start fixing a bit of track down before I could continue with the overhead section and spare time has been in very short supply. As I have been operating on a print as needed basis making the elevated sections it seemed wise to stop printing parts, I should be back in a position to resume the development of it in the next couple of weeks.
      Take care.

    Hi Oscar,
Replacing the screw on that non-motorized bogie with a shoulder screw will alleviate any binding potential with the threads against your 3d printed part AND with the chassis being forced against the bogie. Unless there is a need for continuity betwixt the bogie and the chassis, installing a Teflon washer between them will reduce friction as the bogie turns.
    Loads of fun watching!!
    I do enjoy your adventures

Thanks Oscar for another entertaining and informative video.
You touched on how the Co-Bo was and unpopular model when new.
I came across some comments on RMWEB of how unpopular it was in response to a question on whether Wrenn ever produced the Co-Bo : -
But think about it, if the H/D original was unpopular and hard to shift, there would have been little financial sense in making it again even with with the diecast body. According to Michael Foster, only 130 Co-Bos were sold in 1964 and 3,150 were in stock when Lines Bros/Triang took over Meccano/Hornby Dublo. Or to put it another way, Triang had enough Co-Bos for 24 years worth of sales. Some must have been moved from Binns Road to Margate as Pat Hammond says that 725 were taken into stock at Margate, and I'm guessing these would have been the Triang Hornby overstickered examples. Triang did have some success in moving them, they included a coupling converter wagon in the price, and apparently had sold all but 120 by the end of 1966. How long they remained on retailers' shelves is another matter. This information would have filtered down, I'm sure, to Wrenn in Basildon one way or another.
This sort of common overproduction by Hornby Dublo, far in excess of their declining demand, was likely the dominant reason they asked Lines Bros/Triang to buy them out at a knock down price.
Speaking about the Co-Bo , Richard Lines was very unimpressed when Triang had the unsold Co-Bos delivered to Margate.
Now the scarcity make them far more desirable.

Good morning John, thanks again for the info, definitely has a bit of history this locomotive, not terribly successful in service or as a model. I'm sure I've read that consideration was given quite late on to adding yellow warning panels and the possibility of lighting being added was explored, but these ideas didn't go beyond a few preproduction examples for evaluation.
      All the best.

    That was an enjoyable episode.
One of the very few issues I noticed with the co-bo is that you would've noticed the bo end pick up is ever so slightly shorter than the standard pickup, and unfortunately it's just the right length now to straddle the diamond at low speed.
You can use a standard pick up if need be, you just have to bend the ends of the pickup spoons to clear the bo bogie frame. Just if you feel like converting a two rail and have a few standard pickups lying around...
The shorter pickup was shared with the EMU.
I think that's a bit telling actually: dublo had their standard 3 rail pickup. some had the plungers, and some had the shorter pickup. This ringfield was 3 axle, same as this one, but this ringfield was a different one shared with the 08, but on a 2 axle bo bogie, and not interchangeable due to the drive mechanism, and of course this ringfield had the long drive armature. This ringfield had the small magnet. Not to be confused with the 1/2" motor on the other bo bogie on the EE type 1.
I mean, meccano wasn't even thinking along adapting a standard motor to different frames, but they had the 3 completely different motors in production at the same time, not only that but non interchangeable variances within those individual motors. And Roland Hornby couldn't figure out why they weren't making money?!?
    Good stuff Oscar

    Hi Oscar,
Lovely Co Bo and it’s not until the body is off that you realise what workhorses these models are. I suspect, and this is not a criticism, that they are ‘over engineered’ for their purpose but to be kinder to them, ‘built to last’ is more appropriate.
I liked the meat wagon with the block of wood and printed detail, simple but effective.
    Great drinking straw tip.
When any domestic pumps or sprays are finished I usually snip off the plastic tubing, it is quite rigid and has a lot of uses if you only need short lengths.
    Regards,
    Gordon

Hi Oscar, Excellent video, don't you just love the noise the 3-rail loco's and wagons make. I am a huge HD 3-rail enthusiast and have eight HD Co-Bo's in my collection (although five of them have been repainted in fictitious liveries (Neverwassass)). Did you know there are two body casting for the Co-Bo? Apparently quite a few of the early examples lost their (flat) battery boxes during handling so the Meccano revised the casting and added strengthening ribs on the sides of the battery boxes, although these are generally only found on the 2-rail models. I will look forward to your further video's showing more HD.

Hello Oscar. Thanks for another wonderful video. The metal lithographed insulated meat wagons & guard's van are very cool. The graphics lithographed on to the metal makes that Hornby Dublo rolling stock so charming. Even though since boyhood I have been a Tri-ang fan, I did buy some vintage lithographed Hornby passenger carriages at a train show in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2019. I really like those carriages, the window shading, printed on detail, they make me smile when I see them on display. Also, I really like how you've expanded your layout. Hi Oscar, Great to see the Drinking straw trick in place.. Simple solutions are always good?
Fitting the "early" turntable between the loops is a great idea... Although these Turntables worked well, their use was a bit limited, with only one inlet and outlet track? This is a great way to get extra benefits from one of them..
The Co-Bo is a great loco .. Simplicity at it's best? Reminds me a bit of Tri-ang's efforts with the R 55 chassis. Much heavier though and obviously better traction.
This "mixed" layout is really progressing well.. It is nice to see a number of trains running at the same time..
The Catenary system was introduced during the Series 3 track era, so it would not be "out of place"?
Perhaps if you have a spot, where some "early edition Catenary wires" could be used as a demonstration? I think that you mentioned having some in an earlier video?
I have always found the Tri-ang Overhead Power Supply to be quite interesting? (It's odd that some of the later 'flat surface' Pantographs were better suited to the rounded ends of the early wires, than to the "joining sleeve" on their later version of the wires)?
A definite "Thumbs up" to the new layout.. It's coming along great..

I've used some Standard track (plus sidewalls) on an incline on my layout - took a lot of sorting to find pieces that hadn't warped, narrowing the gauge. I found a 9v PP3 battery that gave a good indication of usable track - if it slid easily between the rails, that was good, but if it started to bind and trap the battery that piece of track was probably not usable.
