1/2) I think Ha-Eun's transition into Harrison represents a common human fear or anxiety about aging out of playfulness into a world that is cruel. Ha-Eun represents that childlike wonder that is innate in us all, and his transition to Harrison is the transition we all must come to terms with. Furthermore, there is a simultaneous transition from Ha-Eun's Korean heritage into a more palatable Americanized cultural identity. Ha-Eun must become Harrison in more ways than one. To be accepted as a "productive" body, he must shed the heritage that might conflict with that transition. Ha-Eun feels specific, it feels intimate, it feels known. The product of cultural heritage passed down through love. Harrison? Harrison is anyone. Harrison has to be everyone, so that Harrison can be no one.
Amir's gonna end up with a best-selling book of poetry by the end of this. It's like watching a guy fine tune his poetry AS A JOKE to subvert his friend, but they're getting great lmao
