    I think the Polaris will just be, for most players *fun* to use. And that’ll be enough for them.
    As for the torpedo problem, I completely agree with your sentiment. But I think the torpedoes being very vulnerable to enemy active defences is a good thing. It encourages volley attacks against stronger enemy ships in an attempt to overwhelm an enemy’s defences. Which is quite similar to Cold War naval doctrines. I think that could be fun in itself, having long range missile duels with enemy capital ships where things like signature, obstructions and point defence matter a lot.

  • @drksideofthewal
    @drksideofthewal 8 дней назад +10

    I think the idea with torpedo gameplay is to destroy the enemy’s point defense guns using your own guns, or fighter escort before using torpedoes as the finishing move. We see a bit of this concept in Squadron 42. And even without torpedoes, I’d still rather have a crew of 7 in a Polaris than a Hammerhead. The Polaris would likely demolish the Hammerhead in a gun fight.

    • @Space-Tech
      @Space-Tech  8 дней назад +2

      In a straight on fight I agree, those hammerhead turrets may even be a size too small to severely hurt armor like the one on the Polaris. So much yet to figure out! What draws you the Polaris the most?

      I have no idea why everyone always thinks in 2 dimensions and 1 v 1 battles. If you want to take out a ship with PDS you just need multiple Polaris all ranging and firing from different angles. Send the fighters in to distract the PDS then coordinate torp firing so many torps are heading at the target at once. PDS will be overwhelmed and target destroyed!

    • @jimrussell4062
      @jimrussell4062 8 дней назад +3

      Not sure that's really a "problem" and more a matter of misusing ships outside their intended roles. Given the size of even Size 3 shields and turrets, what large ships are being "taken down easily?" A fighter doing under 1,600 dps is not going to take down a ship with 1,600 shield regen per second. Now 5-6 fighters? Sure... but then you figure you could put 5-6 people on that ship manning turrets and shooting back ALONG with the shields... so it's balanced. If you're trying to solo a Carrack or something.... well, that's misusing the ship. It can be DONE, just like you can solo a Caterpillar or a Hercules but you're taking that risk.

    I can appreciate the concerns you're presenting, but I think some of them focus too much on what the Polaris could do _now_ when the majority of us know the ship won't come into its own until later.
    Some of my considerations about the IAE release of the Polaris are:
    1. CIG is fulfilling the desires of many Polaris owners by completing the ship.
    2. Putting the Polaris in the hands of players now will give us the chance to truly realize the scope and requirements of operating such a large combat ship.
    3. Orgs and loose coalitions of players will have the opportunity to learn the ship inside and out in preparation for when server meshing and expanded gameplay makes the Polaris a viable asset.
    4. Players using the ship will provide feedback to CIG so bugs specific to the Polaris can be fixed while also giving them information vital to the development of other capital ships, hopefully decreasing completion time and inherent bugs.
    I don't own a Polaris, but I'm hoping #4 above is true and has a positive effect on the development of the Perseus that I do own.

      I can appreciate your blind loyalty and willful ignorance of the companies history and development direction (or lack thereof) but there's really no indication that any of this will ever "come into it's own" at any point in the future.
      1)CiG is getting paid for relasing a new unfinished ship
      2)How can it give you a sense of hte scope or requirements of what the ship needs when it will be almost certainly changed within a few months of release to drop it's power level down in order to make whatever new ship they are releasing at that time look better?
      3)People will have the ability to learn any ship whenver it's released. This is a moot point.
      4)They are getting you to pay to do quality assurance and testing for them, instead of paying people to do it for them as is industry standard

      @@StopYTShortsthis was an L take. cIG has expressed that while they prefer that we play with other players, solo players will still have their place, and that includes solo pilots in oversized ships like the Polaris. AI Blades will give them basically an auto turret, and while blades aren't as accurate as a player, it still gives you the function you need to enjoy the ship you bought. Then AFTER 1.0, we'll get NPC crew, which can perform the more menial tasks, like engineering, repair, and keeping the ship clean

    • @jimrussell4062
      @jimrussell4062 8 дней назад +1

      There's a place for solo players... and PVE players too. It's just not in massive ships. You can easily run a freelancer or prospector solo. Do some gem mining. Box missions. Cargo hauling. Bunkers. Even bounties and rescues. Just not with a Polaris. It just doesn't make sense. Now granted, you can do as you do now and FLY a Polaris alone. You COULD do a box mission with it. Nothing stopping you from doing that. But why should 1 person be able to stand up to 5-6 players pirating/griefing/whatever? Do you expect a solo player to be able to outshoot 5-6 players in ground combat? If not...why in space combat?

    • @Venhili
      @Venhili 8 дней назад +6

      @jimrussell4062 Nah, people will still be able to operate their big ships in PVE situations, regardless of whether you like it or not. AI Blades WILL make turrets auto turrets, that's the whole point, to make sure that players who bought these big ships years ago can still use them in solo situations. Otherwise they would have never mentioned AI Blades or NPC crew. Yes, NPC crew is post 1.0, but ai blades can do basic shit, like manage power and use turrets.

    The thing of the Polaris is (i think w/ the addition of PDC) fighters are needed for taking out enemy PDC then once those are out you can lanch torpedos adding extra steps for capital gameplay
    Like, PDC allows near instant kill torpeds but requires that the Polaris needs help to achieve that

  • @shonen84
    @shonen84 8 дней назад +1

    Thanks for this overview!
    I think just like naval corvettes, the Polaris will be a combat focused core of a small (anti-) pirate group meant to deal with threats to assets like bases, space stations or trade routes. The medbays and hangar provide both limited scope littoral and fleet operations. In larger groups, they can indeed fulfill a “tip of the spear” or reserve/flank role (like in the CitizenCon demo) as a torpedo strike force, protected by fighters and supplemented by Ares, Eclipses and Retaliators.
    In terms of trade, multirole, exploration and solo roles, there are many other ships that do these jobs a lot better. In fact, I think the Polaris won’t be able to do fulfill these roles at all due to staff, ordnance and fueling requirements.

      The game is going to have to change alot before release to be viable IMO. Everyone wants to be Mal Renolds or Captain Kirk no one wants to be fuse swapper # 7 on a Javellin or Gunner #9 or move scrap from the grinder to the cargo area of a Reclaimer !!! Sure ships will have to be full crewed for large scale combat operations for best performance but day to day I just don't see someone wanting to sit in my Polaris turret that is just flying to guard the cargo caravan or some miners and not shooting at anything,. How boring gameplay is that? CIG is going to have to have NPC crew and Blades to allow people to fly their ships, even the big ones! They can have missions available that requires larger fleets to destroy larger alien fleets or pirate fleets then people will crew up together and go do those maybe AKA Space raids but day to day grinding multicrew is just a pain. Even in MMO's getting groups together to run dungeons can be a chore sometimes even in a guild people have lives run late, don't show up ETC now imagine having to go 2 systems away to pick up someone because your gunner didn't show up today!

    What I see is that everyone seems to be forgetting that we were able to cap and fly an Idris not too long ago and that it was pretty fleshed out. I wouldn't be surprised if we see its release on IAE or next year's Invictus and with that I'm certain we'll see some new missions for these classes of ships; just as we have cargo missions that require different ship sizes, I hope we'll see missions that require at least one of these ships to be present in the party.

    You're asking why are they releasing the Polaris now, without it's gameplay?
    The same reason they're releasing 4.0 without dozens of it's originally scheduled gameplay. Money.
    CIG has been making two games at once for 12 years and with close to a billion dollars. Players and backers are growing impatient. Twelve years and still only 1/100 systems and none of the fan favorite ships having been released (Polaris, Perseus, Kraken, Idris, Javelin, BMM). The dream is dying. Fans are losing faith.
    To make matters worse, CIG is making their far from stellar track record even worse by continually pulling a "gotcha" scheme with concept ships. They'll hype a concept ship up, say it's next for production, announce it's new gameplay capability, take the money for the pledges, then reverse their statements. But, it's not first time they've done this.
    2023 CitizenCon, CIG announced they were making the Galaxy and then the Perseus because they shared a lot of the same assets with the Polaris. Shortly after 2024 CitizenCon, CIG announces that the Galaxy in-fact does not have many common assets with the Polaris and will therefor forgo it's immediate scheduling for production. But, conveniently, CIG has already made a base-building ship to replace the Galaxy. Funny how that worked out.

    I believe its being put out as a placation, to show progress, and it does need testing as top of the food chain to see if it performs as expected. I think if we see how it performs, balancing will follow shortly after, not necessarily to the Polaris, but possibly to other ships or armaments that should be competitive. I recognize this may be an overly positive view of the scenario, but as an owner, its a hope. I don't plan to roll out with it other than to give it a good once over and fly about for a bit, I wholly expect it to a bit of a burden to fly and get minimal use out of the torps without proper support. As well I imagine once the newness wears off, it will quickly become a selective use toy, given a likely extensive respawn timer.

    Some realy good points here. First of though they said there where no need for capital ships before pyro and enginering, so the reason we got it is money and good publicity before IAE. From what ive seen the PDS is working verry well against this torpedo's. Because this means you need to take out the PDS systems before shooting the torps, and that is where small fighters come in. This game wont meet my expectations if 1vs1 caps, it should be war not fights. Multi crew on its own is wierd, I have such a hard time seeing people basically sitting and waiting to get on the turrets when the shits hits the fan, So they should either have placeholder NPCs, that other players can take over when it happens, otherwise turret gameplay will be fun the first 2-3 fights after that its tedious waiting gameplay.

    Before they can take this and maybe 2 other fighters out in the weekend. But I hope the missions you get to do with this ships, doesnt necessarily gives you the money back but other valuables, like blue pring, exotic weapons/components, blueprints etc :) So its an investement.

    You're only thinking of torpedoes. It's also a "militia/patrol ship" so it's also for fighting pirates and exploring. Yes, Hammerhead can do that now too but the Polaris can do what the HH can and more for the same amount of crew. I'm thinking of upgrading the Carrack to the Polaris because the Carrack doesn't really offer much more than the Polaris (and in many cases less) gameplay. The only advantage seems to be the drones (not in game) and range. Everywhere else the Polaris is just more useful. Bigger hangar, bigger cargo bay that are more accessible, better ship layout, etc.... as WELL as the combat capabilities. Essentially the Polaris is an option to do both Carrack and Hercules roles to a large extent...while still being combat useful. It's a "jack of all trades" for multi-crew. No it's not a daily driver or good for solo, but IF you have the multi-crew to make a Carrack or Hammerhead work...then you have the crew to make a Polaris work. And to be fair, it's more flexible than a Perseus which doesn't have the cargo, hangar and scanning capacity (but admittedly you can use very effectively with 3 crew so it has it's own niche too) Now if you want to say "big ships don't have enough crew" then... sure.... you can make that argument but that's not about the "Polaris" that's also a number of ships from the Carrack to the Starfarer to the Hammerhead, etc. So you're really criticizing having ANY of those ships in the game at this point, not the Polaris in particular. It's not really a "concern" of mine because it just means they are there for later. To me it means that multi-crew is getting "closer" because there's soon to be a critical mass of ships that fit that category. It's chicken and an egg really. You can't have multi-crew without ships to use them in. Sure you could do multi-crew for any vanguard or freelancer, but you don't NEED it like a larger ship so it won't be used much. It's only with the larger ships that there's a desire to USE a multi-crew system (engineering, NPCs, Blades, etc) And once you get 5-6 ships that can use that system.... then the system becomes seriously implemented. There's just no use while the majority of people are soloing anyway and you don't have the ships for it.

  • @Wanaskiwin
    @Wanaskiwin 4 дня назад

    I was always told by atleast 3 huge communities that NPC crew will *NOT* exist. They should look at Avorion on how Torpedoes are balanced. Torps in that game generally have decent HP, high speed and manueverability but they're usually still quite stoppable if you're prepared enough, or simply faster or beefy enough to ignore them, heck even From the Depths has some good ideas for that but these are examples of course and not "Do exactly this".
    Though if Barotrauma, Void Crew and Pulsar lost colony have taught me, Engineering can be handled during combat and those ships are generally paper next to what the Polaris is. Barotrauma atleast gives us AI crew (who are too stupid to man my turrets usually and i don't trust them to pilot the submarine) but i'd be annoyed and surprised if they went nearly as in depth as barotrauma can get with engineering. I've spent months building just one submarine and wiring it and i only know how to wire basic stuff like reactor to battery to component and theres so much more than that. I suspect it will be no harder than Void Crew or Pulsar, so if you want a good idea on how you'd fare mid combat and suddenly needing someone to take a wrench to the warp core, go play one of them, it really shouldn't be that hard to under crew a polaris, besides, if you've got a dedicated player for torpedo management and you're in desperate need of some engineering you're no where near far enough away to properly utilize those torps.
    I personally see the Poolaris being more of a backline ship though, if you're going into gun range you've done it wrong. yes its beefy with some decent shielding but using it as a spearhead wouldn't be ideal. its more like an archer, ships like the Perseus are for sure the tip of the spear since its way closer to a destroyer. I think the reason Torpedo gameplay is sometimes hit or miss comes down more to the fact that you've got a stealth bomber that is vastly less visible than the ship sized missiles you're firing out, and if the torps are being prioritized over enemy ships attacking your torpedoes target then thats probably more of an AI thing (unless its players who are being incredibly smart and properly prioritizing targets).
    Edit: Im remembering all the times in Void Crew where my buddies and i would get interdicted and summarily go from having like, two gunners, pilot and an engineer to having 3 engineers and a pilot. The idea of having a dedicated torpedo controller after remembering what those interdiction fights were like amuses and mildly infuriates me.

    Valid concerns for sure, great video! Relevant gameplay for the Polaris probably is year(s) away outside of any major org operations you touched on. We need the new damage system, ship fires, and engineering for even a chance to have great combat experiences with this ship. Without proper damage control (touching on the three items I just listed), a tactical, more naval-style battle won't be possible. There will be a long honeymoon phase after release, too, and it will be interesting to see how much interest wanes without the crews to fill these. The need for NPC crew (imo) to fill in the gaps is critical for these ships. It will also be interesting to see how many people reconsider owning these larger ships without the resources to crew them.
    Time will tell. If you think there's a chance you'll use it in the future, I'd hang on to it and not apply the chain. Just have an exit strategy in place for that money. I paid right around $200 for my Odyssey as my big ship purchase, and I wouldn't be thrilled about melting CCUs if I was in a similar position myself. Hopefully the Odyssey works out for me, but it's big and it could grow in size/crew, leaving me in a similar boat someday.

    These are great observations and I did worry about how many there will be but I didn’t think about how few crew there might be available to help operate mi e as they will need crew for their own! I did decide that I am not building my CCU just based on gut feelings and how much change is yet to happen in this game up until 1.0 and beyond. Now you’ve helped me consider why more clearly. There will be many Polaris crew opportunities I believe but generally I don’t like bug crews preferring the 2-6 range for being more manageable and for comms reasons. Lots of great ships in my CCU chain so will be holding off for a while to see what happens.
    I think the Starlancer TAC may well be a nice three crew alternative to the Polaris

    Initially, without engineering, hauling
    With engineering, a jump from a Lagrange to planetside won't require engineering feats, and on arrival in the back and forth, maintained to avoid later problems
    This can be done solo, and with MM, engagement is not required but to go Nav and depart from perceived or possible threats
    Point defense turrets will help, and to have crew manning further turrets is preferred, but imo not a requirement for hauling
    I do believe the Polaris will be able to take a good amount of punishment
    Personally, i might haul in it, however my Taurus is preferred
    But i feel the same about the Ironclad Assault
    At this point, either the Reclaimer or Polaris is a required asset to obtain XL hangar

    Its just about getting an org fleet ready. When the day comes that systems are opened up...Orgs will migrate like swarms of insects to stake claims on newly opened systems. You have to imagine a verse with two or three systems. All orgs busy building and acquiring ships and building materials, and suddenly CIG announces another system or two. How long away? I don't even think about such things. I am simply blown away by everything thus far. The pace is picking up. I can melt a few right now and have this, and I think I will, yes at IAE. I will keep this, the Starlancer, Mole, and Vulture....Ursa Medical Rover, and ATLS and that new mini truck.
    I am in an org but never really checked in really cuz I just play solo. I am Looking for the serious Org run by someone who really gets it.
    Orgs will be able to keep ships manned 24/7 and keep the battle going 24/7 when bed logging fully supports, and the need to be manually put into a group goes away. I think having a tag for Org should be enough to join a crew. You bed log out and back into an open bed simply by having the Org tag on. That should be enough. Then its battle on.

    Even in the current state, the Polaris is also still Tier 0. Why is the firing control in the basement? It should be an operator panel in the bridge. The panel in the torpedo room should be a mini-game which determines at very least how fast the tubes are reloaded. Lets not be crazy or anything and combine fuel or warhead size. That would be actual game play. But no, in order to ensure the pilot cant get up from seat and go fire torpedoes, they put the console in the basement. The same applies the engineering. So many mini-games from cooling and power distribution. As to the lethality of torpedoes, they are a standoff weapon and should be very dangerous. The current PWD have made them useless. PDW should be to soften or final kill after turret gunners shoot have did some damage. Thus the reason for someone to be manning the big globe and direct gunners while providing the captain situational awareness. In short...too late...the Polaris will turn into base until a bigger ship comes out and battle of torpedoes will die down after a few weeks. Soon to see people in chat asking for crew members just like we say with every new large ship.

    I think it is criminally underpowered at the moment, and I also think way too many people just overlook some very glaring issues, like for example I hear people say "oh it just needs 12 people to function", like, are we playing the same game ? 12 people in any game is very hard to get in a single vehicle but in SC it is even worse because by doing so all those players agree to being extremely weak and play a very boring role (sorry but even the "best" form of multicrew gameplay is just sitting in a turret and shooting, this isn't engaging at all and anyone who does that repeatedly is just going to get you burned out)

    I wouldn't worry about it we had our torpedos get nuked as they left tubes twice yesterday the first time blowing the S6 gun into tomorrow, the 2nd time the whole ship with it.
    Torpedos are to be used with disceretion, it's the other guns, and being able to be used as a transportation ship that's what the polaris will be used for now. You also can't shoot one unless the target is at least over 3k away.
    Believe me the torps are balanced, if you try doing what the person did yesterday "USE THE TORPS, USE THE TORPS!" right after the torp launches it got shot down before it even made it past the bottom of the ship and he was also the person in the S6 turret when the Torp got shot xD
    You don't know how hard I was laughing at that.

    i think the polaris will get a lot of use and finally bring crew game play because no one wants to crew 2 size 3 guns that happens to be the common turret!!!! but on a polaris all the turrets are 4 guns! now thats fun! now on your big ship i can be as or more effective than a fighter with 4 guns!!!! now we have a ship that can fit 22 furies snub fighters this beast is going to cross that threshold into promoting group play.
    BUT!!!! i watched citizen con and know every idiot in the game will try to buy the pioneer!!!! some think this ship can be an operations base hahahaha yeah if you force it or got nothing better. but what makes these idiots, idiots is that the 1 and only thing the pioneer is good for requires a minimum of 50+ active players in ops!!!! some idiots will buy this ship not being a CEO or officer in a large corp!!!! the large corps dont need you to donate a pioneer because they already own many!!! and already know who will fly them in ops and will not allow a low ranking member fly their own pioneer in any corp ops because they will want you to be crew or support for ops.... you need a pioneer crew but wait theres more!!! you need a defence of the pioneer but its useless if you dont have mine crew and salvage crew gathering the required materials that you need a logistic crew to ship materials to a refinery crew then get the prints from the science research crew..... the idiots who own or want to own a pioneer will see how they will never have a use for it if they cant mobilize a massive fleet ops!!!!
    unlike the pioneer a Polaris can operate on a skeleton crew. not advisable but possible as for a pioneer it is impossible unless solo you want to spend 9 months in prospector while your prints research in a ground station or endeavor need to spend 9 months gathering prints. then you need few weeks to refine figure out how you can run your own logistics and pay high rents in high security only to build a dry dock...
    people if you want large ships get a Polaris if you want to build get a galaxy or lancer BLD.... if your not an officer or CEO do not buy big multi crew ships like the Polaris because the CEO and officers will not allow corp mates to board your big multi crew ships!!!! i would know i try to join big corps and get players to join me the high ranks say i need training and they own all the big ships and more that the org will ever use!!! your additions will be ignored.... all you need is a starter and a connie at best

    NPC crews is MUST for 1.0. Its absolutely ridiculous that NPC crews wont make it, meanwhile more than half of the ships in SC are multi-crew ships... So you either forced to play with rando's or forced to join an org. Both are very tedious.
    Imagine wasting hours a day trying to find people to join your large multi-crew ship before even actually doing a mission or so. Not to mention, there is no incentive for people to waste their time to be on your ship, besides the "wow a cool ship" factor. There are no additional rewards or perks for crew. There is no functionality for a crew roster and payment system.
    So owning any large multi-crew ship is just laughable, and going live without any ability to even have a few NPC crew members on the largest ships, is just disappointing and depressing, especially considering the game has been in development for over 12 years!
    I have POC'd automated turrets and basic NPC crew functions in Unreal Engine 5, it took me less than 3 weeks to get it half decent functioning. And this doing it by myself in my spare time... You cant tell me that with around 600 devs working on the game, they cant figure out to make NPC crews work...

    the Polaris will start day 1 nerfed into oblivion!!!! you have to practice your dumb fire shooting because there is point defense turrets that can kill a full 4 torp volly without getting danger close!!! but if you dumb fire a torp defense turrets dont shoot at torps!!!!
    so if you can hit with a dumb fire torps then your gods among the stars! if you target fire the torps you will burn a lot of top money and get no results then likely die!!!
    i dont believe torps or missiles have any place in a 700 year future... just ask Israel.... their iron dome has been keeping them safe! the enemies have been using dumb fire munitions to hit back. when we have lasers that can eliminate ICBMs. its just a sign there is limited future... just like mines have been removed from world power arsenal but a few third world countries use them for now but in 700 years we will be in space unlike now where we have to use roads where our enemies can only expect that we would use this kind of weapon in a bottleneck tactic there are no bottlenecks in space!
    i bought a polaris but i also have an eclipse... if i had to choose between the ship i can use frequently and stealthfully vs something that will get very little use because there isnt any NPC crews and i dont know enough people to fill one. i would choose the eclipse over the palaris. my fleet has grown so large that i should be a org CEO or officer or my fleet will never see a day of use

    All this heated debate about nerfs and buffs is pointless without the full vision of ship gameplay realized. Engineering alone will shift everything around again. Like all the salt the Redeemer changes caused. It’s actually fun to fly now, same for the Corsair, it’s a good thing when ships incentivize playing together. You should be at a big disadvantage flying solo in multi crew ships. That’s the point of a mmo type game, playing together.
    Also not everything needs a silly placeholder mission like bounty hunting is rn. Our Org does quite big fleet battles regularly, a ship like the Polaris is a godsend for this!

    Imo the biggest size of ships they should have ever allowed a player to get is either the polaris or the idris in size. No javelin. No 1.0 bengal or whatever. Limiting the players their options in capital ships and looking at realistic player numbers for them is key. If lucky, a big org can try to manage at least one idris and maybe a hammerhead and some fighters. But all in all. None of those people involved are going to be online 24/7 to man those ships. And maybe some would like to do something else then babysitting a big ship whilst nothing is happening in a PU. Its also eating up large amounts of rescources and time to develop said big ships and their gameplay

It's extremely childish to assume that what YOU think is best for the game is what CIG is going to do. CIG already has very clear plans for the future. It doesn't cost them 1 damn second of work time for the SHIP TEAM to build ships. The ship team exclusively works on ships and nothing else. That does NOT impact the overall development of the game.
