  • As a way to avoid going for a run or going to the gym, many people have probably used the phrase "I'm allergic to exercise" as an excuse. However, many of us have probably never considered it to be something that could actually be true. Yet, being allergic to exercise is a real thing. The condition is called exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) and is characterized by symptoms of a severe allergic reaction that occurs during or after physical activity. This video discusses food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) in which an allergic reaction occurs during exercise when a specific food is eaten before or after exercise.
This video was made by McMaster Demystifying Medicine students Andy Fensham, Angela Gupta, Navi (Harmandeep) Dhaliwal and Viktoriya Dyubanova.

I’m grateful to see people making videos regarding this when I first started having EIA episodes I could find nothing on it and no doctors believed me that I was allergic to exercise and it was always the combination of certain foods and exercise. Almost took me out a few times . Was scary to experience especially when I didn’t know what was causing it.

I had 3 allergic reactions but couldn't pint point the cause except for a long list after a allergy test. All 3 episodes were after eating and exercising. I search and found similar cases and videos like this on RUclips. Thank you for the information. My only problem is that I'm very active and work as a gym teacher

I’ve had this my whole life; noticed the moment I started playing with other kids. Consistently get a clean bill of health on my check ups, eat pretty healthy, and I’m fairly skinny, so I highly doubt mine is dependent on food intake. In order to avoid it, I take otc allergy medicine to stave it off long enough in order to get whatever done that I need to get done, whether that’s working out or just running errands.

I have this too. I had to go to the hospital after 30 pushups. EIA is very serious. I’m working to push past this. It’s very difficult and takes an emotional toll

Have you found what triggers your allergy?

    • @punkgrl325

@@ajoyforever210 Exercise, specifically the heat your body generates from exercising, and maybe certain enzymes breaking down while it happens and your body perceiving it as a threat and producing histamines in response. Unfortunately, no one really knows for sure.

    I have this but I don’t get hives I
Get what looks like blood clots under my skin and a extreme itch that makes me feel like I’m gonna lose my mind. The things that look like small blood clots on my legs will last a week to two weeks . I also, at times, feel like heavy in my chest and see spots like I’m
Gonna pass out but I have never passed out. I can’t walk long before the itching starts . I have tried everything before actually going to the doctors about it. I walk out side or in house and it happens. I’ve tried with and without clothes it still happens. I have eaten before and. It eaten and it happens . Tried washing before and not washing and even tried taking Claritin and other allergy meds and Benedryl and nothing helps . It’s so frustration .

I have it,any physical activity triggers the condition, after fast walking, jogging and at the earlier stages of running as my body starts to heat up,my body gets very itchy and uncomfortable....not easy to manage!!!

I have had the same problem since childhood. My Dad ran in marathons and couldn't understand that I had this problem. He still, to this day, doesn't seem to fully believe that this is a real condition. Even my husband says things like " just fight through it!"... it is depressing to be honest. I would literally need to take allergy pills daily prior to any exercise to help, and that doesn't seem like a healthy choice either.

@@treasuringpricelesstime5962 lately i have been practicing relaxing and breathing techniques trying not to stress about anything and just stay relaxed without any physical pressure and it worked out well,it has been 4 days i didn't have any symptoms no hives :)
I think it has to do more with stress and neurological and psychological pressure....at least according to my case!!

@@Keallei nope i don't get those reactions mainly i get hives in my back, i would recommend running as it is the best way to drench your body with sweat as running helped me a lot to the point that i don't even think about hives or see it as challenging like i used to do before at the beginning of every run, now it is no longer an issue thanks to God...

How did I get exercise induced urticaria, asthma, and anaphylaxis that is not food related? Nobody in my family has this that I know of. I’ve had it my whole life. If I have kids, would I pass it to them?
I have had Omalizumab (Xolair) injections for about 6 months. It helps with the burning lungs and itchiness and hives but I still get the asthma part. This is a big improvement. So I try to add my inhaler to my routine to reduce the breathlessness.

      @@ajoyforever210 hi there
I'm a medical student and I'm also having this condition
So from my experience the symptoms will be more serious if the person is not consistently exercising and suddenly he do an activity that produces a lactic acid that the sedentary people will not manage it's exertion as an athletes (in simple words)about the food i think if you are Food dependent like me it might be fish, eggs, tomatoes....
There is no treatment just avoid the food that causes this symptoms and listen to your body and be consistent with your training
      Best of luck ❤🌹
