If you know me, you’re well aware that I’m a huge fan of older cars, especially the forgotten and obscure cars from the '80s and '90s. However, occasionally the logical side of my brain functions properly, telling me that old cars aren't always practical for a daily commute. So today we’re going to review the cheapest crossover available today, the Hyundai Venue. Hyundai let me borrow this adorable little SUV for a week. Is this compact car killer any good? Let’s find out! Join me for an in-depth look at this tiny, value-packed crossover, as we explore its features and take it on a road trip!

Would you consider a Hyundai Venue? If not, what would you buy instead?
For those that like my '80s/'90s car videos, don't worry, more are coming! Occasionally manufacturers let me borrow new cars and I simply can't pass up the opportunity! If you like my '80s/'90s videos, there will be a new one next week. Thanks for your support! :)

We still get the Accent hatchback up here in Canada...so that would be my first choice from them. I'm a big fan of Hyundai and of cheap and basic cars, so I would prefer that a CUV.
That being said, the Venue and Kona are only CUVs I would consider buying right now because they are still small and more car-like. I like the fact that you can get the Venue with a manual transmission still in base trim, as I love driving stick.
The Venue is pretty much just a Hyundai Accent underneath. It's the same platform and drivetrains, I believe.
I have been thinking about replacing my wife’s 2008 Saab. It is still a great car and runs awesome but it just has so many little problems that are going to be expensive to fix. One of them being a rather large oil leak. I’m thinking of getting her the new Nissan versa but may consider this after watching your video thanks dude!
Can we get the Kia Rio hatch here still? We need a review of those. Accent hatch seems to have disappeared. ...and the HR-V is OK, but too expensive for us cheap folk. Maybe Corolla hatch? I dunno. I am just waffling as I am realizing no one will be making a car to my liking when I get ready to buy again. Please do review all small, cheap cars you can get your hands on.
The viewers may start to worry about the channel's direction if Ethan ends up suddenly with three Lamborghinis.
I don’t understand how your video was not on the top of the list when researching this car on RUclips.
This review was absolutely perfect, the way the video was shot, the montage, the colors everything was on point. You covered every important point and showed great examples. I really liked how it bounced from the exterior and interior to show a bit of both.
Also loved the red shoes to match the car.
Very nice review should definitely be on the top of the list. 👍🏽
I love the Hyundai venue Its just as small as I want it to be its not too small or too big I hate big cars
Yes...I'm getting ready to buy one very soon! I've already taken one for a test-drive, and am planning to go to a different dealership so I can drive another one. And I'm not a "millennial", which everyone keeps saying is who this is made for...I'm just over 50, lady Navy veteran. I love this car! I haven't had a new car since 1991, and I'm quite excited about it! I've watched about 100 reviews of it so far. All the negatives that everyone points out don't bother me. ;o)
Hi,
I planning for buy hyundai venue but I still looking for positif and negative point.
Please, What negative points did you find?
Ditto. I’m in my 50’s and haven’t had a new car since 1991. And this is what I’ve just bought.
@@sweetblack3088 I can't wait! Plans keep getting derailed tho, ending in disappointment. But each time things start looking up again, it's still this car that I want.
I'm a 52 yr old lady, and I've been looking at this thing for about a month now. I might get one.
You still digging it?
@@sonja4164 absolutely! Just not a position to buy right now. I thought I was going to be because I had started a new job but it's not going to work out to get a car. Going to have to wait but this is still the one that's on my list.
Bought the 2021 Venue SEL as our secondary car; getting around town for errands and going to work (without having to drop off the 2 year old)....so far it works perfect as that.
I have it as a rental this week, and I have been putting it in sport mode to get on the freeway or for passing. I’ve been having a great time with it so far.
VENUE...Perfectly adequate for the average driver without a family or the need for a larger SUV.
Way too much emphasis is made on speed these days, I own 2 newer H-Day Santa Fe SUV models and luv them even with 0 to 60 times at 9 seconds.
I work 2 miles from home and don't go too far from home on days off. This would be a perfect vehicle for me. Don't feel the need to spend a lot of money when over time is goes down in value. I would be a good candidate for an electric car, but not at the prices of today. Really liked your review.
It’s very interesting that the subcompact crossover grows to satisfy two very different purposes. That’s why it’s taking market share from subcompact sedans and hatchbacks.
The first purpose is a city car, which should be small and short to accomodate limited parallel parking. Giving drivers and passengers a more upright and taller seating posture reduces the length of the car.
The second purpose is an inclement weather resistant car. The “snow” driving mode should clue you in. People aren’t looking for a true outdoor car that can run a Paris Dakar rally, they just want something taller that doesn’t instantly get stuck in a little snow, or be terrified of a little pothole.
As you can see speed is not an important consideration, because both roles don’t need it.
Great review- I’m a big fan of the Venue, test drove one recently and I was impressed
You helpe me make a decision. I love it. Looks like just the thing I need for my simple life. Thanks man.
What a great review. Thanks for that. I've owned expensive and complicated cars, and older simple cars too. This really is all I want now. Basic, and easy to live with.
Thanks for watching!! :) :)
Bought my 2021 venue in September and love it - yes looks small but plenty of room inside - love the style and look of this mini suv - I know it comes with complimentary oil change BUT I’m not the type that lies to wait hours for an oil change - I just did my own oil change with the help of RUclips video ( just wanted to be sure since it’s a new car to me ) and it’s so simple to change the oil and filter and I’m just the type of person that likes to work with my hands - driving on the freeway or streets has the same great response as far as steering, handling and noise is not as bad as some people say it is - it’s fun to drive - I highly recommend This fun, great looking vehicle- great job Hyundai 👍🏼
Have you had any transmission problems?
Does doing your own maintenance void the warranty?
@ Chris Perez- not that I’m aware of - sorry I can’t give a more definitive answer to your question - I change my own oil because it’s easier for n my time schedule to do it myself
Great review dude! I just love your channel. I became a subscriber when you had the fifth Avenue i believe? This is a great review probably the best one I’ve seen on this little SUV your channel deserves more subs for sure great job!
Looks like I’m buying a venue! The situation you mentioned about getting your first nice job & not wanting to show up in a hand-me down car is my exact situation 😂
Snow Mode transfers power to whichever front wheel is not spinning. It's basically half an AWD system and would be highly useful when stuck
Having started driving in the early 80's I always smile at reviews citing an 8.8 sec 0-60 as slow. That was a turbo Trans Am back in the day, lol. Anything under 11 was 'pretty quick' then when a mid-size Malibu with a strangled 267 V8 took about 14 and high school kids drove around in hand me down slant 6 Valiants or Volares :)
Yep! I actually edited out part of the video talking about this. Maybe should've left it in. You're right, 8.8s was pretty damn quick in the '80s!!
@@HelloRoad Over in Europe 8.8 sec 0-60 was almost hot hatch territory back in the eighties. And if you lived like me on the less fortunate side of the iron curtain, the same acceleration took you 15-20 seconds at least. Heck, we even had new cars (Trabant and Polski Fiat 126) which had 60 as their stop speed :D
I started driving in 1980. Our family car was a 73 Duster Slant 6 that seemed very slow until it was replaced with a 1975 Fury sedan with a Slant 6. I would be surprised if 0-60 in the Fury took less than 15 seconds. On average, cars today are far too powerful for the low skill and highly distracted people driving them.
I didn't realize how small the Venue was until I saw one in traffic next to a Ram 3500, its TINY! I like the boxy looks but I'm just having a hard time finding pros over something like a Corolla or a larger CPO vehicle for the same price. Great video as always, thanks for adding segments to it!
A SE Corolla hatch would be a much more refined driving experience with better mpg for just a few bucks more.
Corolla they are not in the same class plus corolla is expensive and happens to be the most stolen car in the world
Nice review, the retro tie in at the start was great. It would be cool to include a couple of other throwbacks here and there, ex: when mentioning the 0-60 time, see if you can find an Excel's rating from the 80's as a contrast. Keep it up 👍
Thanks for the review. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!! :)
Ethan, We are about the same height so the head room and passenger room are really impressive for a vehicle with this footprint. Sadly, in 2021 the fuel economy of just 31 mpg is disappointing.
I would like to see the new Yaris Cross come to our market to offer this level of space efficiency combined with 60 mpg, independent rear suspension and AWD. For the record, they sell a manual Venue in Canada which would probably be more fun to drive.
I love the review man! Finely made...
Thank you! And thanks for watching :) :)
Getting to buy one soon in scarlet red color. So excited!
As far as acceleration, most people at traffic stops are asleep at the wheel and I'm usually off the line and two or three car lengths down the road ahead of most.
Was looking at buying a Hyundai Veloster 2.0 6 speed manual as a daily driver, then I saw this. Sat in a Venue, and it felt like sitting in a Mini Cooper. I love value at a low price.
"No adaptive cruise control" I only learned about adaptive cruise control a month ago when I drove my parent's Santa Fe so I'm not too worried lol
Great review 👍🏻
Its a nice package for around town driving (Really like the Moonroof and LED lights), but its just so darn slow. I do like it!
Had a forester for years but I live in So Cal in the city and this is perfect, I have the denim.
I LOVE ETHAN'S REVIEWS.
I love the look of the Venue
I love watching car reviews
Wasn't sure about buying this, but after hearing "huge volume knob" I'm in lol
😆
Honest to the point thank you
Inexpensive transportation, yessir I felt that one. Good presentation
I feel like people really need to test drive it before people say it's too slow. Idk how but i actually pass most people up on the highway on my venue comfortably plus I use sport mode
Is your mileage less with sport mode?
@@fremontpathfinder8463 was getting around 38mpg on normal. Did sport for about a week and got about 32mpg. Slight difference
@@dallaskegley7900 Thanks so much. I'm trying to choose between the Venue or Corrolla Hybrid
Have you had any transmission problems?
@@JTHRISSE95 no issues at all with the venue
It’s absolutely perfect small suv at a Perfect price, great for city and suburb driving, highly recommend
I’m upgrading from a 2010 Accent to a 2023 Venue Limited. It has everything I like!
Rented a Venue twice...nice and fun car to drive... I like it!
Actually considered one of these, had a 2016 Kia Soul, was an ok car, started having issues around 80k miles with the catalytic converter. Traded the Kia for a 2020 Toyota CH-R and boy the difference in quality is great...
Soul is made in Mexico, this Venue is made in Korea and your CHR is made in Japan thats the difference in terms of quality
Absolutely love my venue!
Great review Ethan 👏. You touched on so many things people should be aware of when looking at a car and yes I would consider it for what the cost is. Only draw back for me is the lack of power. With a bigger engine or a turbo I'd definitely consider it but I could not part with my 09 VW Tiguan for this. I'd miss the turbo when I need it .
The key word for this video "adequate". I'm planning on buying this soon, I currently have a Nissan Micra, so it's a step-up for me =)
Driving a rental 2021 venue nice little car rides nice has plenty of power for express way driving great gas mileage
It's disappointing they got rid of the 6 speed manual for 2021. Of course, they only offered it on the stripper SE model, but at least it was something.
Rad flavor at the beginning of the video ;)
Great revue, thank u
Thanks for watching!
I got my venue last month and the passing speed is great especially if you put it in Sports Mode.
Can you switch modes while driving or do you have to be stopped ?
Thanks for mentioning your height. I'm 6' 3" as well - amazing you don't have the seat all the way back in such a small car!
That's a cool 😎 looking little thing. Reminds me of my 84 Dodge Omni. But it had a 2.2 L
engine.
My car has 109hp and I have no issues passing on the highway. The car I had in the 90s had way less than 100hp.
Buying this as my *first car* next week!
Awesome!
the one is south africa has soft padding on the doors in leather, it’s quite good
Can you get it in black on black with black interior a full moon sunroof double laminated tinted windows and a black grill
I'm sure this will do very well but it sure would be super fantastic if it came in 4x4 and beefed- up roll cage with running lights and please have the LCD screen mounted inside the dash not like a floating laptop but overall I really like where Hyundai is going with this it reminds me of the Kia Sportage but I really want to see this in off-road 4x4
I’d consider it as a replacement for my current “traditional” (BOF) SUV. Gets double the mileage and looks like it has decent cargo space. I’m trying to hang onto what I have though, for now... Gas mileage is abysmal, but it makes up for it with relatively cheap insurance and no monthly payment.
Yes, my wife and I just bought the Denim Venue a we real like it.
Nice! Glad you're enjoying your Venue :)
Keep going with the new car review! I’m actually looking forward for this one compare to the old cars.
What’s the name of that color I’ve ordered the scarlet red pearl I have yet to see it in person but I’ve seen pictures and every picture I see is different but in your video it looks like something I’d like great video thank you
I BOUGHT ONE,I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
How about rear cross traffic alerts? Is this available on any trims? Your review mentioned BSW but not RCTA.
Very good video Appreciate.
I want to buy the car hyundai venue , but I heard that the engine consumes a lot with poor power. Is this true?
I’m torn between the Venue & the Soul. I’ve always loved the Soul since it came out and then Hyundai introduced this… so not fair! I can’t decide. I want both for me and the Mrs. 😁
My wife and I on the denim version. And I really enjoy it. There's a lot room in the cabinet and there enough speed. No issues driving up to New York from Virginia. All-around great value for the price.
I.... I..... I actually like this 😶
I bought one and I love it
Nice!!!
How much installment dear
It looks like designer was a bit inspired by ancient lada niva, generally looks retroish but not fancy retro
Theres been discussion about the low beam headlight..ie normal not being very good. Is this right..or not the case.
How reliable is their version of the cvt?
Our Versa Note's transmission was going and I saw this. It looked smaller than the Versa inside :(.
BUT, I couldn't tell what it was supposed to be, surrounded by all of the other SUVs/crossovers on the lot. Not as spacious as the Echo in the backseat, either.
I'd like to see a lifted version with a roof cargo basket. Also needs bigger tires to fill out the fenders.
So you want to see mine souped-up California style
@@stephengarland4826 Sure
@@stephengarland4826 yeees , photo please.
great video, it would make a good dd for a lot of people .
id honestly would spend more and get a mazda3 if i was in the market for a small vehicle
I just don’t understand the trim configurations on the 2022 Venue. Why SEL has sunroof but not on Limited? Why SEL has wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto but Limited doesn’t have it? Why did they take heated seats away from SEL compared to 2020 or 2021? So confusing!
Which has more space, Venue or a 2020 Honda Fit?
will this car be sold in the uk
I think I will go with the 2021 or 2022 Kia Soul because of the HP. I currently own a 2010 Kia Soul with 150,000 miles and I like it a lot.
Yeah I’d probably go with the Soul as well.
I wish it had an AWD option...I would need it in NY.
I looked at one of these but didn't drive it. Also tried the kia soul turbo, but ultimately bought a RAV4
yes
Im driving a car now that fills up 640km for about $45 on a fill up how much does this car give on a fill up of gas and how much is it
If it had AWD and a more powerful engine, it might be a consideration.
I'm pretty sure Hyundai will offer one of their turbocharged engines in this at some point in time.
The Venue in India has a turbocharger and air vents in the back row. But I believe the gas MPG is lower. Do to the extent Weight of the turbo.
M wife has the Denim Veneu. And she really likes it a lot. And she has a Leadfoot and in Virginia we don't need AWD. These not enough snow for it to be a problem.
@@stephengarland4826 yes venue here is available with 1.2 non turbo petrol,a 1.0litre turbo petrol and a 1.5 litre turbodiesel. people worry about cost of running per kilometer than anything else. also, cars which are sold in large numbers here, have a petrol engine with max capacity of 1.5 litre.anything beyond that is really not needed. we indians are very energy efficient people.
Reminds me of a modern scion xb.
Has anyone had problems with this model losing oil? Not burning, or leaking, just disappearing?
we don't have that in CVT, only in 6 A/T
Commenting today specifically because I want to continue to see new car reviews on your channel.
Hyundai venue is Good Design SUV and fuel efficiency, Specially RED 🍒 color. Also include CVVD technology in the engine.
What rpm at 120 kmhr ?
I still think the new Ford fusions are a better deal since they’re bigger and around 15k for se models. I walked out with a new 2020 last week for just under 10 including my 5300 trade in. Now is the time to buy before they sell out.
Man, that's cheap!
have and love the car.
Is this good for long commutes? I drive from Palmdale to the San Fernando Valley on the forest highways
Decent gas mileage, lots of interior space, easy to maneuver. Not the most comfortable interior but probably acceptable for this price point :)
Side note: I think the Limited comes with padded arm rests. 😁
I recognize this song. From electronic gems channel.
Reminds me of a Forester! Throw it on some BC coilovers and call it good lol.
Quick way to ruin a car. Awful suspension.
Love my venue❤️🤍❤️🤍 I put in a order for a red one took too long for it to come❤️ end up with a white one, 🤍 It is all good. I add all red to bring out the white laugh it I have had it for a month now in May my birthday was February I love it so much🤍❤️ happy birthday to me 🙏🏽🌹🎁🎉🎊🛍
Super cute, but needs a hybrid or all electric!
0-60mph 8.8? Here in Australia it's 11 seconds with the same engine. On the other hand Suzuki Vitara, which is lighter and has a 1.4 turbo engine is 8.8 seconds. So how did you get 8.8 seconds figure?
Pretty sure Australia gets the 1.6L "Gamma" engine, here in North America we get the 1.6L "Smartstream" engine. Same displacement but different designs. And we get a different transmission. But I wouldn't have guessed it would amount to that big of a difference in acceleration 🤔
Price
I like it. But I want my first car to have a more cargo space. In case I have a child in the future. Maybe this or the soul 2024. And I would like both of cars to have sunroof
good
Great review, but, not for me. Wagon?
I'm over the SUV/CUV craze. Sedans, wagons, coupes etc need to come back. That said, I would love to see you review the Kia Carnival. At least that is in the minivan market, and those at least aren't an SUV/CUV.
Still, great review. At least this thing isn't egg shaped like every other one of these today.
