DOWN THE HALL
(Bonnie Raitt)
Had the flu in the prison infirmary
My last day I looked up and saw
A man wheeled round the corner
Down to skin and bones that’s all
I asked the nurse where he was goin’
She said ‘hospice down the hall.,
He prob’ly won’t be in there long
Any day we’ll get the call’
I asked if they let family in
She said ‘not really at the end
Truth is, a lot don’t have someone
No friends or next of kin’
The thought of those guys goin’ out alone
It hit me somewhere deep
I asked could I go sit with ‘em
For some comfort and relief?
Next thing you know, I’m on the ward
Doin’ things you can’t believe
Like shavin’ Julio’s bony head
Crackin’ him up when I wash his feet
I used to run when I saw Tyrone
Knowin’ your place’s what it’s all about
Now he’s here doubled up in pain
Cancer eatin’ him from the inside out
I sit and wait outside his stall
To help him when he’s done
Whatever shame we might have felt,
Well, all that’s come undone
I can’t undo the wrong I did
Give back the life I took
But maybe when it comes my turn
I’ll get a second look
I don’t know ‘bout religion
I only know what I see
And in the end when I hold their hand
It’s both of us set free

I have a breathing problem so my first night in prison in Lake Butler Florida was in the prison hospital and this little dried up looking man in the next bed died that night,I could hear the CPR attempts and later I could hear the plastic and tape as they shrouded his body so this one really hit me pretty hard,I'm so Blessed to have only had a few years in that environment and made it home again....GOD IS GOOD
PRAISE THE LORD!
Welcome back . Redemption is possible. Good luck
@@EricPalladiniJr thank you,I've been home for more than six years now and I thank God for bringing me safe from Florida prisons to have a chance to live free again with family and friends...GOD IS GOOD.
I have always wondered as a child how I learned and felt love for everyone. And one day . The world lied to me about how that works. So your story reminds me that I love you 💖
Thank you for your story.
My wife will tell you I have the sensitivity of a brick ... This song hit me like a brick. Stunning.
My childhood friend passed February 21. I swear she’s up in heaven. She inspired Bonnie in writing this song. Always dance with the angels 😇🎵😇🎵. Great song
Bonnie knocked me flat with this one! Her dear, departed friend John Prine would've been bursting with pride for her over this gem!
What a gift you are Bonnie. As a retired nurse now I remember so many faces many with no one there. This song hits even the most stone cold hearts. Or you are already dead.
Shades of Blackbird, and a truly magnificent song.....👍👍
I had a friend who became a healer after spending time in prison. This song makes me think of her and the days we spent by her bedside before she passed, free at last. Thank you for seeing all those who do this holy work.
Just lost my husband Tyrone. Named after Tyrone Powers, March 2nd 2024. To Cirrhosis. How I miss him so. He had just turned 50 in January of this year. He was 9 months older than me he always said. But he went to Comfort Care in the Hospital. The waiting was the worst part seemed like. But he passed peacefully at 8pm. He'll always be in my heart.
Thank you for a lesson in compassion. I needed a tissue on this one.
Made me cry. Awww so pretty a song. Dear God that was so sad. 💙❤️🙏🙏
Bono said that he found while caring for his ailing father that what we call dignity is a human construct. It is just that. Thank you so much for this honest and unsparing look at what caring for others looks like.
The organ, the guitar, the cadence and phrasing... this was a tribute to Prine. I can imagine him performing this.
Gave me the good kind of shiver, and a few tears.
Thank you, Bonnie. Ya done good.
Proof. Write about what touches you, it will touch others.
There is nothing better than a song that tells a story and is sang so beautifully and rich. So happy she's back.
She's going to be kicking ass rocking out even in her last breath..... Your words have inspired my art since 1971!! ♥️😘 Touched so many souls... And I'm happy that the new generation will carry the torch to the next generation...... 😘
…and she never left. I first saw her in 70 or 71 and i knew then that I’d be listening toBonnie’s music till I died. I’m 67 now i hope her forever. Thank you Miss Bonnie.
What a Song. Love It's way above me.
I soon will have the great privilege of volunteering at a new hospice in our town for the homeless and indigent. The folks who made this happen are true angels. 🙏
What a gift.
Beautiful song, singing and picking.
Reminds me of Louise, but even sadder.
No one digs in to where it hurts like you do Bonnie, you're good medicine all the way ❤️💔❤️
Listening to the simple guitar and voice and a great story made me think of Ferron and her songs like, "Ain't life a Brook"
Love you Dear Bonnie.... you brought me thru my darkest and lightest times in my life... grateful for your music... SO WONDERFUL! Best to you and yours.
Better than ever. ♥️
This is one of your best ever!
My husband was in Hospice care right before he died-this song is so poignant and loving. Thank you, Bonnie.
I love Bonnie, glad she's back and telling the tales so beautifully 😍 💜
The song is beautiful in composition and performance. But the service it recounts is priceless. Kudos, Bonnie, Kudos. I know about religion, and you're on the list.
I guess I never thought about someone dying alone in prison. Interesting take by the writer and trying for redemption. Thanks Bonnie for singing his words.
Jesus, Bonnie, I’m trying to eat my lunch but I’m sobbing SO hard!
❤
This is SO BEAUTIFUL. Please play it tomorrow night in Penticton.....
Amazing Raitt original tune she's fashioned from a news story into an epic, clear eyed folk ballad with her finger picking reminds me of some of her early 1970's gems, a sad, lonely prison story about redemption and hope in all the sad end of life stories while in prison, truly a touching and remarkable highlight from ..just like that"
This could have won the Grammy too !
what a beauty
Redemption is possible. Thanks for this
.Got seats to see you in August, with Mavis Staples no less! Looking forward to the new album and show!
Me too! Berkley in Sept!!
I lost my oldest sister last month. This song really resonates with me. So tender and insightful.
Love that voice , it sets me free .& oooooo that smile light my way .
Thank you Ms. Raitt…
insight like 20/20
Thank you Bonnie. You always seem to be there to share your brilliance to those who need it most. Worth the wait as always. Stay healthy and safe.💐
First to be blown away! 🙏🏼👏🏽🥰

Bonnie your music is moving and profound. Brought a friend and I though our darkest hours of broken romance. And many years of happiness dance and celebrations. You are a true blessing .
Hope you're feeling better, Bonnie!
some of us become attached after a severance pay............................................time seems to tell if nothing else will
What a heartbreaking song of such depth and magnitude. Redemption in prison from past wrongs simply amazing.
Heavenly reminder to the soul..
Everyone is a child of God...in my world!!!
Thank you Bonnie for this beautiful gift that brings tears to my eyes!
I might be an emotional schmuck but this song really released the waterworks. So touchingly beautiful and compassionate. Bonnie reaches deep down into the listeners soul and caresses them exactly where they need comforted. Damn is she good.
Suleika Jaouad is an amazing soul! Thank you for this beautifully written piece of art. She has turned the word humble into music 🎼❤️❤️
Thanks for telling this story Bonnie. It's something I wouldn't ordinarily think about. My friend is an optician who elected to service prisoners. He said there's a dentist there who won't use any type of numbing before he literally yanks a tooth out . He refuses. Your story is beautiful.
BEAUTIFUL
Hello Cynthia how are you doing😊
Glad to see Bonnie back! Have been a fan forever.
Bonnie Raitt, you sing to my soul...
Great as ever!
Tears.
Such a moving, wonderful song . . .
@BonnieRaitt-mq1yl You have cast light and warmed my heart for 5 decades! Such amazing grace.
I'd say this & Just Like That are 2 sides of the same song/life. Both are about redemption.
Excellent so much love
My step-perfect is on the phone with his day crying about a girl in Spain-I’m listing to this and feel that I am in the right moment.
Did Bonnie write this song? So powerful.
Hello there Rachel nice meeting you here
yes, from a news story she read, put it to this magnificent song..
@@jeffbilby9415 Thank you for the quick reply. What a moving song. She’s magnificent in so many different ways.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night....cannot really get past that lovely riff that is lifted here from the Beatles (Paul McCartney) song. Still it is a beautiful lyric and tune played and sung perfectly. This Bonnie Raitt album sounds very good though I am only a casual fan of a few of her other songs and albums.
Blackbird signing in the dead of night…
I was never sent away?
Wow, Bonnie certainly knows how to pick "em.
She wrote it 😊
@@kdc1153 Thanks. Excellent song.🎸🎼🎹
