Hi, @bigcatloverelys6405. Mine are on my back porch and under my deck with 24/7 camera monitoring but I think you have a good plan if placing them where larger animals aren't afraid to approach the shelter. The conflict between having a warmer animal vs a safer animal is always a difficult decision. Safer is probably the better option. One thing I like about these shelters with an awning is it not only shields from snow and rain but makes it harder for larger predators to get in the shelter. Thank you for helping the animals stay warmer.

I luv this video. Thank you, John. I'm making a couple shelters using your 2 door method. My neighbor and I share a majestic black and white ferral cat. Gorgeous. He catches all the mice and varmints. I also insulated in between the tubs with Pink Panther foam sheets. Gonna be toasty! It's the least I can do for him. 💗
You're welcome. Thank you for caring for your little feral. I always dread seeing the winter come because I worry about them staying warm. We now have 3 of these shelters and 3 commercial shelters with heating pads. There are now 3 ferals hanging around our house. We have been feeding one, Mama, for about 6 years. She is so precious. We also have 4 of them living in our house.
Great video, thank you! I watched a few times, took notes and I just finished making one. It turned out great, I made one small error, I trimmed the door flap 1/4” on both sides like the bottom, instead of angling it. I made this for a fearful stray, not quite feral.
Thank you for your kind comment, A Flo. God bless you too. These poor creatures are the essence of innocence and we want to relieve their suffering as much as possible. We just brought the fifth feral into our house and wish we could adopt them all. Thanks for stopping by.

A cardboard box in a protected porch corner or patio with straw or clean leaves would be better than nothing, enough leaves or straw to equal a foot or more, so they can burrow down for warmth.
@@donnaleveron6511 Good suggestion. I have actually done that before. I duct taped a large garbage bag over a cardboard box, added a door with an awning, and put lots of clean straw in it. I set it out until I could get more permanent shelters built.
@@donnaleveron6511 Good point. I actually made a temporary shelter out of a cardboard box wrapped in a large plastic bag and stuffed with fresh straw when I was putting these shelters together.

Thank you sir for your gentleness towards these forgotten sentient creatures who come to us for help. My question. Do you make and sell these? In my youngercdays this would not have been much of a project that i would have tackled but my arthritis has taken over my hands and joints. Im willing to pay for your time and supplies and sending. I live in NY. I would forever be grateful and the kitties too. I would start off with at least 4 and work towards helping others with their kitties in their yards. Would like to put my email but not sure if this is a no no guideline for you tube.
Hi, Rose. Thank you so much for your kind words. You are an angel for wanting to help these precious creatures. I'm glad you didn't include your email because you would probably be bombarded with strange emails from who knows where. Unfortunately, I don't make or sell these shelters. I have sarcoidosis and am ill much of the time. If you want to buy a well-designed, ready-to-use, feral cat shelter this one is affordable. You will need to put it together. It is fairly well built and you could make it even better by adding some Styrofoam sheeting insulation. Even without added insulation, it is much better than sleeping out in the cold weather. bit.ly/3QxYhTg
Thank you for your reply to my question. I read of few of the comments below and see that you haven’t had success yet getting your ferals to use the houses. One possible issue is the size of the door and the fact there there is a flap. It’s great for heat insulation but may discourage cats from using it because they don’t want to feel trapped or vulnerable to predators. I had a cat house that I used last year, and as soon as I attached the clear plastic strip flaps in the door opening, the cat refused to use it. Just a thought for you to consider. Thank you again!
Thank you for your kind suggestion. I have another video on my channel where I took one of these shelters and added a second door for an exit. I then cut the flaps in half so it is very small. I also took a bungee cord and raised the flap way up on another shelter. I have seen evidence that our favorite feral has gotten into the shelter with the small flaps and exit door. One reason she may not be using these shelters is she is spoiled. I gave her three manufactured shelters with a heating pad in each one of them. She loves them.
I started feeding the feral cats that moved onto my property, but 2 in particular have gotten pretty close, staying on my open front porch. I got an old cooler and laid it on a chair they had been laying on with the door propped up onto the arm of the 2nd chair with another large closed cooler between them that I put the food on. I put the chair cushion inside the cooler. I put a blanket over. It isn't completely covered since I didn't know if they'd know it was there or go inside? After a few days, today, I saw both go inside. I will see how they react to covering more or all the way with a flap or part of a blanket. Still a work in progress. I just thought this might be a quick & easy solution for someone else.😊🐆🐆
I just got a mrdical grade styrofoam container. Cut a 7in hole in it and was done. The styrofoam is about 4in thick they use it to ship medication that has to stay refrigerated. I paid $8. I put some strain and a mat that the cat liked laying on b4 the house was available
Hi, Pacheco de Castro. Thank you for your kind comment and suggestion. I have made shelters with two doors before. This is especially important in areas with predators. These shelters are right next to our house and we have cameras monitoring them all the time. We have lived here for 30 years and have never had any large predators like a coyote anywhere near our house. When I made these shelters I weighed the safety concerns with the need for the critter to stay warm. To a certain extent, a shelter with 2 doors is a bit of a wind tunnel. It is really difficult for a cat or possum to retain their body heat when there are 2 doors. It really gets cold where we live. Since predators don't come around our home and the shelters are mostly used by possums we opted for one door to try to help them stay warm. The awning also helps keep larger animals from entering the shelter.
@@Fixitforgetit thank you very much for your your kind response. You obviously know better what your surroundings and wildlife require. You do an amazing job. Best regards.

This video is awesome. Most thorough cat shelter video. I want to make a few. I wish I could make them possum and raccoon proof. No offense to those animals, I only want to help the cats.
Thank you for your kind comment, @autumn_b905. I made 4 total shelters because we have at least 3 ferals still in our neighborhood. We have adopted 3 as well. What's strange is the ferals have peeked inside a few times but never took up residence in any of them. We have actually had a couple raccoons go inside a couple shelters a couple of times but they never stayed in them. They just seemed curious. I was shocked that they could fit in there. The possums are our main takers. They love these shelters and since the ferals haven't shown an interest we just let the possums enjoy themselves. Thank you for helping the essence of innocence.
Straw if bought at hardware, like Farm and Fleet not that cheep. plus reflective tape. and boxes.? My friend had the awning but cut so she had side flap the used Guerilla Tape to keep the flap protecting the inside from the drafts getting in. Only problem was no cats, possum. skunk, and anther 2 years she had a mother squirrel
Thanks for your idea, Janette. I haven't had any trouble with them blowing away. They are fairly heavy with the two tubs and straw. I would ba a bit concerned about putting sand in them as the cats may think of them as a litter box. Thanks for stopping by.
Hi there, thank you very much for this video, and thank you for caring about feral and stray cats! I purchased a cat house similar to the one you linked from Amazon. The walls are made of a layer of wood, a layer of plywood and, for the interior walls, there is an insulated sponge liner insert included. But there is an insulation gap around theinterior top of the shelter (the roof lifts off) that could let a lot of cold in. We live in northern VT so it gets very cold, and I’m worried about this. Any suggestions? I’m thinking about adding an additional layer of the reflective material that you used in your cat house to the entire interior for extra warmth, and maybe even a layer of some type of insulation board beneath that. maybe I could just cut that same insulation board to fit the gaps around the edge of the roof. Thanks for reading!
Hi saltyqueen. Thank you for your kind comment and thank you for caring for the feral and stray cats. I have never used this insulation but it is affordable and looks interesting. amzn.to/4ewRfqF You could also try some foam insulation from Home Depot.
@ thanks, I’ve a need to build one. I’m not in a harsh winter environment. The lowest temps here are around 35 degrees and that’s unusual. I don’t know that I need the foil. Your thoughts?
If they were out in the woods they probably should. These are on our porch and are quite safe. The awning also makes it hard for larger animals to try to get in the shelter. Thanks for your suggestion.
If you are talking about insulating between the inner and outer boxes I think there would be enough room for that. There probably won't be enough room to insulate between the top of the inner and outer boxes. I only had enough room for a thin covering of straw on the top.
Thanks for your concern, @leonienolan511. These are very well-ventilated. The door lets air in and the top pushes up a bit due to the upward pressure from the straw. That creates a small air gap around the lid. The possums absolutely love these shelters. They are in and out of them throughout the day. They gather dry leaves and straw in little bundles and carry them in their tails to the shelter to make it their own. They are fun to watch knowing they are so much warmer with these shelters.
I built one of these very similar shelter for a female cat who had kittens but a raccoon got in and attacked the babies. how do i prevent attacks from other animals?
That's so sad. Thank you for trying to help the ferals. This is a difficult choice. If you only have one door the shelter is warmer but less safe. If you have two doors the shelter is safer but a colder virtual wind tunnel. Our shelters are close to our house so we went with one door. This is a difficult choice to make and worth a lot of consideration before making a decision about which style of shelter to make.
They can easily get in through the door. Here's a video of a very large possum going into one of the shelters. He is bigger than any of the cats that come around here. ruclips.net/video/RCWC-VwYBWE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Hi, LeahStormGaming. Straw is an excellent bedding choice for feral shelters because it has a nice insulating factor, won't mold as easily as hey, and tends to stay nice and dry. Since you are allergic you may want to have a family member or friend pack the shelter with straw so you aren't exposed to it. If that isn't an option some have suggested using shredded paper or cardboard as bedding. The downside is it is much more likely to get wet and freeze than straw and if that happens the feral cat will stop using the shelter. Good luck and thanks for helping these sweet critters.
Seriously, you can put up a homemade sign saying, "John's Feral Shelter." IT WOULD BE SOOOO CUTE. BY THE WAY I HAVE SHARED YOUR VIDEO...N WILL CONTINUE. THANKS AGAIN.
Thanks for the question. Mine are 2 years old and I live in an area where it gets 15 degrees or more below zero in the winter. So far mine haven't cracked.
Hi, Constance. I made these for feral cats. Unfortunately, the possums took them over. I have only seen a raccoon briefly go in one a couple times. The possums live in them throughout the winter. I wish the possums didn't go in them so they would be available for ferals but I can't control which critter decides to use them. Thanks for stopping by.
Love this DIY home! Hi fellow animal lovers! We recently purchased the Frisco Outdoor Wooden Cat House with Retractable Roof, by Chewys. Im feeding 4 feral cats as I await our local TNR group, and ordered 4. It is elevated and has a sloped roof with one entrance. Our yard has been bisected by a chain link fence - my husband is a carpenter. Im going to add straw and have a few ideas for insulation. Because I rescue large breed doggies, there's really no huge chance that any preditors will venture thru - and the cats are fed and will be sheltered in the back half of the back yard. Does anyone have any suggestions/critiques? Thanks very much!
Hi, Vanessa. Thanks for your kind comment. If your question is about insulation your idea of straw is excellent. Some people will also use styrofoam insulation. You can get sheet styrofoam insulation at Home Depot and cut it to fit. Thank you so much for caring for the ferals and thanks for stopping by.
say, what do yall think about burlap? or maybe burlap strips mixed in w the straw? I have a few rolls of it that i bought at tractor supply. thanks v much!
@@vanessalovesdogs7549 Straw only is the best option for bedding inside the shelter. Any sort of cloth, strips of cloth, towels, etc., will attract moisture from the cat's body, paws, and breath. The moisture in the cloth will then freeze and the feral will stop using the shelter. Straw stays nice and dry. Neighbors of ours put some towels in their shelter and soon after that the ferals stopped using the shelters. When we learned what they did we told them to see if the towels were frozen and they were. After they removed the frozen towels and replaced them with fresh straw the ferals moved back into the shelters. Thanks for caring for the ferals.
@@ms.creepyleeI use the outdoor heating pads from Chewy in some of my feral cat houses. (It’s the one that shows a rabbit sitting on it.). These pads are hard plastic with a chew proof cord. I only use the heating pads in my handmade wooden houses and yes put straw in with the pad too and haven’t had a problem. To entice the cats to use the houses I also sprinkle catnip inside. I have also used the heating pads in the feral houses made out of the large igloo or Coleman coolers but I have not used them in the plastic bin boxes, for those I just use the straw.
Hi, Migrose. I believe the door size on this shelter is 5" wide by 5 1/2" tall. I thought that would be a bit small for raccoons but we have seen raccoons go into some of these shelters without a problem. I think the only safe way to handle that concern is to make a shelter with two doors. You can see how I modified one of these shelters so it has two doors here ruclips.net/video/7yis_HJBTdo/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Hi, imakeituptoyou. I would think it is. The tubs I found had an odd shape so I went with the reflective insulation so I could follow the curved walls and followed up with straw on all sides, top, and bottom. We mostly have possums using the shelters and they seem to love them. Thanks for your suggestion.

There's a few feral cats in my neighborhood, they come around my house. I made a shelter similar to this one but the cats are not using it. I think it's because I have a dog. 🙆
Hi, Lilly. Thank you for making a shelter for these ferals. Hopefully, they will use it as it gets colder. You probably already know that if you have straw in the shelter they will stay dryer and warmer. Your ferals are lucky to have you.
Try sprinkling some cat nip in it to encourage them to stay. Once they get in there and get used to it, they'll use it more. I had to do that to some of the houses I've made over the years.
Thanks for the heads up, Genifer. I gave one like this to a neighbor and his feral is using it. We have a bunch of possums using them and they love them. We don't have any ferals hanging around right now.
You don’t need a drill to make a hole in plastic ~ use a hot glue gun which will not only make the hole, but will reinforce it without risking cracking.

Great video, thank you! I watched a few times, took notes and I just finished making one. It turned out great, I made one small error, I trimmed the door flap 1/4” on both sides like the bottom, instead of angling it. I made this for a fearful stray, not quite feral.

Great an clever job thanks John good huy sending love your way
Hi, @cynthiastretch844. Thank you so much for your kind words.

If you run a hairdryer over the opening drawn where you used a sharpie to draw it’s easy to cut opening with a knife..it cuts like butter….
Hi, vickie30. Thanks for the tip.
Wouldn’t a second door be important for safety and ventilation? Thank you very much for your beautiful work.

I agree because raccoons and possums should be able to survive naturally on their own without humans luring them in
Doesn't luring possums and raccoons in cause a threat to the feral cats
Thank you!
You are welcome, @dian970.

What about putting 1” of sand at the bottom… for weight, to help it not blow away?
Is there any concern with not enough air for the cat?
Not at all. The door is wide open so there's plenty of air circulation. The straw also allows for nice air flow.
@ thanks, I’ve a need to build one. I’m not in a harsh winter environment. The lowest temps here are around 35 degrees and that’s unusual. I don’t know that I need the foil. Your thoughts?
Should there be 2 entrance to the shelter?
If they were out in the woods they probably should. These are on our porch and are quite safe. The awning also makes it hard for larger animals to try to get in the shelter. Thanks for your suggestion.
Can you use insulation board for the outer box?
If you are talking about insulating between the inner and outer boxes I think there would be enough room for that. There probably won't be enough room to insulate between the top of the inner and outer boxes. I only had enough room for a thin covering of straw on the top.
Great project , do they not need a little more ventilation?
My cat has an issue with the reflective bubble wrap
Sorry to hear that, @Saint696Anger. I hope you find something you can use.
Comment font les chats pour rentrer dans une si petite porte😢
They can easily get in through the door. Here's a video of a very large possum going into one of the shelters. He is bigger than any of the cats that come around here. ruclips.net/video/RCWC-VwYBWE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Is there an alternative to straw? I'm deadly allergic.
Finding the inside tube to fit in the outside tube is the hardest…
You are right about that. Good luck.
Seriously, you can put up a homemade sign saying, "John's Feral Shelter." IT WOULD BE SOOOO CUTE.

Don't sterilite brand crack easy in the cold?
Thanks for the question. Mine are 2 years old and I live in an area where it gets 15 degrees or more below zero in the winter. So far mine haven't cracked.
I can see you making those for a feral cats but why possums or raccoons? Haven't they always survived out in the wilderness and the cold ?
@@Fixitforgetitcan a heating pad be used with straw? Thank you for the tip to not add material and how it will freeze. I had no idea
What size entrance that will let cats in but keep racoons out?
Hi, Migrose. I believe the door size on this shelter is 5" wide by 5 1/2" tall. I thought that would be a bit small for raccoons but we have seen raccoons go into some of these shelters without a problem. I think the only safe way to handle that concern is to make a shelter with two doors. You can see how I modified one of these shelters so it has two doors here ruclips.net/video/7yis_HJBTdo/видео.htmlfeature=shared

Hi, imakeituptoyou. I would think it is.
I made houses like this. Feral cat will not go in them. Why the are scared to be trapped
