The drama behind Tarja leaving makes for interesting reading, but I wouldn't get too bogged down with trying to figure out the "truth". It was over a decade ago and pretty much everyone involved has said they've moved on and are happy doing what they're doing now. The only people still obsessed with the incident are some extreme fans who have their own interpretation of the facts and still get mad if someone posts a disagreeing opinion. Personally I think every singer has had an important part in making Nightwish what it is today and it's perfectly okay to like more than one of them. Anette gets a lot of hate, but even though her vocal style is not quite to my taste I still think she was good for the band and helped them explore different types of sounds than what they'd done before.

Agreed. For a view from one of the band, there is documentation in Marko's book, Stainless. But I wouldn't recommend it firsthand, ([edit: I would recommend it as a firsthand account is what I meant to type before predictive text took a typing error and completely changed my meaning]) it's an interesting insight into Marko.

You forget that Tuomas' music wouldn't exist that way without that "drama" as media named it. There was a time when Tuomas needs to have utterly adored Tarja, so all those emotions from an unrequited love theme were able to evaporate to the surface through his songs. Without Tarja Tuomas' "Ghost Love Score" era music would probably never came into existence. The good thing about it is that things turned into a happy end. Tarja got a man more manly than that shy, introvert dreamer, she felt sympathy but not love for. After burying his emotions in songs like "Poet & Pendulum" Tuomas found his luck in classic singer Johanna Kurkela who loves Tuomas as what he is and in Floor Jansen who made Nightwish to what it is today.

It's an open letter available on RUclips, she was a diva, just read the letter yourselves. The whole band signed it with Marco even saying "Either she goes or I go"...... The people spreading drama are the Tarja fans who just can't believe she could possibly be less than perfect & they really should stop with their delusional storytelling!!!! @@TheThamesmen As a man, just watch that footage from 1996-2005 and tell me that Tuomas wasn't attracted by Tarja in one kind or another: ruclips.net/video/z2FwdgZqhyg/видео.html .Consider that Tuomas met Tarja at school and it was him who invited her to sing in his band.
Quotes from Ghost Love score: "We used to swim the same moonlit waters...a siren from the sea came to me...forgive the adoring beast". Tuomas wouldn't be the first poet who developed feelings to his muse. Or "I wish I wouldn't feel for you anymore" (Dead Boy's Poem). If you listen carefully to the lyrics there are far more songs where he was sending messages through his lyrics at that time.
From 2000 on, Tarja started to date Marcelo, a blowhard, roughneck worshipper, rather the opposite of what Tuomas is representing. Through Marcelo's influence Tarja eventually began to separate herself from the band.
In 2003 Tuomas learned about Floor Jansen, when her band "After Forever" acted as Nightwish' support band on tour. To Tuomas disadvantage their two singers started "socializing" (became friends) for obvious reasons. So when Nightwish were releasing their employment ad for the new singer in 2006, Floor did not apply, unlike many other like e.g. Elize Ryd from Amaranthe/Kamelot, who openly admitted that she would have loved to be become the next singer. Things changed when Floor's primal band "After Forever" which she joined by the age of 16, suddenly disbanded in 2009, after loosing its record contract. Watch how Nightwish still kept in contact with her favorite singer: ruclips.net/video/hHtJsiLAkM4/видео.html !!
So it's no surprise for me that Nightwish became less benign when Anette was calling for a hiatus due to a maternity break. Instead the band told her that they intend to continue the tour with a replacement. The story escalated quickly when Anette was told that they want to ask Floor Jansen: "Why her of all people?"...somehow Anette seemed to know that she couldn't hit the stage anymore, after Floor did her job. So their argument was short and severe.
There's a documentation about those days on RUclips called: "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours".

Keep in mind that Floor wasn't hired as soon as they fired Tarja (pronounced Tarya ). After Tarja left the band, they hired Anette and she was with the band for several years. It has been said that Tuomas had wanted to hire Floor right away but she had her own band at the time and he didn't want to mess that up for her - and the rest is history. And about the romantic thing - Tuomas and Tarja were good friends for many years but not romantically involved (according to Tuomas, anyway).

@@TheThamesmen To elaborate a bit on Johns statements, they also didn't hire Anette right away. Tuomas wrote the whole "Dark Passion Play" album without a specific singer in mind. In fact there is a demo version around where all songs are sung by Marco. When Anette was hired, as a mezzo soprano she couldn't go as high as Tarja so some songs had to be changed a bit to accomodate her voice. I suspect some were restored to the original when Floor came along (like Poet and the Pendulum).

When Floor performed the Poet she simply replaced the choirboy for the one section but Tuomas wanted the choirboy retained in the first section and it makes sense to me as the purity of the sound is something that a choirboy has exclusivity to now we no longer castrate men :D the Tarja era songs though for sure were changed and even now I think some remain changed as a lot of the old songs were in a different key. You can here it if you play a Tarja version and Floor version back to back and it does make sense as Floor (backed by Tuomas) prefers to belt and it would be impossible to belt the really high notes (she talks about how difficult Everdream is for her) I like these discussions as I always find out little bits of info and learning more is interesting.

Great reaction again! What stands out to me most with this is Marco's crazy singing and it's a shame that he recently decided to leave the band. This was the same show as High Hopes but there was no issues for them performing together on stage. As for the reasons of the band sacking her, it was more about Tarja and her husband focusing more on money, her coming solo career (she already did plan to leave after one more album) , etc. According to the band that is. The romantic feeling part is more some fan speculation and nothing I'd put much stock in, especially since the entire band were behind the firing.
Tuomas did go through a depression from all the backlash and issues that came from firing Tarja and he did put all of that into a song called The Poet and the Pendulum. A song in which he kills himself instead of doing it in real life, as he has put it (although he's also said that he was never actually thinking of physically harming himself). It's absolutely one of Nightwish's best songs in my view and certainly very emotional. A song that's worth reading up a bit more on beforehand, and watching version of the Wembley show performance that includes lyrics, if you decide to get onto that one down the line.

Hi guys, great reaction as always. This was recorded in Helsinki in 2005. At the end of this concert Nightwish handed Tarja a letter informing her that she was being fired from the band. They also published it on their website for all to see at the same time. The DVD of this concert was appropriately entitled End Of An Era. The letter as well as Tarja's response and her husband Marcela's response are all online and available to view. They are essential reading before reacting to The Poet And The Pendulum as well as watching an interview with Tuomas were he talks about the meaning behind that song. He actually commits suicide in the song. There is a line in the spoken part of the song which says "now I only have 3 minutes and counting" and exactly 3 minutes later Tuomas commits the suicide! Worth remembering this when you get around to reacting to it and check the time stamps in the video at the appropriate moments. Stay safe 🤘✌

I haven't listened to the whole "Dark Passion Play" album (I know, shame on me! But in my defense I've been spending my free time watching reaction videos, so what can you do🤷‍♂️), but from what I know there are at least three songs related to the breakup on the album: "The Poet and the Pendulum"; "Bye Bye Beautiful"; and "Master Passion Greed" are the ones I know of.
"Master Passion Greed" was a total dig at Tarja's husband, which is why the band has never (and will never) play(ed) it live. From what I understand, the other band members never liked him from when they first met him (which was quite a bit of time before Tarja was romantically involved with him, although I don't know how long or the exact details), so they felt it was a betrayal on her part when she (apparently) suddenly married him without informing them beforehand. Add onto that the apparent urging of him to have Tarja take more time off from the band to perform solo, coupled with him (apparently) urging her to essentially build up her own presence more during shows (at the expense of the other banc nembers and the harmony of the band as a whole), and you can see what set the stage for the band firing her.
Now this is all from the perspective of the other band members; from what I've heard, Tarja replied back to them that she didn't know what they were talking about, and didn't understand why they fired her.
Another item that I've heard is that she and the band had agreed to split up after the end of the tour, but the band preemptively fired her via an open letter after this concert (not sure if this was the planned end of the tour at the time, or if they had other concerts planned that they ended up cancelling and/or scrapping because of this).
I wasn't a fan at the time (and hadn't even heard of them until I got three songs from a buddy back in 2011 - which happened to be "Gethsemanie", "She is My Sin", and "Forever Yours" - first two are some of their best IMO, third is good), but I've heard that a huge amount of Nightwish fans were disgruntled (and a lot stopped listening to the band) not just because of the fact that Tarja was fired, but because they were displeased with the way the band handled it.

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 3 года назад +1

It's also my understanding that there were no actual romantic feelings from Tuomas (the keyboard player who is also the primary composer and main band founder) to Tarja, but that he considered her his muse and kindred spirit in making music (which is where a lot of the early songs came from).
From what I've heard, both "Ghost Love Score" and "Romanticide" (both from the album "Once", released in 2004) were intended as wake-up calls from the band to Tarja, to try to get her to turn back from the "path of no return" and correct her ways so she could stay with the band (none of this is official, but from what I've seen, read, and know of the band this seems far more plausible to me then Tuomas having an unrequited love for Tarja).
Take it for what you will, just thought I would pass along my (admittedly second hand) knowledge of the band.
Thanks for all of your reactions so far! They gave been great!

It's not like he's the only one. Almost everyone tells the reacters to research the song before you react to it, as you won't understand the deeper meanings and purpose of it without that knowledge, which reduces the impact quite a bit.
I can understand why everyone thinks that way, as someone most likely won't catch either the lyrics, nor what's happening to the narrater in the song (i.e., the "Dead Boy" if you will, as I think it's the same person who provided tge voice narrative in bith "Dead Boys Poem" and "Beauty OF the Beast") if you haven't looked into the background and history of the song.
Althiugh it's still a good song without that foreknowledge, most Nightwish fans want to see how the reactirs process the song (hearing/seeing it for the first time) while knowing what it's supposed to be about.
I personally would be interested in watching a reaction of the song going into it blind (i.e., no beforehand knowledge of the song), and then a follow up reaction ( i.e., watch it again) after studying and learning about the song (and then seeing the difference in perspective the reacter has after knowing what the song is about).

Tarja had already informed the band that she wanted to do only one more album and one more tour, and then she was out. The rest of the band already considered her husband's omnipresence and influence toxic, and decided to go ahead and end it because they weren't interested in continuing under those circumstances. She was replaced by Swedish singer Anette Olzon, who I hope you guys can react to soon. There isn't much high quality live stuff of her available of her on RUclips, but the official video of "Amaranth" is a great place to start, followed by the official video of "Bye Bye Beautiful".

"Storytime" official video with Annette is also good, as is "The Islander" official video. A really unique song with Annette is "Slow Love Slow", which was designed for her as she had experience with jazz music.
And for a comparison (not to see who is better, but just to see both similarities and contrasts between the singers), I would recommend listening to the studio (album) version of "Song of Myself" as sung by Annette. I had already listened many times (and fallen in love with) the Wacken 2013 version of it before I heard the original, and I was amazed at how good Annette's version was (especially compared to Floor - not saying she was better than Floor, but I felt that the way she sang it was about on par with Floor's version, which shocked me)!

Welcome to the first era of Nightwish! 😁 Tarja, the woman you just heard, is the first vocalist and one of the founding members of the group, who was born in 1996. Of the band's 9 studio albums, 5 were recorded with her, 2 with Anette and 2 with Floor, the current singer. Most of the songs people suggest in Floor's voice were not originally recorded by her, so it would be nice if in addition to the newer versions you also heard the originals. Each song sounds completely different depending on who is singing. The band also went through other member changes. Drummer Jukka was replaced by Kai and bassist Sami was replaced by Marko, the man singing in this video. In turn, Marko recently announced his departure and, so far, Nightwish has a temporary bass player.Tarja left the band in 2005, before RUclips existed. Most of the live performances from her time were posted by fans. This video you just watched is from the DVD "End of an era". This entire DVD is incredible. A curiosity about this show is that Tarja hardly did it. She was sick that day and recorded this show on medication. You can usually find good videos with Tarja on the "Nightwish Arena" channel. As for Anette, I advise you to always listen to the studio versions of her. Live videos are not usually very good with Anette, but she has a beautiful voice. Floor joined Nightwish in 2012 as a temporary member and became permanent in 2013. It is easy to find good live performances with her. Many of these videos were posted by the band itself. In general the Nightwish live performances are magical, but the studio versions are also excellent. In addition, there are some iconic songs that you will not find live version or, when you do, the quality of the recording is terrible. An example of this is "Beauty of the beast". This is a song from Nightwish's fourth album, "Century Child". So far only Tarja has sung it. There is a live version, but the quality of the existing videos is very bad, even in the remastered ones. This can ruin your experience. Because of that, I strongly suggest the studio version. If you like to enjoy the lyrics of the songs, "Beauty of the beast" has a romantic gothic style. Nightwish had a different style in Tarja's time. Originally the band was a mix of Gothic metal, power metal, symphonic music and folk music. From Anette on, the influences of power metal and gothic metal are almost nonexistent. It is important not to confuse "Beauty OF the beast" with "Beauty AND the beast". Nightwish has these two songs. In case you want to know, there is a good live version of "Beauty AND the beast" recorded on the dvd "From wishes to eternity". This is the band's first DVD. It was recorded in 2000 and released in 2001, before Marko joined the group. It is a much simpler DVD than the ones Nightwish makes today, but it is excellent. At the beginning of their career the band did not have many financial or technical resources. This is a 20-year-old recording. At the time the group was on their third album, "Wishmaster", and they had done their first world tour. Tarja has a solo career with many iconic performances and partnerships. I would like to suggest "Victim of ritual", a live performance recorded at Woodstock in 2016. If you prefer something quieter, I suggest the song "The Living End", a live performance recorded in a church in Wacken. In this performance, Tarja is accompanied only by a piano, a violin and a cello. It's beautiful. There is a video of this performance on Wacken TV channel. It's a video with 6 songs, but in the description there is their name for you to click and be taken to the one you want. Thank you!

I think most of the people already told you everything about Tarja departure from the band. Maybe you want to read the opening letter that the band wrote to her and also her response. After that you just need to react to "The poet and the pendulum", the song where Thomas commited suicide to avoid do it in real life. He was inspired by the poem "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe.

Tarja, Annette then Floor came in mid tour 2012 in Denver. That was six months prior to the 2013 Wacken show. Also check out Floor with Dutch vocalist Henk Poort doing Phantom. Find it on the show Besteszangers. I think that's how it's spelled.

Correction, Floor joined AFTER the Salt Lake City, Utah show (which was Annette's last show with the band, approximately 28 Sep 2012) which is where she joined the band and traveled with them by bus to the Seattle, Washington show two days after she arrived in SLC (hence the documentary "Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours").
Denver was the show that Annette missed due to illness, and the band informed the crowd asking if they would rather have the show canceled, or if they wanted the band to play the concert without Annette (which the crowd almost unanimously wanted). The band had the singers from the band "Kamelot" (who was their opening act during this part of the tour) help out with singing the songs, with Marko singing some by himself that would have normally been sung by Annette.
Annette returned to the lineup a couple of days later for the SLC show (which apparently she wasn't 100% healthy for; I've heard that it was partially due to flu, and partially due to pregnancy, but the only thing I know is that she wasn't looking particularly healthy around this time of the tour...at least, not to me). The band ended up firing her right after the SLC show ended (flashbacks of 2005, anyone?)
I heard there were issues leading up to this (friction happening before she got sick and hospitalized in Denver with fever and flu-like symptoms), but I don't know the details.
Interesting fact: when Tuomas called Floor to have her join the band for the rest of the tour, she apparently was at a wedding, and so didn't get the message right away; when she found out, she rushed to get on a flight to SLC, and as they say, the rest is history!

I know I might get flamed for this comment, but I didn't like the Beste Zangers version as much as Nightwish's version.
Floor did an excellent job with her part, but I think that it didn't quite match up to Tarja's (I give Floor an A- or A to Tarja's A+). Although Floor is an amazing singer and has unmatched versatility, on the purely classical or operatic songs I feel she's just that bit behind a pure specialist like Tarja.
And even though he tried to copy Marko, Henk Poort is no Marko Hietala. He did a better job than any contemporary opera singer (although I'm about 95% sure that was due to Floor coaching him up on how Marko sang his parts with Nightwish), but there's no way he could come close to the passion, energy, and personality Marko put into his rendition(s) back in 2004 and 2005. I give him props for going outside his comfort zone (and the traditional portrayal of the Phantom), but at best it's a B to Marko's A+.
No disrespect intended for Floor, as there are also quite lot of songs that Tarja can't quite match up to Floor (particularly anything with contemporary rock or pop sounds).

Annette had quite a few really good songs with Nightwish ("Storytime", "Song of Myself", and "Slow Love Slow" are three other fantastic songs not mentioned), but she really struggled with live performances. I haven't seen enough to guess what the actual issues are, but what I have seen she seems to have problems with her breath control (particularly farther into the concert). It could be illness, physical fitness, poor technique, mental, emotional, or a plethora of other possible causes or combinations thereof.
Whatever the reason, she was a great studio artist who struggled at long concerts.

"The Islander" official video is well worth the watch (even if not for a reaction) just due to the emotional impact from the visuals (song spoiler alert ahead):
Especially when you understand that the song is about an old sailor/lighthouse operator who is going to commit suicide because his wife and children gave all died vefire him, and he's tired of this life by himself😥 (not sure if there were ever any grandchildren, or if they had also died).
My family has had a few impacts from suicide/suicide attempts, so this song hits very deep.

She told her story, they told there's but the truth I think is somewhere in the middle. I remember being a devasted angst ridden teen over this 😂
She was accused of diva like antics, but it also seems that maybe they weren't accomodating for her needs and requests - but that was so long ago and I'm sure they've all moved in. In fact Marko and Tarja had a sort of reunion in stage a few years ago which was sweet, and in fact Tarja and Floor are good friends.

Great as always chaps, yeah that performance was from the same concert as High Hopes so her final gig. One aspect from the situation was that Tarja (most often pronounced "Tar'ya")had said to the band that she would record one more album with them then go solo, which ofc the band were not happy with. And they fired her via "open letter", which meant the world found out the same time she did basically, she also responded with an open letter which is worth reading too. But yeah Floor is the 3rd singer, Anette Olson is the singer between Tarja and Floor. But yeah focus on the music chaps, the whole Tarja / Anette / Floor debate can bog you down and the chat can get toxic over it, but I view all three as having their place in Nightwish history, but for me personally after 21 years listening to them and going to their concerts, they struck gold with Floor.

Well done Thamesmen. Well done. This was the last stop on a tour which they typically end in Finland. This last stop was unique for a couple of reasons. They chose to film a DVD/CD from this concert as well as this being Tarja's final performance. Of course, she was unaware when she took the stage this would be her last performance with Nightwish. The rest of the band knew and you can catch glimpses of the emotions on their faces throughout, particularly Tuomas. Jukka reportedly had a migraine headache. You can see him here and in High Hopes slumping over his drum kit at times.
As an OG Nightwish fan, watching this DVD brings back fond memories. We loved the operatic Tarja next to distorted/melodic Metal. And our hearts were heavy when we read the "open letter" that she was officially gone. A few more years of turmoil and drama until we arrived at Ms. Floor Jansen. And now we live in a state of pure bliss. She immediately transformed them and there was an energy and vitality that was missing before. Nightwish started smiling at one another. The camaraderie was apparent. Floor's powers of seduction are real.

This song and 'High Hopes' are from the same gig (2005), and yes, Tarja was fired just after by an open letter.... The backlash put Tuomas, the leader, songwriter and keyboardist into a deep depression, which - luckily for us all - made him create 'The poet and the Pendulum', maybe his greatest work. It was his catharsis, and kept him sane.
The band had a second singer, Anette Olzon, from 2006 to 2012. Almost the direct opposite of Tarja vocally. More poppy, no opera diva. Although perfectly adequate she didn't have the power in her voice to do the big live performances well. The best I've seen her is from the studio recording of 'Scaretale' (2011), check that out. The chemistry in the band seems to have soured over time, and when she got sick on tour in the US in 2012, the had to find a replacement. 'Learn the setlist in 24 hours, Floor'. And so history was made.

Look up "Beste Zangers" with Floor and Henke Poort doing Pantom as well. Same song but still different :)
According to the band, the issue was that Tarja's husband was injecting himself more into the band and Tarja was pushing for that. The band was not interested in that path and Tarja had become less involved--except for the shows. "Master Passion Greed" was written about that, and "Poet and the Pendulum" is about Tuomas's feelings on the breakup and the fans painting him as the "bad guy". Technically, Tarja is an incredible singer, but in the end, Tuomas is the one that puts the music and words into her mouth. My feeling was that she probably got a little diva-ish and the band finally had enough.

well now you have to react to Floor's version of Phantom of the Opera (not with Nightwish, but with Henk Poort, the original Phantom in the Netherlands production). It was during a Dutch TV show, Beste Zangers 2019, and it's to be found here on RUclips. In case you don't anticipate it, she nailed it even better than Tarja did - though some may crucify me for this comment. :)

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 3 года назад +1

I won't crucify you, but I will disagree. I think Floor did an excellent job, but in my opinion not quite as good as the pure operatic voice and singing style of Tarja.
And do you seriously think that Henk Poort's (slightly awkward) mimicking of Marko is actually as good (or even near as good) as what Marko did? I give Mr. Poort props for his attempt (and stepping outside his training/comfort zone), but in no way does he come anywhere close to Marko's sound, style, passion, energy, or personality as the Phantom!
I've said it before, but I'm 95% percent sure Mr. Poort only attempted this particular rendition after Floor coached him up on how Marko sang it. Although some parts sound pretty good, his character (and stage presence) doesn't match up anywhere close to the raw, unbridled touch of madness Marko brought to his version of the Phantom! Mr. Poort's version came across to me as more of a somewhat angry, somewhat stern (and very slightly domineering) distinguished gentleman trying to get somone to do his bidding without losing his composure.
Whereas Marko brought full on somewhat insane villain, domineering and seducing poor young lass into doing anything he wants, and her full on being brainwashed into it (and here I will make another comparison: to me, Tarja played up and that aspect with Stockholm syndrome, whereas Floor was still a genteel lady cooperating with a gentleman to sing a song, but not much of the insane or villainous aspect of the actual characters or reason for what they did).
The Phantom is supposed to be that passionate, charismatic villain who is at least partly insane and good at brainwashing others into following his ideology, even if somewhere deep inside they know it's wrong. I believe the Nightwish rendition fully captured this aspect of the song (and probably far better than any other performance of this song/play than anyone else has ever attempted), while the Beste Zangers version was at most a slightly domineering (but still polite) CEO browbeating his workers into working harder on a project (maybe with unpaid overtime). And that's the difference vetween the two.

both stories have some truth alex, there was speculation that tuomas had feelings for tarja for years and when you read the lyrics of some of the songs it's not beyond the realms of possibility that they were about her. but by far the more likely story was about tarja's husband marcelo, they wrote the angriest song i've ever heard from nightwish called master passion greed about him. he was pushing tarja to demand majority of the profits, convinced her nightwish was nothing without her and that she should go solo, which she was planning to do. so the band took matters into their own hands and unanimously agreed the time had come to part ways with her, even though it was a unanimous decision tuomas recieved all of the hate and flak from fans and media and even the prime minister of finland stepped in to comment on the situation, it drove tuomas into a deep depression fearing he had killed his dream (nightwish) and in that depresssion he wrote his lyrical suicide in poet and the pendulum, to avoid doing it in real life

This was at Hartwall Arena in Finland, their home country and the first time they got to play there, so it was a big deal for the whole band. This was also the night they fired Tarja (Tar-yah) after the show through an open letter. They did a group hug after the show, handed her the letter, and asked her to not open it until the next day. The reason they fired her, that is actually supported by evidence, is that she went diva on them, fueled by her husband's greed and interjecting himself between her and the band. The rumors that Tuomas was in love with her and because she married someone else, so he fired her, is BS. It makes for a great romantic tragedy, but there is no evidence to support this. Tuomas and Tarja went to the same music school and were close friends. He very much loved her in that way, but the decision to fire her was the entire band's and the record label's. Tuomas as leader took responsibility for the firing, as a good leader should, and he received extremely harsh backlash for it. Almost to the point that he was suicidal. Instead of taking his life, he committed suicide in song form in "The Poet and the Pendulum" so that he wouldn't do it for real.

@@TheThamesmen Nobody will know for sure the real story of what happened. It is most likely a bit of both. As far as romantic feelings, again, nobody knows for sure but at this point I think people just want to see that, in reality Tuomas and Tarja were childhood friends, and they started the band together. Having to fire her was a painful choice for him. It doesn't have to be romantic, if you are having to do that to a dear friend, for the sake of the thing you made together.
The truth, however, is that Tarja was planning to leave anyway. This was a known thing, stated by herself to further her solo career, but it was not supposed to be for a couple albums later. However, the tension between her husband/manager and the feeling that she was putting herself before the band as a family is what really drove things to where they were by that point.
As far as Tarja's singing, yes she is a remarkable singer and many prefer her style of singing, however, it was for the most part classical/operatic which gave Nightwish at the time a distinct flavor, but to me it also pigeonholed Tuomas into composing a certain way because that was the style of his singer. Now Tarja did change up her style to a slightly more contemporary sound as the years went on, and you can hear that greatly in the "Once" album which their most popular album with Tarja (according to sales).
She still had that classical/operatic vibe though which to me always formed a disconnect with the feelings and emotions of the music.
Now take Floor. Which she isn't as trained classically as Tarja, she does have that training. She is also a technical vocal professional, in that she is always trying to perfect her techniques. I think, one of the things that makes her fit so well with Nightwish is that she can adapt her style to whatever composition Tuomas would write. He isn't pigeonholed like he was with Tarja or Anette and that really shows in the two albums he has done with Floor and also the way he has changed the older songs to a different style when Floor sings them. It's not that she can't sing like Tarja or Anette but she can do anything, so why not play with that amazing versatility if given the chance?
Edit: Also want to point out the style change because of the addition of Troy to the band which was not there in the earlier albums and adding more Marko's vocals into the songs as well as Troy's.
Anyway, what I am saying is, yes both Tarja and Anette were amazing singers for their time in the band but Floor just adds that extra something that was always missing to this dynamic group of musicians.

Planet Hell, Wishmaster, Sleeping Sun, and Wish I Had An Angel from the same End of an Era concert are much better representations of Tarja's voice from that era of time. However, Tarja's voice and style has shifted and developed a bit since then. She somewhat forced the soprano sound back then when she's more of a mezzo type. She has a rich lower register and she makes use of it in her newer works. Examples of modern Tarja would be her live cover of Muse's Supremacy, and the acoustic live performance of I Walk Alone Live in Milan (From Act II).

    Nightwish's 3 singers:
    1. Tarja (original singer): 1995 to 2005
    2. Annette: 2006 to 2012
    3. Floor (current singer): 2013 to 2020+
everyone knows Floor, she's super popular with everyone, especially right now, and is a really good singer, having a huge variety of singing capability (pop, classical/opera, belting, growling/raspy), able to sing nightwish's old songs that were for Tarja's classical/opera singing, as well as new songs for her own variety/range of singing abilities
Unfortunately for Annette, she's a pop/rock singer, and a very good singer too, but her pop/rock singing just didn't go that well with nightwish's music, which was made for Tarja's dark classical/opera singing. So, usually, she gets left out.
so, it comes down to "Targasm” (Tarja) vs “Floorgasm” (Floor) in terms of the Nightwish singers in who you like most, if you like classical/opera singing better, Tarja is better at it, but that's all she does while with nightwish, as nightwish was created for tarja's unique dark operatic singing/voice, (now with her own band, or solo, she does a greater range of singing), but she does it really well, she's really got a beautiful voice, if you like more pop singing, belting and growling/raspy, with or without classical/opera singing, than you like Floor better
I knew nightwish from the early 2000s, so Nightwish will always be with Tarja, but Nightwish with Floor is really good too, but it's Tarja, who's my favorite singer with nightwish
(many others will help you out with Floor's songs, so I'll just stick to Tarja's songs here)
    ----------
if you do like Tarja with nightwish, here's some good ones:
    (NOT ranked, just listed)
    1. End of an Era (her last concert with nightwish, hard to find good quality and the entire concert, as it gets taken down)
    2. Phantom of the Opera (her duet with Marco, really good, both of them together, this song was actually used in the Phantom of the Opera remake movie in 2004)
    3. Wishmaster
    4. Planet Hell (marco sings in this song as well)
    5. End of All Hope
    6. Dead Boy's Poem
    7. Nemo (watch the official music video and also her live performance of it)
    8. Kinslayer
    9. she is my sin
    10. wish I had an angel
    11. slaying the dreamer
    12. the siren
    13. dead to the world
    14. 10th man down
    15. walking in the air
    and many more too
    ------
Tarja has her own stage performance/presence, but the focus is on the entire band (much more respectful), unlike with floor, where the focus is almost entirely on her, and also, Phantom of the Opera isn't about that much showmanship, so you're not seeing more of Tarja's performance/presence (love how the camera work and Tarja worked together, with her ducking down, seeing Marcus as he delivered his singing, and then Tarja stands back up, seeing her face back in the camera as Marco's part ends and hers begins again, Tarja is really such a team player, as she could have had all the focus upon herself, like Floor gets, but instead she chooses to give the entire band the respect and focus that they too deserve, it's not all about Tarja, like it is with Floor, despite how good Tarja is and thus how she could be the entire focus with nightwish, as is Floor with nightwish)
there's other songs, where Tarja was way way way more stage performance/presence/showmanship, including hair windmills, rocking an invisible guitar along with empuu rocking his guitar, along with her doing her squatting too as she sings and taps her foot/leg to it, as she's swinging those hips too, along with her getting the crowd involved as well too, and etc stuff, you got to watch way more songs, to really see her amazing stage presence/performance and showmanship, as Phantom of the Opera is likely the one song with the least of that stuff, due to the nature of the song itself, being about their singing (contrasting and then cacophonous harmonous duet, nothing can compete with Tarja and Marco voices duet'ing), though Marco and Tarja had a bit of showmanship and fun snuck into it, with Marco pointing to his face and Tarja's facial expression reactions, while both song their parts

About Tarja's resignation, it really was a dramatic episode. The relationship between her and the band had not been good for some years. Because of this, Tarja decided to leave and communicated her decision to the group. Tarja wanted to make her decision public and prepare fans for the change of vocalist, but Tuomas convinced her not to make it public until the recording of a next album after "Once". It turns out that, unlike agreed, the group planned and wrote a letter of resignation to Tarja without her knowing it. At the end of the show "End of an Era", the band delivered the letter to Tarja, with the recommendation that she should not read it at that time. The following day that same letter was published on the band's website. In short, the band accused Tarja of being a diva and also attacked her husband, Marcelo. After the accusations made by the band, Tarja's husband came out in defense of her. He received, answered and made available on the internet more than 140 answers to questions sent by fans from all over the world. By the way, Marcelo talks about Tuomas' unrequited love for Tarja in one of these answers. Tarja also wrote a public letter responding to the group. In it, she did not attack the band. In short she said she was shocked and sad, and said that she did not recognize herself in the description that the band made of her. In this letter Tarja doesn't explain much. She gives more details at a press conference. You can find this interview here on RUclips. Tarja's dismissal was completely unnecessary. She had already told the group, approximately 2,5 years in advance, that she would leave the band. It seems to me that the group tried to punish her for that decision by launching a public letter with attacks on her and her husband. If any differences were unbearable, it would be enough to end the contract in a civilized manner, as any mature person does. Because of the way the things went the band lost a lot of fans. Many of my friends, for example, stopped listening to Nightwish at the time. For me, the letter says more about the band than about Tarja. Nightwish's fan base was reconfigured with the change of style and the entry of Anette and then Floor. Many of the original fans no longer follow the band and neither Tarja, because the style she adopted in her solo career is different. Some former dissident fans returned to listening to Nightwish after Floor joined. Many longtime Nightwish fans know and like Floor since her original band After Forever. The dismissal episode was not the first time that the band acted in a bad manner. For example, Tarja was attacked once, in the middle of a show in Guadalajara, and the band did nothing. At the ocasion, a crazy guy invaded the stage and tried to sexual abuse Tarja, but the band continued playing as if nothing was happening. They also did nothing in the backstage. Tarja was conforted by Marcelo at the time, a person the group just had known. Incidentally, Anette, the second vocalist, was also fired. She was pregnant, fell ill during the tour and had to go to the hospital. At the time, the group decided to replace her with Floor. Here are some sources:

@kivikunnas Not true really Once has surpassed DPP as the most selling album. The band was hyped due to the drama of an End of an Era, but when Imaginaerum came out, it flopped sales-wise because now fans knew how the new singer sounded - even though Imaginaerum was praised 1000x more. The band keeps re-releasing Tarja era records because they know those will bring in the money after they sold themselves o the Saudi-owned Live Nation.

I guess this means that you need to do a song with the second vocalist Anette. She is a pixie pop princess - best songs Amaranth or Scaretale. She was fired because her live performances weren't anywhere near as good as her studio work.

@@TheThamesmen Anette wasn't fired, she left herself. They were on American tour and Anette was very sick. She was early pregnant, and it wasn't public yet. Anette became so sick, she had to go to hospital. The band didn't cancel the concert, they played it, Marco was singing and lady singers from their warming band were singing too, reading the lyrics from the notes. Anette was very angry the show wasn't cancelled and she wasn't so important. She left the band and they had to call Floor to help. I understood Floor was already agreed to substitute Anette during her maternity leave, so she was just asked to start earlier.

To be honest I felt a little bad for Anette during the live shows, all the band members, especially Tuomas would get cringy looks on their faces, but I definitely understood why they were making the faces. When Anette got sick during the tour, Tuomas approached Anette with the idea of a replacement singer for the remainder of the tour, she was fine with it, until Tuomas said yes we want to ask Floor. Anette freaked out and No, not Floor! 😂

@@alleninfinity6730 I guess she would have also freaked out if they just took Elize instead, who had also already auditioned for the position after Tarja, but at that time they thought she was too young.
But seriously, she was not really good (often horrible) live. When i saw the first concert with her at the time on TV i was shocked because she even dragged the whole band down and they sounded as if they all unlearned to play correctly. That was the point i lost interest in them until i heared that Floor joined them.

They did it three times, they kicked Tarja, Anette and the first base player. The way they did it is the problem here. Tarja was leaving soon, but Annete didnt want to leave.

Tarja is the reason why Nightwish went into symphonic metal with THAT female VOICE.She actually was THE voice. Nightwish was meant to be different kind of band but when Tuomas heard Tarja sing the way she did, Nightwish got their sound.Comparing her to Floor is a no go for me.This is not a competition but ofcourse it's the very basic thing to do.Both women stand their ground in music and are actually friends. Also don't read too much into a fanfic about unrequited love. That is actually a fanfic that has existed ages in the Nightwish fandom.Nightwish screw it up BIG TIME with the way they back stabbed and fired Tarja with an open letter back in the day.Everyone in the band knew but her.And it backfired on them. But that is long time ago.History has a lots of twist and turns but Nightwish keeps going, thanks for Tuomas and his talented band mates.

I love your channel!! I am wondering if you would consider Making the music videos larger on the screen so we can really get a good look and a better feel of the presentation? Idk if this is a good idea, but I am curious on how it would look and feel. Of course we want to see your handsome faces and reactions just as they are!! Thanks!!

A Chicken Sausage?!!! As an honorary Thamesman I object in the strongest terms - I believe I might be the one pushing the Cumberland - so many thanks for that!
Loved the reaction as always, it was a great performance but I would like to point you in the direction of a Dutch TV show called 'Beste Zangers' (not a Sausage btw!) where you can hear Floor taking on the same tune to compare and contrast as it were! Btw, didn't get to walk along the Thames today - to hot - around 28 with no wind, apart from my own of course. Look forward to the next one!

A bit of friendly advice, in a lot of European countries, especially Scandinavian, and German speaking countries, "J" in a word is pronounced "Y" so, "Tarja" is pronounced "Tarya".
