    Ha, the one I purchased last Christmas is actually a Thanksgiving cactus using the identifying process you explained. Thank you, good to know!

      Glad it was helpful! Yes, it is so common for them to be sold as Christmas cactus, but I guess what is in a name...😉 as long as we enjoy them.

    The true Christmas cactus is schlumbergera x buckleyi..the crab cactus /Thanksgiving is Schlumbergera truncata..and easter cactus is ripsalidopsi.respect to you growers❤

    I noticed your soil is very dark, do you use regular potting soil or cactus soil. I have cactus soil and it is lighter in color and gets very compact, but doesn't seem to affect the blooming process or the growth of the cactus. Thanks for the great video, you explained the difference between these cacti perfectly!

      I use regular potting soil with sometimes horticultural sand mixed in. Sometimes not. I make my own potting soil when I can and usually do. You are most welcome!

    I own an Easter cactus and it’s gorgeous. The flower is very different.
    I’m unsure if I own a Christmas cactus at all as I am waiting for it to bloom. Most of what I have are Turkey day cactus because that’s what is sold in stores 99.9% of the time.
    I’d gladly trade cuttings with you to make both our collections complete with all three types.

      i have all 3 and they are doing great. my S. truncata (thanksgiving cactus) is about to bloom very soon, and my christmas cactus (S. x buckleyi) is starting to produce buds for the first time from since i got it (i think) last year. Maybe my R./H. gaertneri (easter cactus) will bloom next year.

      They enjoy similar requirements, just the bloom time is different and the Thanksgiving Cactus will typically bloom a couple times of year for me while my Christmas cactus just blooms the one time, though over a long period.

      @@codykutny2532 It loves where you have it. In Brazil, where they are native, they are called May Flowers as that is when they bloom best for them. So it is relative to conditions as well as cultivar.

      Cody Kutny , That’s fantastic. I’d call it a holiday cactus considering how many holidays it has bloomed through. What a great plant.

    I have a Thanksgiving cactus. I had it a year it has not got flowers yet my room don't get good sun it's cool in winter time and hot in summer but it summer she outside but I like it to bloom .... I don't over water it help . What can I do

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 года назад

      Sounds like you are doing a good job. Do you feed it? Unlike what many proclaim they do like a good feed. I feed mine most of the summer just as I do all the other flowers in containers. I use a fish emulsion diluted or seaweed extract. In the summer I water them the same as all my other outdoor containers. But I must note that one of mine this year is not blooming as well as it usually does and it got the same treatment as all the others that are blooming fantastically. Why? I have no idea.
