Spray On Body Filler? High Build Primer, Worth It's Weight In GOLD

  • You ever heard of high build primer? If you haven't or if you've never used it, you best pay attention to this video. High build primer is basically body filler you spray on with a HVLP paint gun. When you open the can it has the consistency of extremely thick paint. A proper paint gun is required with a large painting tip to allow the thicker product to flow from the gun.
I'm at the point in my 1955 Chevy Nomad build, where adding a little primer will help me with motivation and in seeing body lines a little better. This primer laid down great and absolutely changed the look and attitude of this wicked hotrod.
    What do ya think?

Dan: Been mixing automotive paint for over 30 ys (Dupont and PPG). My paint chips go back to the 1940's (have current formulas for most tri-five colors). I also have a paint camera and can scan a chip to generate a formula. Anything I can do give me a yell! We're here for you buddy!😁

Hey Dan... short guy tip that helps tall guys reach the roof too. By an 8' long 2x10 and two short folding step ladders. Put the 2x10 between them, and you can walk the length of the roof with enough height to reach the center and not drag the hose or sleeves in the material. When you're done, stand the board against the wall, and fold the step ladders next to it. Minimal space taken up.
That thing looks FREAKIN AMAZING getting to be one color.

Great job spraying now when it comes to sanding that product is amazing. PLACES YOU DID NOT LIKE AFTER SANDING JUST GO BACK AND BLOW A LITTLE OVER IT JUST LIKE USING PUTTY, ONLY BETTER ON BLOCK SANDING IT STAYS LEVEL AND DOES NOT DRY OUT AND SHRINK.

It's really coming along. A couple tips for you: Toss that little filter from inside your primer gun, get some of the cone shaped paint strainers and filter it when you pour from your mixing cup into the gun. Also, a roll of plastic masking film makes life easier when you want to spray part of the car. Reverse tape the edges, pull the sheet over the whole car, and trim off the area you want to paint. It's quick, cheap, and keeps the overspray off of everything you don't want painted.

Don't know if you have changed your encoding software's settings but you only came third in the lip synch contest, audio about half a second out from video. Otherwise keep up with the sanding and get a good paint finish, it's all in the prep!

When I done my 72 nova I had never done body work before & had the body men & painters tell me how to do it & it took me 3 months of working the primer coats. I thought usinng rattle can black paint to dust it sounded crazy but once I stared sanding I realized it showed the low & high points of the metal surface & after sanding & 4 coats of primer it turned out smooth as glass !

Couple Quick tips from a painting pro. (You probably know them.) The last thing you do before spraying is tac rag the surface. (Lots of possible products) gets rid of the dust and helps the product stick. Painting is all about FLOW. Runs = too much flow...Move faster use less reducer, back up. Orange peel = too little flow...slow down, increase overlap, add more reducer, move a little closer. NICE work!

Worth mentioning to your viewers that the Polyester High-builds tend to have a short pot-life. So don't mix too much and don't farf around too long setting up the gun and spraying it on the car or it will harden in the gun. Ask me how I learned this.

      @@snake_eyes_garage
Mike is 💯 % correct. The activators in 2 pack paint contain Isocyanates. When breathed in they cause cancer ♋️. An air fed respirator is an absolute must have & the air source needs to be separate from the air being supplied to the spray gun. I spent my entire adult life as a panel beater and paint refinisher ( am now retired - 70 years old) in the U.K.. I spent almost three months in hospital when 2 pack first came out from using it without an air fed respirator mask. It had literally glued itself to my lung tissue. Back then labelling of the product’s harmful content was really poor and we weren’t made aware of the danger ⚠️ from using it. Used without adequate protection can lead to serious health issues. As serious as breathing in asbestos, coal dust, to name just a couple.

Like you, I left the little filter in the bottom of the cup in when spraying high build. And concluded that wasn't a good idea. Filter going into the cup and leave that out until you spray color, which is a lot thinner. I didn't get any runs, but don't worry about them. Let the primer cure for at least a day before sanding and they'll sand out fine. Hopefully the primer showed you that you didn't need a 220 surface before priming, in fact it may hurt adhesion.
Like you said, high build is basically polyester gelcoat (thinned resin) mixed with baby powder. The urethane is the really nasty stuff with the isocyanates. The baby powder isn't good for breathing either, though.

If your gonna use hi build primer to cover scratches that you want to skip sanding out as your Savior. Your gonna have sand scratch swelling later down to road that’s gonna show up in your paint job. Taking time to do your sanding before you use the scathing fill primer will give you a better lasting paint job.
