Yep me too. The minute he said it , I thought to myself Ive been aiming like a 500yard rifle shot, when I should be acquiring the X like it's a clay target and Im skeet shooting .
Thanks so much for your videos. I watched everything about target panic and I’ve struggled with it for over a decade. I think your dad’s tip helped me the best and I think about it every time i draw back now. I’m in control and I’ll fire when I am ready. All of your other tips work too. I may never beat target panic but I’m more confident than I’ve been since I was a kid. Thanks
"Accept the movement" and breathing is probably the best advice I took. For years, I was ok shooting, but I learned how to accept the movement and breathe my groups shrank a lot.
Thank you Mr. Morgan 🙏 these target panic drills are by far the most helpful in my case, and it has truly been extremely beneficial in my overall shot progression, and confidence. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for posting 🙏🙏🏹🏹👍👍
Your description of the heavy bow and getting locked outside of the center are dead nuts. This made me quit archery after about 7 years of shooting. 12 years later I’m ready to try it again. These videos are absolute gold. Can’t wait to see where I can go from here. Thank you for the effort you put into these videos!
Great video Levi! Something I see in so many archers and bowhunters as well is acquiring the target as you described. Most people start holding off of the target because they simply never are taught the way you describe it. Just another tidbit of info for those that may struggle with the execution when using this aiming technique, I see it often with people that have releases with trigger travel that they will feel that movement and force the release to go off. If having movement in the trigger gives you the anxiety, do the exact opposite and eliminate all trigger travel and just build the trigger tension in the release. Both methods work, you just have to try them both and see what works best! Great video Levi!
Absolutey spot on ! Have been shooting compound for some years, & after trying all the offered well meaning TP cures, have beaten TP with a cold set hinge with these same procedures. This advice agrees with my theories on overcoming the dreaded anxiety. Nice one, Levi !
Just want to say thank you for helping me out on my pin movement. I added more weight to my back bar and damn, I’m so much steadier. Groups are tighter than ever. Thanks
Boy have you helped me with my shooting!! Seems like thanks isn’t enough. I am seventy three. Still learning. Deer hunting in about three weeks. Thanks again.
I just got a Truball Sweet Spot Pro hinge release and I am solely practicing at 3 yards right now. I am concentrating on the smallest of points on the bag to focus on shot execution. This seems to help with me anticipating the shot or panicking. Looking forward to more videos.
I always thought my VXR was too heavy because I would always feel like it was weighted down below my target but I find this video and it explains my target panic to a tee! Thank you for this video because I always thought I was the only one with this problem.
I suffered from target panic much of my life. Along came the clicker and cured me for tournament archery. My hunting bow was still an issue with no clicker. I came across a Carter Like Mike trigger release. Setting it so my trigger is in my second groove of my index finger kept me from punching the trigger. It won’t go off until my back muscles come together forcing me to pull through the shot setting off the trigger. I’ve seen most trigger shooters with the tip of their index finger on the trigger under a great amount of tension. There are two kinds of archers. Those with no target panic and those that about to. Thanks for addressing this common fault!
Man this video & the last one, THANK YOU! No one described it like you did, I felt like I was playing a video game with the sniper & just wait... wait.... wait.... NOW!! (Terrible shot half the time), makes sighting in a bow as a noob a fing nightmare. I'm just in awe of how hard it is mentally to pull the dot on the target, I can move the dot anywhere smooth but the second it get's next to the target I release half the time. Been drawing a line around the bottom edge of my deer lung target. Cheers for the help
After leaving archery for over 3 decades because of severe TP, I was fortunate enough to discover the tension release. Like Mr. Osborne stated the set hinge worked for him, the tension release worked for me. I never thought I'd ever get to shoot again. Your suggestion of adding movement into the release, adding a spring, or what ever else, these all add the element of not knowing exactly when the release is going to.....well release! Adding this uncertainty leaves me with no other option than to keep the pin on the dot until it decides to go off. When I first started with the tension release, I DID try (unconsciously) to make the release break, but never could (believe me, I really fought that thing). After a bunch of arrows, my body/mind battle finally just gave up and I quit trying to force it. One thing I did do, early on was, at full draw, to slowly release breath using a bit of a hisssing sound. I did this as a means to "connect" my hissing with the increase in back tension, until the release broke. In this initial stage, I was only concentrating on the draw, hold, increase back tension, break mechanism. I was not concerned with any accuracy, save just hitting the butt! Before long, I gave up the breathing/hissing component, and now I draw, set the pin immediately, and I swear the increasing back tension begins as soon as the pin gets on, and as Levi said, within 4-8 sec. is when the release breaks, and I don't know exactly when this will occur. In fact I no longer even pay attention to the release break, I just know it is coming. Believe it or not, I use my tension release hunting as well! Last year, a buck walked out in front of me while I was in my tree stand. Just as I drew back, he turned directly away from me. Well, you might think that having to wait for him to turn would really throw off my 4-8 second window. But nope, I just pressed down on the "brake" thumb lever to "freeze" the release from going off, and I just kept the pin on the buck. Finally, after some time, the buck finally turned, I settled the pin on his heart, started increasing my back tension and because I HAD to keep the pin on target because I don't know when the release will break, the arrow went exactly where the pin was when if finally did! I know this is long winded, but if anyone reading this is suffering as I did for so long, this is what worked for me, and if it lets someone else get back into, and love shooting their bow as much as me, this was worth it. Good luck to you all!
The best cure I found out was not too emphasize aiming. My mind stays of the back end of the shot till it breaks. Terry Wunderle teachings helped me tremendously.
That is exactly what I've been dealing with. I couldn't raise my bow and I'd get all nervous when my pin was in the middle. So I would wank the trigger so bad that sometimes I would miss the whole target. I have helped myself from watching John Duddley and working on some flaws in my form. I feel more comfortable in the middle now and it helps, but I'm going to try your techniques to really get my target panic under control. It's good to know I'm not the only one dealing with this. Whenever I try to explain it to someone they look at me like I'm crazy. Thank you for your videos about this.
learn to breathe ! , even as a martial artist breathing IT IS first and foremost , everything ! . i suggest everyone take a QI-GONG course for at least 6 months , then start taking the very mellow form of TAI-CHI . imagine how hard it was for archers to learn how to shoot without our modern sights we have now , OMG !!!!!! breathing is the most important thing to the body ,second being water ,so take a breath ,stay hydrated because there is oxygen in water also lol ! AWESOME SERIES AND ADVIVE LEVI , THANKS BRO !
I've been doing this drill + blind bale for 2 weeks and it's WORKING. I've had target panic pretty bad for a few years and have half assed these drills in the past. Put in the reps and no cheating! I would always lock low 100lb bow like Levi mentioned. I could always hold center with my finger off the trigger so that had to be slowly introduced with this drill but is no problem now. Shooting without aiming and aiming without shooting is working. I did CHEAT and combined the two today and wow
I thought I was weird because when I lift to the target I freeze just below the spot and I can’t lift the bow so I have to reset. Great vid mate, I’m subscribed for more.
Man I’m glad you’re doing this. I plan on getting Turner’s Shot IQ next month. Have been working on my shot for a while. I have/had the complete collapse TP but worked that out to now just freezing below.....I will beat this!
Ballistic Sam it will happen! Just trust the process and work through it. I locked above for literally years when I was a teenager. Could not move my pin if you held a gun to my head. But 100s of arrows of just holding on a dot without my finger on the trigger led to me being able to do the same but with my finger on the trigger which led to hundreds of complete and correct releases at 5 yards with my eyes closed. Like Levi said, it never goes away and every good archer deals with it but you will eventually learn how to deal with it. Just takes time, I don’t know anyway around that. Keep at it, the light is at the end of the tunnel!
These videos are super helpful. My shooting was helped with the “embrace the movement” video. I can see this helping out a ton too. Thanks Levi and company for these great videos.
For a long time I thought I was just bad at shooting my bow, then my brother told me that I have target panic and I never realized there was so many that struggle with it. I’m a nervous wreck when shooting my bow. Especially around other people. It sucks.
I deal with this every year. One thing that helps is to go out to 20 yards, draw your bow and just hold. Do not shoot an arrow, put your finger behind the trigger and just hold then let down. Focus on aiming
Good stuff. I have a point to bring up. On a target I drift, take too long, a lot of the things you mention. On the other hand, when I'm hunting and finally the moment comes, I find myself up, drawn, centered on the scope and level, on target, steady as a rock, in what seems milliseconds. Actually telling myself, "your perfect, shoot, what are you waiting for?" and they hit exactly where I was aiming. I think it's because your mind is occupied for that moment to the max and you don't think too much about every single step, it just happens and done. As you were saying, up on center, begin the release.
Fantastic video👍 I am curious though, some of the archers i know don't go with the flow when attaching fletchings to encourage the arrow to spin in it's preferred direction. They do right helical regardless and comment that encouraging the spin creates issues, primarily arrow heads might spin off. Is that right, or are they off in their reasoning?
Wow! This is by far my greatest obstacle in shooting a bow. I thought I was the only one that would slowly move toward point of aim and then have the pin get stuck on the left side of the dot. The closer I get to the dot the more the bow seems to weigh. And then when the pin crosses the middle just ripping that release to try and time the shot. Very poor fundamentals. Looking forward to getting better!
I seem to be able to acquire the target pretty good when i draw back and accepting the movement helped. When i move my finger to the trigger is when things fall apart, the anticipation of the release and forgetting the aim. Going to work on the drill and breathing and expect that can help a lot with the mental game.
Good tips. Worth pointing out that no archer, no matter how good, hits 100% dead center of the bullseye every single time. Watch some competitions. They might have good or even great shots. But nobody's perfect. Don't put unrealistic expectations on yourself.
It’s funny I was using that drill but with a blank bail and my line of thinking was just that reminding myself that I can touch that thumb peg trigger and not just hammer. I’ll have to add a dot to aim at with the drill
Funny.. I’ve always considered movement in a release (index and thumb button) to cause more anticipation of the shot. For me, I want a crisp release set heavy that I can pull through and execute a good shot. Hard to discredit something that Levi Morgan says tho! Great videos!
Just a good example of how peoples minds operate differently. For me, a light trigger with no travel, is all but unusable for me, after a few misfires, ill suddenly find myself unable to even touch the trigger, but crank up the spring, and five it a few mm travel, and I'm back to just having aiming troubles like what Levi described. I feel that's more manageable than not being able to execute a shot.
I just went and shot a outdoor course and it was a lot diff than the back yard. And i kinda new I was doing this in tye back yard but it really showed up there, I shot horrible and no matter what I just get stuck low and I try to swoop it up and fire. And it sucks because you no your doing it but can’t help it, so now that I no this is a thing and it’s not just me that this has happened to. I feel a little better, but I need to work on just getting the pin center immediately, not start out low. And if that doesn’t work I’m going to have to just pull back and aim and let down, and try to completely reset.
I have been asking for some one to make a long trigger travel release for years!...I hate zero travel releases! Now someone will make it cause you said it hahahhaha..that's a good thing
I believe my problem is my bows minimum DL is 27" and I am 26"ish at best. The extra effort/strain of pulling back is creating "extra" unwanted movement which adds to target panic, trying to get the shot off. The other problem is I am target shooting. I could easily hit the "deer zone" but when self competing/defeating you are always looking for the perfect shot to achieve the elusive spider/10.
I did this in the Marines. Up downs. Up on target. Locked. Down. When my friend finally got to take me hunting he finally understood me. Can I see the deer? Not really. Lol But when I did I shot it so fast he fell over. Haha. That came from my up downs. Levi. When you do this how long should it be in the middle for archery practice? Like 3 seconds. Or as long as I can? Thanks. Also what is this spring pull stuff. I'm new to the bow.
Great video. But what if you're floating your pin over your intended target, you're aiming and aiming and you get that "surprise" fire, that may be the second your pin has floated over an inch.
At 60 yards I just can’t keep it on target. At 80 everything has to be perfect to make it in an 8 inch circle. Western shooter. I don’t hunt much but it’s an SR6.
So I have dealt with what you describe and it is always good while practicing but when I’m in a stressed situation it appears two fold. I usually draw above the target or spot and come to my click and then put my pin or dot on the spot I’m shooting. Will have to try acquiring the spot then coming to click and then aiming to see how that helps.
So for someone who has only shot a trigger style release and wants to try something new what would you recommend? You said need to have something with more movement?
Here is the problem I have. Its not sitting in the middle or punching. I can practice in my basement 30-35 feet go thru my shot cycle and everything goes perfect. Even set a clicker as part of my cycle to make sure im where im supposed to be. Go outside set up 20 to 60 yard targets and no matter which one im shooting at I get hung up. Cant seem to find my point to relax my release hand. Go back inside and shoot perfect. What can I do?
There was a period of time I thought my only option was to accept locking up below the target. I got so frustrated I ended up moving my pins to compensate and just aimed 3” low. Took a few years but I ended up using a nock on silverback back tension and Scott long horn hinge release to re-teach myself how to execute a shot.
Anyone have any tips for a good back tension release? I have never used one but I’m looking to buy one for spot shooting. Not sure really sure where to start.
I have a problem of freezing at 6:00 on the 9 ring or yellow. I tried everything to hold it in the middle no luck freeze at the bottom of the yellow. So instead of fighting with myself I just set my tape to 26 yards let it set at 6:00 on the yellow result 10 or just out for a nine. Are you ok with this or should I not be doing this?. Thank you
I don't want to sound snobbish or anything, but he totally lost me at "fire". Come on, man, there's no fire involved. You fire a pistol. With a bow and arrow, you "shoot" or "loose".
Sorry, but you're way too picky. Whether you consider it correct or not, the term "fire" for a release aid is often used in archery terminology - in fact, a company has named its release aid "Tru-FIRE". Also, a quick search will find even Wikipedia using the term "fire" to describe the release of an arrow from a bow. Finally, I'm sure you know what term is used to describe releasing a drawn bowstring without an arrow? A dry-"FIRE".
Great video, I thought I was the only one that couldn't get my pin up to the target. Your analogy of the bow weighing a hundred pounds is spot on.
Same
I group tome first first group sandwich I I ordered from the the end of of the
Yep that’s me too
Same
Levi man I want you to know over the past few days I’ve watched a lot of your videos and boy are they already helping me
"Accept the movement" and breathing is probably the best advice I took. For years, I was ok shooting, but I learned how to accept the movement and breathe my groups shrank a lot.

Well I just discovered his videos and am ready to try what I've learned. How have things gone for you?
Great video Levi! Something I see in so many archers and bowhunters as well is acquiring the target as you described. Most people start holding off of the target because they simply never are taught the way you describe it.

Great trigger option tip. Makes sense
Awesome tips, thank you, my target panic is out of control. The target reset is one that will help me a lot. THANK YOU!!👏
Absolutey spot on ! Have been shooting compound for some years, & after trying all the offered well meaning TP cures, have beaten TP with a cold set hinge with these same procedures. This advice agrees with my theories on overcoming the dreaded anxiety. Nice one, Levi !
I wanna move into Levi’s spare room! I’ll even do chores and stuff!
We're gonna have to get bunk beds. 😄
I was laughing the whole time cause this is me so bad!! So nice to know I’m not alone haha! Thanks for the tips
Thanks for the video Levi. I am using what you taught. It works my man. Thanks.
An awesome video
Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. I've used them to help improve my shooting.
I just got a Truball Sweet Spot Pro hinge release and I am solely practicing at 3 yards right now. I am concentrating on the smallest of points on the bag to focus on shot execution. This seems to help with me anticipating the shot or panicking. Looking forward to more videos.
Addressed my issues exactly, did not even realize thats why I was doing what I was doing - thank you
I always thought my VXR was too heavy because I would always feel like it was weighted down below my target but I find this video and it explains my target panic to a tee! Thank you for this video because I always thought I was the only one with this problem.

Any chance you can share more about adding the spring to the thumb barrel? I'd love to try that.

Semi new to archery and coming from rifle this requires so much more thought and practice but it's oh so addictive.

U hit on everything I do wrong. I lock right below the target and never knew y. Great video keep them coming
Thanks for the video Levi, some really good stuff! Great new tips to try.
This was so helpful… not alone in this 😂
I’ve always wondered why my vision on the target gets blurry-never thought that it was because I was holding my breath!
where was this video 4 years ago haha, I love this it WORKS!!!
Sick house man! and awesome information, thanks so much Levi

Story of my life. I can't get it up.
I've been saying I need bow viagra
Thank you Levi, you are the best, period.
I did this and made a release change went too spot hog wise guy and I had to move back form 20 yards finally i been so on thank u 🙏
Keep the content coming! I'm a fan!
I’m currently dealing with the exact same stuff u talked about with locking.
I like the part about the breathing aspect.Thank you much .All of these points r good.
Man I’m glad you’re doing this. I plan on getting Turner’s Shot IQ next month. Have been working on my shot for a while. I have/had the complete collapse TP but worked that out to now just freezing below.....I will beat this!

For me the thing that seemed to cure my problems was keeping my thumb off the release until i had acquired the center then i was good to go after that
I've always aimed low and raised slowly up until I hit the middle! This is gonna be hard to change.
I have struggled with freezing off target for 15 years. Some years it gets the best of me and i put my bow away for a year or more.
The movement part makes a ton of sense.
Not really. Lol
But when I did I shot it so fast he fell over. Haha.
That came from my up downs.
Levi. When you do this how long should it be in the middle for archery practice? Like 3 seconds. Or as long as I can? Thanks. Also what is this spring pull stuff. I'm new to the bow.
@10:26 , what sight is that? That blue pin is awesome
I didn't realize that Levi Morgan was a modern day prophet until he read my mail in this video. 😄😒
Well you'll maybe never see this, but i did this mistake, and just to realize it helped me correct it. Thanks.
Great video. But what if you're floating your pin over your intended target, you're aiming and aiming and you get that "surprise" fire, that may be the second your pin has floated over an inch.
Could you make a video for recurve?
At 60 yards I just can’t keep it on target. At 80 everything has to be perfect to make it in an 8 inch circle.
Western shooter. I don’t hunt much but it’s an SR6.
This is freakin awesome
🔥🔥🏹
Bro, you're reading me like a book haha
So I have dealt with what you describe and it is always good while practicing but when I’m in a stressed situation it appears two fold.
I usually draw above the target or spot and come to my click and then put my pin or dot on the spot I’m shooting.
Will have to try acquiring the spot then coming to click and then aiming to see how that helps.
Bro your a archery psychologist guru!
Talking about target panic causes target panic
But what if my pin is just a circle? I can still do the drill that he've told us?
Any suggestions if deal with tremors, hand shake. Just started to shoot compound as a way to build up some strength, 68 yrs young. Thoughts?
So for someone who has only shot a trigger style release and wants to try something new what would you recommend? You said need to have something with more movement?
I never had target panic till someone told me it was a actual thing lol
Here is the problem I have. Its not sitting in the middle or punching. I can practice in my basement 30-35 feet go thru my shot cycle and everything goes perfect. Even set a clicker as part of my cycle to make sure im where im supposed to be. Go outside set up 20 to 60 yard targets and no matter which one im shooting at I get hung up. Cant seem to find my point to relax my release hand. Go back inside and shoot perfect. What can I do?
@ThaReal CLo it even happens when I'm on my back porch. Seems like im pulling to hard to get the release to go off but only when I'm outside
I play an instrument so the breathing is no issue
Anyone have any tips for a good back tension release? I have never used one but I’m looking to buy one for spot shooting. Not sure really sure where to start.
Hi is there any other solution for target panic
I have a problem of freezing at 6:00 on the 9 ring or yellow. I tried everything to hold it in the middle no luck freeze at the bottom of the yellow. So instead of fighting with myself I just set my tape to 26 yards let it set at 6:00 on the yellow result 10 or just out for a nine. Are you ok with this or should I not be doing this?. Thank you
It's the ears man just like disc golf any goat look for the ears man
Why the heck r u looking at his ears
@@Heigdiruh7 because they're huge
Reset. Don’t punch
you mean ACQUIRE not AQUIRE (the latter aint a word in the english language)
so you're saying i can't say a akwire a latter to get up on the ruf?
Ain't isn't either fella
This really be the first comment 😂
Well you failed, you do sound snobbish and pedantic..
