Thank you I am going to follow a similar process this is a very clear and well done video!! This showed me how it is done so I now can make my changes for what I want. Thank you!!
@@johncoaltrain9485 I think everybody has had enough of fancy intros and low budget 3D logos made from Blender tutorials.....Like your video, people who just get to the point and share their information (freely as well) is always a very welcome break. Even if it isn't from a RUclips Star! Your still a Star.
Boy Meets Bush ya. It adds a hundred pounds or so. But I compare it to throwing one of my kids in the back- or an extra cooler. There are definitely ways to cut down on the weight. That just wasn’t my priority on this one.
@@johncoaltrain9485 Cool. I replaced by store bough drawers weighing 150 Lb. I build mine with 1 inch square aluminum tubes connected with plastic connectors. Weight is a big issue for me to keep below GVM. Learned a few tricks from your build Really well done.
How did you like the carpet? Doing the same project and debating between that indoor/outdoor stuff you have versus the 'speaker/audio' carpet some people talk about. Nice video
Carpet’s held up really well these last few years. I don’t know anything about that other type of carpet, but this stuff has treated me well and was pretty cheap.
Not off the top of my head. I just built them to fit. I imagine everyone’s build might be a little different based on lumber, materials, etc. I can measure mine and send them to you, but I’d hate to give you a solid number that didn’t fit your build.
John. Awesome build. I'm also looking to building the same thing but also into a bed converter. Do you feel you've compromised alot of storage space with the 2x8 wood as the foundation? In terms of using ply wood, some folks say you can get away with 3/4 ply wood.
Chad G I tend to “overbuild” just about everything. 3/4 ply would probably get the job done, but I didn’t trust it for putting 200# drawer glides in. 2x8s gave me the height I needed and only ate up a little bit more space than 3/4ply. (Mathematically, I think you’re losing exactly 1/2 cubic foot of storage space going with 2x lumber instead of 3/4ply.)
Great video thanks for sharing. I am trying to do something similar with my GX. Do you think 1x12s would be strong enough, or should I for sure get 2" wide pieces for the frame? Also have you had any issues with sturdiness not using a platform base? I see a lot of people use another sheet of plywood underneath as well.
I tend to overbuild everything at the cost of a little extra weight. If you want to go with 1x12s, I doubt you would have issues. My biggest concern wasn’t the top load but the attachment points for the drawer glides. Hence the thicker material. And no- I have had zero sturdiness issues. With the bolts pulling the platform down tight to the luggage D rings, that platform becomes a rock.
benoblest No issues with the drawers sliding around or making noise. If you take your time and make the drawers this right size, it shouldn’t be a problem at all. Adding the locks also keeps them from potentially moving in and out that 1” during travel.
My focus is more on strength, durability, availability of materials, and ease of construction. I’m not a stickler on shaving off a few pounds or adding a few inches. There are several tutorials out there for those who want a lightweight and efficient system. This build is for everyone else.

Your first attempt at a video is brilliant mate.
Thank you, sir. I’m not much of a RUclips star. Just trying to get stuff out if it’s helpful to people.

Thanks for the video! I'm going to use this blue print for my Honda Element to go car camping in PNW.
Wow, really liked your stencil trick! This will help me a lot on my project, thank you for this video, cheers from France!
SoulShakePower thanks for watching! Glad I could help out. Good luck!
Definitely using this for my summer project, appreciate it!
No problem. Good luck!!!
Love it man simple and easy to follow! Will use this as a guide for my 2017 4Runner. Thank you so much.
Let me know how it goes!
Really good and simple build buddy.. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching.
Bonitos videos saludos desde Honduras
Really like your stencil method. But worried about lot of weight with that thick wood.

Drilling holes first will stop the timber splitting.
Yep.
Really good build!
RossThomas PXL8ED thanks! It was fun.
Parabéns pela maquina vou copia desta forma aqui no Brasil tenho uma srw4 97 e vou fazer um camper.
really like your build, keep it simple!
Thanks!
did the piano hinges not work out?
They did. Check out the rest of the videos.
How tall are the drawers themselves? right around 9 inches?
How have the drawer slides been holding up? Do you feel like they live up to their 250lb statement?
Vladimir Mitrovic they have been working great! No problems whatsoever. Worth every penny. 👍🏻
nice work
Jeffy Ly thanks!
What tail light guard do you have on the 4Runner?
I THINK they are ProZ tail light guards from autoanything.com. I bought them in 2004, but that’s where I bought most of my stuff back in the day.
@@johncoaltrain9485 Thanks
Are those sliders really a quarter of an inch on each side .75
They are 3/4” thick on each side. Sorry if I said they were 1/4”.

Thank you for this build going to give it a go myself - One question- Do you have any dimensions for the drawers by chance? Thank you .

@@johncoaltrain9485 That would be cool when you have time - Not much of a carpenter so I would use it as a guideline . Thank you for the reply
Enak bisa istirahat di mobil,gk usah ke hotel, enteke piro mas
saya tidur nyenyak di dalamnya. Terima kasih.
Guy, please drill pilot holes to prevent splitting
Ha! Indeed. Good advice for sure. If I had a dollar for every project I neglected to drill pilot holes, I would probably have at least 5$.

Epic build, I’m about to do the same to my 2001! Did you by any chance happen to have a list of supplies needed for the whole job?
Nathan Smith I don’t. I’m really sorry.
