    I really want to do this in conjunction with repurposing a 3 season porch. I have strong building skills and no real budget constraints for something like a spa, but when I look at the issues you had; like leaks from the settling cracks, the long involved time line and the end result in this "showcase", I have a few questions: Would you do it again? Have you ever owned a plastic shell "plug and play" tub for comparison (I had in the past) and lastly what part of the country is this build in?

    • @johncoaltrain9485
      @johncoaltrain9485 2 года назад

      Even with the issues I’ve had, I would STRONGLY recommend it. I would absolutely do it again. If we ever move, It will be high in the priority list. I’ve never personally owned a different kid of hot tub, but my neighbor has one. Our energy bill increased about the same amount even though his is way smaller. So mine is way more efficient. He threw his out after a few years due to issues that would have cost a fortune to fix. Lastly, I am in northern Colorado.

    If tile was place throughout the tub would that help or not a good idea?

    • @johncoaltrain9485
      @johncoaltrain9485 2 года назад

      The parts that seal the tub and act as a membrane are the concrete product and the epoxy paint. The tile doesn’t. Plus- I had to grind away the epoxy paint on the upper area to get the tile to stick. So if tile were throughout the tub, there would be no epoxy paint. As for the hairline cracks, I’m not sure if tile would make a difference in stopping that. My guess is that the tile would crack also?? Good question. Not really sure!

    Awesome work. Im building almost the same thing currently. Is the block holding up? I worry about the outward pressure of the water pushing the block out. Also, is the 3hp pump enough for 18 jets or would you like more pressure? I will have the same amount but am considering running 2 pumps for 2 different zones but if one would do the job I may do that as itll be easier.

      One pump is doing great. Blocks are holding up fine. I’ve noticed some hairline cracking every time I drain all the water and refill, but i think that’s due to the foundation pad not being compacted well enough. Oops.

    The cracks are the result of not using re-bar and not fully grouting the walls, and perhaps not compacting the slab base adequately. So the cracks are the effect, not the cause. Repairing the cracks will not augment the structure. Water is heavy. It is pushing the walls outward.

    • @johncoaltrain9485
      @johncoaltrain9485 2 года назад

      He also has a lot of blocks turned on their side and they have no concrete in them, so he's not getting the full mass of a cinder block that should be filled with concrete. Probably 30-50% of his walls are hollow. They just didnt withstand the weight of the water completely. I think if he would have had all the blocks in the vertical direction and filled them all with concrete they would have interlocked and tied together and had that extra mass.
