The Great War... the war to end all wars, the conflict that saw man and machine clash at a scale never before seen in our world. A time of unparalleled strife, of debauchery and reckless idiocy, but also of bravery and unbridled courage. Of lions taking to the mud and sand, as well as the sea and air... A war that ended nothing... but changed everything. This song is not just about Battlefield 1. It´s about all those "Pawns of War" who gave their lives on either side, who trudged through such a hellscape and sacrificed so much for such little gain. Thank you for this song, Gav... really appreciate it. Never Forget.
There was nothing beautiful or holy about WWI. The Nazis also had nothing to do with it, although their rise to power was in part due to the aftermath of WWI. Y'know, if it wasn't you, Gav, this could EASILY be a song that was used in the time period. Well done! You somehow captured the essence of how WWI actually was, without going completely dismal and depressing. Yet, you still managed to make it feel somewhat uplifting, as if this song could be used to raise morale, without glorifying the war. It works so well! You deserve FAR more attention than you currently have. Keep being awesome!
Hey Gav, another great song. I saw your posts on Twitter about self-doubt and how it affects workload, and wanted to throw in my thoughts. You can consider it almost inevitable that not everyone will like every song because you make a greater variety of music than any artist I know. If somebody doesn't like a certain genre, they probably won't like your songs in that genre. However, not releasing a song because you think some people might not like it is not the right approach in my opinion. If you hadn't released Fires Fade because some fans didn't like it, the hundreds of thousands of people who liked it enough to give it over a million views would never have heard it. One man's "bad song" is another man's "best song ever" so please don't be down on yourself and your work because SOME fans dislike some songs. Keep up the good work, Gav. We love your music!
Yeah you see this in a lot of music videos comment sections. People hating on bands just because they tried something new or different, I believe Gavin should just make whatever he wants and ignore all the haters, the man is a genius, haven't heard a single song from him that I disliked.
Gav, I love your work and I am constantly listening to it. If you went and released a song tomorrow that I absolutely hated, I would still not be put off and would wait for your next upload. Your huge variety in genres means that you will always have a song I like. Keep up the great work.
Goly guck it's amazing! Btw, any Gav's song can be relistened with this speed for a totally new experience. Try Road Rage or Hell to Pay or The Natural Heart. It's like "wow". Thx for the advice :D
Kind of makes me think of Sabaton's "A Lifetime of War", both the english and swedish version in complement. The english version focuses on the endlessness and pointlessness of the war in question (the thirty year war in this case) while the swedish version focuses on the individual soldiers and their sense of meaninglessness. They may not be too familiar in style, perhaps, but they certainly are in subject matter.
Wow, Gav. I think you nailed it. From a sweeping, epic piece about the general tragedy of war, you broke it down to this extremely personal point of view. The voice you used there really gave the feeling of, like, a scared 17-year old Irish kid. I liked it. Taking it back into the big sound of the chorus really drove home that personal verse. I thought the change to and from the Arabian section was very smooth, though I'm not sure how I feel about the structure of that part itself. It felt like a nod to Lawrence of Arabia, though, which I liked. With the last repeat of the chorus, taking away everything but the drums and the penny whistle, it felt very personal again. I'd have liked to have heard just the lone voice of the soldier from the second verse then, but I still really enjoyed it. Well done.
I just listened to this 56 times on loop while writing my essay about World War 1 for my United States History class, and I honestly think it's the only thing that kept me in the correct mindset to write about the topic. Gav, thank you for making this song a thing, and making it an incredible thing, at that. Keep up the great work!
I like the military march drum line, fit perfectly with the WW1 theme. Another awesome song. On a side note you should do one inspired by "the expanse" best sci-fi series lately, good story line but also one of the few hard sci-fi movies/ stories lately. If you haven't watch it, I recommend it ( of course if you have time, I wonder how you even sleep lol ).
Me and my son absolutely love your music. I played this song to him and he exclaimed "this is what comes to my mind" and ran to get a pen and paper, then he drew a pirate ship and a pirate on board :D He obviously also loves your "beneath the black flag" song. Being finnish he has no idea what the words of the songs mean, but they still obviously inspire him.
Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye? Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe. Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander. -M*A*S*H I can only hope that someday, all of mankind learns this lesson. Because as long as one nation or one organization doesn't - war will be war, Hell will be Hell, and of the two, war will be worse.
Also on that note, perhaps you could make a song for the one game that shows the horrific nature of war even better than Battlefield 1 - This War Of Mine. Super relevant now, with the absolute SNAFU in Aleppo
wise words... M*A*S*H is really one of the best shows ever made! Nice to see, people still know it :D Still can't look at chicken without thinking of it... the last episodes nearly broke my heart
Level 7 is shaping up to be my favorite album this year. Awesome song, Gav. Really captured the essence of WWI. The horrors of war are spoken of in the lyrics, while the instrumentals echo the relative innocence of the time. Makes a great contrast.
For all those lions who died following the orders of donkeys. Great work gav. This is why I listen to you. The emotion that is clearly shown in each song. We've seen joy and sadness, hope and defeat, beginnings and ends. Thank you. For everything.
Aujourd'hui le 11 novembre. Je rends hommage à mes arrière-grands-parents qui ont versé leurs dans cette guerre, ainsi qu'à tous les soldats qui y ont combattus.
I love the call and answer marching style of this. This song could bear with a few hundred more verses and I'm tempted to adapt it into my LARP scenario's culture of pre-battle cynicism.
Today (11/11/2018) Marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice, bringing an end to the seminal catastrophe. Today we sing of those forgotten pawns of war.
Gavin i must say i almost never comment on any video, but after following you for over 1 year now (i think) i have to speak out that you make the greatest songs for video games on earth ! In nearly every song i have listened so far you take the very essence and the feeling of a game and create a masterpiece of a song (+video!). I often listen to the songs again and again, watching the video and reading all the lyrics, while sinking into the music. You really just nail it with your music, you understand what it's about. Keep the good work up ! May your creativity never end. :)
The way wars are fought is constantly changing, but war its self (shortsightedness, greed, anger, fear, futility) never does. Also the chorus is fantastic
I didn't think I would love anything more than levels 3, and 6 but level 7 is going to be your greatest yet. Fires fade/forever flame, get the gang back, natural heart, the path, hell to pay, the lucky ones, and now this.
Y'know, Gav, I always hear your new song and think, 'this is his best one yet'. But I've stopped thinking that way. Because ALL of your music is SO good that it transcends any sort of ranking system.
Leave it to Gavin to write a song about a World War I game that is a far greater tribute to the sacrifices of the nameless in the Great War than the game itself. THAT is why this channel is the Miracle of Sound.
THE MIRACLE HATH RETURNED! I cant help but feel an Irish influence in the chorus which beautifully adds to the songs feeling of comradeship But of course you explore several facets of the war throughout the song, and incite several moods. Another excellent song Gav dont have any money at the moment tho, so I'll buy the song on payday XD
Time to say something about this epic song. The military style. Drums do the work and chorus too. Now it doesn't sound like several solos singing at the same time, but like different soldiers. Oriental style. The orchestral piece from 1:33 to 1:44 is perfect. The strings are natural, not so electronic. I like the change of style and it reminds me of romantic era, when orientalism was popular in classical music. The whole song could be longer, but length isn't so important. Your songs are getting better and better. More natural, less electronic. I don't know what to say. Great, great, great work :) In my opinion the only complaint I can make, is that you should maybe make a vid in which you just play same game and talk about different things or make a short livestream. Have you thought of making any kind of meeting with fans?
This is, by far, one of his best pieces of art. Song is wonderful, and video clips fit perfectly. It shows the difference between how glorious war was supposed to be and how it really looked like. It gives you a faint feeling of what those departed pawns of war went through.
Can I just say. I don't really even play video games, but I always stay tuned for your songs and your podcast, you're just too good to not get me interested:)
In WAR there are no winners only losers, because what is gained is nothing compared to what’s lost. All those men (and women) that fought, sufferd and died in WW1. Few remember them and even fewer honor them, but none sing for them “forsaken pawns of war”

Thank you for a wonderful ode to encapsulate the hopeless circumstances of the individual solider on the battlefield, but also illustrating their stubborn determination to defend their country and their loved ones.
"Let Tau save the world with how awesome and good they are" would be a great title even if it's completly untrue. Sediously, no. Nowaday writing is bad and community is filled to the brim with Tau weaboos who don't know sh//t about any faction(even their own). Gavin shouldn't even waste his time on it in it's current state. Better a song about old sci-fi that viewed humanity as almost omnipotent given a chance and that INSPIRED W40k lore.
Ya mean like how said Tau are a group of deluded, totalitarian space communists that may or may not be brainwashed into believing whatever trite the Ethereals tell them and treat the non-Tau members of their empire as second-class citizens at best??
I am SUPER digging the vibe on this song, and I really like how the title ties into the fact that there really isn't a single central protagonist to this game. You just play as a succession of soldiers, the titular Pawns of War, and that is brought across really well here. Great job as usual, Gav!
I also love the focus on faces in this video, since it helps bring across that even though these men and women were just one in a sea of soldiers, they were still PEOPLE and had lived and wants and dreams outside of the conflict.
"At the end of the game, the king and the pawn go back in the same box"

I've just listened to the song for the tenth time today. Seriously good.
Yeah you see this in a lot of music videos comment sections. People hating on bands just because they tried something new or different, I believe Gavin should just make whatever he wants and ignore all the haters, the man is a genius, haven't heard a single song from him that I disliked.
Thank you. I'll be listening to a lot less negative comments in 2017 I can promise that, haha
miracleofsound Imo I don't see why you'd get negative comments, your music is awesome regardless if it isn't someone's taste.
Gav, I love your work and I am constantly listening to it. If you went and released a song tomorrow that I absolutely hated, I would still not be put off and would wait for your next upload. Your huge variety in genres means that you will always have a song I like. Keep up the great work.
THIS IS AMAAAAZIIING
Brilliant, I can't wait. Love you and your work!
Same here
His work always amazes me. Even when I'm too early to see it in anything above 360 p
Golden Bird Exactly. That's the modern day rite of passion. Watching a video in less than full HD =D. But the song is still great.
Isaac Thefallenapple Exactly. But it's even better in hq
found ya goldie
+Knight of Morr Gods damn it
I play this song on repeat every Veteran's Day and Memorial Day here in America. Still one of my favorites you've ever done!
I love how this sounds like something you would sing whilst marching to the battlefield. Great job as usual, but that really goes without saying now
Listen to this once. And then listen to it at 1.25 speed. Two totally different experiences.
holy shit your right, i like both speeds
Goly guck it's amazing! Btw, any Gav's song can be relistened with this speed for a totally new experience. Try Road Rage or Hell to Pay or The Natural Heart. It's like "wow". Thx for the advice :D
Cadence and tempo can make all the difference.
Is it weird that whenever I try to sing this I do the 1.25 version?
Kind of makes me think of Sabaton's "A Lifetime of War", both the english and swedish version in complement. The english version focuses on the endlessness and pointlessness of the war in question (the thirty year war in this case) while the swedish version focuses on the individual soldiers and their sense of meaninglessness. They may not be too familiar in style, perhaps, but they certainly are in subject matter.
this tune. was stuck in my head. for 8 months and i couldn't remember where i'd heard it.... so glad to find it again.
I would like to offer both my sympathies and my congratulations.
from 'pawns' of war to specialists, how far has the franchise fallen
The saddest in this game, is that no central powers campaign
Так это хорошо. Мы играем за разных персонажей на разных фронтах войны. Все кампании хороши. (мне лично понравилась кампания танкиста и австралийца)
Paczensorek303 Then use the great Google Translator
No, how about you just fucking say it in English instead?
King Stannis Baratheon It's too easy.
Maybe in DLC?
This needs an extended version ASAP! So good! Love these songs!
Well done.
ElfInflicted yeah and it's one of the few battlefield 1 song to not sit on infinite warfare
1:29 you can just feel how much he's sick of this war
I simply love the way that the music (with a very deep and dark meaning) is so happily and mellodically sung
War.. War never changes.
CJ Ware some things never change ..
war has changed
guillaume turpault "Some things never change" is the name of one of his songs ;)
Yes methods of war changed but stuill 1 thing is the same, peapole dies
Actually the First World War changed the way we perceive and fight war extremely.
Gav is a SUPERHUMAN confirmed, superpower? Doesn't need sleep :o
Hoist the flags
Hold the lines!
Fire at will!
*Will gets a terrified look in his eyes before fleeing*

What did will ever do to you?
Definitely one of your best. A good tribute to those who fought in the war to end all wars.
-M*A*S*H
I can only hope that someday, all of mankind learns this lesson.
Nice to see, people still know it :D
Still can't look at chicken without thinking of it... the last episodes nearly broke my heart
Lex Samreeth And War...war never changes.
I love M*A*S*H
Amen brother.
The word for this is SOLEMN. Great job, Gav! As always
Daniel Alejandro If you want solemn, listen to Flander's fields.
Or Angels Calling.
Rory mercury The Sabaton song? Great song.
Pawn of war, what does that entirely mean? Like someone who gets caught in this war? Or just the troops that are in this?
Nathan LeFevre
Nothing special, just another Grunt among many.
Level 7 is shaping up to be my favorite album this year. Awesome song, Gav. Really captured the essence of WWI. The horrors of war are spoken of in the lyrics, while the instrumentals echo the relative innocence of the time. Makes a great contrast.
This is your single greatest song yet.
I say this with complete sincerity.
This what John Williams wishes he could be every single day of his life.
I don't care what anyone says... This was probably your best year! Can't wait for Level 7!
This song came out at a good time, Canada's Remembrance Day is here in 10 days and this feels like a great tribute to those we'll be remembering.
My dad was a soldier, I think he would have appreciated this song
For all those lions who died following the orders of donkeys.
Great work gav.
This is why I listen to you. The emotion that is clearly shown in each song. We've seen joy and sadness, hope and defeat, beginnings and ends.
Thank you. For everything.
Aujourd'hui le 11 novembre. Je rends hommage à mes arrière-grands-parents qui ont versé leurs dans cette guerre, ainsi qu'à tous les soldats qui y ont combattus.
On ne passe pas...
And here we see a wild Gavin in his natural habitat. Bringing joy to the world with his majestic music.
I love the call and answer marching style of this. This song could bear with a few hundred more verses and I'm tempted to adapt it into my LARP scenario's culture of pre-battle cynicism.
I love this song ❤❤❤❤
You put more WW1 feeling in this than the whole game did. Good show.
Just as I was missing Gavin's awesome music, it's back. Thank you so much!
Today (11/11/2018)
Marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice, bringing an end to the seminal catastrophe.
Today we sing of those forgotten pawns of war.
amazing work 0:58 - 1:20 is my favourite part
Gavin i must say i almost never comment on any video, but after following you for over 1 year now (i think) i have to speak out that you make the greatest songs for video games on earth ! In nearly every song i have listened so far you take the very essence and the feeling of a game and create a masterpiece of a song (+video!). I often listen to the songs again and again, watching the video and reading all the lyrics, while sinking into the music.
You really just nail it with your music, you understand what it's about.
Keep the good work up ! May your creativity never end. :)
sorry
Jackson Anderson wut
Kill me pls
Thank you very much, it means a lot to me when people feel the music that much :)
THEIF
The way wars are fought is constantly changing, but war its self (shortsightedness, greed, anger, fear, futility) never does. Also the chorus is fantastic
Well, it's certainly a more fitting song than Seven Nation Army. That's for goddamn well sure.
The One and Only Michael McCormick The Trailer was good
It sent the wrong message though for what they were trying to go for.
Havoc101c It was badass though
colin russell definitely
It was the glitch mob version which fit even less but nevertheless I agree.
Absolutely beautiful song sir! Glad I can hear something with such new quality about something passed nearly a hundred years ago!
Have to remember to listen to this again when Anzac Day comes around again.
I didn't think I would love anything more than levels 3, and 6 but level 7 is going to be your greatest yet. Fires fade/forever flame, get the gang back, natural heart, the path, hell to pay, the lucky ones, and now this.
This is amazing.
I could totally hear this as a marching song or a drinking song of the era
The instrumentals sound celtic at times, love it!
Y'know, Gav, I always hear your new song and think, 'this is his best one yet'. But I've stopped thinking that way. Because ALL of your music is SO good that it transcends any sort of ranking system.
You are completely right, i think he just lost the ability to make bad music when he started the channel.
I would like to acknowledge the awesomeness of the title font.
The title font is awesome.
Brilliant as always, Gav. Both simultaneously uplifting and heartrending. Great job.
And shorter just means shorter iteration time!
Leave it to Gavin to write a song about a World War I game that is a far greater tribute to the sacrifices of the nameless in the Great War than the game itself. THAT is why this channel is the Miracle of Sound.
THE MIRACLE HATH RETURNED!
I cant help but feel an Irish influence in the chorus which beautifully adds to the songs feeling of comradeship
But of course you explore several facets of the war throughout the song, and incite several moods.
Another excellent song Gav
dont have any money at the moment tho, so I'll buy the song on payday XD
Gavin never disappoints, man. One hell of a musician. Once again the song perfectly captures the atmosphere of what it tries to portray.
Im honor... Of those great warriors... A minute of silence ... Rise your arms brothers !
;_;7 R.I.P
In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow....
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The lark, still bravely singing, fly
i dont listen to miracle often but when i do i get these chills because of how good the music sounds
1:20 that's how war is
Can I just say. I don't really even play video games, but I always stay tuned for your songs and your podcast, you're just too good to not get me interested:)
why is everything you do gold?
Josh Snyder i have built a theory that gavin is secretly the god of music incarnated
He just wants to keep his identity a secret
boomerpro87 my god.
Josh Snyder he is the MIRACLE of sound.
He has a gold standard
Kocurro Hey Kocurro. How are you doing?
I'm just getting chills each time I listen to it. Love the little changes in it, and the overall atmosphere the song has
Press F for every hero of war ho will never come back to his own home and to his family!
Hits the nail on the head at capturing a WW1 feel. Good work, Gav!
I have a fancy for marching drums and you, my friend, tickled it. Loved the song ^_^
This is one of my favourite of all of your songs. Simply superb tribute to WWI.
In WAR there are no winners only losers, because what is gained is nothing compared to what’s lost.
All those men (and women) that fought, sufferd and died in WW1.
Few remember them and even fewer honor them, but none sing for them “forsaken pawns of war”
In war their are winners and losers,as I live in the year 158
This song and the rest of your songs proves your one of the better musicians out there. keep up the beautiful work
1:50 he said / blood of the empires on the sand/ that's referred to The ottman empire?
Yes
still cant get 8ver how well you did with this song.
Great job!
Across the savage skies
and through the fissures in the fields
the rumble of the engines
and the trundel of the wheels
through hell and horror trudge
and yet our spirits never yield
will they sing of these forsaken PAWNS OF WAR?
Hoist the flags, hold the lines
lessons ever lost to time
now we sing for you
departed PAWNS OF WAR.
My bonni lays afar
upon a lonely eiderdown
while I dream of rats and tar
within my burrow in the ground
internal caping scar
of boiling mud and thundering sound
they won´t sing of this forsaken
PAWNS OF WAR.
Hoist the flags, hold the lines
lessons ever lost to time
now we sing for you
departed PAWNS OF WAR.
Death on the dunes
we feed the deserts
blood of the empires
on the sand.
Hoist the flags, hold the lines
lessons ever lost to time
now we sing for you
departed PAWNS OF WAR.
Hoist the flags, hold the lines
lessons ever lost to time
now we sing for you
departed PAWNS OF WAR.
Thank you for a wonderful ode to encapsulate the hopeless circumstances of the individual solider on the battlefield, but also illustrating their stubborn determination to defend their country and their loved ones.
"From mud, through blood to the green fields beyond"
ever though my throat hurts, your songs make my sing along, that's why I sub to you
Anyone else really want gav to make a warhammer 40k song?
I've been waiting for one from him. So want.
He should do one with the guys who do the Inquisitor movie.
*seriously
How this tablet changed it to "d" I have no idea.
America: “How bad was World War I for you guys?” Europe: “Remember the Civil War?”
And times that by 20
Real bad.
Did Europe lose 5% or so of its entire population
@@gamerinc7410nah about the same atleast for the South. Many states lost around 1/10 of its men and it’s been ravaged ever since.
@@gamerinc7410 …000
Man, I have listened to these newer songs dozens upon dozens of times on youtube... cannot WAIT for Level 7 so I can get them offline.
Great song, but I wish it were longer.
really. really like the theme of the song. it feels almost like a warchant, something the soldiers sing while matching!
I would love a version with more lyrics. Otherwise fantastic job!
