HIROYUKI at TEDxTokyo (English)

- Often called the thumb piano, the kalimba is the world's simplest keyboard instrument, African-born and with a pure, uncomplicated sound. HIROYUKI's unique kalimba tones, however, blow away such preconceptions and hint at the infinite ways in which this small instrument can be played. No one else seems able to mimic his fiery passion, the raindrop-clear silences, that express the ultimate rhythms of life. Although HIROYUKI primarily performs solo, he actively mixes it up in experiments with other musicians at dances, plays, recitals, art installations and concerts that go beyond genre. Live houses, clubs, cafés and festivals are where he can be spotted performing-and even on Tokyo's streets, depending on his mood.

As someone with a kalimba, this guy truly is incredible
Same imao
Oh sure you have kalimbas? Proof?
@Jelly-lc2db Why would you even question that? I have ten myself. 3 Lingtings, 1 Gecko, 1 Seeds Chromatic, 1 Chills Angel Chromatic, and 4 Hugh Traceys. They aren't hard to get from Kalimbamagic or Amazon with prices ranging from $40 to $150. Prove it? My word is proof. Prove that it's not.
Do you notice how he puts his forefingers over the tines? Do you think that's just for support or to shorten the resonance. I have a difficult time preventing the tines from vibrating against my fingernails causing buzzing when playing repetitive notes. Doesn't happen on the stiff tined Gecko but very pronounced on my other Kalimbas and I have very short nails. I can eliminate it by using thumb guards but I hate playing with those things. His finger positioning, if used to deaden the vibration, is possibly an interesting solution.
This man is a genius.. look how engrossed he is..he is amphidextrous...while those who gave a negative comment dont even have one fourth of their half brain working...hats off to this musician!!!
I agree, as a Kalimba user myself, I find it hard to increase tempo since the tines are narrow.
So, if someone doesn't like wat you does, means he has one fourth of their half brain working?... seems legit
@@Adrjan77 ye prolly true. That's why that person isn't able to perceive and be in the shoe of the other person. Right or wrong, if another person doesn't get what one is doing, he doesn't understand half or 1/4th or prolly nothing of what or how the other person thinks, so technically yes
I like his vibe. How he dressed up and the passion he puts on his performance. Hats off!
Crazy that all those sounds came from one instrument. I had my eyes closed and it sounded like at least 3 instruments. Amazing
I think this video has pretty oriental sound. Some can't understand it because they are not used to these sounds. It's perfect.
Some cant understand it because it sounds too low X_D.
Close your eyes and feel it flowing xD
I thought it was an African instrument?
@@domenico_ginny6164 i believe it is
@@domenico_ginny6164 Yh it is
This specific Kalimba performance is a style all its own. I feel sorry for negative people who do not understand it.
It’s hard to explain but; most people who play this instrument only use just their thumbs and strike the tines to create a single sound, this man however is a true pro! He uses his index fingers to change the tone of the strike and also on the last down beat of the bridge as he hits a note he hits it so hard that when his thumb comes of the tine it then strikes the wood of the Kalimba which gives off a percussion sound. Like hitting a block or drum to keep tempo. Truly amazing 🥰
I can only imagine his gameboy skills.
lmfao
Zamn 8 years ago o•o
He is also a world class thumb wrestler
lol its so funny 😂😂
I think his wife loves it more
Actually this is a difficult technique for playing Kalimba, Since he plays with jazzy scales, it sounds really complicated if you are really understands about music.
The problem of this performance is only the sounds. They should make better sound check before the real concert because this instruments is literally not loud enough such as guitar, piano, violin on the big stage like this.
I always loved Kalimba, but thought it was too easy to play it. I am really impressed on what you're capable on doing on this instrument... just... WOW!!!!
The Kalimba and I, we are a harmony of individual identities. And I play my Kalimba daily. This person is skilled.
Playing these things takes you to another world I feel him on the vibe he’s in with it. Incredible skills with it!
I love playing this instrument, going out and recording its unique sound brings light to my day.
This is a true musican’s approach to simple instrument...mastery. Beautiful!
Its pretty good to say, this musician has arrived at the top of his journey, all he need now is to keep enjoying his music.
One of the best kalimba player on RUclips!
Nobody understands what he is doing and its sad how rude the comments are
Sounds rather interesting, not my thing but he kinda added percussions to it which is nice.
This guy is really good. Been a Kalimba fan since first hearing Taj Mahal play one on the old Flip Wilson show...
I didn’t understand at the start but when i used headphones, I could listen to all the sounds. It was amazing.
@@fiyakhue3587 you can say it sounds good, because it sounds good.
I just discovered the Kalimba I have one. I did not enjoy his way of making music at all but I’m also glad some people can enjoy it that’s what it’s all about
He is performing the ancient soul of it´s origin in master´s way.
No copy, but intiuve in a perfect timing to be telling a lot.
I use go the same way but very diffrently.
What I do is to record a talking just by the simple device of my phone in a moment of now and to be sending it to the distant person that was leaving me a messagge before, by words or none.
Never I know what I am doing in this moment, never I can repeat because the sound is meant to be nothing else
than the modulated air by an unspoken word, while the spirit has already crossed continents and oceans.
Some of my recordings, framed by some selfmade images, to be seen at my channel became made when the message of the sound has done it´s job.
Now they are meant to be shared.
This master is an old traveling soul.
My deepest respect for him.
Wow! What a great and different way of playing the Kalimba! Well done!
Wow! So talented
wonderful and talented!
almost like drum solo technique, kalimba players often keep the beat steady, this is more like classical with an expressive shifting of tempo that is also heard from good jazz drummers
EXCELLENT!!! Wow! That is so diffficult to do. Ignore the ignorance here. They have no clue.
Yeah that's pretty amazing
great clicky sounds there

Woah I’ve never seen a kalimba tuned like that

I just realized how crazy i would look walking around playing with one of those all day long in public. XD
That thing is a one man jazz box... saw one on marketplace. Might have to get one.
I had a dream I was playing my new kalimba like that. I woke up screaming.
OMG it is extraordinary
This is so beautiful...
Nice piece.. but in my opinion Yancarlos Sanchez is much more innovative with the kalimba as an instrument.. and even more powerful than innovation is the ancient interlocking sound of shona mbira itself..
Master of the Kalimba.
this is so good
An SM57 to mic it up?...jeez they could've used something better!...anyway...an amazing player and great performance.
This is what texting with a blackberry sounded like
Anyone have a link to more of him this is magical!
he on x games mode
Where are the negative comments at? I can't understand how you can't at least understand he does indeed have a fair bit of skill.
Also, how is he making those taps?
Wow This is amazing 🤩
He do be viben tho
You, Kevin Spears, and myself are responsible for keeping the Kalimba upfront
nice performance, tapi sayang kurang jelas suara kalimbanya :(
Its like an instrument DS haha.
Jazz Haze I guess he meant like Nintendo :P
Grabeee 🤩 galing!
impressive
Apart from the music, he looks like he's struggling while trying to keep 5000 ants in the box 😂
Beautiful. 🎶
would be nice if you could hear it haha
It's more about the rhythm than the actual melody. He's showing that playing the kalimba doesn't necessarily have to result in some sweet lullaby melody. It can also be played in more percussive manner. It's just unconventional and you're not used to it. I loved it.
he is playing it like drums and a few other instruments
I want to understand how he make all those songs on the kalimba, mainly those "Horse walking" songs
**standing applause**
great clicky sounds there!!
EXCELLENT
Not the best mic setup to record that... TEDx messed that up 😐
it looks like the kalimber is a living creature and he don´t want to drop ist
That's because it is
Is a kalimba player called kalimbist? I'm really curious and I could not find the answer I need from google... If anybody knows, please tell me?
Like how he keeps beating his feet while playing.
Wow 👏
Damn thats fast. I cant even play that well
getting some strong four tet vibes here
Its like listening to Bonobo
What kalimba is he using ?
damn this kalimba shit is hard to play...
It’s just like texting with your cellphone
So nice..
they tried really hard to glorify it, but there's one massive issue, projection. ( i mean, also its still limited, as you can play any instrument beyond its "normal use" (for example people use percussion on guitars all the time) )
wild performance though
ai sim é kalimbeiro mesmo
Listen to it with headphones
HELLO.
I've played music for over 55 years having learned from my concert pianist Grandmother. Am I the only one who views the African Griot Thumb Piano as something on which to play traditional, melody based music like, well, for students perhaps, "Doe A Deer"? Or, "Aura Lee"? Or, "Beautiful Dreamer"? Or, "Pata Pata"? Or, "Pitter Patter"?
how in the world-
THIS is why I read youtube comments :) Yancarlos sanchez, on my playlist! gracias
Could produce great trance tracks
Ohh yeahh, especially psytrance
I thought this instrument sounded cool until I got to this video
Really
Actually the traditional European music is what is new to kalimba. The kalimba is an African instrument with much percussion. You have no clue.
Well that’s 1:10 I’ll never get back…
how does he make the clicking noise?
Percussion
Kwake what instrument of percussion?
呃…what do you mean
Thats why piezo microphones has been invented...
All cool but why did he start walking around all of a sudden? Was just weird and you couldn't really hear the kalimba.
