    Greg and Colin have influence not just my video game purchases bringing me officially over to Sony, but a lot of my life. Growing up in a like-minded community Greg and Colin are the ones to make me see from another perspective and gave me the eyes I need to see past the trends and think on my own. And while I do not always agree with Colin (Greg is love Greg is life) I appreciate and love that he is not afraid to share his opinion, which inspired me to be more open to sharing mines despite the consequences.

      A problem is a problem no matter how small it is. It's been near enough a decade and Sony still haven't added the feature, despite huge demand from the fans

      +Jin Guy Obviously it's not a world ending problem. but that doesn't mean there is no room for criticism and complaints. Dismissing others' concerns as "first world" is simply showing your immaturity or fanboyism. I would not want to live in your world where nothing ever improves because no one ever complains. Let's just all be quiet and do as we are told.

    All I know about the Sunset Overdrive story is that supposedly Insomniac brought up to Sony and Sony wanted to buy the franchise from them (like they do with many games they partner on). Insomniac said no and Sony didn't like that, Insomniac and Microsoft met up (have no idea who contacted who) and Insomniac showed them, Microsoft liked it and was fine with Insomniac keeping the IP.
    That's supposedly what happened, and similar things have been stated by Insomniac officials.

    Colin, you're really wrong about MGS. It was pretty profitable. It made $171 million day 1.

    • @idakev
      @idakev 8 лет назад +1

      +Mc_Laggin www.vg247.com/2015/10/15/metal-gear-solid-5-made-twice-as-much-as-avengers-age-of-ultron-on-launch-day/

    • @rhinoskinnedplatypus9345
      @rhinoskinnedplatypus9345 8 лет назад +1

      +Mc_Laggin That article assumes that Konami gets to keep all of the $60 from a game sale. That is incorrect. Developers if they are their own publisher (as Konami is) keep about 45% of the money at best. The rest goes to the console maker, retailers, packaging, and marketing. Honestly though, I doubt a game as big as this will get that 45%. But anyway, 5 million units = $300 million x .45 = $135 million. So that's a $55 million profit to make the next game. $25 million less than they had before.

    • @idakev
      @idakev 8 лет назад +3

      Rhinoskinned Platypus
      *I totally understand how you screwed the maths up a bit, but you're thinking about this the wrong way entirely*. By your estimates, they don't have only $55 million to make the game. That's not how profit works (*that's additional funds*). They would have the full $135 million. An easy mistake. *They made back all the money they invested into the game*. *I understand that they don't keep all the money, but it's obvious the game was profitable, to at least some degree, from day 1*.
      Therefore, Colin's claim that the game is not near profitable was Kinda silly. Do you see what I'm saying now?

    The one thing I think Colin and Greg weren't taking into too much account about metal gear is the fact it was sold as two games. ground zeroes was sold to help cover the costs of metal gear at 30 dollars and moved 570000 units at least on consoles. Then there was the steam release at 20 dollars a pop. Not to mention their branding partnerships with Rey eyewear as well as puma. I should also mention the collectors edition which sold out on ps4 in NA was double the price at around 120.00 I'm sure they have already made a big profit from metal gear which is why they are already looking into what the future of the franchise will look like in the coming years.

    You guys are absolutely right about mirror's edge and you've motivated me. I'm one of the people babbling about how I'd love another continuation of the presumed dead game. So I've officially put my money where my mouth is and preordered the game to support the company that's actually listening to the gamers. If this does well with sales there might be more games down the pipeline not just from EA that dig up games that deserve more fleshed out sequels. Personally I'd like to see sequels to Murdered Soul Suspect and Remember Me.

    Man I have never been more hyped for a game then I was for MGSV, and I still haven't stopped playing it. I think Konami shot themselves in the foot with The Phantom Pain since it had such a big build up and then they made Kojima push it out the door in an unfinished state with giant plot holes and just missing pieces. I think if Kojima could've finished his masterpiece, which it still is, it would've done far better than the 3/4 of game he got to go out on.

  • @calvin624
    @calvin624 8 лет назад

    I think the reason Metal Gear Solid 5 didn't sell that well was due to the fact that reviews kept saying the story elements that MGS games were known for were absent from the game. Not a lot of people play Metal Gear for the stealth action game play alone, sure it's fun to sneak passed a few guards and render a few more unconscious but usually that action is split up by a 2 hour cutscene, that's what the franchise is known for. Going from mission to mission and upgrading your base and doing this and doing that, making it an open world with microtransactions etc. I think a lot of players were fatigued by the notion before they even picked up the game and so they didn't. Fallout 4 will be massive because it seems to be doing the opposite, the game looks very similar to what we've seen before but they're changing gameplay elements to hopefully turn it into a better experience overall. On top of the fact that you can sell it to your friends as Skyrim with guns.

    Strongly disagree about the digital only argument. I like to be able to actually own my games, so that I can sell them if I don't like them or get a refund. The only way we'd be held back, is if we went digital only. People would expect cheaper games, and would be less likely to try something new because they can't take it back. It would be a nightmare, imo.

    • @killjot58

      Can what? I certainly can't sell them. And, from what I can tell about the refund policy, it's fairly limited. So, sure, you can refund anyway, but you are also more limited about when you can refund. :P Not a good enough trade-off for me.

    Too Colins point about influencing their listeners, I was interested in Until Dawn but on the fence and had decided not to get it at all and maybe watch a Lets Play instead. But with Colin mentioning how good it ended up being, I went ahead and bought it and ended up really enjoying the game. Most of the time I trust Colins judgment unless it's just simply not my kind of game. Shovel Knight was great and I also got that because of Colin talking it up.

    I really really really hope Mirror's Edge does well - there's something about the first one that made me fall in love with it, the overall aesthetic and music especially. I think it will certainly perform better than the first game; I believe it will be a modest success for EA, nothing too special, but it won't under-perform. There's my two cents anyway.

  • @Godeiche

    On coop games: it's not so much the coop games that are dead. The mltiplayer aspect is alive and kicking, even the couch coop thing. The mixed-core games are what's problematic. Something that would be both easy to pick up AND fun. Appealing to both hardcore and softcore (or casual) gamers. Don't Starve is interesting, but it's also VERY trial-and-error intensive, stressful.
    All in all, there's not a lot aout there.

    Sounds to me like the back end of PSN names is on multiple DB's. Probably tied together with shoestrings. They'll be trying to export all the data intact to then manipulate and add to a new DB of some form.... whilst trying to keep everyones data, leaderboards and trophies intact.
    It'd also be a good idea to give each user a number as main (hidden) name - then alias with your PSN chosen name - which would mean you can then change whenever, maintaining original user number.

    EA has said that Mirror's Edge sold about 2.5 Million copies. This was back when people had no clue what Mirror's Edge was, and anything about it for that matter.
    I would be surprised if Catalyst sells anything less than 5 Million copies. Which, for EA standards would be one of their lower selling items, but still not something to scoff at.
    I for one am stoked about it, and is one of the few games coming up this next year that I'm going to be playing day one.

    when they compared how playstation handles usernames when compared to xbox, it reminded a lot of the software and hardware that i deal with at my work. the US is no longer the electronics giant that it used to be when it comes to hardware. Korea, Japan, and Taiwan blow us out of the water. This can be seen with the designs of the xbone and the ps4. the ps4 is able to pack more power into a smaller package while keeping the power supply internal. however, it's been my experience that our code and software programming still trumps that of these other markets. for the most part, our code is better organized and created with the future in mind. this can also be seen with the psn names dilemma. the base code of the Microsoft network seems both more stable, and more flexible.

    The Witcher 3 has also sold around 6 million copies. Coincidentally, it's budget was also around 81 million dollars. CD Projekt Red seemed pretty happy about it (although they are a much smaller company than Konami). However, 360 million dollars minus 80 million (budget), minus marketing expenses (let's say 30 million), minus other expenses (let's say 10 more)... that's almost 240 million dollars in profit. It's that really a low ROI for a AAA game?

      Only $30? Wow! I know they don't get everything from each unit (they have to give money to retailers, etc), but didn't think the net margin would be so low. Either way, after taking their production budget into account, marketing expenses and the such they should still be making something like 80 to 100 million perhaps

    The reason for me to buy physical is its cheaper. I completely understand that games would be cheaper if they were digital only, but for now its not. If I can get a game for $30 instead of 60 on PSN, im going to. I dont have the money to pay full price, with no reselling, for every single game I want. And that doesnt mean money doesnt go to the devs for me. I buy my copies physically, new if I can, then sell it on ebay (depending on the game). Not everyone can afford to get everything digitally, which is an issue mr. sean pitts has addressed in his podcast xD

    I agree with Colin that games would be cheaper if they went completely digital. However, as someone who has a crappy Internet speed like many others downloading a game is a hassell and arduous process. Games aren't getting any smaller either. Also I like to resell games I know I will never play again so I can buy new releases. If there was a way to do that digitally I'm in.

      Those are lifetime sales over years. Majority of those sales were at a discount. For an IP to be successful it would have to sell a little more than that in its opening month or two on the market.

    Crazy, Collin and Greg are about about MGSV sales.
    Now I don't know if it's true or not, but supposedly marketing was included in the 80 million dollar budget, which I think is true because I barely saw any marketing towards MGSV. Most marketing came from Kojima's trolling and Twitter.
    - On PC it sold very well.
    - Ground Zeroes sold over 2 million copies (not including digital). That's just one mission that made them a ton of money. Add that to TPP sales.
    There's a reason why Konami already announced today that they're working on the next big budget MGS title and plan on throwing a lot of money at it.
    Oh and Konami also announced that they're stock rises quite a bit do to mobile downloads and MGSV. MGSV has been very successful so far, and and sold extremely well for a niche title.
    MGS4 sold 7 million copies in its life time and had a budget almost the same as MGSV.
