To me this song is about Marko defending his father, an English teacher with alcohol problem. Marko had problems with alcohol too, and be realized he has to quit drinking or it will ruin his career. I think it was around 2010. I've seen an old Nightwish video where Marko talks to the audience holding a bottle of vodka. He said he can be around people who drink, but when they get really drunk they make no sense anymore, so he leaves. Marko' father sometimes had his acoustic guitar with him at school, and he played an sang to the pupils, and they loved it. He sang to Marko and Marko's brother, and Marko has sung to his twin sons. Marko now has a baby daughter, 10 months old, with his 2nd wife, her 1st child. She is Brazilian. Check out on your own, no reaction, please: MARCO HIETALA - LULLABY Marko playing acoustic guitar and singing Black Sabbath's PLANET CARAVAN as lullaby to Jukka's, (the original Nightwish drummer), newborn daughter. I saw him performing this in its original Finnish, about a month ago in Finland. Really struggled with holding back the tears. But enjoyed it to the fullest. Amazing.

my musical journey started 37 years ago, i used to listen anything metal that came out. after few years i was 12 years old my mother and brother gave me a guitar and i was hooked. learned all Metallica songs and stuff by ear, and shit i would play anything as far i found someone to play with. now 32 years playing i have way different set, blues guitar and amp to play jazz and everything, still hooked on good metal. music makes no difference, good song is a good song. i am tearing up to this English language version to this because it is a good song, Finnish one be better for me. thank you to reminding us that it isn't always metal or genre that get you going.
He does a slightly more rocky one called Stones that you would love... also the last song on the latest Nightiwh album called "Endlessness" that is a similar theme to this one is well worth checking out.
Loved your reaction. I agree with you, Marko is a unique and wonderful musician and person. I love every member of Nightwish and have listened to some of their music or an interview every day since I discovered them near the beginning of last year. But Marko shines the brightest for me. Others have mentioned Marko's win on the Masked Singer. If you choose to watch alone only or react to them, there are 8 videos - use the ones from Sanni, they have subtitles (both the judges and Marko speak Finnish) and song lyrics. Before he sings each week, he does a wonderfully silly skit where he drops clues about who he is. He picked a wide variety of genres, and he performs in costume with some dancers/actors. The last video is him winning, being unmasked, and explaining why he loved doing it. Well worth watching - he sounds great and it's so playful. Two more suggestions, his cover of War Pigs live in Prague 2020 (Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath and Marko are mutual fans) and an older video of Tides with his band Tarot from Nightwish Arena (they've enhanced the video and have included both subtitles and lyrics). Both are powerful performances.

Marko is the best. It's great you did the English version first but i guarantee you will find yourself listening to the Finnish version even more. I was a music major and i teach piano and play piano but Nightwish and other reaction videos have ignited a love for music in me more than ever. So, i get it.
If you liked this you might also want to check "Savo's Song" ruclips.net/video/857I_g3ocMc/видео.html featuring Marco. It's based on old regional anthem of province of Savo where Marco hails from.
Marko is special. He feels what he sings so deeply, and that comes through in his music. I'm usually the type who likes a piece of music and then moves on, but there is something about Marko's voice that just grabs hold and will not let go. I have a playlist of just his music and it gets played every morning. Thank you so much for doing this reaction. Others have made some great suggestions and there is a lot more out there, including his performances in Finland's Masked Singer. I look forward to hearing more.
Went through the comments, but didn't see anyone mentioning couple of cool post-nightwish songs featuring Marko. He has done some amazing Black Sabbath covers too. Waltari feat. The message in the song is so true too. Echoes of the past are always within us all. Echoes of our childhood, our parents and our homes and families. And in turn you will pass that on to your kids and friends...
You wouldn't think that this was the kind of song that Marko would write, but here we are. Marko's range is nearly as wide as Floor's. Check out the rendition of 'Gangsta's Paradise' that he performed on the Masked Singer. The judges had no chance of identifying him as Marko ruclips.net/video/R1aLZdTzQig/видео.html
RIP dad. I love you and miss you so much ❤ For kind and special Cosmo: Don't feel pressured to react on all comments. We know you care, that is more we can wish for.
I wanted to comment the same thing. My understanding of Finnish is very limited (learning a language in my 30s goes much slower than in my teens) but what I understand hits me harder than the English version! Marko is amazing, I would love to meet him one day and buy him a beer or something.
The song has gained even more meaning to me as I lost Dad in '21, and I grew up listening to my dad play guitar and singing. Marko is a few months older than I am and he got all the cool hair for 1966. [edit to add] There is a demo version of Poet And The Pendulum that is all Marko, from before they settled on Annette as replacement singer. Powerful in a different way than the Floor/Wembley or Annette/album version.
Thanks for the message man. Marco is really really special. Those lyrics relate heavily to endlessness, Marco's farewell song with Nightwish. I think you should check it out, if you haven't already listened to it. There is a lyric video but unfortunately no live version for obvious reasons. I just hope that someday we will see a live version of endlessness with Marco & Nightwish.
Checking the song "Isäni ääni" is also strongly recommended. That song has the exact same lyrics (in spirit, not a direct translation) but Marco sings in his mother tongue. The whole double album has every song in both Finnish and English, all written by Marko himself.
So cool! The Finnish version is great too - less blurred than this video (done here so that the words heard and the mouth movements seen aren't conflicting or distracting - smart, eh?) - "Isani Aani". His work with Northern Kings is great too! ruclips.net/video/Xc23Ul2DQDk/видео.html&ab_channel=Bluebird
i lost my father at 2005 and still this song make me cry coz its so true and i thing many ppl can relate for it our fathers live in us as long we thing and remeber them... great reaction again keep up great work
Marko is my reason for wanting to learn how to play bass 🧡 an absolutely AMAZING musician, singer, man, just… damn. Wish I Had An Angel was the first time I heard that voice, and it hooked me soooo hard to Nightwish🤟 the man is a legend
Nightwish Kiss while your lips are still red from Wembley lets you hear how soft his voice is. His work in Northern Kings is also worth a listen like Dont stop Believing and In the Air covers.
Oh Marco just drags out emotions in me with this song. Just beautiful! I have been thinking about recommending a band for a week or more lately. But I rarely do it because not many do check them out. And I just want to spread the word of this band. They are amazing! Mixing up so many different rock genres and some dance music hints too in their songs. A band from Sweden, they started doing covers on RUclips. But they have released a few albums the last couple of years. Solence in the band! :D Got 3 song for you. Brothers, the song I first heard from them. Just randomly showed up on my RUclips recommended, I was having a though day. And I just got tears in my eyes from the lyrics and music. Kind of giving some queen vibes too. Demons, from their newest album. About the demons in your mind. Always bringing up weird things you dont want to think about or random facts. Blood sweat tears, from the newest album. And the album closer. Just wow, it got everything! From my interpretation it's about them. All the work they have gone through to be where they are. You dont have to check them out. But ill just leave this comment here 8)
I have been tempted to send this song to some of my friends, but I wonder how the song would be received by a few of my friends who did not have the best father/son relationship. Also, the song could be sung by a woman, The Voice of My Mother. I had a wonderful relationship with my dad. I talk to him every day, though he's been gone since 1993. This song was powerful for me. Thanks for sharing it.
Oh, great rections as always. Thank you so very much 🤩🤘🖤. Yes, Marco has amasing singing voice and he's skils to play bass, uuuhh🤌🤌! Maybe next Stones from him?
I don't know about all you guys but for me - whenever I feel like music suddenly takes a much bigger part and priority in my life it means that there's a big change in me happening. I mostly don't know beforehand what that change is, but it is usually a big life shift or realization at the end of it. I've had three so far where there has always been one band/music that has been the main focus. First was ofcourse Nightwish (Marko being a huge part of it), second was (for some reason) game score music like Dragon Age Inquisition and the third (present) was Ghost. Music has this magical power of changing your very core. Sometimes it is music that you've heard a hundred times before but suddenly it just *makes sense*. It can be absolutely life changing.
I love Soulsborne OST's, have you ever played any Dark Souls or Bloodborne? There is some music on there that is an absolute life changer. I'm going to do a reaction showing you one of my favs. But I agree with you, There are unseen things happening all the time around us. Music...is spirit and it is alive.
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody I have! Souls games scores are beautiful. It has been a good while since I listened to it though. Might be time for another listen now over the weekend😁 Game OST are severely underrated. Gamers tend to know them ofc but it's basically unknown by others. Here in Sweden we have an annual concert (called SCORE) featuring only Game OSTs played by a full orchestra. It is the most awesome thing ever! Most of it is on youtube and they do an awesome Bloodborne suite😃
Marko is his real name, he used to use Marco as his artist name for a long time, but he has stopped using it a while back (since he finds it a bit embarassing remnant from the 80s) and these days goes by only Marko Also, imho this song is way better in the original Finnish version, so much more emotion in that one ❤
Marko is really in his own class, both as a main performer and in the background. And it was a really great season for Nighwish when Marko was a member. His skill gave Tuomasi many opportunities. And then when there were two singers, Marko and Floor, what great possibilities it opened up for Tuomas to compose. You should read the Wikipedia article about Marko. You can see how many things he has been involved in and why he is really respected among musicians in Finland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marko_Hietala Maybe you should watch a song by Marko's old band (Tarot)? Like "Tides" TAROT Tides Undead Indeed Live DVD Enhanced with Subtitles & Lyrics ruclips.net/video/GZ-4p8ZWq8o/видео.html
Thank you for reacting to this, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Do give the Finnish version Isäni ääni a listen sometime too (not necessarily on the channel).
Beautiful and melancholic, he has a song called ‘Stones’ now that one always makes me smile. Probably because of the association I make as a nonnative English speaker, somethings really do get lost/twisted in translation 😙😁
Songs like this always get to me; the ones which speak of generational things and the emotions around our parents and families. Those who built us, those we're made of. Nature and nurture together, hopefully. Not all people are so lucky, of course - but they're also made of the triumphs and the struggles of those who came before. We all are. I think we should all have pride in the luck of our stars that we are here, because life is so fleeting and a gift. Even in hard times, I always try to think of that - that so many people came before me, rose and fell before me, and I should not betray them by being so weak as to give over to my sorrow. I have so much darkness, but there is always light within that. And I remember that I carry those of my family and my friends who are not here now, I carry them and live for them, and invite them to share the moments of joy that I know they would love. We can live forever in the hearts and minds of those we touch, those we help shape, those we cherish - and even those whom we oppose. There are always lessons of beauty to learn, and there is also beauty in the moments of pain we all experience. Anyway, I've had no sleep, and this is going really emotional, so I'll stop. But songs like this always bring these thoughts to the surface, and I feel the light of my ancestors and loved ones all around me, lifting me up from the dark place I've been dwelling for far too long these days.
I love Markos voice, You have to listen to more Tarot, I'll e-mail you soon with a list of some of my favorite songs from them! No need to react to them but just enjoy them, you'll get even more understanding of his stuff through it!
It took not one but two different cancrs to kill my father, and I feel like I carry his strong Lappish voice. Me and my older brother both. While I love the fact that Marco did his record in english as well, but please (if you haven't already) listen to the Finnish version Isäni Ääni. since he singss it in Finnish it just digs deeper, you know? And if you haven't heard the rare Nightwish song "While Your Lips Are Still Red"... my dude, my man, my brother... you're in for a journey.
The whole album is great. I should never pass up the opportunity to promote it - Pyre of the Black Heart. Check it out. Marco is special - who would know he survived a botched throat operation that changed his voice?
Since it is an anniversary of the beginning of WWI, I am adding a song about the Latvian Rifflemen I listened when I have hardly any idea about Metal. I listened because of the lyrics. This is an official video, explanation and lyrics in English is under the video. There is a part played with vhistle/flute, it is a Latvian war song. ruclips.net/video/XjtRn1ZcOyU/видео.html And this concert took place on Novemebr 11, near a decent sized river.
Marko has done colabs with a lot of other bands so there is a lot to pick from but I'll give you a couple, leaving off the Ayreon stuff because you'll probably get to that separately.
Really beautiful song, love it. ❤
I got so much coming. I'm excited
Thanks for being honest and vulnerable with us and for reacting to Nightwish and Marco, they're some of my oldest music memories.
Went through the comments, but didn't see anyone mentioning couple of cool post-nightwish songs featuring Marko. He has done some amazing Black Sabbath covers too.

Worth also checking out the band Marco made most albums with Tarot. Tarot -Things that crawl at night is one of the many great songs
The message in the song is so true too. Echoes of the past are always within us all. Echoes of our childhood, our parents and our homes and families. And in turn you will pass that on to your kids and friends...
what a message
You wouldn't think that this was the kind of song that Marko would write, but here we are. Marko's range is nearly as wide as Floor's. Check out the rendition of 'Gangsta's Paradise' that he performed on the Masked Singer. The judges had no chance of identifying him as Marko ruclips.net/video/R1aLZdTzQig/видео.html
Nice reaction brother, Marko is so talented, glad you're checking out his work outside of Nightwish 🤘
Most definitely! I love that dude!!!
RIP dad. I love you and miss you so much ❤
For kind and special Cosmo:
Don't feel pressured to react on all comments. We know you care, that is more we can wish for.
much love friend
I really hoped you would have reacted to both English and Finnish version.. You get emotion even without understanding it
I will have too!
I wanted to comment the same thing. My understanding of Finnish is very limited (learning a language in my 30s goes much slower than in my teens) but what I understand hits me harder than the English version! Marko is amazing, I would love to meet him one day and buy him a beer or something.
@@nuclear.musicaddicthe doesn't drink anymore. Maybe something else. Tea and just the warm presence.
@@sateentuoksuI didn't know he had stopped drinking, it would be something non alcoholic then definitely
The song has gained even more meaning to me as I lost Dad in '21, and I grew up listening to my dad play guitar and singing.
Marko is a few months older than I am and he got all the cool hair for 1966.
[edit to add]
There is a demo version of Poet And The Pendulum that is all Marko, from before they settled on Annette as replacement singer. Powerful in a different way than the Floor/Wembley or Annette/album version.
Oh dude what memories
I prefer this in Finnish, love it both
One of my favourite Marco performances is from one of his side projects with 'Powerles Trio' - "I See Fire" (Genelec Artist Room.
Thank you for sharing this today.
Beautiful, soulful. Sending love to everyone who is missing their Father today
much love!
No doubt! Much love dude
Checking the song "Isäni ääni" is also strongly recommended. That song has the exact same lyrics (in spirit, not a direct translation) but Marco sings in his mother tongue. The whole double album has every song in both Finnish and English, all written by Marko himself.
Thank you🙏 Amazing song❤❤🙏❤😢😢😢
So cool! The Finnish version is great too - less blurred than this video (done here so that the words heard and the mouth movements seen aren't conflicting or distracting - smart, eh?) - "Isani Aani". His work with Northern Kings is great too! ruclips.net/video/Xc23Ul2DQDk/видео.html&ab_channel=Bluebird
i lost my father at 2005 and still this song make me cry coz its so true and i thing many ppl can relate for it our fathers live in us as long we thing and remeber them... great reaction again keep up great work
much love friend, I lost my dad in 2001. I feel you
Thnx for trying this out, this is a song very dear to me..
much love
I have never heard this before. Very moving. Thanks for bringing it forward.
Glad you enjoyed it
If you want to hear him sing like that in Nightwish, check out While Your Lips Are Still Red, live at Wembley. ☮️
You are a good person, Cosmic
appreciate that friend.
I mis Marko badly
Here is another Marco's song: MARKO HIETALA - Stones (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) ( ruclips.net/video/ifc3gBsM6B0/видео.html )
Marko is my reason for wanting to learn how to play bass 🧡 an absolutely AMAZING musician, singer, man, just… damn.
Wish I Had An Angel was the first time I heard that voice, and it hooked me soooo hard to Nightwish🤟 the man is a legend
From Wintersun first album "Battle Against Time" cmon you legend!
Nightwish Kiss while your lips are still red from Wembley lets you hear how soft his voice is. His work in Northern Kings is also worth a listen like Dont stop Believing and In the Air covers.
on the list
Oh Marco just drags out emotions in me with this song. Just beautiful!
I have been thinking about recommending a band for a week or more lately. But I rarely do it because not many do check them out. And I just want to spread the word of this band. They are amazing! Mixing up so many different rock genres and some dance music hints too in their songs. A band from Sweden, they started doing covers on RUclips. But they have released a few albums the last couple of years.
Solence in the band! :D
Got 3 song for you.
But ill just leave this comment here 8)
you got it, and agreed. He touches the soul
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody Thank you! 🥹 And yeah, he really does!
Appreciate you Liinukka! I got some stuff coming
Might be time for another listen now over the weekend😁
Game OST are severely underrated.
Marko is his real name, he used to use Marco as his artist name for a long time, but he has stopped using it a while back (since he finds it a bit embarassing remnant from the 80s) and these days goes by only Marko
Also, imho this song is way better in the original Finnish version, so much more emotion in that one ❤
I'm going to have to listen to the finnish version
Thank you for reacting to this song. I always cry, but they are good tears.

Maybe you should watch a song by Marko's old band (Tarot)?

I will for sure! I'm excited!
The entire album, Pyre Of The Black Heart, is awesome.
I need to grab a copy
this song gets me every time.....💯🤘
Its soooo good
Thank you for reacting to this, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Do give the Finnish version Isäni ääni a listen sometime too (not necessarily on the channel).
I'll check it out!
Beautiful and melancholic, he has a song called ‘Stones’ now that one always makes me smile. Probably because of the association I make as a nonnative English speaker, somethings really do get lost/twisted in translation 😙😁
Beautiful 🥹
love this Album
That was beautiful! Hey if you ever need to talk hit me on insta, discord, or twitter.
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the ramble XD And thanks, I may take you up on that!
I love Markos voice, You have to listen to more Tarot, I'll e-mail you soon with a list of some of my favorite songs from them! No need to react to them but just enjoy them, you'll get even more understanding of his stuff through it!
Sounds great! Email me anytime dude
Hi. You now have to listen to it in Finnish. You should react to Marko singing Wings of Darkness by Tarot from 1986.
I will for sure check it out
It took not one but two different cancrs to kill my father, and I feel like I carry his strong Lappish voice.
This is first time in a year that i'm listening this song after my father died.. I may crie
There came the tears, F**K
much love brother, I lost my dad too. All love your way.
The whole album is great. I should never pass up the opportunity to promote it - Pyre of the Black Heart. Check it out.
Marco is special - who would know he survived a botched throat operation that changed his voice?
I gotta listen to the album!
do the finnish version issani anni...hits harder
Since it is an anniversary of the beginning of WWI, I am adding a song about the Latvian Rifflemen I listened when I have hardly any idea about Metal. I listened because of the lyrics. This is an official video, explanation and lyrics in English is under the video. There is a part played with vhistle/flute, it is a Latvian war song. ruclips.net/video/XjtRn1ZcOyU/видео.html And this concert took place on Novemebr 11, near a decent sized river.
The Finnish version is really nice too.
Marko has done colabs with a lot of other bands so there is a lot to pick from but I'll give you a couple, leaving off the Ayreon stuff because you'll probably get to that separately.
Powerless Trio "Holy Diver" ruclips.net/video/j5X03tHmKZg/видео.html Dio cover with a western feel.
Northern Kings " Take On Me" ruclips.net/video/GkHJRrMwmSQ/видео.html A-ha cover for eurovision.
dude...take on me!!! say less!!!
React to While your lips are still red by Nightwish. A soft song where Marko sings lead. Or react to Stones by Marko Hietala to witness his humour. Or react to Wings of Darkness by Tarot. The band Marco and his brother founded. Or...
There's quite an unfortunate typo in the lyrics. It should be "Sing my son and I'll be with you". (song -> son).
❤️❤️👌
The Finnish version sounds better even if we don't understand it.
Listen to Isäni ääni.
How about Floor and Marco singing ave maria at the heavy christmas annual show in Finland ruclips.net/video/q1UJHpyFQn0/видео.html&ab_channel=NightwishArena Here's another one for you ... Marco on the Finnish masked singer 2020, he won by the way... here is Gangstas Paradise ruclips.net/video/R1aLZdTzQig/видео.html&ab_channel=Sanni... He truly is a special person and character. Another favorite marco moment for me is him singing Sabbath's planet Caravan as a lullaby to Jukka's newborn ruclips.net/video/-XBZutbxSf4/видео.html&ab_channel=elfer8040Pat

This will probably be an unpopular comment but here it is. I find the Nightwish solo projects underwhelming. What makes these musicians great is Nightwish, together they are one of the greatest bands of all time
