As a UK Car Vlogger for the last 18 months, I've been using the Insta360 range of cameras to achieve otherwise impossible tracking shots... A lot of people have asked "how does the camera move all by itself" - well, my secret is - the Insta360 One X and Insta360 One X2! All these techniques also apply to the Insta360 One R (with 360 mod).

In this video, I show you my setup and the kinds of shots it has helped me achieve.
The Insta360 One X2 360 camera makes it appear as though the camera moves all by itself inside the cars that we drive. How do we achieve this? How do you get drone-like shots of your car without a drone - using the 3m Extended Carbon Fiber Invisible Selfie Stick?! How do we get so many camera angles, with just one camera?!

Wow! Thank you Elliott! You're too kind! I hope more people start to see the videos as you do. Really appreciate the supportive comments dude!
Great, informative video might have to look at the x2 to go alongside the GoPro. What mic set up do you use for the exhaust, I always either get too much wind noise or not enough exhaust?
That's something I'm still trying to figure out. This was the inbuilt mic. I adjusted the audio properties in Final Cut Pro, and masked it with music... But, I've got something in mind that I'm going to try soon. Thanks for watching! Hope you check out some of our other vlogs 😁

You sir are my new HERO!
I was trying to figure out how to ramp up my car reviews and road trip videos, and was wanting to retire my GoPro hero 8. I had tried a Hero 9, and Hero 10 and just couldnt get the shots I wanted. My Insta360 One X2 arrived today. Ill be doing an unboxing of it, and then start playing with it by mirroring a lot of what you have shown in this video.
Finally I can use one camera to get a lot of dynamic shots to use in my final edits.
Ha ha! Awesome! Glad to have given you some new inspiration. I welcome a shout out once you apply these techniques 🤙
Since this video I've used the isolated exposure less as it's usually too different except in rare circumstances. Do experiment with it before trying to make a full video, especially to get the exposure right and for the audio to be good enough. Audio has been one of the biggest challenges.

Fantastic video, very nicely made. 👍. With the convoy example, it really does make a case for the ultimate dash cam !
Thank you! When the tech can stay on for extended periods and with enough storage, it could be the direction dashcams go in. At the moment, at 5.7K for the 360 view and with the camera overheating with extended usage on a hot sunny day in the windscreen, it's not quite ready for that yet... But one day soon I'm sure.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing!

@@sportzntouring just watched it, great vid.
Great video! I'm going to try this for my next travel video.
In my initial experiments, (Insta360 X3) with the X3 mounted as you show, horizontally & in line with the pillars. Looks great, but in the Insta360 Studio, it wants to turn as the car turns. How do I turn off that "feature"? I like the fixed camera look that you demonstrate and a keyframe doesn't seem to do it. Ah ....I found it! I rewatched your video and you did say to "lock the direction" which is located in the Stabilization Type.
Thanks for sharing your great tips!

I've really wanted to do the trailing car shot as well and finally got the 3 m selfie stick. A few questions, how far did you extend the selfie stick? Did the stick bend at all? The rated load is 300 g and I am a bit worried it will bend. What window mount did you use? I am comparing window mount vs magnetic mount. Thanks, and great video!
Thank you! I used the Delkin Fat Gecko Triple Mount. The pole was at about 2.5m. there was some forward and lateral swing in the mount so I used three cable ties to limit forward and lateral swing. Of course, the glass and suction mounts were clean and dry before mounting. Hope that helps

thank you … awesome!
Great video! Have you used the Insta360 ONE R for external footage, if so what was your solution to capturing sound without wind distortion? Thanks.
Thanks! We've tried a few things. In this video we used the One X2. I then reduced the wind noise as much as possible in post.
Since then, we've tried a few different options, the best seems to be a separate audio recording via a wired lav mic with a "wind muff" plugged into my phone.
In this other video, we used audio from the Go2:
ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
I should add that I then sync the audio with the main video in my editing software (FCPX). Hope that helps.
So thats how you get these incredible 3rd person views! I can't believe you capture it with a kinda car selfie stick! Impressive! And it even covers up the views of said mount, sweet!
Thanks! Well in this video, the mount is still visible but harder to see because of the dark windscreen. But, I actually erased the mount completely in the edit of this other video: ruclips.net/video/b2kLs42fCkg/видео.html

And here's another update on how we rig up the 360 camera: ruclips.net/user/shortsGHMAOJanTqM?feature=share
do you uses an external mic for your drone like follow shot video take?
In this video, no. It's just the built in mic on the camera. There's a lot of wind noise which I tried to reduce in post. I also hid some of it with music.
We're trying different external mic setups to improve sound. We've not found the best one yet but will post more when we do.
Great tutorial really well explained, the shots look awesome. I've just ordered an Insta360 one r twin edition, going to film some test drives.😃

When you say “flatten” out a particular angle, what editing parameter affects that ?
Thanks for watching. To flatten the image, I mean reduce the fisheye effect In the Insta360 studio, set a keyframe, then reduce the value for Distortion Control and then reduce the FOV Control. Adjust these to get the look you like.
Great tech and well used. Thank you for sharing!

Delkin Devices Fat Gecko Triple Suction Camera Mount is that the brand you where using ?
It was, with some help from cable ties to limit lateral and longitudinal swing... but I've got a whole new mount setup which is lower profile, more rigid and easier to mask out completely. It's a rig using a few components. Too hard to explain here.... I hope to make a video on this soon.

Great Video showing the 360 One X2.. For the Audio fix I’m using a Zoom H1n with a Hollyland wireless lavaliere mic.
Audio is crisp.( issue with 360 is a audio MHz thing) You can easily sync your audio in Premiere Pro. Look up a video. Hope this helps.
Thanks for watching. As I explain in the video, I used to record audio separately. Final Cut Pro syncs it easily too. The problem was having multiple devices to start recording while vlogging at 70mph when on an interesting part in the middle of a 2 hour drive... Many moments lost due to the audio record button forgotten to be pressed, or I thought it started but it didn't actually start... Leaving unusable audio from the camera. Hence my setup. The Lav mics just stay on the whole time.
Editing overheads are lower too. The timestamp on the exported video is at the time of export, not recording time. So matching up the audio file to the video file is less straight forward.
If there was a one-press solution that reliably started recording on the camera and audio recorder simultaneously, that would be ideal.
You may also enjoy this video showing how I erase the suction mount: ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
Do you think the fat gecko stealth or fat gecko single could be used as an alternative to the suction cups you are using?
I've used Fat Gecko mounts and they aren't even close to having the same level of firmness to the suction on the car. I personally wouldn't use them in this application.
Watching this video is absolutely amazing.
Thank you 🙏🏾

I dont know if final cut pro has audio waveform sync like davinci resolve does but you could record audio seperately and waveform sync it with the video.
Final Cut Pro does that too, pretty seamlessly. I used to record the audio separately, as mentioned in the video, and do just that... This has a couple of issues. 1. I'm vlogging in my car. I don't record the entire two hour drive - that's not practical. I only record parts that are interesting. I can't plan when that is in a convoy of random cars. So it means switching on two devices, while driving hoping to capture something that's happening right there and then... Instead I now just switch on one device (I leave the mics on for the whole drive). 2. On a two hour drive I'll record up to 10-15 sequences. Matching up the video and audio files to then sync them only adds to the editing overheads. So, good audio, on one camera saves time. Thanks for watching and the comments are appreciated 🤙
Hello, I bought the triple mount, what is the name of the adapter followed by the triple mount, the one that holds the extendable 360 pole?
Hey, thanks for watching! I didn't need an adapter. The pole has a tripod thread that you just twist on.
We've got a whole new suction mount rig... and we do something pretty cool with it... ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
whats the mount you used to put it for the drone shot? I just got the camera and got the extended selfie stick but don’t know what I need to mount it to the back of my car
I used the delkin fat ghecko triple mount but I don't recommend it. I had to carefully secure it with cable ties and even then I had to accelerate, decelerate and turn slower to minimise movement. I've got a new rig that has a few elements, too much to explain in a comment and I plan to make a video on that soon. Watch this space. And thanks for watching 😁
We've completely changed up the mount! We've just released a 2022 update! And you won't want to miss this one... ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
And, here's an update on how I set up the camera: ruclips.net/user/shortsGHMAOJanTqM?feature=share
For how long can one record?
I wanted to vlog when I visit home for my own memories I was hoping this thing can run long enough :) like when on trips etc and not just short bursts, the 150 degree how long can that record?
On the One X2, it's up to an hour on a single battery, subject to SD card storage. But we've rarely recorded for longer than 15 minutes. Exporting reframed video of much more than that can come with other challenges in the device you're exporting on, like running out of storage, that means we sometimes trim the video before trying to export.
Our main reason for using it is because we're vloggers and it means we get the multiple camera angles and panning shots from one camera in unplanned situations. It's hard to say if it will meet your needs without knowing more.
wher do you buy a suction cups for out of the car?
Hey, thanks for watching. More on suction mounts explained here: ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html

@@sportzntouring That 3-pronged mount on your back window looks secure. Is that different than the insta360 car mount?

So what suction mount did you buy for the selfie stick to mount on it and what specific selfie stick was it ? I want to do those drone like shots but can’t find any info on what specific items I need to make sure it all fits properly together.
Thanks, I'm getting lots of questions on this, I probably should make a video just on mounts...
The suction mount I used was the Fat Gecko Triple Mount. I had to use cable ties to limit longitudinal movement on the ball joint though. So, I'm actually looking for a better solution.
The monopod is the Insta360 Extended Edition Selfie Stick (new version) which seems to currently be out of stock...

I've just added links in the description to all the Insta360 accessories and mounts used in this video. I've provided the name of the triple mount so you can find your best supplier in your region.
@@sportzntouring I have the NEW extended stick. Did you find a better suction mount and what was your top speed with the extended stick? I wished their new Roadie controller would work with the X2.
@@Carl_in_AZ I do have a new mount setup but it's probably something I'll need to explain in a video. I wasn't going fast as the the mount allowed too much lateral play. But, wide angle lenses create the illusion of speed so you don't need to go fast for the video to look like it's fast.
Our whole suction mount rig has changed... We've just released a 2022 update! And you won't want to miss this one... ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
Great video... I'm trying to get similar shots but can't seem to get the exposure correct between the 2 lenses. Any chance of a tutorial on configuring and setting up the X2 for these type shots?
I'll be honest, I've had similar trouble. I've found myself only using isolated mode in very poor lighting. Otherwise I leave isolated mode off and try to set the exposure for the best compromise between interior and exterior lighting. It's trial and error given the lighting conditions you find yourself with. I don't think I'll be making a video just on that as that's not what this channel is really about but I may mention it in an update I've got coming on how I've improved the exterior mount. Thanks for watching.

Nice vid man! How’d you make it zoom in and out when accelerating like that?
Before, I'd use the iPad App. Now, I use the desktop Insta360 studio and use keyframes to set the zoom levels between acceleration and braking.
You can see more of this in this video:

@sportZnTouring what mounts are you using?
In car, just the suction mount available on the Insta360 website. For the monopod external shot, I used a Fat Gecko Triple Mount.
I've just added links to all the Insta360 accessories and mounts used in this video. I've provided the name of the triple mount so you can find your best supplier in your region.
We've completely changed the mount we're using... We've just released a 2022 update! And you won't want to miss this one... ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
Very nice video ,what mount to u used to put invisble stick?
Thank you .
Thanks 👍
I used the Fat Gecko Triple mount with some cable ties to restrict movement on the ball joint. There may be more secure options
Also come for adapter to put insta on the stick???or just go pro adapter .
Thanks for you help
Can u also send me u insta to follow and see u work ,where do u from?
Both have a standard tripod bolt thread. You just screw the pole onto the Gecko mount, then screw the camera onto the pole.
Our insta and other socials are all in the description 👍
@sportzntouring
How do you set different exposure to the different lenses?
In the App, you can set exposure to "Isolated". You can't choose the levels of exposure individually, it's all automatic. It only works in certain lightly conditions though. Otherwise it's too bright on one and too dark in the other
awesome

What suction mount did he use for the rear window at the end of video???
I used the Fat Gecko triple mount, but I don't recommend it. I had to use cable ties to secure the selfie stick. It had a lot of sway. I'm making a video in the next couple of weeks to show my new setup. Watch this space 😁

So..Can I use it for a long road trip,is it reliable?
I tend to only record in short segments, rarely longer than about 25 mins at a time.
The battery lasts about an hour and can be charged while running via a USB-C cable. But, like any camera like this, if it's exposed to a lot of heat, it can stop recording. That's only happened to me when it was a hot day, the sun was beating down onto the windscreen while the car was parked and I'd left the camera in the windscreen... Then 15 mins into the recording it showed a warning and stopped the recording.
Depends on what you want it for I guess.
hi my friend try a mic called instamic, work with BT and you dont need all those cable and wire.

Would be nice if you had a v-8 engine in that car to get that great muscle car sound like maybe a Boss 429 mustang, but then if we had that kind of money might want to be doing something else. . great job.
Ahhhh... I like the VQ sound... If I was to get a v8 I'd want a high-revving flat-plane-crank screamer... Not really into the low rumble of the typical American V8s.
Hi i wanna try the thrid person view (7:25)on my car too,but i scare the stick will broke or fly off when car in high speed .what is the speed limit and how to set up ?If you do more video about it i will very appreciate
Yeah, it's a risk and why it took me so long to do the shot. I kept the speed below 45mph. I don't know what speed the selfie stick can hold but the biggest issue is the suction mount. I'll see if I can include more in a future video. We've got a backlog of videos to edit so might not be for a while.

@@sportzntouring I was referring to end of this same video, just watched this other one, very nice edit!!! I just realized that the best way to complete remove the "bended" selfie stick (because of the weight of the camera) its pointing to left and right instead of up and down how is normally showed so the bend its always invisible :) cool!!!
@@alexurizar that can work depending on the scene, but the stitch is then in the middle of the shot. This can leave artefacts. But it might work. Let us know how you get on.

I tried it inside the car but I get either a washed out (too bright) exterior or a too dark interior. How can you get both exposed properly?
Nevermind I think i found the setting :)
@@gbessone we've found that when there's low light, the isolated setting helps. When there's lots of light, the auto setting is the best.
Great video tutorial. Lots of helpful tips.. especially the one with positioning the camera with the A pillar. So important for exposure differences in and out of the car.
Thank you. Experiment with the isolated exposure... On bright days it can struggle to find the balance. If it's very sunny I now tend to leave the isolated exposure off and try to find the right compromise with the same exposure compensation.
@SPORTZNTOURING Thank you. Ill try this tip.
@@sportzntouring Also aligning with the A pillars hides the stitch lines. Brilliant!
Indeed! It makes them much harder to see. Because I use the stitch line calibration features in the desktop Insta360 Studio, I can often make them largely undetectable most of the time. It also has a chromatic calibration which can help when using isolated exposure as it tries to blend the exposure differences. Sometimes though, that can make it look worse. It's a bit trial and error.
Using this in a very similar way!
Awesome! It's a great piece of kit!

7:07 Would you please tell me the size of the car back mount size and the suction pad diameter? I’m going to buy a mount like that
First of all, thanks for watching! The mount is the Delkin Fat Gecko Triple Mount. There's issues with it moving so I secured it with zip ties, as seen in the video. Hope that helps!
@@sportzntouring Thank you very much, I will try to find it, very good video, I enjoy the great technic
@@leeyasuo hey, no problem. Take care with this as if really isn't ideal with the extended selfie stick at higher speeds. Lots of lateral movement unless you secure it carefully. Test it away from public roads.
I've got a new setup now, that I'll share in a future video 🤙
@@sportzntouring Thanks for the suggestion, I am looking forward to your new setup video~

How about for security when you are not actively in the car?
The camera only records for between 30-60 mins on one charge and it doesn't loop or have any auto start/stop features. It's not designed to be dash cam, only a creative tool. I hope that helps answer your question. Thanks for watching 👊🏾
Everyone’s been trying to get me to switch to the insta360. I’m still not convinced and after seeing that audio mess….Im going to keep my GoPro max
You don't need the wireless mics, it's only if you want better audio quality in-car. I watched a couple of your videos just now and the in-car audio is hard on the ears. You sound far away and the background noise and hiss is quite high on your in-car GoPro footage. If that's ok for your content, that's cool. Personally, I want the in-car conversation to be clear and as crisp as possible.
Hopefully you took some other ideas from the video. There's another video coming soon that you'll like though... Ideas in it that I think will benefit some of your content even with the GoPro so watch this space. Either way, thanks for watching. Appreciate the comment too 🤙
Here's an update on the receiver for the wireless lav mics... Plus, something we know you'll be interested in... A vanishing suction mount: ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html
That last video, how do you get the affect of the car driving faster than the camera. Looks like it's taking off then the camera catches up. Hope I explained that well enough 😂
Back then, I used zooming in and out via the record button in the iPad app. Now, I use keyframes in the the Insta360 Studio desktop app. Keyframes are touched upon in this video, among other things: ruclips.net/video/lolPY-mHjws/видео.html

Whats a windscreen? What's a gear lever?
Ahhh the English terms may confuse folks more used to American vocabulary. In American, it's a windshield (glass window in front of the driver) and a gear stick (a lever used to shift gears manually). Is that helpful?
Hey, the link to DREAM GARAGE AUCTIONS is broken btw
Thanks! Fixed!
I tried that follow shot on my motorcycle and the wind pushes the selfie stick down it sucks
What mount did you use? Have you watched Max Wrist's videos?
How do you not see the stick?
Magic! No, really the stick gets lost in the stitch line between the two lenses. But you can still see some of it the further away it is due to flex in the stick... Plus you also see the camera mount... Except in this video: ruclips.net/video/b2kLs42fCkg/видео.html
