    At around 10:00 i think Paul meant it more like a dude created a great picture of something BUT also yeeted a kid off a bridge on a different occasion. Not as in "he made a great picture of a kid being yeeted of a bridge".
    Basically like having 2 stances:
    1. saying Leni Riefenstahl was part of nazi propaganda, therefore everything associated with Riefenstahl is automatically and unconditionally tainted forever and can not or should not be used in any context, except in a bad context.
    or
    2. Yes Riefenstahl did nazi propaganda and this film was part of it, BUT she single-handedly revolutionized visuals in films and developed groundbreaking methods. We can appreciate the pure aesthetics in the context of art and incorporate it into our own art. All without forgetting about or downplaying her part nazi propaganda.
    These were the 2 "fronts".

      On more serious business... I know exactly what you're saying and I agree.
      I mean... it's unfortunate to say but technology advances the most during time of war. Some of the stuff we use everyday was developed for war to begin with. The computer I'm writing this on as an example. Should we all give up computers? Everyone driving a Volkswagen should give up their car because in WW2 they were producing weapons for the Nazis, right? I don't see anyone doing it. As always, everyone talks, until it comes to their own personal life, then they act like it's different. Human hypocrisy.

    I was waiting for this reaction. I'm so agree with what you said - everything in the world depends on our personal perception. We see what we want to see. And I believe that there are two main functions of art - aesthetic and provocative, but provocative in a way "it made me think about this problem". And I love that Rammstein always combines both - they can create an interesting picture, make a theatrical live shows etc., but they always give some deeper sense to it. If some piece of art doesn't make you THINK, then it's just a picture.

    I've heard from different interviews how bad it got. Like newspapers headlining: "Hitler directed the new Rammstein video", or Till's daughter getting asked at school if her father played in a nazi band. No matter how much they denied having nazi ties or sympathies, the media still wouldn't belive them. I don't think it really calmed down before they released the song Links-2-3-4, really making a statement.
    And yeah, they've been accused of nazism ever since their first album, where they got accused of portraying themselves as the arien, or "master", race. So no wonder they've had a complicated relationship with the media! As Oliver (I think) says in one interview is that the fans understand them, but unfortunately it's not them writing about the band. Flake seems very relaxed and at ease in the later years, but in earlier interviews he's always on the defense during interviews.

    There are several things about this, and the first one, honestly, Rammstein doesn't do something without planning it, Germans are not like that 😂. The other thing is that in Germany even today it is difficult to talk about the Nazis and Hitler, imagine before.
    .
    Sometimes it happens with Rammstein that his fans make a thousand theories, looking for the hidden message and in reality the band is quite simple and honest, they throw things at your face, they yell at you, but we are always looking for a background to everything, it can be so simple as the title of the song which is "stripped", the Olympics were played like this in the nude and German history is something that cannot be forgotten or hidden, that is, they are reminding you of that part of their history like this, naked . From that point on, it is up to each person and each mind to understand what they please and give their judgments to their liking. That's what I think. Greetings and thanks for your video 👌🏼🔥

  • @StineFL
    @StineFL 3 года назад +7

    For me I think the subject of separating the art from the artist is very difficult. I love this video because it is so surreal and artsy, but it is very complicated. For me it both depends on what I know of the subject, and how I interpret the intension of the use of that material. In this case I didn't know about the background of the clips before after I'd fallen for the video, and I know that however provocative Rammstein try to be, they never want to be associated with nazis or any actual harm or hate. The original film was meant as a propoganda film, but that was never obvious to me in the beginning. I saw Olympic performances by people, and not only by white men.
    Still, after having learned about the original, it does muddle the waters a bit, and I wasn't sure at first where I stood regarding the video. I have however decided to fully embrace it. It's like you said, hate the person, not the art, and rather use the knowledge of it to have interesting discussions like these 😁
    It's the same with a couple of their other songs with tough lyrics, like Weißes Fleisch, Spiel mit Mir, Hallelujah and especially Rammstein and Wiener Blut, as it's based on actual events and people.

    • @xsezz
      @xsezz  3 года назад +6

      Yeah, I hear you.
      Technically, if we were able to think like robots, art should have no limits. Creations should have no limit. While it looks good on paper, life is way more complicated and it is not always possible. As I mention in this video... for me everything goes, but I can see how some people affected by the "art" could be against it. I guess it's all about each person's limits.
      I have no involvement with original video. I'm not affected by it in anyway, so I don't care. People who are part of those events are affected by it. If I knew any of personally, I would have a different response to the source out of respect.
      Artistic freedom is a whole can of worms... literally everything can be offensive to someone, so you have to draw a line at some point... but just like the offensive material the line to be drawn is different for everyone. It's complicated.

    • @StineFL
      @StineFL 3 года назад +5

      @@xsezz I totally agree. That's probably why I can endorse it even though it's pretty complicated.
      I think being able to have discussions about problematic subjects is way better than cancel culture however, cause if you just cancel something you just hide the problem, you don't deal with it. I also think that there should not be a limit to art, as long as no one got hurt in the making of it. A great example of this is the film Cannibal Holocaust. When I first saw it I was really impressed. I'd heard a lot of crazy things about it, but when I saw it it was very different than what I'd expected. Basically, for those who haven't seen it, it's about this horrible documentary crew that goes missing after setting out to film a tribe of cannibals in the South American jungle, and surprise, surprise - they get eaten. Looking at the retrieved footage we see that they were horrible people, with no regards to neither the tribe or animals. I found the movie and the message really good, and even made a video of it myself. Then later on I learned how it was backstage - and how both people and animals were mistreated (or brutally killed in the animals' case) in real life for the sake of showing how terrible the CHARACTERS were. How ironic. Anyways, now I am really conflicted. I really hate how the movie was made, and I do in no way endorse it. I will never recommend it to anyone and if the subject comes up I will be sure to share what I know about it.
      Yet I can't just forget about it either, as the initial impact still lingers in the background. I have decided for the time being keeping my video up, even though I know I shouldn't. So I'm really conflicted. This is when I struggle to draw the line, and I just get stuck in this land of "I'm uncomfortable, but I don't know what to do with it".
      On the other hand, I can still enjoy The Shining, even though I later heard that Stanley Kubrick gave actress Shelley Duval a nervous breakdown during filming, being so horrible towards her. So I'm super hypocritical 😂 I guess it comes down to that on the Shining it is hidden in behind the scenes, while in Cannibal Holocaust it's right up in your face.

    • @xsezz
      @xsezz  3 года назад +7

      @@StineFL I don't agree with cancel culture either. It's so... self righteous. People become judge, jury and executioners all in one go just because they decided to do so, no matter the subject.
      Anyways, about the movie Cannibal Holocaust, I have not seen it but I heard about the behind the scenes stories. Like you said you appreciate it and are conflicted at the same time. But... that's alright. Not everything has to go our way. Not everything has to please us. There are things out there that we don't like for different reasons. That's ok, that's life. Not everything is perfect. It's ok to be conflicted. It's alright to disagree with certain subjects. It's ok to feel these emotions... it builds us stronger, I believe.
      Also, Stanley Kubrick was insane in achieving perfection but his movies certainly are special. Again, art vs artist. :)

    _but_ unfortunately she made the movie(s) for the wrong guys. although she always claimed after the third reich, that she was 'just an artist', her movies in fact were an important instrument in the nazi's propaganda (e.g. some of the embarrassing moments for germany of olympie '36 were just not included; they couldn't avoid showing jesse owens though). when you make a deal with the devil, you're likely to end up on the wrong side.

    The Pictures are only one part of the Video. Another part is the Music, another part is the Cut, the Color, the Special effects and so on. If you dam one tiny Part of it, do you dam the whole Package?
    Or in other Words: Tomorrow a random guy appears and finds out, the Sesame Street intro has the exact same Cutting pattern like lets say a Northkorean Soap about the Kim Family, did it make the Sesame Street a Nothkorean Propagandavideo?
    Some has inconvenient feelings about it. Ok, his Problem. But should he poisoned all other Views of all other People onto this Video with his Paranoia?

      I agree 100% with you. What you're saying is logical. But believe you me, there's people out there thinking exactly like in your example. There's people out there who would "cancel" Sesame Street because of a NK soap intro. It makes no sense, it has no base in logic but they would still do it. Human stupidity has no limits. Thankfully, most of these people seem to live on the internet and are a vocal minority only. Still annoying though.

      @@xsezz It's a 2 parts movie ^^ I don't remember exactly how many hours of material there was, but it was more than 100 hours of film for sure, and it takes 2 years to make the "final cut" (1938). Needless to say it was a massive work.

      @@lacrichat Wow! 100 hours! Dayum... they didn't mess around back in the day! Then again if it is Olympics footage, it makes sense.
