Erich Honnecker was General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany and ruler of the GDR for about 18 years. After the reunification he was put to trial for violation of human rights but as he suffered from cancer he was freed and lived and died in Chilean exile. Naturally a very prominent person of that era in Germany.

For two days they took Live Interviews with the press without intervention from the police. At some point a couple of Reporters even traveled on a hijacked Bus with the criminals. It all ended with three people dying. I don't know if it's actually related to the video but it for sure was a pretty big scandal and got people questioning the role of the media.

In the summer of 1988 there was a hostage crisis in Gladbeck, Germany where the press surrounded the criminals car and filmed the a girl with a gun against her head. She was taken as a hostage earlier when the robbers hijacked a bus and was shot and killed later on during a car chase. This video always reminds me of this event.
I must disagree about what they say about communicating to the audience. They DO say goodbye, and they do want the audience to call back during the intro for Bück Dich xD (And one later performance, from 2019)
