The song is about a bank robbery and a kidnapping in which the hostage takers and the press undertook a media theater that lasted for days through the Ruhr area in Germany in which the hostage was ultimately shot by the kidnappers. It was called “the Gladbeck drama”. A real incident.

The song is about the ambivalence, the pretension, the intrusiveness and the power of the media, which sell their reality to the masses, indoctrinate any reality and thus in any direction, turn the criminal into a hero and vice versa.

The building they filmed in was the former State Council Building for East Germany. Which is the country that the members of Rammstein are from.

I assume the inspiration for the song and the video was a true crime. In 1988 there was a bank heist in Germany (Gladbeck), after which the perpetrators fled and took hostages. During the escape, journalists conducted several interviews with the perpetrators and obstructed police work. After 54 hours of flight through almost half of Germany, the perpetrators were caught. Two hostages and a policeman were killed. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate.
In the video Rammstein seems to provoke media attention by the heist, not primarely to steal money. The line "Wir wollen in Beifall untergehen." (We want to drown in applause.) indicates it. The live version of this song (e.g. Ich will - live from Hurricane Festival 2016) shows a great involvement of the audiance.
