AC/DC, INXS, Cold Chisel, The Angels, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo, The Baby Animals and many more great local bands emerged from this system. The music was all about entertaining the punters because if you didn't do that quickly they showed their displeasure. This is why Australian bands from this period are best seen live. However, in the early 1990s most Pubs & Clubs put in Poker Machines for entertainment and killed this pathway for musicians to hone their music and this unique style disappeared from our landscape.
It's revving again in Newcastle. My son is very much involved. Strong support from local government, business and venues. Immense local talent, energetically mentored by the musos from the classic pub rock period. It's exciting.

So Bow River is sung by Ian Moss who is the Lead Guitarist out of Cold Chisel, in this performance with added vocals by Jimmy. Ian is an Australian legend in his own right with a number of solo albums to his credit and many videos on You Tube. He is also one of Australia's best guitarists with his own guitar style that many guitarists in the 80's and 90's were influenced by. And he has a great voice as well.

If you've listened to Joe Bonamassa, two of his daughters are in his backing vocal trio and have performed with him for six or seven years, perhaps longer. Legendary blues musician Chris Wilson, featured here on the harnonica , sadly died five years ago, on January 16 2019. Chris was also an accomplished saxophonist and vocalist too.
Took me back to the mid 70's watching the B/W portable TV in my bedroom while the oldies were watching the new Rank Arena colour in the lounge. Of course this track wasn't released until Circus Animals came out in early 82 and I had upgraded to colour by then. Yes Australian music is very much influenced by American blues rock or British pop and we probably developed our own sounds by mixing the two. Have a listen to Breakfast at Sweethearts by Chisel, its a great song. Cheers.
This performance illustrates how great musicians display their expertise as they grow older especially with this song which was usually the last one in their set. If you see earlier versions of this song, you will see how they have improved this performance , in particular, by increasing the participation of the harmonica player, David Blight. He was not one of the usual Cold Chisel members, but made guest appearances on some of their songs such as this one. I believe he was also on Khe Sanh as well. In any case, I believe his presence in this song really pushes this version to the highest levels. I'm glad you're a Jimmy fan - he has certainly brought so much to the world of rock music in Oz and he is world class. I would recommend his album 30:30 Hindsight where he redid versions of many of the songs from his 30 year solo career. I think you may have already seen one of the tracks in "Stone Cold" with Joe Bonamassa. I would recommend you watch the video of another song from the album called "Lay Down Your Guns" with the Oz band "The Living End". I'm not sure why because they are great. One is called Misfits about youth homelessness. They other is called Letter from Allen. The version I love is live from Rockpalast Germany back is the 80's. I've watched the whole concert in 1982 many many times. Then there was a band called The Easybeats. Jimmy covered one of their songs called Good Times with INXS. This band were Australia's answer to the Beatles, with front man Stevie Wright. Jimmy Barnes takes a lot of influences from America too, but more from the Sam and Dave era I'd say. An American beauty who came to Australia at the age of 16 and has stayed would be Marcia Hines. A band who sounds like The Eagles would be The Stars. Also from Adelaide where Jimmy landed as an immigrant from Glasgow, Scotland. Sadly one of their band members passed, Andy Durant RIP. He was a great song writer...He played guitar and usually was back up singer to their lead vocalist Mick Pearling. The only full song sang by him was West is the Way...... PS what Aussie bands had to do to make it, was sing live in the pubs and clubs, and travel a lot. Chisel did that so well. Jimmy was only 16 and a half when he started....and he's still going strong 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Absolutely Tonia. I think you absolutely nailed the “Country Music Vibe” because all these bands toured through rural Australia back in the 80’s. Especially to Tamworth (Australia’s version of Nashville). John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes and all the rest have connections to Tamworth. Keith Urban. Russell Crowe. Kasey Chambers. The Wiggles were previously “The Cockroaches”. It’s all connected in one way or another to “Country Music”. Ian Moss played just down the road a couple of months ago.

Yeah it’s fair to say that 80s Oz rock has a different feel to the writing style. Definitely some “earthier” feels like you might find in country, but that’s just a small part of the story. Almost as if there’s a special connection that we have to this country and it can’t be explained easily, but it is instantly felt and recognised.
Great reaction, you should come Down Under to experience some live music 🎶. I first heard Jimmy play at the ski fields in Queenstown New Zealand you would love it.
The best thing about Chisel is that their songs are very diverse in style, and that's because they all wrote the songs. Bow River was written by Ian Moss (who sang it). Don Walker - the keyboard player - writes a lot of their songs, and he covers many genres. Steve Prestwich (RIP) the drummer wrote great ballads. Jimmy Barnes writes... well... repetitive songs. He should stick to singing in my opinion.
Yeah there has been some goodies over the years, a lot of Aussie bands and singers don't or didn't get the credit they deserve. So reactions like yours and people from other country's are nice to see. @@stuwhiteman3810 When I was a teenager, 2 of my favorite bands were Savage Garden (who I still listen to all the time) and Silverchair. It’s such a shame that here in the states we missed out on so many other amazing artists from Australia and other countries. But I absolutely love learning about all of them now. I’m not sure why other creators don’t reply much but I love chatting with everyone in the comments 😊 Sometimes it’s overwhelming, sometimes it can take hours or days, but I try to reply as much as I can. ❤️

Hey if you like Chisel, have a listen to this soundtrack ' v=AsPJ6RlkQr8 ' written by Don Walker for a movie you've probably never heard of in the USA. You'll hear the similarity to the Chisel style I'm sure. I first heard Chisel in 1975 when they did a lunchtime concert at my high-school before they became famous, the entry fee was like 0.60 cents, seems like a joke nowadays but it's true.
I really don’t want to be critical, you had a nice visceral reaction to the song but I’d advise that storey telling is very international because it is cultural. Everyone has stories. And everyone has songs. Actually Springsteen ripped off a lot of his “shtick” from Val Morrison but with less nuance - his stories are important as well but I think that most in the western world give the storey telling prize to the Irish. But everyone’s story is important in itself and shouldn’t be the lackey of someone else, especially a conglomerate of media heavyweights who generally are in America.
Ok, I understand that. However I was speaking of country music specifically. They have a different way of storytelling. I grew up with it. I know it very well. And as someone who listens to all genres, I can tell the difference. It’s a pretty well known fact that country music is known for this. Not to downplay anyone else, I’m purely speaking about the fact that those 2 have the same way of storytelling.
I disagree to it sounding American. This was born from a very hard drinking, working class pub culture. Pre internet, we had a class rock music that was constantly on tour nation wide. Bands like acdc were also born from this working class pub culture You will find a rabbit hole of A grade rock from bands little known outside of australia
We had all of that here in the states too. Bands would (and still do) play in bars and pubs etc. That’s how they grow a following but it’s sadly not the same anymore.
@ToniaElkins I think the music industries from both nations, and even the British music industry to boot, back in the day, pushed their local talents through the radio stations. There was a global industry, Australia's size restricted its outreach and hence became little known outside of Australia. I agree that many artists started in pubs, the radio stations filled the pubs and sold the albums, our top artists couldn't make enough money with such a small population exposure, so they stayed in pubs and worked the scene. It was Awesome! at a. Consumer level 😀

Yeah there has been some goodies over the years, a lot of Aussie bands and singers don't or didn't get the credit they deserve. So reactions like yours and people from other country's are nice to see. Also a lot of reactors don't reply so thanks for taking the time as I noticed you have replied to most of the comments thank you.
@@stuwhiteman3810 When I was a teenager, 2 of my favorite bands were Savage Garden (who I still listen to all the time) and Silverchair. It’s such a shame that here in the states we missed out on so many other amazing artists from Australia and other countries. But I absolutely love learning about all of them now.
I’m not sure why other creators don’t reply much but I love chatting with everyone in the comments 😊 Sometimes it’s overwhelming, sometimes it can take hours or days, but I try to reply as much as I can. ❤️

Some made it big AC/DC, Little River Band, Air Supply, Bee Gees, John Farnham and the like. But there are a lot more that you may not have heard of so looking forward to perhaps some of the more obscure that would be fun, anyway I don't want to tell you what you should listen to that is your choice. Hey if you like Chisel, have a listen to this soundtrack ' v=AsPJ6RlkQr8 ' written by Don Walker for a movie you've probably never heard of in the USA. You'll hear the similarity to the Chisel style I'm sure. I first heard Chisel in 1975 when they did a lunchtime concert at my high-school before they became famous, the entry fee was like 0.60 cents, seems like a joke nowadays but it's true.

I really don’t want to be critical, you had a nice visceral reaction to the song but I’d advise that storey telling is very international because it is cultural. Everyone has stories. And everyone has songs. Actually Springsteen ripped off a lot of his “shtick” from Val Morrison but with less nuance - his stories are important as well but I think that most in the western world give the storey telling prize to the Irish. But everyone’s story is important in itself and shouldn’t be the lackey of someone else, especially a conglomerate of media heavyweights who generally are in America.
Ok, I understand that. However I was speaking of country music specifically. They have a different way of storytelling. I grew up with it. I know it very well. And as someone who listens to all genres, I can tell the difference. It’s a pretty well known fact that country music is known for this. Not to downplay anyone else, I’m purely speaking about the fact that those 2 have the same way of storytelling.

I disagree to it sounding American.
This was born from a very hard drinking, working class pub culture.
Pre internet, we had a class rock music that was constantly on tour nation wide.
Bands like acdc were also born from this working class pub culture
You will find a rabbit hole of A grade rock from bands little known outside of australia
We had all of that here in the states too. Bands would (and still do) play in bars and pubs etc. That’s how they grow a following but it’s sadly not the same anymore.
@ToniaElkins I think the music industries from both nations, and even the British music industry to boot, back in the day, pushed their local talents through the radio stations.
There was a global industry, Australia's size restricted its outreach and hence became little known outside of Australia.
I agree that many artists started in pubs, the radio stations filled the pubs and sold the albums, our top artists couldn't make enough money with such a small population exposure, so they stayed in pubs and worked the scene.

I have to say i dont get these "Comments" on Videos- you the feature band ( The talent) as a 1/4 of the screen. You clearly have limited knowledge ooif the song and the band- you say at the start you LOVE Jimmys Voice- yet this song is sung by Ian Moss. Why do you do these things when you dont know the bands and the songs involved- Curious. I was out after 45 seconds

Because I’m reacting to music I’ve never heard. We didn’t get to hear these bands years ago so it’s new to us. Are you brand new to reaction videos dude?
