RX-7 needs a T-56 for the new trans, K series when swapped into other chassis usually cause a lot of vibrations especially if anything is solid mounted
A good amount of that brown tarnish is actually the modern synthetic oil additives depositing on non wear surfaces. Ask someone who rebuilds engines all day about how they can tell what kind of oil was ran in it
If you're having to repaint the subframe after 10k miles, I think it would be worth looking into using a 2K paint instead of whatever you can purchase at the auto parts store. Spraymax and Eastwood both offer a 2K chassis black that goes on much nicer, has a noticeably harder finish, and won't wash away at the first sniff of brake cleaner. They run about $30 per can and once you pop the bladder inside with the hardener you have to use the can up within a few days, but the end result is worth the extra cost.

300-400 whp and ~300 wtrq is about what the k20 rods and pistons can take before ringland failure or rods bend. I had a log manifold with a Greddy t517z turbo at 12 psi and the same exact piston failed in a similar manner. 2-stepping right after a dyno tune and ringland failed on cylinder #2 occurred. After going through more motors than I'd like to admit, I believe it due to a few things - k20z1's 11:1 compression ratio a bit too high to run a turbo safely on pump gas. I'm now running a k20a3 block and k24a2 head(9.8 compression ratio and true vtec). - The turbo being a restriction so hot exhaust gases naturally build up in the head and cylinder temps increase. - Turbo placement also probably has a effect on cylinder temps because both our cylinder #2 went out, may be able remedy with fuel trim. - Fuel dilution causing more friction on cylinder walls seems to be an issue even with a catch can but that can be fixed with frequent oil changes. You may have done something like this in the past so forgive me if I’m wrong but I think I have a good idea. You should do a trip from coast Coast and a vehicle that has no less than 300,000 miles and can spend no more than $3000 getting it roadworthy
Hey guys, for the driveshaft vibration to start get rid of the adapter from the AP1 flange to 1310. We had issues with our BMWs when running those. Let us know if you need help or chat more about that.
I did some research mid video on the Protect and restore oil. That stuff would be really nice to have on my 986 Porsche Boxster. Sadly they don’t have 0W-40 yet 😓
That gak building up is actually viscosity modifiers. It's a polymer that will melt and stick to engine surfaces. Generally lower grade oils or oils with broader weight ranges need more viscosity modifiers to operate properly meaning more deposits. After some research I found out Redline 5w30 has no viscosity modifiers in that weight range. I've been using it exclusively in my Subies since 2003 with good results. Redline will also clean the inside of an engine very well. So much so it's recommended to wait through a couple oil changes before a UOA. Unfortunately it has gotten very expensive. Aside from Redline seafoam and marvel mystery oil can clean the inside of an engine. There are some homebrews too. It is cool that vavoline came up with an oil for that purpose though. It'd be inteteresting to have a comparison. Might have to shoot the idea over to project farm.
If you can fit a t56 go with that my Magnuson supercharged TA made 650 with just an upgraded clutch and rearend and that transmission held some abuse and is still goin with the new owner

BMW ZF trans is the way to go for strength, definitely grab one of those with the adapter stuff.
I believe we would all want to see the results of running Valvoline restore and protect. Not everyone has money to be upgrading there car all the time but we can all invest into keeping our engines clean and if the oil does what it says then we would love to see it and let the people speak for the effectiveness of the oil
Grannas Racing has everything you need to put a T56 behind the K series in the FD, Joel is a great guy to top it all off.
I would love to see if the valvoline protect and restore works in real life as advertised. It would be great if after a prolonged use on this car they can show the before and after of the discoloration.
Ok I wanna see that valvoline restore and protect progress with before and afters. Make a vid on that I think it’d be a good scientific visualization
17 k veiws and 1.2 mil subs, come on guys get that like number up he deserves it ,he blew up his rx7 and put lots of effort into this vid for us let’s support him !
@6:40 needs to be the newest gif reaction face / "MFW"
For the transmission, the Tremec TKO or TKX might be a good choice, if you can find an adapter plate.
Awesome video as always Ben and Mark. Y'all need to LS swap the RX-7 and the RX-8.
Mark is my role model
That was great! Living the dream.
This Vidéo is the reason why we say K is the Way !!!! Good job boys
I'd recommend any of these BMW gearboxes to replace your current one
5 speed:
ZF S5D-320Z (up to 700hp)
ZF GS5-39DZ (up to 1000hp)
6 speed:
ZF GS6-37DZ (up to 700hp)
ZF GS6-53DZ (up to 1000hp)
The Valvoline sounds great on paper and practice in practice it might just gunk it up more
4:11 Mark casually dropping the transmission on the ground like we wouldn’t notice 😂
You guys make engine swap look so easy
You may have done something like this in the past so forgive me if I’m wrong but I think I have a good idea. You should do a trip from coast Coast and a vehicle that has no less than 300,000 miles and can spend no more than $3000 getting it roadworthy
Didn't even melt the piston like a typical 2step failure, you melted a ring land. That ASM tune putting in work I see
Hey guys, for the driveshaft vibration to start get rid of the adapter from the AP1 flange to 1310. We had issues with our BMWs when running those. Let us know if you need help or chat more about that.
I did some research mid video on the Protect and restore oil. That stuff would be really nice to have on my 986 Porsche Boxster. Sadly they don’t have 0W-40 yet 😓
Give Napa Aluminum bright a chance, it’ll EATTTT up the grime. I use it on valve covers to clear blockages
Mark's great! Would love to see some content about his s2k.
UOA?
@@shrimp562 used oil analysis.
You guys should get a dry ice blaster to clean that stuff!
If you can fit a t56 go with that my Magnuson supercharged TA made 650 with just an upgraded clutch and rearend and that transmission held some abuse and is still goin with the new owner
I hope that we can finally get the finale of the DSM build
Amazing episode. I totally enjoyed this. 👍🏼
