The F-14 Tomcat was the first ultimate step to the 4th Gen world, bringing in Active Radar Missiles and a new modernized radar set to fit it. The US Navy used these things extensively all across the world since it was born in 1974. The Tomcat got its first taste of combat in the Iran-Iraq War with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) and was credited with the first Phoenix kill, after shooting down 3 MiG-23s with a single Phoenix. After the Iran Revolution, the US stopped supplying the Tomcats and training the pilots. The Tomcat in US service got to see combat in Desert Storm, now supplied with F-14Bs and very few Ds and later fought in the Kosovo Conflict. The F-14Ds were the modernized versions of the Tomcat that featured a better HUD system, F-15E radar set, and MFD screens in the cockpit. This variant was a massive help in the Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001. The F-14 was fully retired from US service in 2006, but it left behind a legacy that cannot be replaced. To this day, only Iran operates a few F-14s, but most have run out of parts, or have been destroyed.
