    You Raise Me Up
    Started it's life as a slow air with fragments of a familiar Irish tune weaving its way into the melody. We tried to banish the piece but it would not go away. Maybe it wanted a different life-form…and so, we decided to pursue the idea of adding lyrics and asked Irish writer Brendan Graham to listen to it. His books "The Whitest Flower" and "The Element of Fire" - two best-selling novels about the life of Ellen Rua O' Malley during the Irish famine, had inspired us strongly. He immediately began to "hear a story" in the melody and by that same evening had shaped the first draft of You raise me up. The unaccompanied violin opening is Fionnuala's first and untouched guide recording for the original demo, while Uilleann pipes' grand master, Liam O Flynn carries the tune through its middle course. The soulful singing of Brian Kennedy and Tracey Campbell-Nation, together with the London Community Gospel Choir and Irish choral group, Anúna, gives full expression to the deep spiritual longing within the lyric.
    Lyrics by Brendan Graham | Music by Rolf Lovland
    When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
    When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
    Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
    Until you come and sit awhile with me.
    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
    You raise me up... to more than I can be.
    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
    You raise me up... to more than I can be.
    There is no life - no life without its hunger;
    Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
    But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
    Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.
    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    And I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
    You raise me up... to more than I can be.
    You raise me up... to more than I can be.

    I am a bit fed up as some of you know by the big labels "stealing" music - take this and search RUclips and see how many times it is not credited Rolf Løvland, Grosh Groban is the dominating because he is on a US label. So every time you play it, and Josh Groban is credited, his US label earns money that they then pay to Josh Groban. Now, if you aim to monopolise the media dear company, do so just and correct - and honour the one that wrote it first, and not those that copied it later and "forgot" to mention that "Oh, I heard it at a concert in Dublin by...". When you listen to music, check if it is credited the right person, look for a TV show on a foreign channel for foreigners - Rolf does not appear on ABC! Fight back with lawyers? Who can afford a team of lawyers for years, contesting your claim - the media companies have made this impossible. What the labels decide is what it is going to be. Maybe we should stop using RUclips and make another shot at Imeem?

      knuthf During the 2006 (?) Nobel Peace Prize Awards, why did WestLife say that Rolf Lovland was the "co-writer" of the song, thus implying that they helped co-write You Raise Me Up?
      Another question. Why was that bridge (the verse not heard in the rendition by Groban or WestLife) omitted in the versions sang by Groban and WestLife?
      Thanks!

      ***** Good questions. My score says: "Lyrics by Brendan Graham, music by Rolf Løvland" - Then the second part, they omit one of the strongest treats in music and lyrics, probably to remain within the given seconds suited for a recording...

    Слова Брендана Грехам, музыка Рольфа Ловланд "Ты поднимаешь меня"
    Когда я поникший и, ах, моя душа уставшая,
    Когда наступают проблемы, и моё сердце обременено,
    Тогда я застыв, жду здесь в тишине,
    Пока ты не придешь посидеть рядом со мной.
    Ты поднимаешь меня так, что я могу стоять на вершинах гор / (Ты поднимаешь меня чтобы я мог стоять на горе/взбираться на горы)
    Ты поднимаешь меня так, что я могу ходить по бушующим морям
    Я сильный, когда я на твоих плечах
    Ты поднимаешь меня выше того чем/кем я могу быть
    Не бывает жизни - жизни без голода,
    Каждый беспокойное сердце бьется так несовершенно,
    Но, когда ты приходишь, и я полон чуда,
    Иногда я думаю, что передо мной промелькнула вечность
    (x2)
    Ты поднимаешь меня так, что я могу стоять на вершинах гор / (Ты поднимаешь меня чтобы я мог стоять на горе/взбираться на горы)
    Ты поднимаешь меня так, что я могу ходить по бушующим морям
    Я сильный, когда я на твоих плечах
    Ты поднимаешь меня выше того чем/кем я могу быть

      Jostein Øiestad He can always say it, but listen to the song he refers to, it is about as similar as "Pål sine høner". There are rules for plagiarism, and there are also rules for original pieces of art. If the US protection do not suffice, we have to raise demands from Europe, and rest assured Google/RUclips - that day will come.

    Just so you know….This song is stolen from Johann Helgason, who composed it in 1970. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson made the lyrics and it was published on his last record in 1977. Secret Garden or Rolf Lovland and Brendan Graham claim to have"composed" you raise me up 2003. Jóhann Helgason pressed charges 2007…Judge for yourself the Origianal..Söknuður with Vilhjálm Vilhjálmson

      I am sorry, but I fail to accept your claim and it is flatly rejected. Further arguments will get you reported. You have tried this and the courts have turned the claim aside. For someone inside the music industry, your claim hurts, because unfounded claims of originality are made all the time and denying the artists and composers pay for their work. It is vicious and mean. This is the first time this peace was played in public, Inner thoughts and unrecorded music with no score: get lost and stay away. Every musician has a right to his own work. Should you still rant: I can claim I played an early version of this with Rolf 10 years earlier.

      @@knuthf People might mix up Inter-musicality and plagiarism. inter-musicality and other forms of inspiration e.g in literature is natural. Authors or human in general doesn't always realize exact what inspire them. It's like a sub councessness. Inspiration like that is universal because we're exposed to impressions all the time. We are born like a blank sheet of paper. What we experience from the oral stage and the anal stage to the grave might come out from an artist. Plagiarism and inter-musicality/text may be a fine margin. Nothing in art and culture is 100% original. I don't know a better way to say.
      edit: The question is. What is the source or inspiration for the Icelandic melody/song. Or should we say. Where did the Icelandic or Faroese steal from

      @@exentr My part is that I played some time earlier "Georgia" for Rolf, and explained how it simple moves with quarts and quint - The same moves as in the ancient church chants from the monestaries. Please stop, don't make these allegations. Original music is what comes at the spur of the moment, it happens. When it has happened, anyone using it is plagiarism.i have been fighting the US "labels" for three decades now. Record it, post it here. There are simple ways of detecting copies.
