      Jack, you were the one who started this whole lens simulation thing. I'm proud to own your lens bundles and it's awesome to see you be a part of the group that's continuing the lens sim "movement". This new addon is really exciting - thank you for contributing your anamorphic lens to this long list in the Lens Sim addon! Looks really good and the images are resolving so quickly for that kind of photographic quality.

      @@The3Dsmash Thanks man, I def made a hard push for community members to see the importance of real DOF, but found out (foolishly this year) that no I was not the 'first' to experiment with the physical lens modeling ideas, just seemed to be the first to publish kits for other users to be able to use and find easily. I think there were quite a few before but they didn't seem to publish kits or research anywhere easy to find. When I came in contact with Havard over discord in June, he had already been independently experimenting with this new approach for ray steering and I was blown away, so seems best fit to offer my full support on His method and His work going forward with its advantages over physical modeling limits with Blender's 32-bit floating point error limits! This addon is a dream come true and has a great future for community contributed lens stack databases and more so I'm excited to see its popularity skyrocket!

    Awesome, but will there be more lens profiles added in the future? There is a tutorial on how to set up your own lens profile, but it could be a lot of work. Modern lenses are very advanced, so it must be much harder to add them. On the other hand they are more and more perfect which means they are more and more similar to virtual cameras. So if you reduce "defects" of old lenses you will get essentialy same results.

    Thanks for this Gleb.
    FYI - tilt-shift's primary use in the real world is for architectural photography, where it is used to compensate for perspective distortion, which is exaggerated when an image is framed in a magazine layout. The shift in focus is really just a side effect and in real life the aperture is generally set wide open so that the depth of focus is not an issue.
    More on the link below (just a quick Google search I did - I'm sure you'll find you're own material if you're interested...). At around 1:00 you'll see an original old school shift and tilt. These believe it or not are still the gold standard for architectural photographers.

    The addon is soooo cool, brought back that excitement I first had when I started learning Blender. Hi Gleb, the plugin looks like a considerable amount of work went in it. However, as I'm guessing in regard of mentioned portal feature, something technically analogous but less sophisticated was implemented in Lightwave 3d couple of decades ago. By the way, this portal thing also opens a new possibility to bake in blender any compound object which could consist of anything: instances, particles, volumes, etc... Lightwave has such a camera by default and when I switched to Blender I've been missing it. And when it first released, it was almost it, but I didn't succeed at the time, baking normals correctly and it had been requiring workarounds in regard to other popular baking passes. Also does it accept custom distortion maps, like pro compositing software do? It could be useful to adapt to some lenses in one's arsenal to double them in cgi production.

      That's a good question and something that needs to be tested for any particular workflow. I guess, it will affect some passes more than the other, for instance I can imagine that something like AO will be more useable than... let's say, masks? I haven't really gone there yet, to be honest. The potential tradeoffs of using the vintage lenses seem to be somewhat similar to real cinematography - shooting with peculiar-looking lenses often limits the amount of posh-pro, keying etc, that can be reasonably expected.

      Just to make sure I understood it correctly: do you mean that using Octane render, we can do ray-traced depth of field in post (e.g. composite different passes without DOF, then add DOF in post and that depth-of-field would look just like its rendered counterpart)? That would be interesting to check, to educate myself more than anything :)

      @@GlebAlexandrov The closest 2D dof tool would be a new plugin for Nuke called MagicDefocus2. It just came out.
      I'm a compositor in film/TV and I use the v1 of that tool quite a bit to match lens artifacting in real shots. I haven't tried v2 yet, but knowing the limitations of post dof, and the clear complexity of this blender plugin in regards to simulating the lens via ray tracing, I can say with about 100% confidence that this plugin (Lens Sim) will produce way more realistic results with fewer (unwanted) artifacts.
      However, obviously it's not apples to apples, as one is a post DOF and one is in-render DOF. Doing DOF in post is pretty essential when compositing multiple elements together from various sources (real footage, real elements, CG, still photography tracked in etc).
      I wish this Lens Sim plugin had a Nuke version... I would pay big money for that, I don't care how slow the render time is vs other post DOF tools (MagicDefocus2 renders each frame in under 0.5s with no noise). If I could layer everything together as a 3D scene in Nuke and then render the DOF it with Lens Sim... Ugh that'd be perfect.

I could digress more on details but in short I dont think i will be using Photographer anymore unfortunately. Ive only been using Lens Sim a few hours and im hitched

      Lens Sim offers physically based, raytraced lens simulation. These can be complex to set up and control, longer to render, but more pleasing and realistic if imperfections is what you are after.
      Photographer does not offer lens simulation outside of optical vignetting and bokeh shape. Other lens imperfections are featured as Compositing post effects for ease of use, faster rendering and iteration, but it doesn't have longitudinal chromatic abberation, tilt shift or split diopter. It offers other rendering features and is not limited to Lens Simulation though.

    Hey Gleb, any idea how to effieciently add fog in post when rendering with this addon? Can't use volumetrics because it's not really efficient for animation and usually I would add fog with mist pass, but it won't work here unfortunately.

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  Месяц назад

      My question would be: are you going to render with or without depth-of-field and certain in-plugin effects like chromatic aberration? Chromatic aberration will make some passes (including the mist pass) less usable, let's say. But if there's no aberration and certain other effects, then it should be no problem, at least in theory, to use the Mist pass for volumetrics? Thinking of it, even if you render with a very shallow raytraced depth of field? Or am I overlooking something?

      @@GlebAlexandrov I would definitely want to keep DOF while rendering. It's gorgeous! AFAIK vignetting created by the this lens addon is visible on mist pass so the mist pass would be darker on the edges of the frame. But one thing I have to ask: Can I make Pass Leyers and will cryptomate work with this addon? Because if I understand correctly the effect happens on a portal that passes through a regular plane.... and I think this alone already blocks the isolation of objects and materials in cryptomate. It's nice, but if you want to do something with the renderer afterwards, it rather doesn't leave much control :| Well, but I haven't checked this shader with Portal.... maybe it works differently and all information like normal. color albedo “passes” through this shader. Denosing can also suffer heavily if it doesn't transfer normals and other render passes.

      A short answer is no. It does model bloom & glare, and overall "softness" common in vintage lenses, but not the anamorphic flares and that sort of stuff (I haven't tested this aspect expensively, so I can be wrong about it though).

    The addon breaks when you move the camera too far away. At a long enough distance, it will disregard objects moving towards or away from the camera as if to suggest object locations are baked into the lens view. This addon is useless for complicated animated scenes that require a lot of camera movement.

    Looks very interesting. But this is another one of theses addons that wants to do everything in render which is a very inefficient workflow. All the effects shown can be reproduced In compositing which is a lot faster and u dont have to rerender your whole shot if you whant to change a small thing. Another big problem I see here is AOVs. Good luck using cryptomattes and depth passes if you preblur you image in the render it self or put smudges on the lense xD. If youre an absolut pro with realistic renders and dont work in a team I can absolutly see someone using this but as a compositer, if I would get rendered out depth of field and chromatic aberration I would not be able to work with it.

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  Месяц назад +5

      Thanks for your comment! Indeed, you're right mentioning that using lens simulation would reduce the leeway in compositing. Just like it would reduce what can be done in the post-pro / keying in cinematography (real cameras and lenses I mean). Yet the vintage lenses are often used instead of recreating the swirling bokeh pattern etc in post-pro, and for a reason. "All the effects shown can be reproduced In compositing" - with all respect, that's a bit more complicated than that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole point of such add-ons, and Cycles path-traced DOF is that the out-of-focus rendering is, well, path-traced/ray traced. The incoming light rays, before reaching the virtual sensor, get refracted via the lens geometry which of course has a particular curvature to it etc, and this effect gets pretty complex indeed especially in the vintage lenses like Helios 44-2 etc. If that type of look could be easily recreated in post, we wouldn't see so much use of Helios 44-2 used in movies like Dune, etc (I'm snapping back to cinematography, but I'm sure you'll get the point) :)

      Then, my god, even something like anamorphic focus breathing, or split diopter, or dynamic tilt-shift, how to even start approaching it from the post-pro perspective, I'm not sure to be honest.

      Also curious for the potential of achieving this in post, either in Blender or in Davinci Resolve. When working in larger projects this seems very risky to render out scenes with locked effects such as the ones this addon uses, althought it does look absolutely stunning and I would love to use it, I just definitely see problems down the line of doing endless re-renders to change things with the lenses etc :/
