John Goodman always delivered. I feel the reason Dan got so upset is that he resents how after working hard all his life, he ended up needing rent from his kids and granddaughter. It’s possibly a crushing blow to his pride.

I always thought Becky was an insufferable snobby poor “rich” girl, but Harris takes the cake. To fling something at your grandfather as if it never occurred to you that he already feels bad for needing help. God, they need to let her elope and leave like Becky did.
Becky was such a rotten teen that I feel satisfied that she's such a train wreck in The Conners. 🚂

Like you said, at least Becky’s anger was understandable (sometimes) and she had aspirations so she worked hard in school until she found out college was not an option for her. Harris is supposed to be Darlene 2.0 - she ditches school, she does whatever she wants, and she thinks she’s too good for the family. Except Harris has NO redeeming qualities at all. She’s not even funny when she sasses people. She’s _just_ insufferable and incredibly entitled.
@@Andy-xx3tt that's why Rosanne taking her her to the "hillbilly day spa" was a good idea. The conners is kinda ass from what I've seen and it seemed like it was going in a pretty good direction when Rosanne was still there but lost any hope of being truly good when she was cancelled.

How does Harris not see the irony. She's complaining about the fact that her family is so poor She has to help contribute, instead of being rich enough to support her so she can protest about being poor and against the rich instead of working.
It speaks to how vapid and hypocritical a lot of protestors are. A lot of them do it to feel like they're apart of something, but when it comes to their own family, they're indifferent and even hostile sometimes.

And when the day comes when young people feel it's okay to disrespect their parents or grandparents it's time to not be around them. Dan should have told Harris to pick up her money and get out of his house. Nobody has a gun to her head to live there. Let's see how she does living on her own without family help.

I don't remember Roseanne being "lighthearted"
The old series when they did something heavy like revealing that Jackie was in an abusive relationship and taking her to the hospital they then take a break and then slowly reintroduce comedic elements back into the show. But now Dan who was a male icon for many is being forced to swallow his pride to accept money from his grandkids to keep his house and hinted he wishes he was dead/had suicidal thoughts and before the break they try to end with a joke which to me falls flat because of what just happened. Timing is a strong part of comedy and the current writers don't seem to know that.
I agree, and I'd like to add that the attempt at humor at the end may not have worked because Harris is not a sympathetic character. As far as I'm concerned, she deserved, at minimum, a follow-up lecture from Darlene and maybe some sort of punishment. Harris hasn't had any character development; she is always some degree of negative and after incidents like this, she doesn't seem to have learned anything and goes right back to being rude and disrespectful.
I agree. The original show dealt with a lot of heavy subject matter, but blended the comedy in seamlessly. The Conners is like a never-ending pit of misery with a smattering of bad jokes. It's sad to see that literally none of these people got a happy ending.
I think because Roseanne could deliver a serious matter in joking type way. And not EVERYOE can do it. As did Darlene the character, but this Darlene is too much like Sara Gilbert in real life's views being filtered through Darlene's sense of humor, it seems.

I really dislike Harris. How Darlene raised such an awful child is beyond me. She basically ignored her son who turned out super sweet and helpful while she hyper focus’s on Harris and makes every excuse under the sun for her horrid behaviour and never actually parents her. The last straw was when the grandma wanted to give him money when she died, but because Harris was never nice to her, didn’t want to put her in the will. Harris and Darlene were so angry and actually believed they had a right to an inheritance. What the heck? You can’t treat someone like dirt and then expect them to give you things.

In the reboot she had the same weak jokes and diminished ability to deliver them that the rest of the cast did though.
Everything after season five of the 90’s series has been bad actually, with or without her.
I pretend the show ended then. Roseanne’s business was a success, Dan found a good job, Darlene was planning on going away to school. I pretend that Jackie’s ex Gary got a divorce and they get back together. Mark’s job works out and Becky goes back to school. The end.

The wardrobe department of this show did an amazing job making Harris look like Darlene, Roseanne, and Jackie all at the same time.

I felt this scene was definitely gold in a way. Harris gives that snobby attitude towards her grandfather and Darlene just trying to be a parent. You had to just feel sorry for Dan going through something like that.

UGH. Generation Z. As sarcastic as Darlene was as a teenager, she would've NEVER spoken to her father like that. There's literally nothing I like about Harris as a character. She is written as unrelentingly mean, verbally abusive, and downright vicious.
Hey now, don’t drag my generation into this. 😂 They have written Harris way, way over the top snotty and unlikable since the start, and I just don’t get it. What you said is exactly right - Darlene would’ve never done this. Becky only had one moment where she really talked to Dan like this, and it was quickly followed by her eloping. They both had more mellow moments too. The entire schtick for Harris is just her being an ungrateful brat.

She comes off as pretentious and delusional. Every time she does the "you ppl are poor and old" it's like she thinks she's above everyone else or doesn't realize she's poor too. I know what it means to be a teen back in the 90's but the freedom they give Harris s ridiculous. I don't know if that's what the writers did on purpose because Darlene can be uppity like that at times but with Harris you get the sense that she genuinely hates her family. What kills me is that no one ever seems to put her in her place or maybe someone has and I just haven't got that far in seasons yet. I'm only on season 2 binge watching "The Connors" on Tubi because I like the show and I grew up watching "Roseanne" in the 80's and 90's but Harris is just, 🤦🏾♂️WTFsville?!

Damn I feel exactly the way John Goodman dead in this scene. Covid-19 has really kicked a lot of us in the teeth and if your low-income it's even worse. It's embarrassing asking for help I hate doing it when I really needed it. I just want things to get back to normal where I can hug somebody and not worry if I'm going to die the next day. I want to be financially stable and never need anybody's help financially. The last two years have been really painful for everybody and this seemed really exemplifies it even more

Welcome to being a teenager, because we've all acted like this (I once insulted my dad's career as a teacher and in turn got my ass whooped hard for being ungrateful. My sister refused to come home and eat the meals my dad provided because she'd much rather be a pest on someone elses family every day). So really, she's playing the role of a teen perfectly.

I don't care what anyone says, we have all had conversations exactly this. We have all been upset about paying for rent at an inconvenient time and helping our struggling family, not just because we like our money but out of frustration and sheer powerlessness to do much else.
I can understand her frustration. Her friends may be attending college now. They probably don't have to pay rent. That is no excuse to be nasty to your grandfather.

I'm reading what people are saying and they are right about how these serious situations are displayed followed by a sudden joke at the end. Roseanne was a master at it. And only certain people can do it. Darlene the character as a kid was great at it too. But now I think it's more of Sara Gilbert filtering her real-life views through Darlene the character. Like when Darlene bails Dan out of jail for hitting Jackie's boyfriend or Roseanne finding out Jackie was beaten up.

Am I missing something, or is there anything likeable about Harris? I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt because of her age and circumstances, but she's at least old enough to use some manners and show some empathy. When I was about her age, my mom, my grandma and I were in a similarly bad situation but it never would have occurred to me to add to their stress by acting like this.
I wouldn't be alive if I acted like that to my mother, father, or grandparents.

Remember on Mad Men, when Pete Campbell asked his Father for an advance on his Trust Fund and his Father said "No!" but he didn't know his Father had two of nothing. I was in the Same Boat with My Own Parents, I would plan to buy something they would discourage me saying I should save my Money for a "Rainy Day" but when it "came" it was for them, I tried to make them understand that I worked too hard for "mine" and although I don't mind helping out it got to be a bit much. They felt bad but I didn't have a choice.

Lol... Yeah, I'm sure that WAS shock to her to realize that her grandad maybe DOESN'T want to have to ask? Me, I've been paying my parents rent for awhile now, so its no big. I grew up with kids who paid a small portion of their wages from their part-time jobs to their parents/guardians for upkeep, and I never thought it was wrong unless they were taking more than 30% (the standard amount of your monthly income they say you should not go over for living costs). It makes sense whether you NEED that rent money or not, as it teaches kids to factor in costs of life from the moment they start to work. There's never a surprise about it when they move out eventually on their own (one hopes they can afford to, anyways, someday).
