One of the best left hooks you will ever see and one of the most needless right hand KO's shots too.
Mills Lane was a great referee. Mostly he got it right on the money.. This time I have to say he got it so badly wrong as to be dangerous. I get that it was a title fight and that he should have given McCrory every chance he could in the fight, but it was obvious to most watching that the first left hook and knock down was going to be impossible to recover from in such short time. Thankfully McCrory was ok. The left hook was as perfect a punch as it's possible to witness... Speed, power, and accuracy.
Don Curry was at the height of his game at this point, being touted as better than the Great Sugar Ray Leonard.. For a while that praise didn't look too outlandish having previously dismantle our own gutsy Colin Jones, along with two wins against a very cagey but skilled Marlon Starling. This win would propel him into SRL style adulation. Sadly for Curry those predictions proved to be somewhat hopeful. In less than a year after becoming undisputed Welterweight champion he would face, what at the time was portrayed as yet another Brit to be swatted away in suitably easy fashion... No one read that script to Lloyd Honeyghan.
Honeyghan oused belief from every pore and wasn't fazed one little bit by the hype and taunts that came his way. The fight was not a big event..no massive fanfares, just a sideshow for the high rollers between gambling sprees. Honeyghan must have been inspired by the lack of respect he was afforded that week.. He was unstoppable. Curry never really overcame that defeat and save for a couple of decent outings with wins against Gianfranco Rossi and Lupe Aquino he would fall short against better opponents in Michael Nunn ,Mike McCallum and Terry Norris. He had his moment of greatness and maybe had he stuck with the team that had got him there in the first place he may have achieved so much more.
