    It's so amazing seeing all the joints slip together perfectly every time. And I can't get a good fit every time when I'm doing normal stud walls when I work. But then again I have just started as a carpenter after 3 years in college in "carpenter class" (I'm now 19 years old) but it's still fun working with wood. Me and my coworker have been "renovating" an old summer cabin built in the 40s. (Pretty badly built and would have been better to knock it down and start over) the walls was only 2x3 and a spacing of about 30 inches. And leaning in all different directions. And uninsolated. Well well we are almost done now after 2-2,5 months.
    Greetings from snowy Sweden

      Howdy buddy- I have been doing carpentry work for many years now. It takes patience and perseverance. I worked with my Dad for many years and he was a perfectionist so I had to do things to suit him. Hang in there and you will become very comfortable with your work. I admire you for wanting to do carpentry work. Take care and stay safe. God bless you

      The Bearded Carpenter Thanks :) I learn as I go and each time I try to get more and more precise on my cuts to get a better result.
      I can see that you are a perfectionist you're self. Wich is a good thing cause this cabin will be absolutely stunning when it's all done.
      Stay safe

    I wish I had the patience and skills to build from a log to a cabin. I'm too small and too old now. I build more post and beam. 4"x4" and 2"x4" juniper frame. 12' widths. I have built 4 in the last 10 years since I retired at 55. Off grid, 12v solar only. This one here is on 1 acre, 12'x20'. Running spring water, wood stove, 100w 12v solar, solar water heater. All the comforts of home. One at beach 12'x18', one at lake 12'x16' and one at the old "farm" 12'x14'. All board and batten, 1"x12" pine siding. This one here is the only one with insulation and interior v-groove pine interior. I also built a tractor camper, 1 axle "vardo" 7'x14' rounded rubber roof material for antique tractor rides and river camping....James

    With your inspiration I am in search of logs now to build my log cabin. Unfortunately logs are not readily available where I live so I am designing the cabin with a different log diameters. This will enable me to calculate the number of rounds I require and to purchase the correct number of logs based on log diameter. With 6 or so extra for errors and additions.

      William Vogan Howdy William- I have been doing some restoration work on a 170 year old cabin. It’s a paying job so I need to get it wrapped up and have more finances for the new cabin. Also, we have a family situation that has taken away from time to do the editing. Thank you for watching. Hope to be able to get back in the swing of things. God bless you

    Hello friend, love your video series. Very informative and enjoyable to watch so keep them coming. :) When you final assemble the dovetail cabin, do you use long timber screws in the dovetail notch corners to secure the logs or do you just rely on the weight of the logs (gravity) on top of the notch to hold the building together?

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  2 года назад

      Howdy- the notches will keep the logs together. However, I do put allthread in the top four rounds and tie them together. Lots of people do put some kind of pins or dowel rods in but if they aren’t done right it can cause problems with settling. If the logs are pinned there is no way to tighten the shoulders of the logs to have a tight fit. Hope this explains it. Take care and God bless you

    Well, that looked easy. Is it typical to sandwich the ceiling / second floor joist with bottom notched and a top notched plate / logs? So, we still have the roof to do yet, right?

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  3 года назад

      J F Howdy JF- I could have made the joists lower than I did and put the whole joist pocket in one log but I wanted the extra clearance under the joists. Also, I was showing how it could be done. Thank you so much for watching our videos. God bless you

    Hi it’s me again, I have a couple questions for you, I see that you follow The Outsider in one of his videos he says that in June is the best time to take the bark of the trees because it lifts right off, the video showed that it was true, I’m wondering if that is true for all trees or just in Canada, I know that sounds silly, but if it comes off so easily why not plan to cut down trees in June and debarked them when it comes off easily? I’m trying to talk my husband into building a log cabin and want the easiest, best way to strip off the bark😂 my next question is do you think it’s possible for a inexperienced person to buy wooded land and cut down some trees to build their own cabin? My final question is are there log home “camps” where we could go and gain hands on experience? Ok I’m out of questions for now😂 thank you, Cindy

    Many of the videos series I watch show insulation placed between both the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the dovetail joints. What is your take on that? You obviously didn’t use insulation.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  3 года назад +1

      Howdy - the way I fit the notches they are complete wood to wood. There is no place to put insulation. I know that some of the European log builders do put insulation between the logs where they have scribe fit the logs. I have a friend in Estonia who is a fantastic log builder and they put insulation between the logs but the notches are wood touching wood with a tight fit. Blessings

      Howdy Neyo- I don’t know where you live so it would be hard for me to know exactly what to do. Are you allowed to use termite pest control? Keeping the soil dry around your house and having all the wood high enough off the ground could help. God bless you
