  • RJD2 reflects on what sampling means to him, how the artform developed, the history and creative potential of the MPC, and the unique sound and philosophy of sampled music, in this excerpt from our new course, "RJD2: From Samples to Songs": soundfly.com/RJD2.
Watch RJ run through the history of samplers - from reel-to-reel tape machines to the Mellotron to the Emulator II, through to MPCs and modern DAWs. He talks about the creative power of the limitations that sampling places on artists. And he dives into what attracted him to sampling and how the art form has changed his relationship to listening and making music.

In this exclusive online course, "RJD2: From Samples to Songs," you'll learn from RJ himself how to write and arrange music drawing on the power of sampling records and a collage-based mindset. He will show you how he personally tackles new tracks with his trusty MPC, and he'll open up sessions from some of his classic tracks to show how they were made. You'll learn new approaches to sampling, songwriting, and arranging, and how to make instrumental beats that capture someone's attention from start to finish. Along the way, RJ will share with you his wisdom, perspectives, and advice for fulfilling your creative dreams.
This course is for anyone interested in producing compelling instrumental music drawing from a sampling tradition - no previous experience or MPC required. Drop the needle and let's get started! soundfly.com/courses/rjd2-sam...

I got the Akai Professional MPK49, several years ago, and even though I knew what it could do, in mapping sounds to pads, I couldn't bring myself, to pick up a flow that was different from the familiar keyboard fingering, and hand shapes.
This video helped me, to see the limiting, can be more than a tweaking tool, but it can be the ESCAPE LADDER out of the ever expanding OCEANS OF SOUND, that I find myself lost in, more often than not.
I've seen RJD2 in concert twice, and the geometric nature of shape constraints altering flow, make for more than I had realized. There's a forground, middleground, and background, that I picked up on, but this is like finding the actual roots and branches, when before, I was only appreciating the leaves. Thank You, as a musician, and thank you, as a dancer, as I know this will help me find even more fun gears, and the beat goes on, just like my love, everlasting.
