I know nothing about music and I am so glad that you and others help explain why I am drawn to certain pieces of music. In this case it matches the film's scene perfectly, that gnawing nervousness at the start, not knowing what is about to happen, then building up through excitement and fear, the ultimately sheer climactic terror at the cruel ending of human life.

John Williams also used a musical "ticking clock" effect in his theme music to 60s TV series The Time Tunnel.

How much did Barber's Adigio in Platoon influence all of this?

Journey to the Line was one of the first tracks that made me fall in love with Hans Zimmer's music.

1993’s Jurassic Park made Steven Spielberg my favorite director
His 1998 Saving Private Ryan made me a huge World War 2 buff
In 1999 Pearl Harbor had a teaser that used Journey to the Line
Hans Zimmer was on my radar
2000’s Gladiator became my favorite movie and to my surprise the composer of the music was none order than HANS ZIMMER
From that day forward I worshipped at the altar of Hans Zimmer
