  • Our first documentary series with Alexa Chung culminates with examining fashion’s marriage of the old and the new. How does a brand stand the test of time, and what do historic fashion houses like Balmain do to stay relevant without losing loyal customers? Olivier Rousteing is the answer. He talks history, future, money, Instagram, Kardashians and dancing with a bumbag with Chung in the grand finale to this eye-opening series. To tie up her investigations Chung then gives us an insight into her own role within fashion as she introduces us to her agent, Saif Mahdhi at Next agency in Paris, and discusses how social changes in what we’re after from our cover girls have affected her own career path and changed the face of fashion magazines forever.

    Balmain was totally revolutionary like half a decade ago but the same designs relative in 2010 keep getting regurgitated over and over agin, they are boring to me and totally passé. Also, fuck Balmain for collaborating with H&M who is infamous for abominable human rights violations (i.e. disgusting sweatshops). Alexa, why not dedicate season two to discussing advanced capitalism and the exploitation of impoverished workers who make clothing for everyone from H&M to Burberry? Fashion/ adornment is a huge gift. I love it. But the ethics and culture behind it is nothing short of nefarious.

      +Birdie Bowie That's a good idea for series 2. Not sure they would do it but it would make a really interesting doco and get people talking about it more instead of turning a blind eye.

      +Birdie Bowie Decent post.
      Think of it this way: "advanced capitalism" brings money to the people who work in these so-called sweatshops. H&M employs people that might otherwise be not employed if it weren't for "advanced capitalism."

    • @birdiehall7817
      @birdiehall7817 9 лет назад +14

      That is a fallacious argument and an absurd generalization. These companies take in so much excess income (I think more than a trillion dollars annually) that they are ethically obligated to enforce better conditions of their workers, who are mostly young mothers working in disgraceful settings. It is more economically sustainable to treat workers with integrity and respect as opposed to human pack-mules. Of course these jobs could be a good thing, but companies like H&M and Zara simply detach themselves from any responsibility whatsoever. Consult the Bangladesh factory collapse and tell me that capitalism is better for people in developing countries making shitty clothes that wreck the environment, and the people struggling to live in those environments.

    • @jensenraylight8011
      @jensenraylight8011 7 лет назад

      human right violation?, they throw the 60% of production to the asia
      thats mean H&M didnt even own the manufacture company, they outsource it to the asia
      the third party was making 60% of H&M cloth
      so why H&M are accused for the violation?, they just outsource the cloth to other third party company that own the manufacture
      the one who making a violation was that third party company, they want more money so they abuse their worker
      they didnt have any responsibility because they didnt even own the manufacture company
      didnt even manage the company, and the manufacture company not making cloth just for one brand,
      they make cloth for many different kind of brand

      How someone looks on the outside is not always indicative of whether or not they are healthy! Having curves does not necessarily mean that you are healthy. And on the other hand, some people are naturally thin, like Alexa. I think what she what she was getting at is that it's good to show diverse body shapes/types, which is what she should have said.

    I'd love to see the burberry atelier, headquarters, employers and of course an interview with the man himself ; Christopher Bailey. I was also wondering if having a career in business or management could still get you into the more creative side of the fashion industry! I a way I feel like I should study something that can provide me with a reasonable income, whereas studying fashion isn't that safe and secure.

You could complete your current degree and earn a decent salary while honing your fashion skills and business knowledge on the side.It takes longer but it is probably worth it. i am not a fashionisto but i am here for the clues about the business structure, campaign and all sorts of basic business decisions. I think they've got it down.

    I think Olivier Rousteing really tapped into how to effectively use social media as a branding tool, moreso than any other fashion house. I'm really interested in how he sees everything and this would have been a great video to show young people interested in fashion, if only Alexa Chung hadn't been so crude. I'm not prude but it means the video isn't suitable to show to high school students which is a shame, it would have been great for them.

    I love fashion so much but I feel like the only main thing that people think about as a job in the fashion industry is to be a designer or be involved in the marketing but I know there's so many other jobs in it too that I feel like I would be better at but like I feel like it also depends on money and that if you can't buy anything whether it's for a business or designing that you can't get anywhere so it's kind of impossible to find what you truly are meant to do or want to do but these videos did help me see that there are so many other options in it and not to limit yourself to anything :)

    so when did he do the law degree he says he has (at the beginning of the interview). he says he was working as a stripper at 18. so did he do his degree when he was 12? he is only 25 now. i don't believe he has any qualification in law or fashion. i don't think he knows anything about law or fashion. i think he is passed around a group of wealthy men as a sex toy and his position at balmain is part payment for that.

    What a lovely end to an amazing series! This has really made me love fashion even more. I've always wanted to go into the fashion industry and this has really highlighted everything I love about it. I'm now a lot more confident in my direction. Thank you Alexa for being an incredible host! You have such an extraordinary vision and great personality, there are so many ways I can look up to you. CAN'T WAIT for the second series!

    Enjoyed the series but I still think this doesn't talk about Fashion completely either. What about agencies that collaborate like Atelier: Leo Burnett and Cult London. Or freelancers and consultants like Mimma Viglezio and Rosarie King. I feel like it also washed over some topics like the hardship to even set foot in the fashion world even when at one of the Universities you featured. I would have also liked to have seen the interaction of Kering and LVMH. Two massive companies who together basically rule the fashion industry. I understand this is for Vogue but if someone is to create a documentary called "Future of Fashion" it needs to deal with these things as well. Overall well done Vogue and Alexa.
