Most people dismiss fashion because most fashion dismisses them, whether by price, social class, size, or race.

Inclusive for others which require youthful figures such as jeans
I just find it interesting how they don't talk about the garment industry in third world countries. The fashion industry in not only about designers and models but the production of these products plays a role as well. If they talk about revolutionizing the industry they'll have to consider this part as well.

I think this series was more about the opportunities in the fashion industry and about the many career opportunities you can have in this industry. This was about widening the aspect on how we look at fashion industry. Really showing there is much more than just the faces and what we see in the public eye. But I think your point is really interesting and accurate too.
@Loraine Mohar it's not about activism, it's about the harsh reality of where the majority of our (working class folk) clothing comes from. It's about human decency and being responsible for contributing to sweatshops
Alexa is a natural as a fashion journalist: bright, thoughtful, articulate, lovely, funny and warm. Good program.
I don't intend to sound creepy, but she's just so fascinating to me. Everything from her demeanor down to the way she talks and looks (she's like model material imo) and her big brain.... ughh I love her so much

My female ancestors always made their own clothes. When I was under 10yrs old I could knit, make lace, and use a sewing machine. My grandmother was disappointed in me when I turned 11yrs old, and I wasn't a seamstress. My mum taught me how to make basic patterns, and sew the materials. After I left school, I went to a fashion designing course. The problem I faced was my teachers refused to grade my work. They accused me of cheating. Even through I did all my work at the fashion course. I went to other fashion courses, where they all said I didn't have what it takes to get in the fashion industry. The teachers would ignore, and bully me in class. Students would watch, but not say anything. So I gave up.
An elderly lady once asked me "what's your talent?" I said "I can do seamstress work, but none of me teachers think I can do it." The elderly said "they failed, they don't want you to succeed." I didn't believe her. I thought she was just being nice to make me happy.
After watching this documentary I've realised I'm very much needed in the fashion industry. I think I'm going to get into the fashion industry. But I won't use my real name. I don't need failures that have used, and bullied me to sabotage me.

Alexa speaks really well and wastes no time in getting to the heart of the matter. I am very impressed. I stumbled upon this series and I had heard of her but that was all. This is very good fashion journalism. What do people do? Stand around ? No. I am looking forward to the rest of this series. Fashion is big in Tokyo where I live

If it's someones work/bread and butter, its serious to them. You can't compare it to medicine; its an unfair comparison because they're two very different things.

I work in the fashion industry in LA. I love this, I can't explain to people who ask about my job, how it's more than playing with fabric, and putting clothes on models. It's art, it's mathematics,it's exhausting, it's invigorating and yes some days I wish I was saving lives. But then I remember how, what I help create affects other people. Thank you for This video.

In a way, it does save lives. Fashion kept me very occupied and working and learning when my family life was awful. It gave me a place to go for sanity and Inspiration. Everything we that comes from a place of joy is helpful to someone.

I am a Fashion major, Fibers minor at SCAD and prior to watching this I was still unsure of what I wanted to do in the fashion industry. I came from a very middle class, Midwestern upbringing which questioned the practicality of fashion as a career. However, the insight this documentary provided clarified my goal for the future, I am so excited to see where fashion goes and how powerful it will become as the world changes.

What I loved the most about this documentary (which was fantastic btw) .. is that Fashion makes no excuses anymore,... IT IS an Art form .. as well as "performance art". An Artist doesn't concern themselves about being too superficial, so why should fashion, .. and I feel like this was the main point? This was really inspiring, thank you Alexa and VOGUE!
This was actually fun to watch. Alexa is a bit snarky but not so much that her comments arm inappropriate or annoying. In fact I really enjoyed her humour.

I like that these videos are long, like movies kind of long. It's so satisfying. Plus Alexa Chung is so bubbly and fresh.
Haha, Alexa imitating Said and the french accent at 1:02:22 was perfect, especially how that came back up in their conversation right after. She's a great interviewer/host.
The Jacquemus part, is very relevant about fashion in France. Everybody sees Paris as the city of chic clothes, and couture, and high end fashion, but actually, i feel like the fashion field in France, is really restrctive. We don't have the same fashion inspiration as in London, not as popular, but more with a "prestige" image. That's may be why it is, so difficult to have access to the fashion world in France. But I think it's a shame, and a lack of interest in new talents and in new styles of styling. UK now takes over the industry, and french people are now more interested in the english way to dress up, because it's a lot more open minded, i think.

I think it’s not necessarily only in the UK, though it’s a very good example.
But the French are neally caught up in the buaa esa side of things and in the heritage, whereas the UK invests money and tries to promote young creators so that it’s visible to everyone.
Mainly the UK is interested in fashion just because they see how powerful it can be, especially in economy, which is where their interest is placed, they know how to promote and inspire.
This is just my opinion though.
As a kid I wanted to be a fashion designer (probably like a lot of girls), I used to draw outfits a lot. In high-school I learned how to make patterns and garments on my own (my mom also knew how). My path led me towards an art education, while tempted to pursue a fashion major, I ultimately chose Fine Arts. As a true introvert and not the most high energy person, illustration feels like the best career for me. And maybe one day I can create patterns or designs that will be on clothes and this will be my contribution to the industry.

like i love to wear clothes and to style my self and to see whats trending....ect but when i see all these ppl in the industry talking about how fashion is for everyone and doesn t matter your background , i just keep asking my self why they make their products extra expensive that most ppl can t afford and i know that if they made their prices so low and affordable for the majority the brand/designer will loose its value on ppl s eyes but still .

In household names, or in small brands, they put a lot of accent in the quality of products. As a result, each piece costs more to make than, say, a dress from a big company , like, idk,H&M; its products being made in China at 0,70$ per piece and then sold at a price of 30$ in a shop (plus paying workers, taxes, transport,etc). Understandably, these small companies or maybe big ones but well-known of high end products, will make less pieces and each one will take more money to make. So they'll have to sell it at a higher price, taking into account that it takes more work and manufacturing than the other ones. However, I do agree w you on the fact that lots of them sell also the brand and the name, like LV,YSL, Gucci etc etc
These people don't mass produce their stuff tho like Primark etcdoes, all made abroad by workers who get paid next to nothing. (which is horrid)
Although I agree with you and prices should be lower, it's unrealistic to have designers and retail stores be the same price.
Fashion is for everyone as in clothing choice (or style) is for everyone. Whether you wear nothing but leaves or the most expensive clothing, you are making a fashion choice and/or statement. It is in that sense that fashion is for everyone. It does not mean everyone can afford everything. With regards to pricing, regardless of how much it cost the big houses or designers to produce an item, the bottom line is if you think it expensive, you are probably not the target market. The same way one person could find the cost of a private jet expensive and another won't.
this was sooo great, and informative, when I was a kid thinking about pursing a career in fashion this would have answered every single question i had that would keep me up at night. Really motivating! and I would love to hear more from designers like Shayne Oliver whose social media presence and pulse on internet trends really helped them break new ground in fashion and build their brand.

This is an interesting marketing/pr piece to counterbalance the criticism of the industry. It largely ignores the fact that many of the negative stereotypes of the fashion industry are rooted in FACTS supported by thousands of people over many decades. Alexa is white (passing), tall and naturally thin, done. Minus one of those qualifiers her experience of the industry and access to the industry would be very different. Even the admission of nonavailability of formal information for the lay person to access employment in the industry is an indictment. I did enjoy Olivier Rousteing input.
Oooh YES! Nail on the head. It's an extremely elitist industry, has always been and will always be. Rich people, those that can afford to consume gigantically, aim to be conspicuous in their consumption and exclusionary in their circles.
I love this series. I'm not even on a fashion career path but I still found it super informative. Well done!

I've worked in architecture/engineering my whole life and after 15 years I'm throwing it all away to venture into fashion, Ive always loved fashion but like the question Alexa asked.. "is there money in fashion , that parents wouldn't support their children going into fashion"... the answer is .. the Fahsion industry is bigger than the automobile industry :) yup. I'm moving in that direction.

I went to the London College of Fashion. I was offered a place at Central St Martin's but felt they didn't offer enough technical skill to help push me forward ..just a place to be super creative for three years. I wanted to have the skills to back up my ideas. We knew how to design and construct everything

Im studying fashion marketing with a minor in fashion design at SCAD and its an amazing experience :) working in fashion will kick your ass though haha. You really have to love it because it isn't easy! A lot of late hours and pricking your fingers with needles but you make the best of friends that way :)

I grew up admiring Zandra Rhodes and Bill Gibb and Tommy Nutter but today people hardly know them ! makes me feel old. I remember going to a party at Bruce Oldfields with Celia Birtwell and Hockney and spending the evening sitting on a Lalanne sheep talking to a Harpers & Queen journalist. It was the 70's and there were not the barriers that there are today. I was a student, unconscious of my luck, finding the extraordinary just 'normal' everyday ! I needed money so I went to a fashion journal and asked to illustrate for them and they said yes and sent me off the Browns to sit in the shop and draw the clothes, a shop that I couldn't afford to enter ! I became friends with all the editors, it was great fun. When I did my show I needed leather so I wrote to a tanning factory and asked if they would do me a deal and they sent me a TON of free leather, my teachers couldn't believe it. I got all my linen from habitat on the Kings road when I told the manager that I loved it and wanted to use it in my show. He gave me an 80% discount ! Those were the days. In my first year I was first in the class but as I didn't go on to become a designer who cares!
Such an insightful documentary! As an independent jewellery designer I know the feeling of my work not achieving the same recognition, by my parents for instance, as a "normal 9-5 job". I can only second some of the comments made in the series, recognise your passion and find ways to follow it.

Gabriella 69 because fashion is supposed to be for everyone yet the industry isn’t representative of that, for the most part, brands have only shown what they want their society looks like, and for the most part, it’s blonde models that all have similar facial features and similar body sizes. Yet despite the lack of diversity, brands have no problem stealing ethnic prints, ethnic fashions, and appropriate (nothing wrong with inspiration but there is a problem with taking something and selling it as your own idea) the clothing of other cultures, that’s why the industry is racist and that’s why it’s important.

Found this series so insightful, I would like to see more on the design side of things though as I am currently a fashion/textile design student. I would like to know the best ways to get noticed as a designer to other companies and also what they look for in your work. Would also be interesting to see what it's like to start off as an intern.
