While Dallos may not be the most amazing OVA series out there, it did help pioneer the direct to video market, which brought about some of my most favorite anime productions of the 80's. There was alot of experimentation in those days that really pushed the boundaries of what an anime could be.
Your Oshii series is giving me an excuse to check out some of his earlier work lol, currently up to Urusei yatsura #44 and feels like the series is really finding a cool identity. Great video as usual!
@ indeed but with a megazone 23 reboot being developed with updates frequently on aic’s website and Patlabor EZY set for 2026, there’s this extremely minuscule stupid amount of hope Dallos could get the same treatment, it obviously never will, but it’s fun to think about it. But again neither of the series I mentioned have been released yet and it’s taken an agonizing long time for Patlabor to even go into production and the megazone reboot is still in planning after being announced in 2017.
@@elijahguest1885 yeah there's technical issues there since head gear owns patlabor they've been trying to reboot for a while then the whole covid thing happened on top of trying to find a studio and slot. where megazone is a mess because the company is in tatters and has been sold a bunch of times, so no idea how functional there production pipeline is now. dallos i think is owned by bandai and theyve asked oshii about it prior i vaguely recall but he said no never

You are my favorite channel for in-depth anime retrospectives no question. I introduced your channel to my good friend who sadly passed away early this year. He said your entire series on Anno was his favorite.
It's always good to see that you're still drawing. I had tendinitis in the middle of my 2019 concept art course, so even though I tried learning in 2020 I didn't have the Resolve to keep going so I eventually transitioned to Blender but now I'm finally starting to incorporate more 2D elements into my 3D art so I'm pretty motivated by the artists like you, I've been following that I see myself in their journey.
I watched Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai (Maroko) recently; one of the wildest and strangest OVA’s I think I’ve seen. I just looked it up and saw Oshi made that one as well. Hopefully we get to hear what Mr. STEVEM has to say about that one. Thanks for you hard work sir; you’re my favorite Animation/Anime guy here on the RUclips.
I may talk about it in some way but im not sure how it will take form yet it may end up as a section in the bigger compilation video since there's not a ton out there on the movie to make it a standalone picture
@@Stevem oh damn I was really eager to see how the part of the retrospective about gosenzosama would end up because of how little it get talked about and how much it deserves to be, but i understand there's a lot to talk about when doing that kind of retrospective and that not every work can have its own 20 minutes episode haha
You are one of my favourite anime youtubers. Your videos have been so helpful for learning about the history of anime, I always recommend you to people i know. Keep up the good work.
i don’t know what i did to get in gods favor but this series started coming out right when i started my Mamoru Oshii marathon like I got the perfect timing
I'm trying to understand more about all things anime and your videos have been helpful in making connections to things I know absolutely nothing about. Looking forward to learning more about Oshii.
Haven't seen Dallos in ages, despite the alien mystery and political drama im not sure if i managed to finish it without an unexpected nap lol. The dogs with the red eye pieces are pretty much the Kerberos saga though. That graph was interesting because it feels like the OVA died more suddenly than the decline it showed, but that is because OVAs became a tie-in, another piece in the media mix, while for a good while they were standalone works or the only adaptation of a substantial manga that wasn't gonna get a tv anime.
one of the first OVAs is Mami and Urusei Yatsura followed shortly after there was absolutely franchise projects alongside some more niche adaptations there
One thing, MSG was a giant toy commercial. The original pre production designs are all super robot stuff but Tomino wanted to make the robots into military vehicles and not magical robots. He at first tried to push his idea but it was rejected. That is why the White Base and Gundam have those colors. It is why the G-BULL exist which he changed in the movies to the Core Booster. Tomino was able to manage all the toy people and give them what they wanted and also change the series to be the first real robot anime show ever. OVAs are one of the reasons anime got more serious in the late 80s and 90s since companies could target the audience directly with sales instead of being at the mercy of toy companies and TV channels. Once the OVAs started to decline in the 2000s you had anime going back to being so vanilla and safe. With streaming, you know have more anime coming out that is serious again because toy and tv channels are not paying for anime but streaming companies like Netflix, Amazon and others.
Most of Gundams original issues were the toys the companies tried to sell sucked, toy companies lost their presence in the industry by the mid 80s, allegedly some went bankrupt but the amount of them funding mecha for tv was declining which was commented on in animage at the time. Oshii said toy companies in his experience are a little more free than say the production committee method. I don't know if most ovas were particularly daring either even in 1985 the majority of them were just adaptations of other mediums or follow ons from anime already airing on tv. While there were ones that went a bit out there, i don't think they were ever a majority. If anything in the industry was a unifying force against creativity it would been the production committee methods vice grip. What really began to replace ovas in the late 90s, was that the works for niche audiences started to be shown on late night tv blocks that were cheap to pick up opposed to direct video. TV anime demographic charts would say that the move over to mature audiences went from about 90% children demo in 2000 to about 50% between children and older by 2006.
Also MSG was a series not 3 movies. Compressed to 3 movies later to reach a wider audience, to remove some poorly animated scenes, and tighten up some plot.
@Greyawlno who is saying it wasn't a TV show, the movies are when it became popular, women are the audience that kept the franchise alive within that time between those two
nice work on the video production. I don't know if you do the handwritten animations, but they are a very nice touch. You also have a good speaking voice and dictation. I loved Dallos. The English dub wasn't very good, yet the story was engaging and the animation was lightyears from the 1960's and 70's style. I was disappointed at the ending as it seemed to set up for a sequel yet never delivered or maybe it was just the English dubbing and editing.
