The stainless steel one has such a lovely mellow sound.
insane sustain
@@TheCreedBratton thx creed
the stainless steel one was very nice and warm sounding. when i get the money i was definitely thinking of picking up a handpan
Jay! Not sure if you still see these posts but WOW!!! Seriously. Thank you taking the time to explain these different materials and then demo them live. Going to email you to learn more. Big Thanks!! Terry
Great demonstration too, thanks for that!
Thank you for the demo, it is very helpful!
Great comparison. Thank you so much
Excellent tour of the different tones. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this. It’s super interesting! I’m surprised by the sound of the stainless steel one, really impressive result. ☺️ (the first two are also really nice). Good work, really! 😊👍🏼
Excellent description!!!
I really enjoyed the raw steel hand sunk
Dude. Cool presentation. Great instruments.
great vid, it shows that different materials give different atmospheres, i like the staineless steel one, but also the more snappy nitrided
Good sound! Thank you!
I enjoyed and of course it was helpful.♥️
Great comparison. Thanks for this.
elioli123 thank you in glad you liked it!
Those two in front of the camera sounds best!
Yup, the stainless one sounds amazing!!
Thank you Sébastian 👍😁👍
I'm surprised this only has 500 views. This is a great display of the different materials. Have you tried to hydroform a stainless steel shell?
Thanks for all the work. :)
Brynn Clingwall thank you Brynn 👍😁👍
Fast forward 5 years... 28k views :)
thanks for your video
Very nice comparison mate!
Saraz Handpans thanks guys! 😁😁😁
Thanks Jay for the comparisons they really do highlight the quite noticeable differences.
I have in my collection a raw, nitride and stainless and l can definitely confirm what you are describing.
I will say that l was mostly drawn to the handsunk raw pan. It has a very natural, balanced and vibrant sound. I was surprised by the nitride as mine definitely sounds different in the way it sings out with bloom and reverse harmonics sort of in between your stainless and raw sunken. Thanks though and your playing was much appreciated 🙏😊🙌👍
very much informative. Thanks. Love from India
I definitely enjoy the stainless sound the best. De stainless steel klinkt geweldig. Die rostfreie Stahl Dum klinkt am besten. Himmlisch. Aber wie der Himmel ausser meiner Reichweite! Danke fürs Teilen. Thank you for sharing this.
That rustic gold one is BEAUTIFUL. That’s my choice
stainless steel shell i would go for sounds better
They all sound great! I think the stainless the best but I wonder if the placement of the mic had an effect on the sound.
I may have just found my thing omg
I love the second one
lol…now you have to update with Ember and Titan Steel … what’s next? Beautiful sound … by the way … on that stainless! 🥰🛸🎶🦋
Titan steel? I heard someone make reference to that recently but I don’t think I actually know what it is - who is building with it?
@@Acolyteinstruments …Rebecca Paige … Spirit Handpan …. She had one at PanMarco and I have to say, it was pretty darn nice … I have 2 Dms already, your PC and an Arcana in Stainless, but if I didn’t, it was definitely sweet enough that I would have walked out with it!! 😊🛸🎶🦋
@@thathandpanlady4510 interesting - I’ll have to check it out
Wow.
Fascinating! I definitely enjoy the stainless sound the best. Are they all the same gauge?
ReubenRabinowitz yes they are all 18gauge - glad you liked the video 👍😁👍
The handsunk ones sounded the better for me, both better in their own aspects, can’t choose one though.
Can you explain to us what is hydroformed and deep drawn?
Congratulations! Questiona:Wich microphone and camera did you use? Very nice sound man
Phelipe Agnelli I use a Zoom Q8 with the on board mics
Stainless Steel suits my audible taste.
Superb analysis and comparison. Would you be so kind as to explain what the base terms mean, such as “nitrided,” “hydrosunk," "handsunk,” “raw steel,” and “stainless”? This nomenclature may be common parlance to handpan makers, but not so self-evident to the uninitiated consumer. I’m in the market for my first handpan, and I am finding the process overwhelming at best. It’s difficult enough identifying a reputable maker, committing to a scale, and dealing with almost nonexistent availability. Some vendors won’t even let buyers get on a wait list, preferring to sell on a "flash sale" basis only. Weighing the intricacies of materials, surface treatments, and manufacturing methods puts the decisioning process out of reach for me. Your insight and perspectives will be deeply appreciated.
SuperPussyFinger there are a few different types of treatments of the steel itself - Raw steel(untreated), stainless steel, and nitrided steel(gas heat treatment) without getting into the science behind the treatment they create different types of tones for the instrument over all - they also have different amounts of care that are needed - raw steel needs to be lubricated VERY regularly and even then may rust eventually, nitrided steel needs to be lubricated less often than raw steel as it has some protection from the elements but can still rust if not properly cared for, stainless steel doesn’t “rust” per say however I recommend it still be lubricated from time to time. I also now use a brand new treatment called PC steel (not in this video) that NEVER needs to be lubricated and requires the least amount of care. Handsunk vs hydro are the methods used to turn sheets of steel into the shell or bowl shape that we start making an instrument with. Handsunk is literally doing this by hand with hand hammers or pneumatic hammers. Hydrosinking is a process using machinery to blow steel up like a ballon. Your first handpan purchase can seem a bit overwhelming but there is no need to stress - if you have any other questions feel free to email me any time at NirvanaHandpan@gmail.con
And the "winner" is...stainless...for me sure 👍
a copper one a crystal one 😳 🤩
most of what I noticed was the difference in the overtone 'singing' sound. The hydroformed had a little and you definitely heard the finger strike. The handsunk raw steel one had so much it was almost distracting. When you played the center note it was all you really heard. It had the least sound of the actual strike though. The stainless seemed to be the best balanced in that regard and the sustain was the best. The nitrided steel one sounded muted and flat to me with almost no overtone. I take into account that your mic placement, whatever RUclips did to the sound, and my own speakers entered into things, but if anything that muted the differences.
exactly my thoughts!
💜💜💜💜
I prefer hydro sunk or hand sunk
You did not do any slaps on the stainless. Is that because it doesn’t produce the cool sound? You seemed to be really enjoying playing the nitrided the most! I appreciate this comparison very much!
It’s stainless for me. Oh my, I’m about to spend a lot of money!
Great! Thank for sharing. Amazing stainless! Raw also, both, but nitrited is have so dry sound. Why?
IVA Rus well part of it may be where it is in the room, but each builder will tune different materials differently. That particular one just isn't as resonant
I believe was as you say the position of the handpan so far away from the mic. I own a nitrided handpan and is wonderful.
I’m confused. You said the first was raw steel hydroformed, second raw steel hand sunk, third and forth stainless steel and nitrided steel but you didn’t say how they were sank. Not sure why you would leave that bit of information out in an educational video, seems important. Other than that I enjoyed the video. Thx
what about the powder coated? Does it change the sound characteristics?
2 and 3 for me please!!!
Amazing work! How do you prevent the raw steel from rusting?
Joe Fajkowski you have to keep raw steel lubricated to prevent rust.
Stainless steel for sure hands down much more life and sustain is superb compared to the rest
Hi! What kind of alloy is the steel?
Ok but do you have an album
So what is PC steel? Thats the one i just ordered from nirvana! Super cheap so fingers crossed
You got scammed if you got something super cheap
why does there have to be a dimple in the center of each note? Why can't it just be flat?
Hip Hop Handpan it can be flat but the central dimple creates a different timber and adds stability to the note
do u tune used pans , i hav a 9 note terratonzes - the ding & 2 'bass' notes are ok - middle sized notes 1 of 2 are ok - the high notes are off a bit - so i never play it - the high notes seem to high & kind of useless . i wish they were deeper or more versatile ...
could you re-tune it to A=432hz ? unless u think it will lose richness
new paint job ? or lazer art - or anti-rust seal -
can u add notes or only when it's new fresh metal - notes ur making $ , - what if i bought a drum , 1,365 is that the 7-8 note , no high notes in the vid ? - in the asked questions somebody said wait & get more notes -
are there any tuners in maryland on the east coast - it's rusting - needs2be sand blasted or sanded down so it stops eating it's self , maybe ur CS SC coated version u do -
whats the trick , oil lit on fire . or is it for color
ruclips.net/video/cBTOp6pAEts/видео.html checkout this duel ding
I do retunes for other instruments on a case by case basis - 440 to 432 is usually doable - email info@acolyteinst.com for retune questions
What about pc steel?
The sound on this isnt coming through loud enough
