I just ordered the inexpensive Hluru tongue drum, 5 minutes ago, and I was like "OMG what if it sounds like garbage?!!?". So I found your videos here, and it put my worries to rest. No, it doesn't sound as full as the other ones, but this is my first one, and I just want something to noodle around with. Thanks for taking the time!
They're all great in different ways. I really love the handpan sound but you can't beat a steel tongue drum for ruggedness and transportability. Great video.
The difference? About a grand. In al seriousness, I think the tongue drum is the way to go first. And if your interest does not wane, then save for the hand pan. If you really love the art, you’re going to want to keep both instruments anyway and will likely collect them over time. Consider the tongue drum an investment and “gateway” instrument into the field.
I am hooked on Kosmosky Tongue Drums. I ordered the Symphony which is the 15" New Wave and a 13" New Wave that compliments it. I ordered the Woody the other day. I also have another one planned for a future purchase.
I just stumbled on to this video. Being curious, I clicked on it, and I love the sound of these Hand pans. So relaxing and I really liked the last one. Can I stream this type of music? I believe this has the ability to solve my insomnia problem. 😊
Hey Molly. Thank you very much for the video! And the information about each tongue drum/hand pan.And where to get one. The "14 Kosmosky "14 Tundra sounds amazing! I think that's the one for me.Thanks again and take care. Evan.
About the instruments, they all sound so different to me. It's as if they're the musical equivalent of different genres of movies, each with a character and influence of their own.
Thank you so much! This was a major help to me. I'm getting one of these for a gift to give a friend the push she needs to gather her confidence and try playing this instrument that she liked for a while now and I had no clue what the difference was among these. Great and very helpful video! Also you're very talented!
2nd one was the best imo. First one was meh, 2nd one blew my mind. 3rd and 4th were ok but not as good as the 2nd. Going into this I was not expecting to prefer this one. This is good for my wallet!
t my first drum it is Rav Vast Integral B scale Rav Vast RAV2 21" hand pan steel tongue drum. It's mesmerizing but not very loud. I bought this scale because it sounds like the place you get to when you are deep in mediation and u have arrived in the center and are floating. the integral B scale doesn't seem to play well with my drum mate she has a d major scale hang pan like your entre level one here in the video. I felt a little like I made the wrong choice in drums because she gets such a louder sound. However, after seeing your video I realize I did not. I may just need to invest in mallets thank you for the video Molly keep up the great work
I just got a cheapie tongue drum and am starting to explore, but that higher-end drum really shines. If I get into it, I may need to buy one of those. However, for meditative purposes, even the cheapie is pretty nice.
Thanks for the comparison Molly. I really like the sound of the Kosmosky you had there. I looked up their store ...... what version/model did you demonstrate??? Thanks.
I'm pricing each type and find the Hand Pans are way more expensive for a low end one. Thats why I'm hear to see the differences. Too much sustain sound on that expensive Tongue one for Me. Glad I got to hear it.
it's tuned to have more sustain with the extra cutts in the tongue. they also sell them without, plus you can get a costumized one picked a tuning and everything. i ordered mine a week or so ago and theyre now making it for me
well done, Molly. I do hope you invest in a Ravvast as your next entry to your collection. I think you'll really enjoy the sustain it is almost the size of your handpans and pretty heavy. but such nice sound
Could you elaborate more? For example what is the difference in playing them not considering sound? Which is easier to play? Can you Tune a hand pan? I prefer the sound of hand pan but because of costs I guess I’ll first learn the cheaper tongue drum? Does that make sense?
Definitely get a rav they are epic love mine the rav g pygmy and in my opinion is the only tongue drum that is a worthy comparison to the handpan though that kosmosky is a good runner up but love to see a comparison with the hluru and guda drum love your channel by the ways has been so useful thank you 😊🤘
Can I get an akin sound to the hand pan in Sphongle's "Nothing is something worth doing" with a tongue drum? And if so, what brand and makes should I look at?
If the newly ordered handpan came with traces of rust-like patches (it is colored in navy), and the turn at the neck shows the inside may have the dusty patches (similar to rust), is it a concern and a reason to return? Or is oiling it and caring properly going to make it last well? This was a gift, and it’s my first handpan too, in the mid tier cost (600s).
Hello! Thank you for this great presentation. I would like to buy one for my 3 Year Old sun, so I think the cheaper will be ok, but it is not available in Amazon. Can you suggest me an other one please? Thank you. Marianne
Great comparison! I would love to learn the handpan but a bit worried about disturbing my neighbours! Do you know how much the sound travels through walls of an older building? Or whether it's possible to hire one to try it out? Also, once the handpan goes a bit out of tune is it possible to tune it or do you have to buy a new one? Thanks
I am not sure with the mass produced handpans, but I believe with the artisan handpans you send them back to the maker to be re-tuned (for a price unfortunately).
So a tongue drum "tone field" (which is each of the circles) is tuned to 3 different notes usually. Cheaper Handpans will only tune 1 or 2 notes in there, but the characteristic handpan sound comes from the 3 tuned notes resonating together in each time field.
@@MusicalMollyKhan with the different sizes what is the range without a mic for indoors or out. For a crowd of about 25-100 people, or 100-200 people. and sometimes 500 plus? Would a 12 or 16'' be good without a mic 100-200 size crowd.
Yeah, those things can easily range $1000-3000 USD. I've been reading about them recently to better understand, and heard that some of the best are often individually hand crafted per order, and can take 1-3 months to finish. You can, of course, probably find some manufactured types that are cheaper... But I take the fact that they're generally much larger, more fragile, and made from precisely shaped metal rather than cut holes to all factor into why they're in the 'fancy instrument' price range.
I've been trying to see maybe a Hand pan that sounds similar to a Handpan.. its sad that with every thing going on most the most beautiful drums are in Russia or ukraine.Ukraine.. etc so I feel it's risky to buy from them
I want to know is how no one who plays these even acknowledge that steel drums in the Carribean are basically the same thing as these except played on the other side.
Just fyi…..It HAS been acknowledged … world wide … the handpan was actually invented in Switzerland by steel drum tuners in the year 2000. … those involved in the handpan community learn that very quickly …

It's so true! There are definitely pros and cons to each 😊
The difference between the first and second tongue drum ia staggering. Kosmovsky sounds mucch clearer and ethereal than the dull first one
Were you happy with it?
I like the clean sound of the Amazon one better than the expensive one, where the sound lasts too long and the notes mix.
Oodle lolly Molly has some killer drums. I totally needed to hear the difference. Thanks for making this video.
Wow the difference is phenomenal 💜
Thank you for having put this demo out and teaching as succinctly as you could. Your demo surprised me.
I really love the Kosmosky tongue drums....such a beautiful sound. I have ordered the Woody and the DvUaltone and hope to get the 2 sided
They are so beautiful! I hope you love them 😊
Thank you for explaining the differences. Each beautiful in their own ways.
The difference? About a grand.

Thanks so much for the comparisons Molly. I'm considering my choices again. And so nice you are ;-).
Beautifully presented, thank you!

Excellent tutorial. I love the higher end tongue drum sounds, than the bigger handpan. Aloha from Hawaii.

seems like a high end tongue drum with harmonics is the long term festival bound instrument choice
It is a fantastic choice! It sounds beautiful and is definitely less prone to damage over time 😊
Lots of great info in your videos, thank you.
I'm curious as to what you're using for audio pickup in these videos... a specific mic/set of mics/etc?
I had recently copped a Steel Tongue from Amazon for $70, but wow.... the DIFFERENCE in sound between the Amazon and the Kosmoski is WILD! lol

what does it mean "harmonics built into it"??

nice presentation, exhibition, thanks!
Pour le kosmossky ? Lequel tu as dans le video ....je vois qu il y a plusieurs ton ....merci de me répondre 😇🥰💖
Thanks for this video,... really helpful for me.
I couldn’t find the cheaper tongue drum on Amazon, I specifically want one with harmony notes.
I need at least five of those in different tuning ;)

Love your giggling, hahah
Thanks a bunch!
In what tone is your Kosmosky tongue pan?
Do you know the scale of the notes on the Kosmoski? like the name of the scale?
That's great thanks 😍
The difference is significant, the last (more expensive one) is my favorite! p.s. You are very cute!
Needed this video
You're such a lovely person

I'd say get a cheap one and give it a go. If you're worried about neighbors just don't play really early or late.
I think you'll find they won't mind.
I am not sure with the mass produced handpans, but I believe with the artisan handpans you send them back to the maker to be re-tuned (for a price unfortunately).
**munches on black licorice and enjoys the drum sounds** nom noms

Molly, which Kosmosky Drum is that? What scale?
Kosmosky Dvutone B-minor 11-a! There's a link in the description as well 😊
What does it mean when you say harmonics built in?
