Worst case scenario you'll need a soldering iron to desolder.
I sanded an AirTag down to make it a bit smaller, wrapped it in duct tape and jammed it up the steerer tube. It’s black tape so you’d need a torch and to remove the wheel to find it.
Thanks for the tutorial! The operation appears to be a success. I've asked my husband to take my now mute airtag to work with him tomorrow so I can double check that it is truly tracking after getting in its innards. I don't have access to a 3D printer so I found a water bottle carrier that has a discreet space that I can place it and have it still sitting flush against the frame (there are some that fit under it but they look like they be too easily spotted by someone who knows what to look for.) My new e-bike is ordered and the bike shop is waiting for it so they can assemble it. I'll take the bottle holder over to their shop and they can install it when they're getting my bike ready. The only thing that concerns me is that the bottle holder comes with anti-theft screws for installation and that might offer a hint to have a closer look.
Also. Use torx screws instead of the standard allen key heads and cinch them down with blue loctite. This makes it much more difficult for them to remove the tag once they have found it. It won't prevent tampering entirely, but it will likely buy you an hour or so while they try to figure out a way to get the tag off.

You really need to make it harder to remove the tag . E.g. use security bolts or put some glue on them, else this is too easy for the thief. Also, in this location they could easily break them away, I'd make a holder that can go somewhere it's hard to apply force. Ah yes, and get rid of the quick release levers if you want to keep your wheels and saddle.
So your solution is just to disable the speaker? Been done, AirTags can still be located down to around 30cm, good enough to find it on a bike and probably in a car too. Use Atuvos tags instead, licensed by Apple to use the same Find My network but half the price and don’t have the same precision locating capability, only good down to a couple of meters, still good enough to locate an object as big as a bike but not good enough to find the tag itself if the speaker is disabled. The in the seatpost would work if you have a carbon bike. I am thinking of dropping it in the down tube of the bike and when needed have to remove the headset, tilt the bike to obtain it again. It will be inside the bike frame.
Great tips thanks! I use black tape and either tape under my bike seat or under the fork. Your idea is great too and I believe there’s a company that make one like yours with a reflector which is also a great decoy.
They need to design something smaller for bicycles. I suppose if your seat isn't too expensive put a slit under the saddle place the AirTag inside and touch it up with some black silicone. Do this with the seat off and directly under the clamp area (safer and harder to spot). As long as it is a generic cushion seat it'll work but if it's a high end leather or super thin racing saddle you'd be outta luck. Normally you never leave your expensive bikes alone, at least I don't .
You used the wrong screws. You want to use the Allen screws that have the security bump. They require removal only with the Allen wrench that has a small dimple on the head. Regular Allen cannot grip!
I have one under my water bottle which seems too obvious. I think a 2nd one - with speaker deactivated - wrapped into the handlebar tape would be solid. Has anyone ever placed on inside a tire?
I have removed the speaker as per the instructions, but if I make the AirTag chime I can still hear it albeit very faintly. I've tested this several times. Maybe something inside still acts as a (poor) speaker even when the real one is removed?
Yes. Just remove the thin copper wire that causes the sound. There are RUclips videos for that. I just did it to mine. No sound and location still works.
The chime makes it easier to find, but it isn’t hard to find an AirTag without a chime on a bike. It’s not like there are that many places to hide it. You’re only real option is to react quickly if your bike is stolen. If you wait until the thief’s iPhone notifies them an AirTag is moving with them, you will be too late. An AirTag with or without a chime is not that hard to find on a bike.
your video just have one problem you should not mount your airtag outside your bike but need to be inside your bike,"INSIDE" your bicycle frame i drilled very tiny tiny hole so signal is not a problem , FORK, seat post , inside your bicycle saddle , inside handle bar remember "INSIDE" just make sure it stay hidden ,I manage to put 4 apple airtag and 2 momax Pintag "INSIDE MY BIKE " total six air tag I gotta say im very impress with the result it help track my bike within 3 hours after it got stolen last week and call police to help recover my bike within 5 hours it got stolen , and catch the thief
Has anyone considered the ability to disassemble a certain kind of pedal, place the airtag or whatever and reassemble it ? I would think pedals are kind of universal so just finding a certain brand that has enough of a gap somewhere,
The bttom of the suspension seat post I thought was a really great idea as well, but while some people say on there Ebike it works without signal interference, the RUclipsr uploader said that would not work, so at this very moment, I happen to be noticing a carbon fiber frame Ebike, I'll provide the link, (just thinking out loud for some who think this type of lighter frame might not block the bluetooth signal due to it's thinner material? ) no idea if that makes any sense, because while the frames are lighter, maybe that offers no advantage when it comes to signal blocking, anyway, very unqiue bike in the under 1,000 range because of the 20AMP battery, ruclips.net/video/r8JCXfpje-s/видео.html
cool, here is another dumb idea, I just thought about, (under one of the front or backtire fenders?) if the back of the airtag can't have crazy glue or superglue applied directly to it, maybe it could go inside of some type of other tiny plastic or metal container that could have glue applied to its surface, (you know like those cheap magnetic key containers, people slide under the car (especiall if you upgrade to metal fenders) whathever the best approach would be the important thing to worry about is how well it's hidden probably at the middle of the fender in something black so it's maybe camouglaged by the all black fender, But if metal fenders interfere with any tracking signal than switch it to a plastic fender. For maximum adhesiion I would apply several layers of glue on a table, or if your really handy, try and solder or hotglue it to the plastic fender. Obviously you'de want to test the adhesion and be prepared to lose the airtag in the street or offroad, as your going through the ''testing stage'' of this idea. I've heard of people even installing two or three of them on the same bike.
Also don't foget even if Iphone's were 75% of the smartphone market (which the are not!) you still have a 25% chance of zero recovery unless you employ Android tracking devices as well, I'm wondering if the seat post blocking is greater or lesser with Non Apple Airtag trackers as well ??
Apple should give the owner of the AirTag an option feature in the Settings allowing them to turn on/off the beeper on the AirTag. Also, if I owned a really expensive bike I’d likely install TWO AirTags on it!
@@John64125they should make a feature where each time the owner is around they have to take a photo of where they placed it to confirm, for ex. If installed on a bike A photo with the AirTag on the bike is required to activate it and every 48-72 hours the owner should have to take a verification photo
It is still possible to locate AirTag using precise finding (available on iPhone11 and later). Actually it is possible to create an AirTag clone tracker which will be not detectable by phones automatically (iPhone will not notify you). So it there are significant demand it is possible to start manufacturing.
I agree with others; a little overboard. There are only so many locations an airtag can be hidden on a bicycle. Disabling the chime won't get you much more time. Once I knew there was an airtag it would probably take me only a few minutes to find it. Overkill might be a better option. Locating and removing five airtags might take the better part of half an hour.
@@psps6623 this did not work for one of our clients who was attempting to retrieve their stolen motorcycle, the police would not accept the location of knowing where the bike was as proof.
I tried inside the stem but I failed to make contact with a phone. Down the seat tube works if the post is big enough, 27.2 won't work. Hiden isnide the steer tube would work but it was too small to fit down the tube and inside the headset also prevented contact.
MucOff now makes one that fits on the end of a valve stem inside a tubeless tire. I wonder if your seat tube holder would work inside a carbon fiber frame?
So the sound is from the coil and the magnet is needed to amplify it. The gold coil which the magnet would sit in, there is 2 ends of the coil. I snipped 1 end.
very good video clear and concise . however if and when you do locate your bike ,you had better take some muscle with you in case a confrontation erupts or the police , but it's highly unlikely that the police will show up ,so you are on your own .
Airtags are inappropriate devices for anti-theft purposes, as they will still report their presence to any iPhone user even if you disable the speaker. Tile trackers are much better in this respect, as they have a specific anti-theft mode where this behavior is suppressed.
If I had stolen an expensive bike and got such a notification the seat would be the first thing to fly off. Especially if there is some obviously 3D printed attachment to it
No, no! This is the only way to find a bike with playing the sound when needed. In Oulu Finland we have a group which tracks stolen bikes. They have about 2000 bikes record in a year getting them back! Favorite thing is to locate bikes and play sound in front of some locked door and call cops. The group works with a lot of people in Facebook and social media. If someone sees something, volunteers sends a message to the group with photos etc. The group already know all the places where to look at when the bike theft happens. Amazing group indeed.
Maybe there is a better tracker to use other than the airtag then. It would be a better bet because those trackers have to be found physically in most cases.
Don't hack it? I belive its not that expensive of a mistake 25 pounds. I have done this for my family and friends like 8 maybe didn't break a single plastic prong. Works amazingly

Ideally Apple could do with a system that uses other Apple products to locate, however without potentially letting others know where it is, only the owner. If the owner has the option to control if all have the option to see or only themselves this would provide more notice for stollen products to be found. A thief will absolutely expect some kind of device & would naturally check the bike, getting rid of anything strait away.
Yeah: for once Some is trying to do the right thing: to balance the needs of the owner of the object the Airtag is attached to with the owner of the Airtag. It's fine when it's the same owner; it's creepy as soon as you attach it to something belonging to someone else.
Instead of making the airtag holder hard to spot why not integrate the rear reflector into the holder? So it's a component with a clear use and just a hidden space.

I would put it in The Handlebar post or down in the seat post where it would drop to the bottom.
@@lawrencegrace9302 too much interference, might not get a strong signal.
Don't they use something to block tracker signal when stealing more expensive things like cars and bicycles?
@@lawrencegrace9302 did you even watch the video?
Apple should listen to their customers and simply stop the alerts being sent to the thief. The Airtag is not appropriate for this purpose.
Its so predators can’t stick airtags under peoples cars and track down the woman/ child later.
Do you have the file for the air tag car you made with 3 d printer how to make one ?
On e-bike put inside locked battery compartment.
You used the wrong screws. You want to use the Allen screws that have the security bump. They require removal only with the Allen wrench that has a small dimple on the head. Regular Allen cannot grip!
Great idea - just a thought - might be helpful to use black instead of silver screws.
I have one under my water bottle which seems too obvious. I think a 2nd one - with speaker deactivated - wrapped into the handlebar tape would be solid.
Has anyone ever placed on inside a tire?
Nice video and presentation.
Shall we say muted instead of deactivated?
Hide it in the basement.........Every bicycle has a basement (@.@)
Would a carbon seat post help with the bluetooth signal if you put it in the downtube?
Unfortunately, no. CF also blocks signals.
Would carbon fiber block the signal? You said aluminum does
Could you share the 3D file you made for the print? I'd love to modify it to fit other trackers for Android users like myself
your video just have one problem you should not mount your airtag outside your bike but need to be inside your bike,"INSIDE" your bicycle frame i drilled very tiny tiny hole so signal is not a problem , FORK, seat post , inside your bicycle saddle , inside handle bar remember "INSIDE" just make sure it stay hidden ,I manage to put 4 apple airtag and 2 momax Pintag "INSIDE MY BIKE " total six air tag I gotta say im very impress with the result
it help track my bike within 3 hours after it got stolen last week and call police to help recover my bike within 5 hours it got stolen , and catch the thief
Inside the frame would work if you had a carbon bike no?
@4:23 can you share 3d print file for this tag holder? Great job!!
Has anyone considered the ability to disassemble a certain kind of pedal, place the airtag or whatever and reassemble it ? I would think pedals are kind of universal
so just finding a certain brand that has enough of a gap somewhere,
A bike pedal with an airtag holder inside would be a genius idea!
@@flolou8496 I got a carbon frame, I will try to stick it in there and report back when I get my AirTag in the mail
cool, here is another dumb idea, I just thought about, (under one of the front or backtire fenders?) if the back of the airtag can't have crazy glue or superglue applied directly to it, maybe it could go inside of some type of other tiny plastic or metal container that could have glue applied to its surface, (you know like those cheap magnetic key containers, people slide under the car (especiall if you upgrade to metal fenders) whathever the best approach would be the important thing to worry about is how well it's hidden probably at the middle of the fender in something black so it's maybe camouglaged by the all black fender, But if metal fenders interfere with any tracking signal than switch it to a plastic fender.
I think the issue is that undesirables could attach them to someone and stalk them. It’s a privacy issue!
Even if you deactivate the speaker once thief gets notification how difficult is to find the Air tag on a bike. in less than one minute
He'll still see the notification and will just search the bike thoroughly
could you share the cad file for the airtag mount on the seat?
Bonjour
Pouvez vous me donner le lien du modèle Qui ce range dans le tube du cadre du vélo en .slt?
Merci d’avance…
Where can i order this special 3d printed holder??!!!
Doesn’t the sound help to prove that it’s yours when getting the police involved though, in that you can trigger it to turn on from your app?
The proof would be you showing the location appearing on your phone and then pointing out exactly where the tracker is located on the bike.
@@psps6623 this did not work for one of our clients who was attempting to retrieve their stolen motorcycle, the police would not accept the location of knowing where the bike was as proof.
Take a picture of your serial number before it is stolen.
Hey man! Thank you for this video! This is not something everyone knows about!
I tried inside the stem but I failed to make contact with a phone. Down the seat tube works if the post is big enough, 27.2 won't work. Hiden isnide the steer tube would work but it was too small to fit down the tube and inside the headset also prevented contact.
Would a carbon fiber frame block the signal?
Nope. Non-metallic carbon fibre.
For a carbon frame there's no problem right?
What to do if the lid wouldnt be twisted??
easy to find and disable. Not a good place. Show better placement.. Inside tire? Inside handlebar ?
MucOff now makes one that fits on the end of a valve stem inside a tubeless tire. I wonder if your seat tube holder would work inside a carbon fiber frame?
Just DO NOT BUY it, period.
@@Cliff01AustinSounds like something a bike thief would say.
When it comes to tires, there's a lot hanging in the balance. You don't want to put an air tag there
Do you have use Bluetooth ?
So you sell the 3 d print holders
No
So the sound is from the coil and the magnet is needed to amplify it. The gold coil which the magnet would sit in, there is 2 ends of the coil. I snipped 1 end.
Get a bell with airtag compartment for a few pounds, it is a real bell, but has your airtag (or motorola tag) hidden inside it.
very good video clear and concise . however if and when you do locate your bike ,you had better take some muscle with you in case a confrontation erupts or the police , but it's highly unlikely that the police will show up ,so you are on your own .
0:18 "Impossible to locate it"? It still gives a message to say you're being tracked though, and then they can look for the tag 🫤
Where do I find the case ?
Does carbon fiber also block the signal? My bike is made of CF and I ma thinking of dropping the airtag inside the bar or handle
Carbon fiber will not block the signal since it is not conducting. Go for it.
Especially if there is some obviously 3D printed attachment to it
it would have made so much more sense to put a red reflector on the cover to make the whole air tag holder look like a rear light reflector.
Apple really needs to allow the user to defeat the speaker without the need for surgery to remove the speaker.
That would be called the "government and military" version 😅
but then criminals can use it to stalk someone
You're calling that step surgery? It's quicker than... inflating a tire.
@@jackl7778 If so, then couldn't criminals just remove the speaker and then use the tag to stalk?
How about inside a cheap bell housing on the handlebars?
That would be perfect, they sell foe bells for AirTags on amazon, link in description
u can even put inside your reflector around the wheel spokes
Why isn't there a simple "turn off speaker" feature on the IPhone for this
The notification to the thief ruins the usefulness of this tag. He will simply move away from populated areas and eventually find the tag.
Maybe there is a better tracker to use other than the airtag then. It would be a better bet because those trackers have to be found physically in most cases.
Thank you! I was able to remove the speaker successfully.
Great video I’m gonna do this to my bike AirTag.
don’t hack it. very expensive mistake when you break the plastic prongs, like i did, no matter how careful you are.
Don't hack it? I belive its not that expensive of a mistake 25 pounds. I have done this for my family and friends like 8 maybe didn't break a single plastic prong. Works amazingly
@@lisapilios6880lmao it’s like $30?
I broke one of the prongs does that make it not work anymore?
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for video. How far away my cell phone will be able to track this air tag? I am planning to to fly abroad with transfer flights. Do not want to lose my bike in between flites!
Bluetooth range is maybe 30 feet. But you can locate your airtag from anywhere in world, as long as there are people with iphones near.
If there is an iPhone within range it’ll update and send the info to your phone
Have a bicycle bell that hides the AirTag inside. Its made to conceal the AirTag i have also removed the speaker.Highly doubt thief will ever find it.Also have AirTag hidden in my Ortlieb panniers.I have 13 airtags so its safe to say I’m an AirTag fan LOL.Have saved me so much wasted time and frustration looking for stuff.Twice I’ve lost some very important job related keys found them hanging on mop bucket handle where they had fallen off my belt then found them dangling from a drawer pull where they had caught on it after i had leaned across counter.
what kind/brand/style of bell?
Where to buy one
Thanks SO much very helpful!
Where might I be able to buy one of those?
Link in the description for options
The AirTag presence should have the ability to only being identified by the owner’s phone!
The whole point is that people have been using AirTags to stalk others, so no.
The problem is that such a device could be used for stalking which is why you get notice of the AirTag moving with you currently.
Yeah: for once Some is trying to do the right thing: to balance the needs of the owner of the object the Airtag is attached to with the owner of the Airtag. It's fine when it's the same owner; it's creepy as soon as you attach it to something belonging to someone else.
Fork tube is best. People figured this all out years ago.
Will the thief still be able to get a message after one hour if the speaker is removed?
Yes
Would a pair of old AirPods do the same without notifying the thief?
Gotta charge it before every few rides but still 🤔🤔🤔
Instead of making the airtag holder hard to spot why not integrate the rear reflector into the holder? So it's a component with a clear use and just a hidden space.
Solution is to always use one for iOS and one for Android (for example the new Moto tag or similar). Chances is that the thief will remove the first one thinking he is therefore safe, without releasing there is a second tracker (people tend to have one phone with them)
Do you need a iPhone to use air tag??
no, you can use an ipad
Need for set up, after that for detection you can use an Android
@@gkeeney123 no U cant. AirTag works only with apple hardware with FindMy app. Precise location works only with iphone 11-14.
You can always turn on Lost mode, so person who will find you AirTag gets your contact (NFC phone needed).

Muc-Off actually makes a tubeless presta valve with an AirTag holder that mounts it inside your tire. I use it and nobody will ever find my AirTag
Umm so now all theirs just remove the seat right?
Remove the speaker does not stop them getting the alert message
Amazing video!
Since you 3d printer the part, you should be sharing the STL...
Stalkers watching this: "WRITE THAT DOWN!"
Great instructional video to get the speaker out, but the location of the tag seems obvious, and someone would just have to take off the seat.
You could use a carbon sest post.
What is the better life of air tag
1 year
Why does Apple just sell another version without the speak, duh?
People will find this immediately
