Your videos are so helpful. They have been invaluable to us as we work on our Airstream. What kind of sealant did you use on these rivets? Thanks in advance.
Really appreciate the time and effort you put into these. I'm at the same stage on my '74. What an adventure in learning! Be encouraged and keep the videos coming. And a big hand to your lovely wife for helping!
Just a pro-tip, if you put a little tape on the end of your rivet gun, it helps keep it from slipping off the rivets and cuts down on the “divets” or “eyebrows” that come from being slightly off center. I can’t say where I work, but I build a very specific door and use this technique daily. 40+ rivets around the door, 36+ around the window. Great job on the restore!
Thanks for the video. I did not know how buck rivets were installed. You clearly showed the technique. As an aside, it is nice to restore an Airstream. But, to dismantle the Airstream, polish the exterior, remove and then re-install some 4000 buck rivets, and reassemble the Airstream, it must be prohibitively time consuming and expensive.
Glad you enjoyed it. Lol and yes, I would not recommend someone do what I am doing. It will be epic when its done but yea, its a massive undertaking. I am not replacing all the rivets, just the ones that need to be aside from the window and door frames.
Great video! I wish I could have you come and consult us on our Imperial Mansion. We are about to start getting quotes for fabricators to do the riveting but would love to learn how to do this on site.
Fantastic content , I've learnt a lot watching this video. I like the words on your T shirt.."do the job right" 👍 Keep up the good work, that Airstream will be a keeper for life I'm sure .
I was trying to get a look at the driver (that goes into the airhammer)...the one I picked up has kind of a post in the middle which I'm afraid will put a hole in the center of the rivet
Loved the video. I am trying to figure out doing the buck rivets with the windows. Can you do it with the windows in place, or do you take them out? I followed your video on cleaning the windows. I am doing one at a time. I know it will take me forever that way. Also, did you ever figure out what to do with the window that was broken? Did you find someone that could make curved glass?
Nope on the outside. You keep the pressure down so you don't punch it in. The hammer bit has a concave dome head the fits the rivet. Like I said in the video, you have to keep it straight to not put a little mark in the metal if you are off angle.
Hello Miller garage! I am starting an airstream project just now. Where is a good place to buy all the paraphernalia you are using in this video? I am also in need of all sorts of spare parts and cleaning materials. I will put in some new lights and brackets and such but I do not now a good place to purchase these things online. I live in europe so it has to be an online store. Can you give me some advice? Cheers, Mathias
@@edstenson7764 Im sorry, I replied thinking it was a different video and I referenced my pop rivet gun. Here is the link to the buck rivet kit I got www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Airstream-Buck-Riveting-Kit-p/vts-843.htm
Thanks for the rivet video I learned alot however speeding up the video part I would leave out and do more in depth teaching. I'm only giving you my prospective not trying to be unkind.
Would it be a good idea to wear ear protect using the rivet gun? Could not understand the type of tape and sealant you used. Please don’t get into bait and click.
Eh, its not that loud in my opinion. I wear them while polishing but with riveting I keep the gun turned down to not bend the aluminum and its not loud. At 2:27 I mention I am using butyl tape and I used Tremco 635 sealant. What do you mean bait and click?
Give my lovely assistant/wife and big hand for helping while pregnant! She is a rock star!

@@kraftwithakkraft3307 glad you are enjoying them! I use Trempro 635. I get it from www.vintagetrailersupply.com
A trick : watch series at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching loads of movies lately.
@Zaid Alvaro Yup, I've been using Flixzone} for since december myself :D

I have a ‘74’ Sovereign too.

The patch for the door hinges looks like something Airstream should have done when the trailer was built. Good job.
such......enthralling content
Buck rivets are really intense! Great info to know. Good to see Lauren!
I am an aircraft mechanic and you can buck them your self. It’s easy. Plus you can feel it seat. It’s call a rivet cutter
Loved your videos@!! very helpful.. just wondering, what type of sealant is recommended?

Great video Ian! Now I understand buck riveting much better :-)
Thanks, thats the goal! Knowing is half the battle! Lol
What size Butyl tape did you use? Thanks for the video, really helpful
Thank you for the video, but you didn’t show the inside portion of the Bucky rivet. . . To show what’s proper or improper. Thanks!

What are you saying you put in between the layers? I'm hearing 'veal shame'. Thank you! :)
The first time, I heard 'kneel ahame'.
Subsequent listenings produced 'feels crama', 'fael scrame', and my favorite, 'Vail Jane'.
Ok, I would have thought that the impact hammer would go on the inside so there is no chance of marring the aluminum skin?

Excellent video! Where did you find the rivet and rivet gun supplier? What was the approximate cost? Thank you.
Thank you! I got the rivets from amazon 1/8" with 1/4" grip ($5.95 per 100) and the rivet gun from Northern Tool ($90).
Miller Garage thank you! Do you happen to have the part number/brand for the rivet gun? I tried to find one for $90 but didn’t see any. Ed

Yes, 5/32 rivets.
