Great review Brett! I actually bought one of these a couple months back to use in my F150. Overall been super happy with it! Works for my Android and my wife's iPhone - although it can be a little bit of a pain switching devices. Luckily I have not had any issues with my steering wheel controls or the voice controls working. Maybe an infotainment update from Honda in the future will fix that for you! 🙏 One quirk I've noticed in my vehicle is sometimes if I decline a call it makes all the audio coming from my device sound distorted and only seems to be fixed by unplugging the ottocast and plugging it back in. Might have to take advantage of your discount code and pick up a second one for our Subaru! 😉

Great review Brett. I had bought the ottocast for my 2020 Jeep Wrangler and luckily for me as well all the steering controls work great - previous/next track and invoking Google Assistant. Even the analog navigation knob on the center radio console works with ottocast for me.

Hey Brett, thanks for the thorough review. You covered everything in great detail . This product looks like a nice try, but the lack of steering wheel controls and Google assisttant over voice is a deal breaker. The whole point of AA is to help drivers keep their attention on the road, not touching the screen. I've been using AA for several years experiencing infuriating problems introduced by Google randomly. It has been very stable the last couple of years so to use this wireless adaptor seems like a big step backward. Again thanks for the review. I'll wait for your review of the Motorola MA1.

    • @ianwheelhouse5617
      @ianwheelhouse5617 2 года назад +1

Depending on your vehicle, the steering wheel controls and voice assistant might work just fine. It works as expected in my vehicle (2020 F150). Makes me think that maybe some manufacturer's infotainment systems don't recognize this as an AA/CarPlay connnection and therefore don't forward the controls appropriately. In that case I don't think ANY wireless adapters would work. Could be worth a try!

    • @GarNelson1

I'd like to see the Motorola MA1 review too. I did go ahead and buy one several months ago, and am very happy with it. At least with the MA1 and my 2021 Toyota, my steering wheel buttons do work wirelessly to my phone in either the Toyota built-in mode or the Android Auto mode. So long as I have the phone GPS location services enabled I don't get a connect prompt when I start my car. If the phone GPS is disabled then Android Auto puts up a prompt and won't start up.

I prefer connected to a cable because i found out that everytime going on a roadtrip and you're in a middle of nowhere (desert, forest, national parks, etc), the connection is stable compared to a wireless connection which signal gets cutoff or freeze sometimes. that's both on carplay / android auto (yes, i have both iphone13pro & samsungS22 ultra). 07:13 Apple car play does not support two way data. Why when you are using it, you can't send steering wheel inputs to phone.
This is why in the start 03:55 you connect to the wireless dongle, that then connects via USB as Apple car play to the stereos, even when you have a android phone. And that is like running iPhone.

While it does work for wireless Android Auto, it does it over Apple Carplay and I noticed it was a bit laggy. I also am disappointed that when Android Auto is mirrored over Carplay the media display and phone controls don't work in my dashboard (I'm on an Audi with MMI 3). Additionally the screen resolution seems to be scaled twice making it a bit fuzzy and not as sharp as Android Auto is natively. Ultimately I find AA wireless work better for wireless Android Auto than this device does, but this appears to work in a pinch and it does seem to add wireless Carplay for apple phones nicely.
As to fix your problem with the pop-up, delete your car's Bluetooth connection from your phone and the pop up will go away.
I still think that the Motorola device or AA wireless works better with Android for wireless over this device.

I have a Pioneer Head Unit in my car which has Apple CarPlay, but I get sick of plugging it in and waiting. Would this unit work with head units like mine?

Please update the name of this video to something like "Convert your Existing Wired Android Auto or Apple Auto System to Wireless". The existing name is misleading as-is.

YES! I had to downvote this video because of the misleading title. Nobody has time to waste watching videos that turn out to be useless and irrelevant all due to content creators who are trying to game the algorithm... or who just don't proofread their Titles carefully enough for whatever reason. See, I just wasted a bunch of my time feeling like I needed to back up the original comment because this all irritated the hell outta me.... so double time wasted FFS. Save all of your viewers this BS please and change the title. TY.

Wireless Android Auto/Carplay comes standard with my GMC Sierra and it is inconvenient. Some highways in America interferes with the connection so it always disconnect and I couldn't see the map

That sounds like a GM issue... I've never had that problem with my AAWireless device and a Mazda head unit.

So taking a quick look at their website it does say that all android auto functionality is preserved. Later saying specifically steering wheel controls and voice assistant should work. Not sure why those didn't work I'd be interested to know if they started working after an update.

I have had many updates since I received the device so it could be on the way. Looks like it might actually be a Honda thing. I try and update it there are changes.

Here is a suggestion. Plug your phone in. It charges as well, and you have full functionality and it isn't buggy and slow running thru a cheap Chinese device trying to simulate something.

have a couple questions. You list 2 different sources to by. Are both the same unit? The second listing for the MFG site talks about SIM card and it's much more expensive
compared to the one on Amazon. Which one did you test? Would you know if this unit works with WAZE ? A recent Android Auto update for my phone causes Waze to go to
a black screen on my car screen. Waze knows about it with BUG-11583: Android Auto black screen after open Waze. Can you watch any videos with this Wireless unit?
