That first Skittles one is actually a really good short film idea. I don't know how good of a job it does at selling candy, but damn, I was really wondering what was going on until right when the elevator was closing, and screaming "I'm sorry" was a good touch as well. Although the way the girl says the final line sounds more like a stereotypical "I'm possessed" voice than the "I got trapped here and am desperate to escape" sound, which the first guy nailed. The second one I imagine would be a lot scarier as a kid. And the Dirt Devil commercial, as said in the video, just nails how to make a scary add so perfectly lmao.
I’m kind of tired of “cyclical” horror stories when it’s just revealed that it’s a loop because I’ve seen it way too often, even if it is an interesting concept.
I think the thing that is missing most from this video is WHY the Dirt Devil ad worked. Its because it used tension in all the right ways. You never want your commodity to be associated with fear. For example, the Burger King ad was good but it never broke the tension of the scare. Thus leaving a fear association and wound up fear. But, a good use of a scary ad was the Dirt Devil of course. It used the scary part of the ad to help build tension BUT it actually releases it with comedy. Now the product is associated with a parody of the Exorcist (something good and funny) rather than ghost and demons (something bad and fear).
I really like the editing at 2:15. It looks really nice with the ad blurred behind Atrioc. I think the neutral colors in the ad make it work really well, because Atrioc takes prominence and the background doesn't distract from him at all
That Burger King ad should have ended with all of the clowns walking in and ordering food like normal people, and looking at the kid for being the weird one for being scared of people dressing up like clowns to get free food...
12:20 This reminded me, I wonder if Atrioc has ever seen the Long Long Man ad series. It was another set of ads that came out of Japan that I thought was phenomenal, and was what he was talking about where the product was frount and center, but the ads were also entertaining as hell.
I had to “study” that image of the two ladies snorting a dress in my highschool English class. It was made out to be a commentary on what women have to go through to be a model or something like that.
That starburst commercial is actually meant to represent what happened to Atrioc when Slime visited his dad and convinced his family he was actually Atrioc all along
The point of these ads are so that you remember the product and brand. This is exactly why companies advertise their logos on car racing competition things.
here’s a hot commercial idea: guy runs up and punches you in the nuts in real life. there’s no camera and nobody is filming it. as he walks away he yells BUY DORITOS
I'm not sure if it was exclusive to Canada, but I remember seeing an ad where a woman carrying a vat of boiling oil slips and burns her face, it was a psa for work safety.
I think the important thing to remember is that the actually good ad of these wasn't focusing on the horror of it, but the subversion of expectation. Ending the ad leaving you creeped out or afraid could be detrimental to your perspective, but leaving you laughing at the absurdity of the situation imprints much better. It is able to burrow just as far, but with a better resolution. Like Atrioc said about the Burger King ad, if the kid went in and turned on the lights and someone was just chilling out watching TV in the store and said something like, "crappy clowns out again? They aren't allowed in here for some reason" And then asked the kid if he wanted a bite while they waited out the night, it could have been a great ad. Subversion, resolution, gives time to plug the food, and it paints the restaurant as a good place to go.
14:51 on the topic of psas: theres a polish road safety ad that literally shows a dead, bloody child dead in the road on daytime tv LMAO its kinda intense
For the Burger King ad it would have been great to have the king pop out and fend off the clowns and give the dude a whopper. Then instead of dressing up as a clown they could dress up as a king. Huge miss on their part
This is the perfect Marketing Monday. You're tricking us into learning while also farming some React Andy content. You explain the significance of ads like these, and then show us funny examples. Love it, Big A, keep up the great work!
6:16 I gotta disagree in one particular case, also a burger king ad actually, where the King smashes through a window at McDonald's HQ and sprints away at top speed carrying the egg McMuffin, and then it smash cuts to basically "yeah we have breakfast sandwiches now too." I loved that ad.
"Something that shocks you or violates the social norm" that must be why in Australia I have seen KFC ads where the person yell "bucket" (buck-it) to sound like fuck it. Or BCF ads where they sing a tune which repeatedly says "f-ing" as if they mean fucking, but they mean fishing. And I do evidently remember those ads
To be honest all candy brands have to do for marketing in October is get people in the Halloween spirit so when the times rolls around they’ll remember to buy candy
I'd love atrioc's opinion on Galaxus ads. Its kinda like Switzerlands little amazon that does really well. The ads are amazing, basically they start out without branding but copying tropes really popular ads like chanel or raffaelo do and midway through the ad we get a zoom out, something went "wrong" with the ad and get price tags and little description on the furniture and stuff on screen. One of the ads even became a meme here
I think that first skittles ad is based on a creepypasta or urban legend. I distinctly remember reading a sort of ritual you could do in an elevator to get to a creepy alternative place, a bit like a modern version of saying Bloody Mary in to a mirror that youd dare people to do and scare yourselves. (If memory serves it is not immediately obvious when the doors open that youve succeeded, which adds to your ability to suspend disbelief.)
How BK did scary clown night didn't make much sense to me, they could've played it something along the lines of "don't eat at McDonald's with your kids on Halloween, they'll get scared by the clowns, come down to BK where it's bright, safe, and, this is the important part, no clowns, oh and good food (much better than McD obviously)" but instead it was 'Scary clowns are everywhere, BK is dark and desolate, all BK workers are clowns too' lol. That Skittles floor one could've been a short series or short film, also what did that have to do with Skittles? Did I miss something?
I think a clothing ad where they used gross zombies for the scare value but then the clothes made them look good “clothes so nice they look good on anyone” would be great Gets the scaryness for memory and still involves the brand in a positive way
The ENDWI program in New Mexico has a pretty cool series of 'ads' that play here to stop DWI's, idk if other states do that too but I always like watching them. I know you said PSAs are usually bad but they don't use shock value... instead they have humor mixed in them~
I think the concept for the skittles and starburst ads wasn’t to get kids to buy it or for parents to buy it for kids. To me the concept was about movie snacks that you eat when watching horror movies. If you enjoy the horror short and remember it was from skittles you might be more likely to buy skittles when watching a horror film
Loved that second ad, McDonalds really knows their target audience. But for real, how did that Burger King commercial get through? Surely someone said "hey, let's make BK a safe space to fend off all the clowns aka our competitor McDonalds" and everyone else simply looked at that person and laughed him off. Wow...
Years later… baby, hideo kojima, and Norman reedus come full swing with a full fledge game!?! That foreshadowing is something a simpsons writer could be close to writing..
Man Big A really made this 11 months early for spooktober. That’s the grindset mindset right there #gamelife
or....a month late. He got the #coolbecauselatetotheparty
Just 8 more days before we can watch it.

Let’s just say I didn’t notice that countdown
I'm so grateful for the countdown lol

Irish road safety PSAs are so dark, great video idea and not depressing at all. Just in time for Christmas
They’re so hard to watch
They are amazing for this kind of content, and if we have to watch them all the time so does he 😂
are they worse than the one with car barrel rolling through a playground with kids?
@@MindBlowerWTF way worse it’s just people who have been really badly affected by car accidents talking about it. There is no guns and roses
I love when its not Christmas time

why not both (0.0)

Nice that you enjoy my ad, bro! Thanks for the "push"!
Bro those skittles horror shorts are so on point. Legit horror not just silly monsters/imagery.
The truly scariest ad is any ad made in Canada, and that we all know
:( ...true
Lol I still remember JG Wentworth so I guess their ads do actually work

The snow road tire one is a metaphor.
The jump scare is the crash you will have without snow tires.
The camera dying halfway through the ad as it gets scarier really added to the dramatic tension, like I'm all alone now 😂
Quack or whoever is editing this thank you so much for the count down before the jump scare.

My favorite thing ever is the fact that Kevin Butler single handedly saved the ps3

An auto placed ad counted down before and completely ruined the jump scare at 12:45 FYI

That fragile childhood commercial is actually really good imo
Ngl, that skittles commerical actually got me a littel spooked.
i didnt even get to experience the jumpscare properly , when the 3 second countdown ended i got an ad for ed sheerans new album
The skittles ad was actually a sick idea for some kind of movie / short film
in terms of actual shock factor ads, the Australia TAC (road safety) ads were terrifying
The ENDWI program in New Mexico has a pretty cool series of 'ads' that play here to stop DWI's, idk if other states do that too but I always like watching them. I know you said PSAs are usually bad but they don't use shock value... instead they have humor mixed in them~

Just in time for Halloween, great timing big A
I really felt the rainbow with the skittles ad
I love critiquing the ads that show up in atriocs ad critiquing video

how have companies not figured out that people hate creepy ads lmao
Just on time for October 43rd

LMAO I was prepping myself for the jumpscare and right before it happened I got a fucking mid roll ad
That 299 add is crazy good.
The second skittles thing was kind of the same concept as the first but it was still pretty solid
